[Bug 414661] [NEW] no rhythmbox applet for text/html conversion?

2009-08-16 Thread Lewis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

I searched for RadioPardise.com, found it, but RhythmBox produced 'A text/html
decoder plugin is required to play this stream, but not installed.'
As usual for newbies in Linux, unsure on how to correct the problem. But I
really enjoy that station and would like to be able to use Ubuntu as a good
alternative to Windows.

Thanks,
Lewis

Yes it would be great to see the numbers. I predict that click-to-rename
will get voted out. A lot of the proponents for this "feature" will come
from potential (future) users of Ubuntu and even then it's not quite
clear if the majority are used to it.

I had this issue, and additionally, yelp would cause the system to run
_very_ slowly. Removing the package for xulrunner-1.9.2 eliminated the
problem. I have not tried reinstalling the package to see if installing
it again reproduces the problem.

[Bug 48671] Re: Cannot rename by clicking on a file

2009-08-16 Thread Cody Russell
"But this would be beyond the scope of papercuts, such a feature or any
other mentioned here need to be requested upstream.

*Any discussions here is not going to fix or solve this problem* , it
needs to be done upstream."

Upstream has already made it pretty clear that they're not interested in
this (not your specific idea, but the general idea of a click-to-rename
feature). I think they've had all this debate in the past, and they
made a decision. A Walton commented above, and I talked to Alex Larsson
in Gran Canaria and he was very clear about this.

Also, if Ubuntu really wants to do this it means we're committing the
desktop team to maintain another patch against Nautilus probably for the
rest of the life of Nautilus since such a patch will likely never be
accepted upstream. Maybe the desktop team should be consulted about
this.

[Bug 48671] Re: Cannot rename by clicking on a file

2009-08-16 Thread Cody Russell
"Some say, if we implement this as it is in Windows it will not work
well; others say, if we implement it a different way, new users will
have trouble with the difference. This is missing the point -- users
want click-to-rename because they find it more convenient and usable
than the dialog-driven approach, not merely because they are used to the
behavior on Windows."

What dialog-driven approach are you talking about though? Right now
Nautilus supports in-place label editing. The only thing we're talking
about is how to activate it.

And if you try to mitigate the problems in how it's done on Windows by
introducing new rules like "click in the icon one time, then click in
the label" and probably some rule about how much time is between clicks
or something.. this is potentially a lot of new information for people
to learn. Are we sure this is easier to discover and learn than a
simple right click? What's the potential for collisions between this
behavior and double-click-to-launch?

It seems like there's a lot of talk about what users want, but I hadn't
heard that we have yet done any thorough user testing on this yet. It
feels to me like we're proposing a solution to something that may not be
a problem.

[Bug 48671] Re: Cannot rename by clicking on a file

2009-08-16 Thread Cody Russell
"The proposal was to allow renaming by clicking on a file, not to copy
Windows's implementation exactly -- if the implementation is poor in
Windows, that doesn't mean it would be in Nautilus. For example, Mac OS
X allows click to rename, and I've never heard a Mac user complain that
this feature ever does anything but allow users to rename files when and
only when they intend to do so. Please do not argue against a feature by
pointing at the same feature implemented poorly somewhere else; we
should take it as an opportunity for us to do well what they do poorly,
and outperform the others in a tangible, measurable way. Throwing up our
hands and basically saying "we'll never get it right if they can't" is
quite unhelpful."

The obvious difference between Windows and Mac is that most Windows
users are very accustomed to learning right-click, while Mac users
traditionally have not used right-click since they didn't have a second
mouse button. So it feels like Mac has this feature out of necessity,
not because click-to-activate is somehow better than right-click.

I also have this issue with 64bit 9.04 (standard release jaunty, not
beta.) It happens with every DVD I burn, but the discs seem to read
fine. It happens with ISOs burned in Brasero, or Brasero-made data
projects. I haven't tested with DVD video discs. I also haven't tested
with command-line tools. I basically just ignore the error, and all
seems ok, but it's annoying, and troubling, especially for backups.

I have also attached my error log.

[Bug 414570] [NEW] all addresses do not transfer

2009-08-16 Thread FewClues
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

When using the "select contacts" frame to address a BCC field in an
email, I find that the select only moves 13 addresses into the actual
BCC field. If I click the add button a second or third time the
remainder of the addresses are placed in the field. This is deceptive
in that it appeared to work and I rely on that only to find that only
1/3 of the recipeints actually received the email.

This problem came to light while helping a friend solve his missing mail
problem. A quick check determined that everyone using evolution at one
time or another has faced this problem.

I cleared the cache, rebooted, closed everything non essential and it
still manifest the same problem.

Normally I use lists for group mailing, but on many occasions I need to
manually select a rather large distrtibution for my email. This is a
major problem for me and for several of my friends.

1. Ubuntu 9.04 (current)
2. evolution 2.26.1
3. transfer a list using "select" into the BCC field
4. only 13 of 65 transfered

[Bug 414565] [NEW] Nautilus memory leak when selecting a video file

2009-08-16 Thread Mathieu Marquer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I'm using Ubuntu Karmic up-to-date as of 16 August.

When I select any video file (~700MB) in Nautilus, the memory taken by
the Nautilus process increases undefinitely until nautilus crashes.

I've been unable to get a backtrace (gdb says "the program exited
normally" just after launching nautilus), but the valgrind report is
attached.

Please let me know if you need additional informations. This bug may be
a dupe of bugs #407809 and #412040

[Bug 414539] [NEW] Sticky Notes put onto workspace #2 appear on workspace #1 after reboot

2009-08-16 Thread Gergely Máté
Public bug reported:

I am using 3 virtual desktops, aka workspaces, each for different
purposes (ie. studying, working and free software development).

I like to use sticky notes to quickly type down temporary thoughts. I
put different notes onto different workspaces.

However, in case of a system reboot, all my sticky notes are collected
to workspace #1, no matter where they were before. Sticky Notes
previously put onto workspace #2 and #3 appear on workspace #1.

I could not find any way to move sticky notes between workspaces.

So I can't use sticky notes effectively on other than workspace #1,
which easily gets polluted with notes from other workspaces.

I think in an optimal situation it should behave like this: I can put
different sticky notes onto different workspaces, and every note stays
on the workspace I put it. I also have the ability to send sticky notes
from one workspace to another.

** Affects: gnome-applets (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 414529] [NEW] Don't offer hibernate as an option when there's no swap

2009-08-16 Thread Alan Pope
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 320208 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/320208

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-session

Scenario:-

System has no swap space at all. This could be because:-

* System admin decided that as the system has lots of memory, no swap is needed
* System admin decided that as the system is on SSD/Flash, swap would be
sub-optimal
* Swap is unavailable due to other technical reasons

User understands that hibernating saves power, so attempts to hibernate
the system. User goes to System -> Quit, and notes 'hibernate' is an
option, so chooses it.

Screen goes black (console) some time passes, and a message appears that
'unable to swap, no swap partition found' suggesting the user issues
'swapon -a'. This is not useful given the system has already initiated
the hibernate process. Further around a minute passes and more console
messages appear including 'BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 61s!
[compiz.real:3980]. System hangs with repeated similar messages.

User has to hit the power or reset button to restart the machine. Any
data they had was lost.

It's my opinion that the "Hibernate" option should _not_ appear when
there is no swap available. It leads the user into a false sense of
security that Hibernate is a possible option, when it clearly isn't.

[Bug 414512] [NEW] on system start gnome sound preferences sets applications sounds and sound themes volume to zero

2009-08-16 Thread forscher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-media

I use gnome alsa mixer and gnome media (with the new volume control applet). If
my system starts the master volume is set to zero. This is the behaviour which
I expect. Furthermore the volume of sound themes is set to zero too. So I have
to set the master and the sound theme to a new value at every system start.
That I do not expect and wish that only the master volume is set zero.
This unexpected behaviour hit other sound applications after system start too
(i.e. audacious).

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gvfs

Files won't open properly over the network: documents fail to open in
OpenOffice (it says file format error found); text files fail to open
(gedit says unexpected error: invalid argument); most archives won't
open (fileroller says Unexpected EOF in archive); files fail to copy to

  nautilus says "Invalid argument").

However, playing audio and video files seems to work, even if copying
  them still fails.

- I think this must be a bug in gvfs.

[Bug 414504] [NEW] nautilus works poorly with smb

2009-08-16 Thread LoonyPhoenix
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

Files won't open properly over the network: documents fail to open in
OpenOffice (it says file format error found); text files fail to open
(gedit says unexpected error: invalid argument); most archives won't
open (fileroller says Unexpected EOF in archive); files fail to copy to
the local system (in fact, they do copy, but on finishing the transfer
nautilus says "Invalid argument").

However, playing audio and video files seems to work, even if copying
them still fails.

It seems to me as though the system can't access the final several
kilobytes (or megabytes) of any file.

I think this must be a bug in gvfs, but I might be mistaken.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: i386

[Bug 414503] [NEW] [karmic] Empathy plugin not actually built

[Bug 261450] Re: brightness Applet very slow and processors getting bisy when try adjust LCD brightness

2009-08-16 Thread rydberg
If your graphics cards have a high number of brightness levels, chances
are the problem is related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/gnome-power-manager/+bug/289520. Although that particular bug has been
fixed, the problem is still in effect when adjusting the brightness with
the keyboard. A patch to the karmic g-p-m is attached, which might fix
the problem for you. It can be installed from the mactel repository also
(2.27.5-0ubuntu2~mactel1). Visit https://launchpad.net/~mactel-
support/+archive/ppa for details.

I have tested with eog on the HP PhotoSmart C8100 on 4x6 photo paper and
for me the printout is correct.

Please make sure to select paper size and orientation with "File"/"Page
Setup", the select "File"/"Print" and select the correct printer and
then check the tab "Image Settings". Does the image on the page appear
correctly there? Or is it wrong already there?

Independent whether it is wrong already there or not, please attach your
printer's PPD file (from /etc/cups/ppd/).

[Bug 414457] [NEW] Desktop Icons hide when set to 'False' but won't come back when set to 'True' in /apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop

Description:Ubuntu 9.04

..

When I uncheck /apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop
the desktop icons does disappear.
But when I check it it back, they do not reappear.

I must precise: It use to work before I try to change this value with
gconftool-2
But now, when I try:

:~$ gconftool-2 --set /apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop --type bool "0"
The icons disappear
:~$ gconftool-2 --get /apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop
:~$ false

then I try

:~$ gconftool-2 --set /apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop --type bool "1"
The icons DO NOT reappear !!!
:~$ gconftool-2 --get /apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop
:~$ true
even if the boolean value is set to true.

But it sounds like there is a way my destkop Icons can reappear.
When I start nautilus from she shell
but when I close this nautilus or close the shell, the Icons disappear again.

Do you have any ideas?

[Bug 259385] Re: [i845] Intrepid Compiz freezes on login for i845

2009-08-16 Thread jerrylamos
Guy,

Ubuntu developers simply blacklist compiz on 8.10 Intrepid and don't
start it on the affected processors. Same thing on 9.04 jaunty and 9.10
karmic. Compiz won't even start on the later ubuntu's for video drivers
that don't support compiz.

The CD's for various releases are easy to download if you want to try
them. Go to http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/cdimage/releases/ and take your
pick. I find the later releases have more features and run better with
some exceptions on some machines. karmic 9.10 is in process of
development so it has lots of problems still. Maybe that's why I run
it. The karmic A2 alpha 2 version of karmic isn't bad, A3 and A4 need a
bunch of workarounds to function. karmic doesn't release until October
so most bugs should be out by then.

By the way, compiz is "eye candy" and has nothing to do with internet,
word processors, spreadhseets, digital pictures, email, ... compiz adds
some inline graphics effects so it does slow down performance a bit.

What I did when booting CD on the levels that had trouble with compiz
was boot in recovery mode, i.e. at grub boot menu, do F6 then replace
"quiet splash" with "single" which boots in recovery mode. Then on the
recovery mode menu root prompt selection (might have to down arrow for
that selection) do apt-get remove compiz compiz-core. Then exit and
resume.

On /etc/X11/xorg.conf, what the developers decided was the "default" was good
for them so they decided not to put in an /etc/X11/xorg.conf for the rest of us
who are having problems. I copy one in from another ubuntu. If you want to
experiment, you could from the CD recovery mode root prompt:
nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Driver "vesa"
EndSection
Ctrl-o
Ctrl-o
Ctrl-x
exit
resume boot

vesa is a default basic driver which on my pc's runs on i845, ati radeon
mobility 7500, ati radeon Xpress 200, but not on intel i830.

stopped the constant opening of nautilus instances and the segfaults
have become less frequent in the logs. But i cannot use the desktop at
all the normal way, i had to sudo nautilus via gnome-do.

2009-08-16 Thread Sense Hofstede
Are you using, or have you used, Ninja, or any other programming
limiting or guarding the use of root privileges? Sometimes they might
interfere, even when you do have the right permissions.
