[Bug 11334] Re: MASTER Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste
Well said Patrick. So now it comes down to this: Fix it. We as end users expect this to be working the way windows and OS X have implemented it. If it's not gonna be fixed to that specification, then I won't even think of using it. There's a reason why software companies can sell software and have the public buy it. Because if it is not usable to the end user, the end user isn't gonna use it. And that company will then go out of business. What incentive here does linux have? As for just explaining it to the end user such as me why it doesn't work isn't a fix. If you have to explain how to do something, it's not designed correctly. If you wonder why OS X is the way it is, it is because they look at how you do something in it and they question it, how can we make this easier? This is the way Linux should be headed. Knowing there is a work around is not fixing it, it is avoiding it. -- MASTER Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/11334 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a subscriber of a duplicate bug. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 422981] [NEW] jaunty 9.04 sounds on system events not working
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-control-center I have two different systems a 32-bit and a 64-bit Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope. Version of gnome-control-center is "2.26.0-0ubuntu3". Under both systems the following problem occurs: The following sounds do not play, even if you customize them: -Window maximized -Window unmaximized -Window minimized -New e-mail -Empty Trash -Long action -Battery warning It is possible to hear the sound preview, hence the audio configuration should not be the issue. On the same systems all other types of audio output (videos, wavs, mp3s, etc) work just fine. Other sound events for example those generated by Pidgin also work fine. It appears that the sound is not triggered when the system event actually occurs. The only sounds which are correctly executed are the login sound (drums and music) and the "button click sounds" (which can be selected/deselected in the Gnome Control Center. This is just a small nuisance for common users, however for people with visual impairment, who count on the audio feedback to know what the computer is doing, may be a severe issue. This should not be overlooked. Expected behaviour: "Certain system events initiate sounds, which can be customized" Verified behaviour: "Some sounds (see above) are not initiated when the designated system event occur, independently of customization" ** Affects: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- jaunty 9.04 sounds on system events not working https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/422981 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 422883] [NEW] Karmic: Gnome-panel repeatedly crashes with panel clock enabled
Public bug reported: Karmic 9.04 64-bit gnome-applets 2.27.91-0ubuntu1 gnome-panel 1:2.27.4-0ubuntu1 gnome-panel-data 1:2.27.91-0ubuntu2 gnome-utils 2.27.91-0ubuntu1 gnome-system-tools 2.27.3-0ubuntu1 During today's karmic updates, upon reboot the gnome-panel continuously and repeatedly crashed, as when one issues a "killall gnome-panel" command. I was only able to stop the crashes by issuing the "killall gnome-panel" multiple times. The crashes stopped but of course I had no more panels. The error causing the continuous recycling of the gnome-panel was the system not finding the proper files to run the panel clock. Here are some of the pertinent error messages: Unable to open desktop file /usr/share/applications/bum.desktop for panel launcher: No such file or directory (gnome-panel:5407): libglade-WARNING **: could not find glade file '/usr/share/gnome-panel/glade/clock.glade' ** ERROR **: /usr/share/gnome-panel/glade/clock.glade not found; this installation is incorrect. aborting... Trace/breakpoint trap (core dumped) In any case, I removed the clock applet from the panel and the system booted normally. SOLUTION: Should anyone else experience this problem: Stop the crashes with "killall gnome-terminal" if you can open a terminal. Since you can't get to the panel to remove the clock, try to open a terminal, then gconf-editor. Go to /apps/panel/applets and find the applet for the clock. Go to the right panel of the applet, find the bonobo_iid entry ((OAFIID:GNOME_ClockApplet), right click and select "Unset key". That will stop the panel cycling. Once I rebooted, I tried adding the clock back and immediately the panel started continuously cycling once again. Selecting "Unset key" for that newly created applet entry immediately fixed the problem. ** Affects: gnome-panel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Karmic: Gnome-panel repeatedly crashes with panel clock enabled https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/422883 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-panel in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 11334] Re: MASTER Copy-Paste doesn't work if the source is closed before the paste
Olaf wrote 21 hours ago: "Though - come on - it shouldn't take too many losses to remember this behaviour." How does a normal user know why the contents of his clipboard are lost? How does this user know he has to keep the source open? We know why this happens, but people on Launchpad aren't the average user. My dad had forgotten his password for some website, so he clicked the "I forgot my password" link retrieve a new password. He opened Evolution, copied the password, closed Evolution and tried to paste his password in Firefox. Ofcourse this didn't work, so he though he didn't click on "Copy". He opened Evoltion for a second time, made sure he copied the new password and closed Evolution to paste the password in Firefox. After several tries he gave up. He really didn't know what was going on and he was almost going nuts. He's an average user. How will he ever know he has to keep the source open? I use Google to get to know what's going on, but the average user doesn't do this. The average user just gives up and takes the telephone to call the person who installed Ubuntu and tells him he want Windows back, because Ubuntu doesn't work. My dad doesn't search on Google. What should he enter in Googles search bar? He doesn't know what a clipboard is, he only knows: Right click and select "Copy" to copy and select "Paste" to paste. If this doesn't work, then he gives up. He doesn't know which words to enter to find a website which explains how copy/paste works in Linux and if he does find this website, he doesn't understand it, because he doesn't know English. Olaf wrote 21 hours ago: "I'm not saying it's good the way it is - but it's not the worst problem ever. And there's plenty of things with higher prority. On my personal list - remembering size and position of closed apps - so they open in the same position with the same size next time I open them - instead of "smart" placement that gnome devs prefered - would be a way higher priority in my book." I don't know a single bug that should have a higher priority. The bug you're speaking of is, in my opinion, absolutely not a bug of high priority. The copy/paste bug causes many users to loose their work, every day. The size/position bug doesn't cause people to loose their work. Everything just works: The windows just open. The only thing you have to do, is drag and drop the window to the location to want it to be and make the window bigger or smaller. That only takes a second or maybe a few seconds, but that's all. In my opinion a low priority. The copy/paste bug causes people to loose their work. Every day people loose work, only because of this bug. A bug which causes so many people to loose their work just has to be a bug of the highest priority. Olaf wrote 21 hours ago: "Google is collecting ideas every year for GSoC projects. Write a proposal and submit it. Fair chance a student will be paid by google fixing this." Ok, were can I do this? I can't find a page to submit ideas. pyrates wrote 16 hours ago: "Just an idea here, what do the rest of you think?" Perfect. pyrates wrote 16 hours ago: "Oh yeah and I almost forgot, remove the selection copy method." True, copy/paste with the scroll wheel just doesn't work. In the past, when there was just a normal button in the middle, it worked, but nowadays mice have scroll wheels, which are too sensitive. I select some text in Firefox, try to paste it somewhere else, but everytime I press the scroll wheel to paste I scroll down a bit, so the text is pasted at the wrong place. Saïvann Carignan wrote 16 hours ago: "This is a bug report, ideas are counterproductive here." His replies describe how the bug can be fixed. His replies are usefull, which I can't say of your replies. Actually it doesn't even matter what replies are posted. None of them help fixing this bug, none of them is productive, because developers just don't care. I've got the feeling I'm only talking to non- programmers who are affected by this bug. Once in a while when many replies are posted some moderator comes along, only to tell the replies are counterproductive and that's all. Where are the programmers? Where are the people who are able to fix bugs? Saïvann Carignan wrote 16 hours ago: "As repeated before, there is already a specification for clipboard which is good for old and new clipboard methods, the bug is simply that most software does not implement it correctly so re-inventing another specification is probably not likely to bring a solution to the problem." You really don't understand it. Read the replies. The bug isn't simply that most software doen't implement it correctly. The bug is simply that the clipboard is integrated at the wrong place. Could this patch please be applied to the downstream nautilus? I don't know of any other way to get it applied upstream. [Bug 391976] Re: Ekiga freeze after I press hang up button
I've not been able to make a successful call yet. When I launch Ekiga, I can make a call to the echo test, I can hear the incoming voice, but I can't record my own. I then hang up and Ekiga hangs. However, I see that if I try recording something with Sound Recorder I get a similar situation (it hangs when I stop recording - also I notice that it's not registering any input). [Bug 422808] [NEW] mouse pad pointer jumps to side when I initiate movement
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: yelp I assume this is ubuntu 8.10 because it says URI "ghelp:about-eeebuntu" is invalid. The mouse pad worked with xandros; so the hardware should be ok. Whenever I initiate a cursor movement by putting my finger onto the mousepad, the arrow jumps to the side. I can alleviate a lot of this jumping by tapping the mouse pad first, and then sliding my finger. I did not expect a jump away from the current location when I initiated movement. This is a Asus Eee PC 701SD. If I slide my finger from left to right across the pad; lift my finger and put it back to the left side again, the arrow will instantly move to where I initiated the last movement. It seems to be remembering where it started, not where it ended. On exiting K3B, expected to see CD icon on desktop with CD name. Expected to see contents of CD when CD opened in nautilus. Actual behaviour: I insert a CD, nautilus correctly show a 'blank CD' icon on the desktop. I know write data to the CD using K3B, the CD reports that it has written successfully. I close K3B. On the desktop, the 'blank CD' icon is still visible, if I double-click the icon, a nautilus window opens giving the option of writing to the CD but does not show any of the files that have just been written to the CD. [Bug 275340] Re: Remote Desktop - "only accept from localhost" option does not work
I tested this, and it seems to work as expected. Do not be frightened that your desktop sharing is still being advertised on your network and is picked up by vinaigre (vnc client). I believe this is avahi advertising the service. [Bug 275340] Re: Remote Desktop - "only accept from localhost" option does not work
I had a short jabber talk with Jonh Wendell. It seems the option to select interface is available in the back end but not directly in vino- preferences. To set up localhost only, you have to open up gconf-editor and modify the following string value to be "lo" (without the quotes): /desktop/gnome/remote_access/network_interface @ anatoly techtonik (and anyone willing to test) - Can you test this out and make sure it works for you?
