[Bug 446062] [NEW] evince doesn't render PDF's - not MIME issue

2009-10-07 Thread Graham F
Public bug reported:

This is NOT a duplicate of 445689 and doesn't appear to be a mime issue.

2009-10-07 Thread Graham F
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 444962 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/444962

Nope it does change anything! evince comes up as a completely blank
window -even without a toolbar. This isn't a mime type issue -
something more fundamental has broken. xpdf renders the pdf's just fine.

This is NOT a duplicate of /444962 as the mime types issue is fixed on
my machine. (it was broken too - but its fixed now)

[Bug 446058] [NEW] Incorrect rendering of PDF/A mode documents

2009-10-07 Thread David Wrigley
Public bug reported:

I have a collection of documents scanned using nuance paperport/omnipage
windows software. Using evince as my document viewer in both hardy and
jaunty every document splits into two layers- a faint background layer
containing the whole document hidden by a foreground layer containing
very enlarged text from part of the document. Tweaking the viewing
options does not make any difference.

The documents open perfectly in acroread for linux but each one does
give me a warning message that the document is in PDF/A mode, If I click
the warning icon it says

[Bug 445243] Re: gnome-display-properties cannot set virtual resolution

2009-10-07 Thread Claus Frein
Same for me. I believe the problem lies in the wrong calculation of the
virtual desktop-size.

 I got two 1280x1024-Monitors, and in xorg.conf the follwoing parameter is set:
"Virtual2048 2048"

It should be:
"Virtual 2560 2048"

If i change it manually, it works immediately.

@Koterpillar: Your x-size seems to be to small. Try to set it at least
to "Virtual 2304 1624" (or greater) and try it again.

[Bug 411138] [NEW] Missing default browser setting will crash many apps

2009-10-07 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I'm using Karmic Koala Alpha 3. I just installed Firefox 3.5 so I now
have both Firefox versions, 3.0.12 and 3.5.2. I want to set the new
version to be the default browser, so I go to
System->Preferences->Preferred Applications, select Custom (as there's
no Firefox 3.5 in the list) and enter "firefox %s" in the command field.
Then I press the "Close" button. I now assume that my default browser is
Firefox 3.5

But using few applications leads to unexpected errors and crashes:

1. Using Ubuntu One is not possible, as it crashes on connect. The first time
execution requires default browser to go online to login/register for the
service.
2. Using apport is not possible. Apport catches problematic application crash,
collects the report, uploads it to the network but it can't complete the report
as it needs the default browser to be set.
3. Almost any application crashes if it has clickable links. The crash happens
on the click on the link (probably this requires the default browser to be set
as well). Gwibber is one app that suffers tremendously from this.

Indeed, the check in System->Preferences->Preferred Applications shows
that nothing it saved in the "command" field, as if default browser was
set to nothing.

So here we have 2 problems:

1. Custom command doesn't get saved in Preferred Applications control panel.
2. Due to 1), various applications will unexpectedly crash when no default
browser is defined.

In the Gnome main menu,Places|Search for files leads to gnome-

In the Nautilus menu, Go|Seach for files leads to the new Nautilus-

I consider this inconsistent and irritating.

Proposal:

- Gnome main menu, Places|Search should either start tracker-search-tool
or open a new Nautilus window with Tracker search activated.

- Application|System Tools|Traditional File Search or
  Application|Other|Traditional File Search
  should start gnome-search-tool.

I'm still dead in the water, but I did get a LiveUSB of Jaunty going so
I was able to check out /var/log/dist-upgrade. It was empty.

I did the upgrade from the Update Manager. Now I am downloading the ISO
and plan on making another LiveUSB with it and seeing how I get on.

Can you think of any other files/info that might be useful to you before
I blow it all away and start again?

I set activation time for the screen saver to 1 minute and start play any game
goes to full screen. Exact after 1 minute screen goes out of full screen to
window mode I can't click with mouse in it or use Alt+F4 ALT+Tab etc. So i
found as temporay solotion to deactivate screen saver at all. So the problem is
that the screen saver thinks that the computer is idle, when running in full

[Bug 445953] [NEW] shutdown asks for password with only 1 user logged in

2009-10-07 Thread Chris Weiss
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

from reading similar but not directly related bug reports, I don't know
if this gdm or fast-user-switch, so since i'm not actually switching
users I'm going with gdm.

system upgraded from jaunty to karmic
power prefs set to ask on power button press
login 1 user
press power button, click shutdown or wait for the timeout
I get a prompt saying other users are logged in and need a password to shutdown.
with this prompt active, I ctrl-alt-f1 and login and run "sudo who". this
lists my account on tty1 and tt7, as it should, there are no other users logged
in. this was not a problem on jaunty and as I understand it, I should not get
this prompt.

[Bug 445082] Re: Preview don't work in Nautilus 2.28 - Ubuntu Karmic Beta

2009-10-07 Thread NAQuan
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 444962 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/444962

I've found the problem, post it in case someone will need:

The sound don't play because nautilus application sound volume in Sound
Preference>Applications is zero, I don't know the reason why but it's a trick
to bring it up again:
- Right click on the sound volume applet and choose Sound Preference, choose
the Applications tab
- Bring the nautilus out in background with some sound file visible, mouse
hover on that file
- Now you should see the Nautilus application entry in Application tab, use TAB
key to focus on that entry, now you can use the arrows key to increase the
volume again

Hope that help.

[Bug 438136] Re: palimpsest bad sectors false positive

2009-10-07 Thread Tim
palimpsest seems to check the raw value against the threshold for
reallocated sectors.

All other smart utilities seem to check the normalised value against the
threshold. This seems to be more logical, however the developer of palimpsest
seems to think the first behavior is correct as noted by him in this bug report

[Bug 428115] Re: Does not lock screen on lid close

2009-10-07 Thread Rocko
I have the same settings as the default karmic, ie as outlined in
comment #43, but I still don't get prompted for a password when I
resume. I'm running gnome-power-manager 2.28.0-0ubuntu3.

The only unusual thing I had to do when testing is that I had to
manually suspend using "sudo /etc/acpi/sleep.sh sleep" because the
suspend option has disappeared in the latest karmic.

Here's my relevant configuration details - is there something else that
needs changing as well?

gconftool -R /apps/gnome-power-manager/lock
 hibernate = true
 suspend = true
 gnome_keyring_hibernate = true
 blank_screen = false
 use_screensaver_settings = false
 gnome_keyring_suspend = false

gconftool -R /apps/gnome-screensaver
 lock_enabled = false
 idle_activation_enabled = true
 cycle_delay = 10
 status_message_enabled = true
 mode = blank-only
 theme = screensavers-ubuntu_theme
 user_switch_enabled = true
 idle_delay = 10
 logout_delay = 120
 power_management_delay = 30
 embedded_keyboard_enabled = false
 logout_enabled = false
 embedded_keyboard_command =
 lock_dialog_theme = default
 logout_command =
 themes = []
 lock_delay = 0

[Bug 445915] [NEW] Can't open PDF

2009-10-07 Thread Benjamin Prosnitz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

I upgraded to Karmic from Jaunty. When I try to open a PDF, I get the
error "Unable to Open Document", "File type unknown (application/octet-

Reinstalling evince did not help. The documents (this bug is for all
PDFs) open fine with Acrobat 9 and opened in Jaunty.

that bug.

[Bug 437429] Re: Cannot prevent login sound

2009-10-07 Thread David Bensimon
I agree with Brian. Even more, users must have the ability to login
silently *and/or* to customize the sound. This is available in the
"Login Window" utility in jaunty but is a feature that has been removed
in karmic. Requesting that we give back the power of sound customization
to the user, both for system sounds (this bug) and session sounds ( Bug
#324700 ).

[Bug 157478] [NEW] Brasero reports incorrect medium size & status

2009-10-07 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Steps to reproduce:
1) Insert a normal fresh CD-R into the drive.
2) Right click on an .iso file and "Open with Brasero."

Actual results:
Brasero opens and displays incorrect medium information and will not burn
anything, claiming that the medium is not writable.
Also, the .iso file is not selected (already a bug #153523)

Expected Results:
Basero shows correct medium size and allows writing to disc.

Note:
Immediately after this, I tried right-click "Open with CD/DVD creator" and that
worked fine, so it was definitely not a faulty CD-R blank.

Below is a copy of what is shown in the Brasero window:
Drive: ASUS SCB-2408

Type: CD-R
Size: 17179869184.0GB of Data
Contents:
Status: the medium is not writable

[Bug 72843] [NEW] No notification about failed mount of usb drive

2009-10-07 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Attaching an USB drive to my laptop normally brings up an icon on the
desktop which allows me to access that drive. In case of an error while
mounting the drive, nothing happens at all - not even a notification of
the failure or why it failed. The system log shows following messages:

Nov 19 01:38:21 localhost kernel: [17288890.176000] usb 5-8: new high speed USB
device using ehci_hcd and address 6
Nov 19 01:38:21 localhost kernel: [17288890.312000] usb 5-8: configuration #1
chosen from 1 choice
Nov 19 01:38:21 localhost kernel: [17288890.312000] scsi3 : SCSI emulation for
USB Mass Storage devices
Nov 19 01:38:32 localhost kernel: [17288901.036000] usb 5-8: USB disconnect,
address 6
Nov 19 01:38:32 localhost kernel: [17288901.036000]  3:0:0:0: scsi: Device
offlined - not ready after error recovery

It would be good practice to inform the user about the failure - in this
case a NTFS file system which was not cleanly shut down.
