[Bug 118800] Re: Passwords should not be required when creating accounts

2009-10-23 Thread Gerard Dethier
I agree with Everett and Ricardo. I recently posted a bug
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/telepathy-
butterfly/+bug/457942) which also rises an important security issue
related to the usage of Empathy. Setting Empathy as default IM client
for Karmic seems to me to be a bad idea. If it is still the case, these
security problems should clearly be exposed so users can switch to
pidgin if they want.

[Bug 436731] Re: Googel calendar support broken; repeatedly asks for password

2009-10-23 Thread Ryan Steele
I can confirm. I tried deleting my Google calendars and re-adding them.
When adding a calendar, Evolution prompts for a password to retrieve the
list of calendars associated with the Google account. This part still
works. However, once the calendar is selected, the repeated prompts for
the password begin.

Workaround: Use CalDAV, as documented here:
http://www.google.com/support/calendar/bin/answer.py?hl=enanswer=99358.
Google doesn't have instructions specifically for Evolution but the
instructions for Sunbird/iCal are fairly easily adapted for Evolution.

According to https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=583374 it is
intended that CalDAV replace the Google Calendar import. In fact,
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=588856 indicates that code
was committed in 2.27.5 to migrate Google Calendar accounts to CalDAV.
So I guess the question is, why is this not working?

[Bug 60448] [NEW] .xsession_errors file grows out of control saturates disk space

2009-10-23 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Hi,

I'm running Kubuntu Dapper, freshly dist-upgraded, on a Compaq Presario
V2610CA laptop, with no particular esoteric configuration.

In the past 2 weeks, my disk space has been saturated **TWICE**, i.e. up
to 100% occ. on a 60 GB disk with 40 GB previously free, as reported by
the df -h command (in fact app. 10 MB was still available, just enough
to be able to boot/login!). The cause of these events is what seems an
ever-growing .xsession-errors file in one user directory. i.e.
/home/user. After a quick search on Google, I've found 2 similar
reports (one concerning Dapper, the other OpenSuse):

http://www.nabble.com/X-error-log-t1364627.html

http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2005-10/msg00044.html

However, I didn't find anything related to this problem on Launchpad...

It 's quite possible that something is going wrong with my system and is
filling the .xsession-errors file with various reports. I did not have
the chance to pinpoint what's going wrong since my only concern was to
prevent my system from completely crashing. That's why I deleted the
file without trying to look at its content (my system was saturated to a
point that I could not receive one simple e-mail, Kmail complaining
about the lack of disk space...). The only thing I know is that since 2
weeks, I use more frequently Skype and I have created a second user
account for my wife to be able to manger her e-mails with Kmail and
browse the Web with Konqueror a little bit. Nothing so complex or
heavy...

Anyway, this report is not about what's going wrong with my system, but
instead about the fact that an error-log file, like .xsession-errors,
that is supposed to be useful to track problems, should not be the cause
of a major critical problem like the lack of disk space! I don't know
what would be a satifying solution, but in my case I've set up a script
to erase this file in root and all users directory at each hour, by
putting an executable file with this content in /etc/cron.hourly:

rm /home/*/.xsession-errors*
rm /root/.xsession-errors*

Thanks for your attention.

[Bug 441825] Re: Acer Aspire One: OSD for brightness keys not working properly

2009-10-23 Thread Martin Pitt
Right, that shows it: It first tries the XBACKLIGHT extension:

TI:17:40:53 TH:0x840f168FI:gpm-brightness-xrandr.c
FN:gpm_brightness_xrandr_setup_display,170
 - No outputs have backlight property
TI:17:40:53 TH:0x840f168FI:gpm-brightness-xrandr.c
FN:gpm_brightness_xrandr_init,718
 - no XRANDR extension, so aborting init

but apparently your video driver doesn't support that. What video card
do you have?

g-p-m falls back to hal when xrandr doesn't work, but hal does not see
any panel either:

TI:17:40:53 TH:0x840f168FI:gpm-brightness-hal.c
FN:gpm_brightness_hal_init,462
 - No devices of capability laptop_panel

So apparently your brightness keys are hardwired, so that they work
without the operating system's support. But without detecting the
backlight device, g-p-m is unable to determine the current brightness
level and give a notification for it.

[Bug 458859] [NEW] Totem DVB playback not working in Karmic

2009-10-23 Thread Matthias Rosenkranz
Public bug reported:

After an upgrade from Jaunty to Karmic RC selecting DVB in totem brings
up the channel list but does not playback any channel. The status bar
says Playing but here is no video or audio and the counter in the
status bar does not advance. Totem stays responsive and does not crash
though. This is a regression from Jaunty where the same setup used to
work. DVB playback works in Me TV.

[Bug 458693] Re: some app icons are lost from menu

2009-10-23 Thread Harald Sitter
m...@osiris:~$ dpkg -S kmail.png

m...@osiris:~$ dpkg -S konqueror.png
konqueror: /usr/share/icons/hicolor/32x32/apps/konqueror.png

As we can see the icons are shipped along side the apps, so the missing
icons in the menu are most likely not problems with the packages
themselfs.

Bouncing bug back to gnome-panel, since I could only do wild guessing on
what is causing the issue in particular (pixmap cache? icon theme not
falling back to hicolor?)

[Bug 456093] Re: Duplicated entries of Okular in Open With - Other Application

2009-10-23 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Yes thanks, NoDisplay is a menu thing though, it's not because you don't
want a menu item for a software that you should not be able to use it to
open files eithere. GNOME use NoDisplay=true for its default pdf viewer
for example because it's a viewer that should be used when double
clicking on files and there is little interest running it otherwise, you
still want to be able to use it though

[Bug 445123] Re: There's no simple way to disable the gdm face browser

2009-10-23 Thread Joel Ebel
Sebastien,

I'm sorry my request bothered you and felt it wasted your time. My
intent was the opposite. I looked through the list of open GDM bugs and
did not see any that I felt accurately represented the issues I
described. I was considering opening new bugs for them, but since you
stated that bugs already existed, I was hoping you could tell me which
ones you felt were the same, rather than having me open bugs which you
subsequently mark as duplicates. The latter seemed like more of a waste
of time to me. If you are still unwilling to let me know what you think
is a dupe, I will look through the list once more, then file the bugs,
and wind up discovering which you think are the same when you close them
as dupes.

[Bug 458878] [NEW] Logout/Shutdown buttons should reside in System menu as well

2009-10-23 Thread Dan Dart
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I think it is non-intuitive to have logout/shutdown buttons under the

They should also be put back under the System menu (so people have a
choice and people can find them).

[Bug 222256] Re: small fonts in epiphany

2009-10-23 Thread Matijs van Zuijlen
Adjusting the minimal font size does help in making text readable, but
the result is that, e.g., headings that would have a smaller size than
the minimal font size will have the same size as the text. That's not
what I want in a graphical browser.

[Bug 77010] Re: Overuse of system beep without volume control

2009-10-23 Thread Martin Pitt
Opening Linux task:

TheMuso the config item for the kernel CONFIG_SND_HDA_INPUT_BEEP somehow got
enabled again.
seb128 pitti, I've a pc beep entry in alsamixer there
TheMuso jaunty's kernels have the hda beep disabled, and somehow it got
re-enabled for karmic
TheMuso So to really really put a clamp on this, we turn it off, once again,
in the kernel.
TheMuso it was accidentally reverted back in July, but since it didn't bother
anyone, we didn't think to check it, but now its causing problems again, we can
fix it.
TheMuso It was reverted due to some x86/lpia config consolidation.

So it seems to really fix this it needs to be disabled again in the
kernel. However, that's a little too late for karmic final, so I propose
to take the safe option and just disable the gconf key for keyboard bell
by default. That won't help beeps for batteries, or beeps in VTs, but at
least fix 80% of the trouble.

[Bug 77010] Re: Overuse of system beep without volume control

2009-10-23 Thread David Kågedal
My problem seems pulseaudio-related. Unfortunately, every time I try to
go to the pulseaudio package in lauchpad, all I get is an error page
saying that launchpad is having problems.

Today I first resumed the laptop on the train and it worked fine with
the themed beep using the module-x11-bell configuration in PA that was
active before suspend.

But when I got to work and resumed again (now connected to an external
keyboard and screen) something went wrong in PA again. It started
beeplooping the sample, and when I triggered a new beep I got the
dreaded system beep. And I see this in syslog:

Oct 23 10:48:15 krank pulseaudio[2700]: ratelimit.c: 89 events suppressed
Oct 23 10:48:20 krank pulseaudio[2700]: ratelimit.c: 245 events suppressed

Oct 23 10:48:38 krank pulseaudio[2700]: ratelimit.c: 159 events suppressed

I would report this on pulseaudio if Launchpad let me...

[Bug 433500] Re: gvfsd memory leak

2009-10-23 Thread Christian Berg
The same issue happend to my PC tonight.

I usalay leave my PC on overnight. This night i started an distcc daemon and
compiled an kernel on my netbook with distcc.
This morning my PC was very unresponsive and slow, also some panel applets
crashed (cpufreq, and audio mixer)
i started the gnome-system-monitor. CPU utilization was pretty normal, but
gvfsd eats 3gib from my 4 Gig RAM

I don't have any Networkshares currently, so i didn't copied anything over
gvfs.
Auto-Suspend ist off, but DPMS is activated after 5min, and power-management
for Harddisks is active.

i leaved the faulty daemon open and reported this issue via ubuntu-bug,
i hope this brings you a helpful backtrace. IMHO it's a plain Memoryleak

2009-10-23 Thread Roel
i have the same issue as yaztromo mentions here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/+bug/185729/comments/53

basically when copying a folder to a cifs-mount, the folder is created but the
files fails to copy.
It looks to me like the folder is being created and it tries to copy the files
before the correct rights can be given to the new folder.

when using nautilus it only happens to the first file (notice creates enough
time to set correct rights?)
when using bash (cp -R folder/ cifsmount/) it happens to all files (notice
creates enough time to set correct rights?)

uname -a

Err, no, that's a driver (linux bug) issue with resume, apparently.

I'm not sure why my patch doesn't fix the issue with gnome-power-manager
but it seems to work with KDE powerdevil (once a patch to respect the
brightness_in_hardware property has been uploaded).

The MSI Wind seems to send brightness up/down key events on every
brightness change and that's exactly what brightness_in_hardware=true
indicates.

[Bug 428884] Re: gnome-screensaver --poke functionality does no longer inhibit screen blanking

While this is annoying, it it does not break karmic enough to be a
release blocker. There is no fix available either. But this is SRUable,
so moving milestone.

[Bug 419143] Re: Printing from evince (and perhaps other GTK apps) to PostScript printers is broken

2009-10-23 Thread Till Kamppeter
I have checked the output and both the PostScript directly generated by
evince and the PostScript which is generated when converting evince's
PDF to PostScript generates the offending embedded font code. This means
that this bug is not covered by switching evince from outputting PDF to
outputting PostScript.

Wwe need a real fix of GTK's or Cairo's PDF AND PostScript output.

A good workaround would be to make evince simply passing through the
input files to the print queue if they are PDF or PostScript.

Re: [Bug 349312] Re: Evolution 2.26 does not support import of outlook .pst

2009-10-23 Thread Holmesy
My mistake.

I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 -Jaunty Jackalope.
I'll live with what I've got, and wait for future developments, but one
things for certain, I'm not going back to Microsoft.

Cheers Holmesy.

 OK, no problems.

Now, back to your issue: you may not have done anything wrong, it may be
as simple as you are not on the required Ubuntu version...

Are you running Ubuntu Karmic? If you are not, it will not work. The
 necessary requirements are:

 - Ubuntu Karmic (a.k.a. Ubuntu 9.10, currently on Beta going to RC)
  - LIBPST 0.6.41
  - Evolution 2.28.* (all evolution and evolution-data-server packages, except
 the -dev ones)
(see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingEvolution, headers (1) and (2) for a
 list)

You can check your Evolution version level by clicking on Help/About.

Both Evo 2.28.* and Libpst 0.6.41 are *only* available for Karmic, and
will not be backported to Jaunty or earlier. The code changes are
significant, and I personaly do not think there is enough cause for a
 backport.

On the other hand, if you are running Jaunty, you can convert PST files
by running 'readpst' from a terminal. You will have to install the
'libpst' and the 'readpst' packages to do that.

On the, er, other other hand, you *may* be able to use 'readpst' from a
previous-to-Jaunty Ubuntu release, but these versions of 'readpst' do
are unable to deal with PST files from Outlook 2003 onwards.

 Cheers
