[Bug 491771] [NEW] [Karmic] battery is charged (when discharging) and unaccurate remaining battery time

2009-12-03 Thread Jordi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

When I switch on my computer using only the battery, the Battery monitor
on the tray is showing ALWAYS that the battery is fully charged.
However, making a simple click onto the monitor icon, it shows a popup
with the actual percentage of remaining battery. In this situation, if I
do not verify every while and while the remaining power, the computer
just runs out of battery and switch off abruptly. When restarting, I had
to fscheck the filesystems.

However, I found a trick. All this changes when I simply connect the PC
to the power (just less than a second) and the monitor changes:

* A popup shows that the the battery is discharging, as well as the remaining
battery percentage and the time.
* The tray icon is showing that the battery is discharging.
* The popup information when click the icon remains the same.

In this situation, the battery monitor shows 2 alerts: the first one
some time before running out of battery (about 9% of battery) and the
second one when only 1-2% of battery remains. In both cases, the popup
alert shows correctly the percentage of battery, but do not show the
proper remaining time (just unknown remaining time or so). In
contrast, in this case, the computer switch off normally (as I have set
up in the settings).

All these problems appeared when upgrading to Karmic. In the previous
ubuntu release, all worked really fine.

My hardware settings are as follows (sudo lshw):

[Bug 44082] Re: GNOME Panel icons (on right side) move apparently randomly on session start in some situations

2009-12-03 Thread Ahmad Amr
This is a very stupid bug the highly affects the user experience,
especially those moving from Windows to Linux. If - for any reason - a
developer thinks this bug - that has been here for more than 3 years -
is minor or not worth investigation, then he/she is stupid as well, else
if he/she can't solve it, I guess someone has to help that developer or
it has to be solved by another one.

[Bug 491778] [NEW] gnome-display-properties fails to add new monitor

2009-12-03 Thread Ketil Malde
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I'm struggling to configure a HP dm1 with an Intel GMA4500 chipset.
When I attached my external monitor to the VGA port, gnome-display-
properties would correctly identify it and display it, but enabling it
didn't seem to have any effect (although no error or other feedback was
produced). Each attempt added the following dmesg messages:

[17228.008395] i2c-adapter i2c-2: unable to read EDID block.
  [17228.008399] i915 :00:02.0: HDMI Type A-1: no EDID data

I therefore thought it might be related to
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=493977
or to Bug #447803. However, trying xrandr:

% xrandr --output LVDS1 --auto --rotate normal --pos 0x0
--output VGA1 --auto --rotate normal --right-of LVDS1

correctly set up the monitor as expected, so I file this against gnome-
display-properties (package: gnome-control-center), which as a minimum
could provide more information when it fails to set up monitors :-)

[Bug 490694] Re: shares-admin crashes on start when udev has been restarted without reboot

2009-12-03 Thread jkroll
Hi,

I agree that udev should be fixed in the first place, it has no reason
to touch the sleeping drive.

Your patch fixes the crash for me:

$ $LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib/:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH shares-admin

(shares-admin:16955): Liboobs-WARNING **: Could not find any network
device on the system: The name org.freedesktop.Hal was not provided by

The shares-admin window shows up, and I can edit shares. Thanks.

[Bug 490546] Re: Installing Pidgin wipes out my Empathy account settings

2009-12-03 Thread Duncan Lithgow
@Dave: It doesn't look like anything has been lost. The issue is that on
a _default_ and _clean_ install of Ubuntu 9.10 (in which the default IM
client is Empathy) if I install pidgin it 'steals' all my IM accounts
and details from Empathy. The first time I re-ran empathy it had lost
access to it's account settings. I think that the cleanest way to try
and reproduce this would be in a VM with Ubuntu 9.10 and see what
happens if after configuring and running empathy you install pidgin.

[Bug 491662] Re: Empathy Crashes on Video Call

2009-12-03 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal
with as a '.crash' file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report
a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport
in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.

If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.
I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 481053] Re: A while after login, mouse and keyboard events go only to a single window

2009-12-03 Thread Spider
Dug more here, and it's not metacity at fault at all.

Reproducion steps: graphical bootup disabled,It also happens in the
first GDM login session. If you click a name to start with, then the
accessibility button is no longer interactive for clicks for some reason, and
vice-versa, if you start by clicking the accessibility options, mouse clicks
are afterwards not directed to the name list. Once you log in like this, the
events only go to the top panel, no matter what WM I use.

Attaching strace to metactiy shows events on the socket (fd/11) during mouse
clicks, but no response happens.

[Bug 491707] Re: nautilus[1950]: segfault at c ip 0811ac21 sp bf9c13c0 error 4 in nautilus[8048000+18f000]

In the same time I had problem with the bug 27014: Summary and folder

Just delete file folders.db from ~/.evolution/mail/local and start

[Bug 488187] Re: No easy way to make passwordless account

2009-12-03 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Thanks for the report, I agree the present situation is not optimal. But
don' t believe we wan't to fix this because password-less accounts are
unsecure, and we don't want to encourage users to work as in Windows. If
you want to perform administrative tasks, having a password is
essential.

OTOH, I'd really like to get bug 393854 fixed, to allow users to login
without typing their passwords if they want. This way, there's still a
password, but it is only needed when trying to get admin rights, when
connecting remotely or when unlocking the screen. The patch is there,
only somebody has to commit it.

[Bug 315002] Re: Changing your password does not take effect before session is restarted

2009-12-03 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
So thanks for providing the details now. This bug was not Triaged, it
was merely Confirmed. Sure, you had in mind the details, but nobody else
did. So, what was not mentioned in the report or the comments is:
changing your password does not allow you to authenticate via sudo.

You're really not helping the reporter nor Xubuntu in general by
preventing anybody to mark bugs as Incomplete. How do you know it's a
problem in users-admin? Isn't that a sudo or PAM issue? Is it happening
because the system-tools-backends use usermod to set the password
instead of passwd? Finding the right package is the first step, else
nobody will notice the report. And that's absolutely unrelated to
GNOME/Xfce flamewars.

BTW I'm not triaging bugs ATM, I'm fixing them, which requires
information to write patches. If you realized the debugging needed, I
could fix it *even if* I'm supposedly working in upstream GNOME and
despising Xfce people.

[Bug 490546] Re: Installing Pidgin wipes out my Empathy account settings

2009-12-03 Thread Dave Walker
Duncan:

I have a blank VM of Karmic. I will..

- install Pidgin
- load both Empathy and Pidgin

If I loose access to either application then I will confirm the bug
otherwise I will mark it as invalid. I will update the bug tomorrow
either way.

Sebastien:

I agree but I guess the reason we call it a bug is because there is some
unexpected behavior. If there is something going on between Pidgin and
Empathy then I guess we'll need to take a closer look.

fix option, to us the backed up configuration and also to generate a
new config. nothing worked, so i wanted to log on in comand line. when i
do so, i get blue screen. i can not enter anything. booting older
kernels doesn't work either.

i am very sorry for my bad description and wich i could give you more
info, but i don't have access to my files.

i found someone with a similar problem on the kubuntu irc and also
someone wrote in the ubuntu-form concernig this (or a very similar)

[Bug 268331] Re: evolution-alarm-notifier being killed

2009-12-03 Thread doyston
Is this bug still viewed as an issue, and is the Ubuntu bugs list the
right place to report it? As an end-user (not a developer) of Ubuntu
using fully updated 8.04 LTS in a small office network, it is very
frustrating that this bug is so severe that the popup alarm function of
Evolution 2.2.31 cannot be used (staff have missed meetings). The bug
is marked as Critical yet not confirmed? It is marked as present in the
Gnome Bugzilla pages (557449), yet not of sufficient importance for
anything to be done to solve it. The bug has been an issue for over a
year, yet if linux is to compete against MS products this surely needs
to be solved?

[Bug 487219] Re: since latest full ubuntu update sound is not good.

2009-12-03 Thread spirituality
That's an applet? It's the only one I could access from the 'add to
panel' menu (which is very limited btw). I guess the name is gnome-
volume-control (it says that's the command anyhow). But the one I
started out with after upgrading had a simple slide. This one has to
load before I can do anything. Much slower.

But I tried changing the sound volume permanently through
system preferences sound
You know, in the standard 'system' menu.

Today it seems to know my preference, but I don't know that it will
tomorrow.

In general, as an end user without an ubuntu geek as tech support, I
very much prefer instructions which use screen shots and/or menu
directions to instructions which involve the terminal.

Instructions like 'system preferences sound' with a screen shot at
the end to show how settings should look work very well.

[Bug 418337] Re: Administer the system for new user requires reboot

2009-12-03 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Sorry, it was not clear to me whether your report was a duplicate or
not, partly because I didn't have much information about the other
report. So yours is about the fact that new administrator users cannot
authenticate until the computer is rebooted. That may well come from the
same problem as bug 315002, but you're right, we cannot be sure for now.

I've investigated a little more, and I can reproduce the problem. It comes from
a failure to send a D-Bus message to the backends, with error:
Rejected send message, 4 matched rules; type=method_call, sender=:1.212
(uid=1004 pid=5031 comm=[DIRECTORY])
interface=org.freedesktop.SystemToolsBackends.Platform member=getPlatform
error name=(unset) requested_reply=0
destination=org.freedesktop.SystemToolsBackends (uid=0 pid=4418
comm=/usr/sbin/system-tools-backends))

So that may well be a problem with D-Bus, or only a problem in PAM that
affects D-Bus. Though I can confirm that other admin tasks using
PolicyKit or sudo are working.

[Bug 44082] Re: GNOME Panel icons (on right side) move apparently randomly on session start in some situations

2009-12-03 Thread Aaron Roydhouse
@Ahmad - yeah very annoying bug that affects laptop users every day they
use Ubuntu; But Gnome is I think mostly unfunded community development,
so if we don't like we should fix it ourselves, sponsor someone to fix
it, or be patient. Canonical should have an interest in fixing this as
it detracts from the daily user experience of their product. With so
many duplicate bugs of this being posted all the time, many subscribers,
many people cursing this same Ubuntu/Gnome bug for years, it would
certainly seem to be a bit more that a paper cut for users.

[Bug 491342] Re: assembly fails to build on armel/lucid

2009-12-03 Thread Dave Martin
I got a good build, but it's not quite right... the __sync_synchronize()
calls compile away to nothing, which is not what's intended.

For now, the package builds and should run fine on uniprocessor
platforms, so this should unblock you, but I'll provide an additional
patch shortly once I've worked out what the problem is...

In the meantime, can you disassemble debian/build/deb/glibc/gatomic.o
(if you still have the build tree), and double-check check whether there
is a call to __sync_val_compare_and_swap_4 in atomic_spin_lock ?

This will confirm that configure is working correctly.

You should also see the following if things worked correctly:

build log:
checking whether to use assembler code for atomic operations... arm
checking whether GCC supports atomic intrinsics... yes

debian/build/gdeb/config.h

[Bug 60448] Re: .xsession_errors file grows out of control saturates disk space

2009-12-03 Thread apinunt
It appears that the .xsession-errors file creates anew after each
reboot, moving the previous content to .xsession-errors.old and an
enormous size file can be eliminated by rebooting twice, but what is
causing the file to grow needs to be determined and fixed otherwise the
problem recurs. I think my problem has been found to be playing video
files and the driver for my video card, ATI Radeon Mobility M6 LY, is
not properly supported under Ubuntu 9.10, although it was previously
under 9.04 and earlier.

[Bug 488329] Re: Evolution crashes sometimes when clicking on the attached file arrow symbol on the left of 'save as' button

2009-12-03 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

Re: [Bug 443146] Re: No audio on Intel HDA audio.

2009-12-03 Thread Io)
Sure, will do

Thanks

2009/12/3 WeatherGod ben.v.r...@gmail.com:
lo), there are tags available to mark a bug report as happening during
an upgrade, if that is what you mean.  As for the autocorrecting, many
bugs were discovered and fixed in a very short period of time after the
Karmic release.  There were also some very specific use cases where an
upgrade did cause regressions, but I would hardly call the initial
 release wrong.

However, with the upcoming Lucid LTS, I encourage you to please try out
the alpha and beta versions and report bugs so that we can make sure
that the LTS upgrade is as smooth as possible.
