[Bug 408417] Re: No option to log in remotely via XDMCP

2009-12-20 Thread James
Just want to say that what ghook proposes will probably get this working
for most people. I had that file from having XDMCP set up in an earlier
verison and I can get in fine.

Could anyone test to see if the system prevents them from mounting
drives through a remote xsession? It keeps telling me that I'm
unauthorized. The exact same user account can do that when I'm logged
into a local graphic console but it denies me when I'm remote. Is there
a config file somewhere I need to change?

[Bug 440465] Re: removing pulseaudio breaks sound control

2009-12-20 Thread Dave Lentz
As you may have seen in other bugs, I've been working on rebuilding some
packages for those running without pulseaudio:
https://launchpad.net/~dtl131/+archive/ppa
ALSA users will be interested in the gnome packages. OSS/4 users will also want
the canberra packages.
NOTE: don't install the portaudio packages right now. I'm still hacking them to
get portaudio to work with OSS4.

This command will help you set gstreamer properties:
gstreamer-properties

Are there other programs in Karmic that are configured at build time to
only use pulse? Please let me know. I saw openjdk6 mentioned, but that
can be reconfigured without rebuilding (look in
/etc/java-6-openjdk/sound.properties file)

[Bug 482948] Re: OS powers down without mouse or keyboard input and has to be rebooted

2009-12-20 Thread BavarianPH
Latest on gnome-power-manager:

I thought, that the bug was fixed,

but realized, that another power-

manager, guidance-power-manager

along with xscreensaver 5.10

were actually active.

I adjusted this power manager,

within xscreensaver settings to

1440 minutes each.

I deleted gnome power manager,

which is still as useless as it was

ever since Karmic.

I auto-start xscreensaver, and I can

now safely watch & download TV &

movies, without the PC causing a

video signal loss, due to gnome-

power-manager.

Since no one is really willing to

fix this horrific bug,

I recommend to just shelve

the gnome-power-manager,

and install KDE's

guidance-power-manager

in consort with xscreensaver 5.10.

By the way, I am using Lucid Lynx

alpha which, in my opinion, works

better than Karmic.

Why even bother with Karmic if the

upgrade works even better? (mostly)

BavarianPH,

Ubuntu forever!

[Bug 498936] [NEW] crash when trying to select text or click "select all"

2009-12-20 Thread undernet
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

When trying to select text in the PDF file
"http://ciir.cs.umass.edu/pubfiles/ir-35.pdf";, evince crashes.
Using "edit>select all" also crashes it as well.

It hogs the cpu using all available processor. Happens every time I try
to perform the commands mentioned on this file. No problems with other
PDFs though.

I used a "report a problem" feature to submit details. My one is the
kernel labeled "daedalus"

I would paste the info from it here but I can not copy the text in the
"content of the report" box.

[Bug 473102] Re: Application hangs while trying to make echo test - no sound, cpu goes into 100%, program hangs

2009-12-20 Thread serrs

I found the deciding factor on both the HP-DV4 and Mini9. For Ekiga to hang
and use 100%, Ubuntu merely needs to have a bluetooth dongle plugged in. NO
pairing needed!

Happens with both laptops... and with 2 different Bluetooth dongles.
One of which has no history of pairing on either install.

Reproducible.

[Bug 473102] Re: Application hangs while trying to make echo test - no sound, cpu goes into 100%, program hangs

2009-12-20 Thread serrs
Hi,

I just installed 9.10 on a new consumer laptop, an HP DV4-1548dx. It
has the above problem, with integrated audio and also with selecting a
bluetooth headset.

My Dell Mini9, with 9.10 (remix) works fine with Ekiga.

I'm beginning to wonder if there is a hardware problem.

I tried to remove pulse audio as above, but the sound applet said it
could not find any devices, so I installed ubuntu-desktop again.

I'm willing to try things.

[Bug 492810] Re: Nautilus uses 100% cpu after downloading torrent

2009-12-20 Thread Azraele
I'm on it, I let you know if help is needed.
I it sounded offensive, I want you to know that it wasn't the goal of my
observation. However to find bugs in Ubuntu depends on the kind of usage you do
of the os, i'll make you an example:
I have a phenom II 965, I'm overclocking it that's why I need an accurate
temperatures monitoring. In other OS it's not a big deal, but it took me 2
hours to find a workaround because there are no k10 sensor scripts in ubuntu
yet, and I had to compile a makefile (which, goes by itself it's absurd because
this kind of architechtures exists from years nowadays).
The point is, an average pc user doesn't have the farthest idea on how to
compile a makefile scripts and or which are the rules of writing this kind of
files. An averege pc user doesn't even need the refined technology experience
that leads most of the time into bugs or lack of software support (sadly not my
case since using nautilus is a pretty basic task, as using an usbkey). The
large part of ubuntu's user probably aren't even aware of experiencing bugs
when they step into one, (an example of that could be the usb transfer speeds,
which are completely ridiculous, most of all if the transfer to be made is
between a win filesystem and a linux one) and start complaining about it on the
ubuntu forum hoping for someone to accidentally crash into a solution (that's
the case of the usb transfer speed, I could send you links which prove the
presence of the issue since 7.04).
Those factors, combined with the fact that the philosophy of free software
needs the user not only to be a consumer but to have an active role in the
developing of the software (philosophy that all of us can see not everybody is
fully embracing) absence of a pro team working on it for a livin' makes ubuntu
very slow on dealing with some kind of problems, and saying that it's only a
half of 1% of the people filing reports does not surprise me, not should you at
this point, and as I've already pointed out the cause is not always the fact
that ubuntu is a "rock solid system".

[Bug 399974] Re: 'Keep Aligned' option always resets to 'true' after desktop reload

2009-12-20 Thread LaM
Hello ^^,

sorry i'm new so i haven't provided any info at all(but i'm willing to
if u kindly point me out where to search ^^)

I'll explain:

After I've freshly installed 9.10 64bit, i moved my username folder content on
a separate partition mounted boottime from fstab.
At the beginning i thought was that, maybe i mistook something thou...no. It's
not that. Even remming the line and rebooting cause the same issue:

Icons being kept aligned(right click on desktop->uncheck 'Keep
Aligned'). After a reboot, relogin or simply refreshing hitting F5 i got
it rechecked.

Right now i'm checking the configuration manually(system
tools->configuration editor). I see that the variable associated to
that(/apps/nautilus/desktop-metadata/directory/nautilus-icon-view-keep-
aligned) it's not a bool but it's a string...even changin it to
false(and even after reboot it is still false) doesn't change
everything.

Hope this helpsthx :)

[Bug 498904] [NEW] Evolution Mail - I can't create contact lists & program locks up or crashes - concerned about my data

2009-12-20 Thread i...@dnphotoworks.com
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Tried to create Contact Lists following the instuctions. I drop and
drag the contacts into my newly created list and hit OK. When I go to
it to send an email, all I get is the name of the list and the email of
the first contact. The contacts in the list are listed in the Other
Emails and only 4 of 6 show. Tried this several times and restarted
Evolution Mail in attempt to make it "stick"

Also, I can't control-click or click on a hyperlink in an email I've
created to test the link - is there a way to do it?

Have read on line that program can lock up my data or loose my calendar,
contacts, etc. Should I be concerned about this? I don't understand
the instructions for backing up everything.

Program shuts down unexpectedly at times or locks up and I have to
reboot my computer.

Thank you for any assistance that you're able to provide.

[Bug 222907] Re: tomboy writes to disk every 10 seconds even when idle

2009-12-20 Thread Sandy Armstrong
Mukesh: Let me be a bit more clear: this bug should no longer exist in
Karmic, at all.

This bug was fixed in Mono, and Tomboy even applied a work around
(almost a year go, see the upstream bug) for users with older versions
of Mono installed.

If you are experiencing frequent write issues with Tomboy, it's probably
something new/different, so please file a new bug against Tomboy.

[Bug 492810] Re: Nautilus uses 100% cpu after downloading torrent

2009-12-20 Thread Chris Coulson
I've not had a chance to read every comment in this bug in detail yet,
but it seems that the backtraces provided were from running Nautilus
with sudo. There should be no need to do this, and that might be why the
backtrace doesn't show anything useful (if it is your users instance of
Nautilus which has broken, then running a second instance of nautilus
under GDB as a different user won't be much use)

Nautilus will exit if you run a new instance when there is already one
running in your session, so you can't just run "gdb nautilus". You need
to attach GDB to the instance of nautilus which is already running in
your session. The procedure for doing this is documented in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace#Already%20running%20programs

Please try and do this (only when Nautilus is consuming a lot of CPU).
It also helps sometimes to interrupt and obtain a backtrace several
times, to make sure that it is interrupted in roughly the same code path
each time.

If that is the case, the your nautils is ignoring the options set and that

Thanks for your report.

This error is caused by dpkg trying to configured an already configured

[Bug 492810] Re: Nautilus uses 100% cpu after downloading torrent

2009-12-20 Thread Dave Walker
Azraele:

I am sorry you feel this way. Please keep in mind that if we could
reproduce this problem on any other machine then it would be much easier
to resolve and fix. I have 5 test machines here and none of them,
including my primary machine has ever seen the memory or CPU utilization
you describe. My girlfriend has 2 laptops and both run Kubuntu. Her
sister uses Ubuntu. We all use various bitorrent clients and none of
them have even temporarily demonstrated this problem. I also feel a bit
obligated to point out that out of 13,000,000 people (and growing) using
any of the *buntu distros; less than 1/2 of 1% have filed a bug report
since Ubuntu's inception.

I personally have contributed at least a couple of hours of my life
(completely unpaid) getting your bug report together. It has been
forwarded upstream so the people who actually write this particular
software can get a chance to resolve the problem. You indicated this
has been a problem for about 20 months. I think it is appropriate to
assume it will take more than 5 days to respond to your bug report.

[Bug 498881] [NEW] Copy to library stalls

2009-12-20 Thread Winton Roseland
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

I am importing Led Zepplin III cd to library and it gets to "Out on the

maybe 1 percent per 1 to 1.5 hours. It is set to .ogg type. It has
worked on other albums, but always seems slow. Ubuntu 9.04 latest

[Bug 498875] [NEW] [users-admin] Changing Password to different case causes program to crash

2009-12-20 Thread Stephen Brown
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-tools

Changing the password to the same password, but in a different case,
causes the Change Password window to lock up.

for example:
Old password: password
New Password: PASSWORD

will reproduce the bug.

Using the commandline tool passwd to attempt to do the same, will result
in an error message stating "Bad: old and new password must differ by
more than just case"

[Bug 498876] [NEW] Mute led from HP dv6575us turns blue when sound is on or touched and red some seconds later

2009-12-20 Thread Diogo F. S. Ramos
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

The led from the multimedia have two states to reflect the mute state:
blue and red (orange for some people). When the sound is not muted the
color is supposed to be blue. When it is muted, red.

The color boots red but as soon as a user logs and the intro music is
played, it turns to blue. Some seconds latter, it is red again, although
the sound is not muted.

If I play some music, the color changes to blue and stay on that state
as long as there is music playing. If I press the mute button with the
music playing, the sound is muted but the color stays blue. If I then
pause the music, some seconds later the color turns to red.

If there is no music playing, when I press the button the color changes
to blue and, some seconds later, to red again, doesn't matter the actual
state of the mute.

The state of the led then seems to be related to whenever is music
playing or not, not the actual state of mute.

The actual muting works fine. The sound is muted and the icon at the
notification area changes accordingly.

I suffer from this bug in a Karmic freshly installed. I edited the
/usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.devicekit.power.policy as
stacktracer said but this is a workaround, not a real solution of this
bug. Please confirm (if so) that even unchecking the can_hibernate and
can_suspend box you still see the Hibernate and Suspend actions in the
shutdown menu.

[Bug 498856] Re: No Greek kb layout added after selecting it during installation

2009-12-20 Thread Alkis Georgopoulos
I'm putting gdm in the "Affects" list, as I think that it's a regression caused
by the new gdm that was introduced with Karmic.
Also, when I choose "Greek" in the gdm screen, I properly get a Greek layout,
but that's not the desired behavior, it should by default respect the system
settings.

Some more info:
$ grep XKBLAYOUT /etc/default/console-setup
XKBLAYOUT="us,gr"

$ gconftool-2 --get /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd/layouts
[us]

Also, I've seen that key messed up with something like
[us,gr,us\,gr \,]
but I'm not sure if that problem was because of gdm or because of
gnome-keyboard-properties.

[Bug 197762] Re: file transfers on USB flash key (pendrive) are slowing down with time

2009-12-20 Thread Przemysław Kulczycki
I've did some test and I managed to narrow this bug somehow.
My setup: Macbook 2,1; Intel USB controller; Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit.
1st try: Patriot Xporter 4GB flash drive - no problems.
2nd try: Patriot Xporter 16GB drive - slows down when writing to USB drive
under Gnome.
It worked fine when I booted to recovery mode (pure CLI, no Gnome), mounted the
drive manually and copied over 700MB of data.
It slowed down in Gnome, both with automounting, and with manual mounting
(though this time I can't guarantee that Gnome wasn't involved in that because
I just remounted the drive manually after the Gnome's autodetection).
So it seems that some subsystem invoked by Gnome (hal? udev? gvfs?) is
responsible for the slowdown.
Please tell me if this is relevant to this bug or should I file a new one?

I'm attaching the output of dstat ran while copying in Gnome.

[Bug 498856] [NEW] No Greek kb layout added after selecting it during installation

2009-12-20 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Steps to reproduce:

1) During installation from the Ubuntu 9.10 or Lucid alpha 1 desktop live cd,
select Greek as a language for installation
2) Select the Greek keyboard layout in appropriate installation step
2) Finish installation and reboot into the newly installed system

What I expected to happen:

 - Have the Greek keyboard layout added together with the default
English one.

What actually happened:

 - Only the English keyboard layout is present. The user has to manually
add the Greek layout. This is a regression over previous Ubuntu releases
where the Greek layout was added automatically.

Plus it seems to be a pretty serious bug since with the nautilus not working,

[Bug 498839] Re: No keyboard indicator applet shown after install with Greek kb

2009-12-20 Thread Thanos Lefteris
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gnome-panel

  Steps to reproduce:

  1) During installation from the Ubuntu 9.10 desktop live cd, select Greek as
a language for installation
  2) Select the Greek keyboard layout in appropriate installation step
  2) Finish installation and reboot into the newly installed system

  What I expected to happen:

   - See a keyboard indicator applet so that I can see what layout is
active and also change language with the mouse.

  What actually happened:

   - No keyboard indicator applet shown in the panel. The user has to
- figure out how to do it her self. There are two keyboard layouts
- configured in the system automatically (Greek and English), but no
- intuitive way to switch between them.
+ figure out how to do it herself. No Greek layout has also been added,
+ but I have reported it as a separate bug

[Bug 426185] Re: Gnome-panel fails to load various applets

2009-12-20 Thread Bob Huber
I have a fresh install of Karmic that I have been using since it came
out. I keep losing the weather applet (or parts of it) after reboot or
occasionally during a session. Panel applets in the notification area
(network & speaker) occasionally double up (2 of them with 1
functional).A reboot will usually fix everything except the weather
applet.I have looked over all the posts and tried everything I can think
of including removing and replacing the gnome-panel and the applet-
addons via the SPM. Very annoying along with the other problems that I
have tackled and repaired. DELL Insipron 531, 3 gig ram , AMD 64 X2
Nvidia Vidio running the 64 bit version of Karmic.I am a new user to
Linux and love the flexibility the Ubuntu desktop but am very
frustrated with the instability of the system.

Hi Guys,

I have realised I am not a shell script wizard and so I shall pass this
onto someone who is, I have this working in bash, but ideally it needs
to be working in /bin/sh. Also I have just realised we would be patching
GDM instead of gnome-session which the bug is actually in I wish
someone could just cleanup the patch upstream...

[Bug 482597] Re: no dialpad to make phonecalls

2009-12-20 Thread Owenlynx
With google voice & gizmo to answer a call you must press 1 to talk or 2
to send to voice mail. This is about to become the largest sip provider
in the world with google's acquisition of gizmo. Also see this link

I have the same problem after I added weather applets (3 currently).
Like the others I can sometimes login without problems. I am happy to
provide additional information if needed. Regards

[Bug 431146] Re: Gnome Power Manager fails to put display to sleep

2009-12-20 Thread ENigma885
@João Gomes
Exactly, I'm suggesting to clean install. However, I'm not pretty sure of the
results. All I said is a just hypothesis of the problem being related to the
Jaunty-Karmic update process.

And I was trying to confirm my hypothesis by asking all the affected ppl
if they've updated to Karmic through Jaunty or not.

[Bug 496253] Re: login keyring does not get unlocked at login

2009-12-20 Thread Asif Youssuff
I am having this issue on Lucid, with

$ apt-cache policy gdm
gdm:
  Installed: 2.29.1-0ubuntu9
  Candidate: 2.29.1-0ubuntu9
  Version table:
 *** 2.29.1-0ubuntu9 0
500 http://mirror.anl.gov lucid/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Should this bug be linked to gdm as well?
