Just want to say that what ghook proposes will probably get this working for most people. I had that file from having XDMCP set up in an earlier verison and I can get in fine. [Bug 482948] Re: OS powers down without mouse or keyboard input and has to be rebooted
Latest on gnome-power-manager: I thought, that the bug was fixed, but realized, that another power- manager, guidance-power-manager along with xscreensaver 5.10 were actually active. I adjusted this power manager, within xscreensaver settings to 1440 minutes each. I deleted gnome power manager, which is still as useless as it was ever since Karmic. I auto-start xscreensaver, and I can now safely watch & download TV & movies, without the PC causing a video signal loss, due to gnome- power-manager. Since no one is really willing to fix this horrific bug, I recommend to just shelve the gnome-power-manager, and install KDE's guidance-power-manager in consort with xscreensaver 5.10. By the way, I am using Lucid Lynx alpha which, in my opinion, works better than Karmic. Why even bother with Karmic if the upgrade works even better? [Bug 492810] Re: Nautilus uses 100% cpu after downloading torrent
I'm on it, I let you know if help is needed. I it sounded offensive, I want you to know that it wasn't the goal of my observation. However to find bugs in Ubuntu depends on the kind of usage you do of the os, i'll make you an example: I have a phenom II 965, I'm overclocking it that's why I need an accurate temperatures monitoring. In other OS it's not a big deal, but it took me 2 hours to find a workaround because there are no k10 sensor scripts in ubuntu yet, and I had to compile a makefile (which, goes by itself it's absurd because this kind of architechtures exists from years nowadays). The point is, an average pc user doesn't have the farthest idea on how to compile a makefile scripts and or which are the rules of writing this kind of files. An averege pc user doesn't even need the refined technology experience that leads most of the time into bugs or lack of software support (sadly not my case since using nautilus is a pretty basic task, as using an usbkey). The large part of ubuntu's user probably aren't even aware of experiencing bugs when they step into one, (an example of that could be the usb transfer speeds, which are completely ridiculous, most of all if the transfer to be made is between a win filesystem and a linux one) and start complaining about it on the ubuntu forum hoping for someone to accidentally crash into a solution (that's the case of the usb transfer speed, I could send you links which prove the presence of the issue since 7.04). Those factors, combined with the fact that the philosophy of free software needs the user not only to be a consumer but to have an active role in the developing of the software (philosophy that all of us can see not everybody is fully embracing) absence of a pro team working on it for a livin' makes ubuntu very slow on dealing with some kind of problems, and saying that it's only a half of 1% of the people filing reports does not surprise me, not should you at this point, and as I've already pointed out the cause is not always the fact that ubuntu is a "rock solid system". -- Nautilus uses 100% cpu after downloading torrent https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/492810 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 492810] Re: Nautilus uses 100% cpu after downloading torrent
I've not had a chance to read every comment in this bug in detail yet, but it seems that the backtraces provided were from running Nautilus with sudo. There should be no need to do this, and that might be why the backtrace doesn't show anything useful (if it is your users instance of Nautilus which has broken, then running a second instance of nautilus under GDB as a different user won't be much use) Nautilus will exit if you run a new instance when there is already one running in your session, so you can't just run "gdb nautilus". You need to attach GDB to the instance of nautilus which is already running in your session. The procedure for doing this is documented in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace#Already%20running%20programs Please try and do this (only when Nautilus is consuming a lot of CPU). It also helps sometimes to interrupt and obtain a backtrace several times, to make sure that it is interrupted in roughly the same code path each time. ** Changed in: nautilus (Ubuntu) Status: Triaged => Incomplete -- Nautilus uses 100% cpu after downloading torrent https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/492810 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 498876] [NEW] Mute led from HP dv6575us turns blue when sound is on or touched and red some seconds later
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon The led from the multimedia have two states to reflect the mute state: blue and red (orange for some people). When the sound is not muted the color is supposed to be blue. When it is muted, red. The color boots red but as soon as a user logs and the intro music is played, it turns to blue. Some seconds latter, it is red again, although the sound is not muted. If I play some music, the color changes to blue and stay on that state as long as there is music playing. If I press the mute button with the music playing, the sound is muted but the color stays blue. If I then pause the music, some seconds later the color turns to red. If there is no music playing, when I press the button the color changes to blue and, some seconds later, to red again, doesn't matter the actual state of the mute. The state of the led then seems to be related to whenever is music playing or not, not the actual state of mute. The actual muting works fine. The sound is muted and the icon at the notification area changes accordingly. [Bug 498856] Re: No Greek kb layout added after selecting it during installation
I'm putting gdm in the "Affects" list, as I think that it's a regression caused by the new gdm that was introduced with Karmic. Also, when I choose "Greek" in the gdm screen, I properly get a Greek layout, but that's not the desired behavior, it should by default respect the system settings. Some more info: $ grep XKBLAYOUT /etc/default/console-setup XKBLAYOUT="us,gr" $ gconftool-2 --get /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd/layouts [us] Also, I've seen that key messed up with something like [us,gr,us\,gr \,] but I'm not sure if that problem was because of gdm or because of gnome-keyboard-properties. ** Package changed: ubuntu => gdm (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: gdm (Ubuntu) Status: New => Confirmed -- No Greek kb layout added after selecting it during installation https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/498856 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 197762] Re: file transfers on USB flash key (pendrive) are slowing down with time
I've did some test and I managed to narrow this bug somehow. My setup: Macbook 2,1; Intel USB controller; Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit. 1st try: Patriot Xporter 4GB flash drive - no problems. 2nd try: Patriot Xporter 16GB drive - slows down when writing to USB drive under Gnome. It worked fine when I booted to recovery mode (pure CLI, no Gnome), mounted the drive manually and copied over 700MB of data. It slowed down in Gnome, both with automounting, and with manual mounting (though this time I can't guarantee that Gnome wasn't involved in that because I just remounted the drive manually after the Gnome's autodetection). So it seems that some subsystem invoked by Gnome (hal? udev? gvfs?) is responsible for the slowdown. Please tell me if this is relevant to this bug or should I file a new one? I'm attaching the output of dstat ran while copying in Gnome. ** Attachment added: "dstat-sdb1-gnome-automount-try1.txt" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/36999761/dstat-sdb1-gnome-automount-try1.txt -- file transfers on USB flash key (pendrive) are slowing down with time https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/197762 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 214370] Re: Logout/Shutdown Sound Not Working
Hi Guys, I have realised I am not a shell script wizard and so I shall pass this onto someone who is, I have this working in bash, but ideally it needs to be working in /bin/sh. Also I have just realised we would be patching GDM instead of gnome-session which the bug is actually in I wish someone could just cleanup the patch upstream... -- Logout/Shutdown Sound Not Working https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/214370 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-session in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 498839] [NEW] No keyboard indicator applet shown after install with Greek kb
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-panel Steps to reproduce: 1) During installation from the Ubuntu 9.10 desktop live cd, select Greek as a language for installation 2) Select the Greek keyboard layout in appropriate installation step 2) Finish installation and reboot into the newly installed system What I expected to happen: - See a keyboard indicator applet so that I can see what layout is active and also change language with the mouse. What actually happened: - No keyboard indicator applet shown in the panel. The user has to figure out how to do it her self. There are two keyboard layouts configured in the system automatically (Greek and English), but no intuitive way to switch between them. ** Affects: gnome-panel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: greek ** Description changed: Binary package hint: gnome-panel Steps to reproduce: - 1) During installation from the desktop live cd, select Greek as a language for installation + 1) During installation from the Ubuntu 9.10 desktop live cd, select Greek as a language for installation 2) Select the Greek keyboard layout in appropriate installation step 2) Finish installation and reboot into the newly installed system What I expected to happen: - - See a keyboard indicator applet so that I can see what layout is + - See a keyboard indicator applet so that I can see what layout is active and also change language with the mouse. [Bug 482597] Re: no dialpad to make phonecalls
With google voice & gizmo to answer a call you must press 1 to talk or 2 to send to voice mail. This is about to become the largest sip provider in the world with google's acquisition of gizmo. [Bug 431146] Re: Gnome Power Manager fails to put display to sleep
@João Gomes Exactly, I'm suggesting to clean install. However, I'm not pretty sure of the results. All I said is a just hypothesis of the problem being related to the Jaunty-Karmic update process. And I was trying to confirm my hypothesis by asking all the affected ppl if they've updated to Karmic through Jaunty or not. -- Gnome Power Manager fails to put display to sleep https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/431146 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
