[Bug 503855] Re: Make gdm depend on gnome-session

2010-01-08 Thread PeterPall
I understand, - and suddenly started working after reading your mail - only
that gdm-simple-slave definitively stops to respond to anything except of a
signal 9 after klicking on it.
But after the last update of my system it no longer segfaults, and thus doesn't
give apport no chance to automatically generate a crash report.

The contents of my /etc/default/apport is:
{{{
 set this to 0 to disable apport, or to 1 to enable it
# you can temporarily override this with
# sudo service apport start force_start=1
enabled=1

# set maximum core dump file size (default: 209715200 bytes == 200 MB)
maxsize=209715200
}}}

Is there anything I can do in this case?

Thanks in advance.

 Gunter.

same here.

I tried to edit the GRUB to make starting process faster. But can't see
it unless in Ubuntu 8.10. I use UNR 9.10 on a EEE-PC 900.

[Bug 486154] Re: System beep broken in Karmic despite heroic efforts to fix it

2010-01-08 Thread Grondr
Yes, I agree re part 3---safer to leave it in as long as metacity claims
responsibility. (But it has no business claiming responsibility---leave
that to PulseAudio.)

We haven't heard yet about getting this bug punted to the metacity
folks, so it may be time take more direct action in letting them know
about it...

[Bug 505065] [NEW] [lucid] Bad behavior with unreadable files

2010-01-08 Thread Louis Simard
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

If a user does not have read permissions for a file s/he is trying to
open, while it is already playing something, Totem becomes unresponsive
to his/her commands until it is closed and restarted.

Prerequisites:

1. Have the package example-content installed, or two media files of your
choosing.
2. Designate one as ReadableFile. Make sure it's readable (chown me:me
ReadableFile; chmod u+r ReadableFile).
3. Designate one as UnreadableFile. Make sure it's NOT readable (chown
root:root UnreadableFile; chmod o-rwx UnreadableFile).

Steps to reproduce:

1. Open Totem.
2. Menu File/Open, choose ReadableFile.
3. Menu File/Open, choose UnreadableFile.
4. Four dialog boxes appear on top of each other, each saying the same thing
about an unreadable file. (Expected: one dialog is enough ;)
5. Menu File/Open, choose ReadableFile.
6. Nothing happens. (Expected: ReadableFile starts playing again)

This also happens if the File menu's recent entries are used to play
UnreadableFile.

[Bug 504687] Re: shortcoming in french translation of AisleRiot

2010-01-08 Thread Aron Xu
Howdy Claude! Sorry for inconvenience, but assigning bugs to the respective
translators teams is a standard procedure dealing with bugs against Ubuntu
translations.
As for gnome-games, a package in main, translations will be updated during
every language pack update, so you can just fix it on Launchpad and turn the
status of this bug to Fix committed. When new language packs available, there
will be announcement at ubuntu-translators mailing list. AFAIK, there might be
an update for Karmic at the same time while 8.04.4 being out.

2010-01-08 Thread SwaJime
Ok ... I removed those files, and ran the command you gave me. It gave
me 5700 lines of output!

For some reason, when I did that, all of the programs started like they
were supposed to. And they started again like they were supposed to on
the next reboot too.

I have added the decoded symbol names from the ddeb. From this you can
see that get_session_command_for_file likely causes the double free.
Looking at that code I noticed this:

static gboolean
get_session_command_for_file (const char *file,
  char  **command)
{
GKeyFile   *key_file;
GError *error;
char   *full_path;
char   *exec;
gbooleanret;
gbooleanres;

exec = NULL;
...
exec = g_key_file_get_string (key_file,
  G_KEY_FILE_DESKTOP_GROUP,
  G_KEY_FILE_DESKTOP_KEY_TRY_EXEC,
  NULL);
if (exec != NULL) {
res = is_prog_in_path (exec);
g_free (exec);

if (! res) {
g_debug ("GdmSessionDirect: Command not found: %s",
 G_KEY_FILE_DESKTOP_KEY_TRY_EXEC);
goto out;
}
}
...
out:
g_free (exec);

return ret;
}

So exec gets g_free'd twice if there is a TryExec key and is_prog_in_path fails.

[Bug 466123] Re: When trying to play a DVD, an error message is displayed: No URI handler implemented for "dvd"

2010-01-08 Thread Dave Walker
I can reproduce that error on a vanilla installation of Ubuntu. Here
are the stops I took to resolve the problem on both Ubuntu 9.10 x86_32
and Kubuntu 9.10 x86_64.

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
sudo apt-get install libdvdread4
sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh

Please test these changes and post any follow-up questions here.

[Bug 505045] [NEW] DHCP timeout

2010-01-08 Thread Ursus
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Package: DHCP3
System: 9.10 UNR
BCM 4312 NIC with the WL driver
/var/cache/apt/archives/dhcp3-client_3.1.2-1ubuntu7_i386.deb
/var/cache/apt/archives/dhcp3-common_3.1.2-1ubuntu7_i386.deb

wifi will not connect automatically upon booting or connection (when not
starting wifi from boot). DHCP times out. I can manually configure and give an
IP address. It did work when I initially installed 9.10, but failed a few days
later. Also, it worked when I configured to give a static IP from the router
upon a DHCP request (static DHCP), but again only for a few days.
I increased the default time to 60s in the dhclient.conf file, but no joy.

Attached is a cut from the daemon log, and also a cut from my router log
that shows the DHCP server leasing an IP address to the client.

[Bug 378668] Re: Cursor in terminal behaves badly with special characters present

2010-01-08 Thread Charlie Kravetz
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xfce4-terminal

  Both xfce4-terminal and gnome-terminal are affected, but not the text-
  only terminals (alt+f1, f2 etc.). So probably the package hint is
  wrong...

- With special characters present before the $ sign, when going back to the

+ How to reproduce (cf. always my attachment):
  1. Open the terminal (in X, not the real text-only screens)
  2. Create a folder with special characters in it, e.g. with german special
characters: $ mkdir abcäöü
  3. Go to the special character folder. $ cd abcäöü
- 4. Type some rubbish until you reach the end of the screen (in my attached
example: "abcdefghijklmnopqrst". As soon as you have filled up the last column
(the "t" in my case), the cursor jumps correctly to the next line.
- 5. Hit backspace or the left cursor once. Backspace eats 2 characters instead
of one if one special character is present (3 if there are 2; 4 if there are 3
etc.).
- 6. Hit return. Bash says it does not know the rubbish that you've actually
typed (not the rubbish that was displayed). So obviously this is a display
problem, not an input problem.

  Instead of step 4, you can also type some new rubbish. It will be
  inserted into the old rubbish exactly the way you type it, but it won't
  display correctly. It's like a blind flight: As long as you know exactly
  where you are, you'll land on the airport. But never try to tell your
  position from what you see...

  The bug is most probably not a duplicate of Bug #238055 or Bug #88504.
  The symptoms described there don't match ours here.

[Bug 505029] [NEW] Keyboard repeat rate is often reset

2010-01-08 Thread Reuben Thomas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

My keyboard repeat rate resets every so often; I tend to notice it once
every few days. This is on a machine whose USB keyboard is always
connected, and the machine itself is rarely rebooted; I tend to stay
logged in for weeks at a time.

2010-01-08 Thread madbiologist
I can open this file, but a blank page is displayed. If I select all, I
can see the highlighting showing where the text should be, but there is
still no reverse-video text.

Running evince from a command prompt produces the following errors in
the terminal:

Error: Found a bad table definition on true type definition, trying to
continue...
Error: Found a bad table definition on true type definition, trying to

some font thing failed

This sequence is repeated many times.

Possibly a corrupt file? Can Adobe Reader display it, and does it show
any errors?

I have attached the output of pdffonts.

[Bug 504698] [NEW] gnome-screensaver locks up the machine after putting screen in power-save mode

2010-01-08 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: xscreensaver-gl-extra

The screensaver has been locking up the machine (as in not exiting when
detecting mouse or keyboard activity) some time (30 minutes consistently
replicate the problem here, ymmv) after powering down the screen. I have
not tested other screensavers in the same package - this is the next
step now that I have pinpointed the weirdness.

The setup is an Acer Aspire One 150 netbook (Atom, Intel GMA 945) with
an external IBM A70 monitor in a dual-headed configuration. Compiz is
off due to bug #486056 and framebuffer is set to 2048x768 pixels due to
bug #486072 (could be 1024 + 1280 pixels wide and 1024 pixels tall).

The machine is not crashed and it is possible to ssh to it. I tried
killing the two cubicgrid (there were two of them - this could be the
problem) processes both under a single gnome-screensaver process, but
they refused to die even with a "sudo kill -9". Gnome-screensaver died
politely when ordered. Restarting the GDM or X does not cure the problem
because the cubegrid processes continue as zombies. The only way I found
to recover the machine was to "shutdown -r" it via a ssh session, but
that is not surprising (and is a last resort).

[Bug 503855] Re: Make gdm depend on gnome-session

2010-01-08 Thread Chris Coulson
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 504185] Re: Sidepane misaligned (a few pixels too high)

2010-01-08 Thread Kai Jauch
Your screenshot shows an older version of nautilus, mine looked the same before
the update to 2.29.1-0ubuntu1 (I'm using Lucid).
There apparently were some UI changes upstream:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/1:2.29.1-0ubuntu1

My customizations only include disabling the toolbar, but the
misalignment is also visible when the toolbar is enabled.

2010-01-08 Thread Michael Coupet
I'm still having problems with pidgin, sonata, and liferea. Though the
other problems are solved (except for flash, embedding gstreamer, and
previously mentioned drawing problems). Webkit is broken, both epiphany
and midori have broken see-through rendering when gtk widgets are
present on the page (google.com displays terribly for example, while
ubuntuforums works perfectly). Sonata is broken because it uses
egg.trayicon over gtk.statusicon (though it implements both). Forcing it
to use gtk.statusicon makes it work perfectly. And chromium still has
flash issues too, but since it doesn't use gtk on web pages it doesn't
have the problems epiphany or midori have, but it doesn't display the
titlebar correctly when using gtk theme.

[Bug 240437] Re: Creating an user destroys most of users and groups configuration

2010-01-08 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
What I asked Xande to test should be interesting for you too:
One interesting test (for both of you) would be to start the scripts before
starting users-admin, and to compare the startup times: start users-admin once,
run it again and see the time it needs, then wait for 5 minutes so that the
scripts to stop automatically, and restart users-admin to compare. The first
time is needed so that the tool is loaded in memory, but it should not be taken
as reference for anything.

You don't actually need to do anything other than starting and closing
the tool, noting the (approximate) time it needs to be up. Does the
users list appear the second time? Is it visible the third time (i.e.
after waiting 5 minutes without using users-admin)?

I can't confirm of deny Imre's comment (I am no longer running nautilus

that annoying. Even if his "fix" works, users should NEVER be expected

hour, depending on what I'm working on).

[Bug 85291] Re: filesystems are never fsck'ed if they live on removable USB disks

2010-01-08 Thread Tommy Trussell
@loke: surely everyone cares about a healthy file system, but the
problem is thorny. I see several blueprints to handle "ordinary"
filesystem fsck -- such as moving the fsck to shutdown, disabling fsck
on battery power, asking user if they want to schedule it, etc. None of
the ones I found seems to include a use case involving external drives.

@Andres Mujica: I just looked at the status of the PartitionManagement
spec and blueprint, and it has been marked as "superseded." Its use
cases also didn't include fsck on an external drive, so I think another
blueprint and spec needs to be created to handle this use case.

I just did a few searches on blueprints, and there was a lot of work (in
the Gutsy era) on handling a full filesystem situation, though from my
reading this apparently involved a full root filesystem. It was also
focused on making the system usable enough to recover from the full
filesystem situation on boot -- not a full filesystem being mounted on
an already active system.

What does modern Gnome do or say when you fill an external USB drive?
Does it put up a warning bubble? I believe it doesn't but I haven't
tried yet in Karmic. A process that watches for a full filesystem might
also watch for other important notices regarding filesystems. I think
someone proposed some dbus messages getting created to handle filesystem
fsck situations, and that would definitely be a place to look at.

I have an old PowerBook running Ubuntu 6.06.1 Dapper PowerPC running
XFCE and it pops up a warning whenever I mount a filesystem having less
than 10% free space. I haven't tried a damaged system that needs a fsck.
BUT I believe the full warning is an option in the file manager, or
maybe I activated a daemon for that. I don't remember -- I installed
that system a long time ago. ;-)

[Bug 504928] [NEW] Occasionally dumped to login screen when dragging cards in Aisleriot "Spider".

2010-01-08 Thread Matthew Pirocchi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-games

Sometimes (maybe every 10 games or so), when I'm dragging a card in
Aisleriot "Spider", I get dumped to the Ubuntu login screen. This has
been going on since at least the Karmic beta, perhaps longer. I'm not
entirely sure how to reproduce this bug, so I realize this report isn't
particular helpful, but I figure it's better than nothing. It seems
strange that a simple solitaire game would be able to crash this hard.

[Bug 504918] [NEW] Bug 606412 Evolution unstable/system reboot

2010-01-08 Thread kikl
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

The computer suddenly reboots/switches user, when opening evolution. This
happens completely randomly. It doesn't matter whether I use the panel, docky
or the Application/Internet/Evolution. The same thing happens. I wish I could
send you additional information once it happens, but I don't know how, since
all applications are suddenly closed and the computer reboots.
 I filed this bug under

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=606412

I hope the necessary information for determining the failure is going to
be added to this bug report.

Regards,

kikl

[Bug 399974] Re: 'Keep Aligned' option always resets to 'true' after desktop reload

2010-01-08 Thread Imre Gergely
+1 on the 'Keep Aligned' problem on Karmic 64bit, just to keep the list
long ;)

One thing I noticed: it DOESN'T rearrange the icons if I press F5, it
just rechecks that option. Neither does relogging change the icons
arrangement on the Desktop.

- login, uncheck 'Keep Aligned'
- arrange icons the way I want to
- press F5, option 'Keep Aligned' gets checked BUT icons stay in place
- uncheck option again, I can arrange the icons again the way I want, no
restrictions
- logout/login, option is checked, but icons still remain the way I left them

ONLY when I actually CHECK the 'Keep Aligned' option, only then are the
icons arranged.

To further complicate things:

- after checking the option, icons get rearranged (they are aligned)
- unchecking AND pressing F5 brings the icons back to their original position
(not arranged)

Maybe it's just me, or is this not THAT annoying as people say ? Just
uncheck the box arrange stuff how you want it, the forget about being
checked or not. Next time you have to arrange something, just uncheck
the option. I repeat, it's not re-arranging anything by pressing F5 or
relogging.

2010-01-08 Thread yarly
Yes they are two different packages. As far as I understand though,
both XScreenSaver and Gnome-screensaver were both disabled the same way
using "poke" to reset the timer. So it shouldn't really matter what
mplayer lists as "XScreensaver", because the end result should reset the
timer for whatever screensaver was active.

[Bug 449910] Re: Certain notification area icons are invisible

2010-01-08 Thread tenjin
This is happening to me as well, namely the Network Manager applet icon.
Sometimes I can get the
icon to come back when I unplug my ethernet and plug back in, but not always.
When I right click
the blank space (where the Network Manager icon should be) and do About it says
Notification Area instead. When I try to remove it my gnome panel flicks on and
off, which
makes the mouse focus on and off, basically making the desktop unusable. Had to
go to
safe mode and add the applet back to the panel. I am running a non-default icon
theme and
compiz, will test more as a default desktop and post back.

[Bug 494394] Re: Cannot login with gdm after upgrading to lucid

2010-01-08 Thread Fabio Duran Verdugo
Yes, I was also affect by this, but if you revise your directory
permissions with recovery mode and root user, you can see this: all in
/home/users/ user 500 and group 500 witn only read permissions,

fa...@optimusprime:/home$ ls -ll
total 36
drwx--. 106 500 500 12288 2010-01-08 15:53 fabio
drwx--.   2 root  root  16384 2009-08-26 17:36 lost+found

if you change for your home chown -R user:group_user

After some time I realized this and I could solve my problem.

[Bug 503855] Re: Make gdm depend on gnome-session

2010-01-08 Thread PeterPall
Tried it again: Instructed synaptic to completely remove gnome-session,
- and restarted the computer.

The result was again, that gdm hung itselves up as soon as i clicked on
my username, so the problem is reproducible at least on my computer.

ps -x |grep gdm reported while gdm was hanging:
{{{
 1514 tty1 S+ 0:00 /usr/sbin/gdm-binary
 1583 tty1 S+ 0:00 /usr/lib/gdm/gdm-simple-slave --display-id
/org/gnome/DisplayManager/Display1
 1585 tty7 Ss+0:00 /usr/bin/X :0 -br -verbose -auth
/var/run/gdm/auth-for-gdm-18EJcG/database -nolisten tcp vt7
 1624 tty1 S+ 0:00 /usr/lib/gdm/gdm-session-worker
 1865 tty4 S+ 0:00 grep gdm
}}}

restarted gdm, but this time didn't klick on my username but only kill
gdm and saved all logfiles this produced. Will attach them to this
comment as soon as I find out how.

[Bug 503298] Re: insufficient zoom (pdf are not zoomed properly)

2010-01-08 Thread dev.konverje
yes i was using my 32-inch 1360x768 Sony Bravia TV as my monitor for
display as my 19-inch Viewsonic 1440x900 screen had gone for repairs.

now i am using my 19-inch screen and all is fine.

i suppose it was the fault of using the TV as a computer monitor.

I do understand that pdfs are print formats, i.e. they are rendered
exactly the way they are to be printed. a pdf rendered @100% zoom on my
19-inch screen is more or less (+/- 0.2 inches height and width) same
size as the printed document (8.5x11inches). but @100% on my 32-inch TV
results only a 'page' 2x4inches
