[Bug 503855] Re: Make gdm depend on gnome-session
I understand, - and suddenly started working after reading your mail - only that gdm-simple-slave definitively stops to respond to anything except of a signal 9 after klicking on it. But after the last update of my system it no longer segfaults, and thus doesn't give apport no chance to automatically generate a crash report. The contents of my /etc/default/apport is: {{{ set this to 0 to disable apport, or to 1 to enable it # you can temporarily override this with # sudo service apport start force_start=1 enabled=1 # set maximum core dump file size (default: 209715200 bytes == 200 MB) maxsize=209715200 }}} Is there anything I can do in this case? Thanks in advance. [Bug 505065] [NEW] [lucid] Bad behavior with unreadable files
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: totem If a user does not have read permissions for a file s/he is trying to open, while it is already playing something, Totem becomes unresponsive to his/her commands until it is closed and restarted. Prerequisites: 1. Have the package example-content installed, or two media files of your choosing. 2. Designate one as ReadableFile. Make sure it's readable (chown me:me ReadableFile; chmod u+r ReadableFile). 3. Designate one as UnreadableFile. Make sure it's NOT readable (chown root:root UnreadableFile; chmod o-rwx UnreadableFile). Steps to reproduce: 1. Open Totem. 2. Menu File/Open, choose ReadableFile. 3. Menu File/Open, choose UnreadableFile. 4. Four dialog boxes appear on top of each other, each saying the same thing about an unreadable file. (Expected: one dialog is enough ;) 5. Menu File/Open, choose ReadableFile. 6. Nothing happens. (Expected: ReadableFile starts playing again) This also happens if the File menu's recent entries are used to play UnreadableFile. [Bug 504687] Re: shortcoming in french translation of AisleRiot
Howdy Claude! Sorry for inconvenience, but assigning bugs to the respective translators teams is a standard procedure dealing with bugs against Ubuntu translations. As for gnome-games, a package in main, translations will be updated during every language pack update, so you can just fix it on Launchpad and turn the status of this bug to Fix committed. When new language packs available, there will be announcement at ubuntu-translators mailing list. AFAIK, there might be an update for Karmic at the same time while 8.04.4 being out. -- shortcoming in french translation of AisleRiot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/504687 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-games in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 505045] [NEW] DHCP timeout
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus Package: DHCP3 System: 9.10 UNR BCM 4312 NIC with the WL driver /var/cache/apt/archives/dhcp3-client_3.1.2-1ubuntu7_i386.deb /var/cache/apt/archives/dhcp3-common_3.1.2-1ubuntu7_i386.deb wifi will not connect automatically upon booting or connection (when not starting wifi from boot). DHCP times out. I can manually configure and give an IP address. It did work when I initially installed 9.10, but failed a few days later. Also, it worked when I configured to give a static IP from the router upon a DHCP request (static DHCP), but again only for a few days. I increased the default time to 60s in the dhclient.conf file, but no joy. Attached is a cut from the daemon log, and also a cut from my router log that shows the DHCP server leasing an IP address to the client. [Bug 504698] [NEW] gnome-screensaver locks up the machine after putting screen in power-save mode
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Binary package hint: xscreensaver-gl-extra The screensaver has been locking up the machine (as in not exiting when detecting mouse or keyboard activity) some time (30 minutes consistently replicate the problem here, ymmv) after powering down the screen. I have not tested other screensavers in the same package - this is the next step now that I have pinpointed the weirdness. The setup is an Acer Aspire One 150 netbook (Atom, Intel GMA 945) with an external IBM A70 monitor in a dual-headed configuration. Compiz is off due to bug #486056 and framebuffer is set to 2048x768 pixels due to bug #486072 (could be 1024 + 1280 pixels wide and 1024 pixels tall). The machine is not crashed and it is possible to ssh to it. I tried killing the two cubicgrid (there were two of them - this could be the problem) processes both under a single gnome-screensaver process, but they refused to die even with a "sudo kill -9". Gnome-screensaver died politely when ordered. Restarting the GDM or X does not cure the problem because the cubegrid processes continue as zombies. The only way I found to recover the machine was to "shutdown -r" it via a ssh session, but that is not surprising (and is a last resort). [Bug 503855] Re: Make gdm depend on gnome-session
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit. If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using /usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding. ** Changed in: gdm (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Invalid -- Make gdm depend on gnome-session https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/503855 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

I'm still having problems with pidgin, sonata, and liferea. Though the other problems are solved (except for flash, embedding gstreamer, and previously mentioned drawing problems). Webkit is broken, both epiphany and midori have broken see-through rendering when gtk widgets are present on the page (google.com displays terribly for example, while ubuntuforums works perfectly). Sonata is broken because it uses egg.trayicon over gtk.statusicon (though it implements both). Forcing it to use gtk.statusicon makes it work perfectly. And chromium still has flash issues too, but since it doesn't use gtk on web pages it doesn't have the problems epiphany or midori have, but it doesn't display the titlebar correctly when using gtk theme. [Bug 240437] Re: Creating an user destroys most of users and groups configuration
What I asked Xande to test should be interesting for you too: One interesting test (for both of you) would be to start the scripts before starting users-admin, and to compare the startup times: start users-admin once, run it again and see the time it needs, then wait for 5 minutes so that the scripts to stop automatically, and restart users-admin to compare. The first time is needed so that the tool is loaded in memory, but it should not be taken as reference for anything. You don't actually need to do anything other than starting and closing the tool, noting the (approximate) time it needs to be up. Does the users list appear the second time? Is it visible the third time (i.e. after waiting 5 minutes without using users-admin)? -- Creating an user destroys most of users and groups configuration https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/240437 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to liboobs in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

I can't confirm of deny Imre's comment (I am no longer running nautilus 2.28 because of this bug), but I can say that yes, this bug really is that annoying. Even if his "fix" works, users should NEVER be expected to do something as tedious as uncheck a check box every time they wish to move an icon on the deskop (which for me, is several dozen times an hour, depending on what I'm working on). -- 'Keep Aligned' option always resets to 'true' after desktop reload https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/399974 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 85291] Re: filesystems are never fsck'ed if they live on removable USB disks
@loke: surely everyone cares about a healthy file system, but the problem is thorny. I see several blueprints to handle "ordinary" filesystem fsck -- such as moving the fsck to shutdown, disabling fsck on battery power, asking user if they want to schedule it, etc. None of the ones I found seems to include a use case involving external drives. @Andres Mujica: I just looked at the status of the PartitionManagement spec and blueprint, and it has been marked as "superseded." Its use cases also didn't include fsck on an external drive, so I think another blueprint and spec needs to be created to handle this use case. I just did a few searches on blueprints, and there was a lot of work (in the Gutsy era) on handling a full filesystem situation, though from my reading this apparently involved a full root filesystem. It was also focused on making the system usable enough to recover from the full filesystem situation on boot -- not a full filesystem being mounted on an already active system. What does modern Gnome do or say when you fill an external USB drive? Does it put up a warning bubble? I believe it doesn't but I haven't tried yet in Karmic. A process that watches for a full filesystem might also watch for other important notices regarding filesystems. I think someone proposed some dbus messages getting created to handle filesystem fsck situations, and that would definitely be a place to look at. I have an old PowerBook running Ubuntu 6.06.1 Dapper PowerPC running XFCE and it pops up a warning whenever I mount a filesystem having less than 10% free space. I haven't tried a damaged system that needs a fsck. BUT I believe the full warning is an option in the file manager, or maybe I activated a daemon for that. I don't remember -- I installed that system a long time ago. ;-) -- filesystems are never fsck'ed if they live on removable USB disks https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/85291 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-volume-manager in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 399974] Re: 'Keep Aligned' option always resets to 'true' after desktop reload
+1 on the 'Keep Aligned' problem on Karmic 64bit, just to keep the list long ;) One thing I noticed: it DOESN'T rearrange the icons if I press F5, it just rechecks that option. Neither does relogging change the icons arrangement on the Desktop. - login, uncheck 'Keep Aligned' - arrange icons the way I want to - press F5, option 'Keep Aligned' gets checked BUT icons stay in place - uncheck option again, I can arrange the icons again the way I want, no restrictions - logout/login, option is checked, but icons still remain the way I left them ONLY when I actually CHECK the 'Keep Aligned' option, only then are the icons arranged. To further complicate things: - after checking the option, icons get rearranged (they are aligned) - unchecking AND pressing F5 brings the icons back to their original position (not arranged) Maybe it's just me, or is this not THAT annoying as people say ? Just uncheck the box arrange stuff how you want it, the forget about being checked or not. Next time you have to arrange something, just uncheck the option. [Bug 503855] Re: Make gdm depend on gnome-session
Tried it again: Instructed synaptic to completely remove gnome-session, - and restarted the computer. The result was again, that gdm hung itselves up as soon as i clicked on my username, so the problem is reproducible at least on my computer. ps -x |grep gdm reported while gdm was hanging: {{{ 1514 tty1 S+ 0:00 /usr/sbin/gdm-binary 1583 tty1 S+ 0:00 /usr/lib/gdm/gdm-simple-slave --display-id /org/gnome/DisplayManager/Display1 1585 tty7 Ss+0:00 /usr/bin/X :0 -br -verbose -auth /var/run/gdm/auth-for-gdm-18EJcG/database -nolisten tcp vt7 1624 tty1 S+ 0:00 /usr/lib/gdm/gdm-session-worker 1865 tty4 S+ 0:00 grep gdm }}} restarted gdm, but this time didn't klick on my username but only kill gdm and saved all logfiles this produced. Will attach them to this comment as soon as I find out how. -- Make gdm depend on gnome-session https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/503855 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 503298] Re: insufficient zoom (pdf are not zoomed properly)
yes i was using my 32-inch 1360x768 Sony Bravia TV as my monitor for display as my 19-inch Viewsonic 1440x900 screen had gone for repairs. now i am using my 19-inch screen and all is fine. i suppose it was the fault of using the TV as a computer monitor. I do understand that pdfs are print formats, i.e. they are rendered exactly the way they are to be printed. a pdf rendered @100% zoom on my 19-inch screen is more or less (+/- 0.2 inches height and width) same size as the printed document (8.5x11inches). but @100% on my 32-inch TV results only a 'page' 2x4inches ** Changed in: evince (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => In Progress ** Changed in: evince (Ubuntu) Status: In Progress => Invalid ** Changed in: evince (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid => In Progress -- insufficient zoom (pdf are not zoomed properly) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/503298 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Please try to obtain a backtrace of that hang following the instructions at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash and upload the backtrace (as an attachment) to the bug report. [Bug 428884] Re: gnome-screensaver-command --poke no longer inhibits screensaver
It's been working for me in VLC. This may be a stupid comment, but if you are checking "Stop XScreenSaver" in Mplayer, why would you expect it to stop gnome- screensaver? Example email is attached. It may have something to do with the fact that this sender uses Outlook and MS's proprietary RTF instead of HTML. ** Attachment added: "example_email.txt" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/37622759/example_email.txt -- Received column in inbox shows "?" for some messages https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/485014 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
