[Bug 517952] Re: MP3 player no longer visible after update

2010-02-09 Thread asharpham
After running Terminal with the instructions you gave, I ran Rhythmbox
with the Creative Zen MP3 player attached. It was not found by
Rhythmbox. Prior to updating Rhythmbox, I was able to see the player
listed on the left hand side and its contents, although i wasn't able to
play any of the items listed. Now the player doesn't even show up in the
list.

Regarding the "rhythmbox-debug" instruction, it was running for about 45
mins before I decided enough log had been created. It didn't look like
it was ever going to finish so I closed it down. If you want me to run
it again and just leave it running I will but perhaps you could tell me
how long it is likely to run.

The 2 log files are attached.

Thanks,
Alan

P.S It appears only one attachment can be made at a time so I'll resedn
the report with the other log file in a moment.

[Bug 519651] Re: The keys controling the volume, eco-mode ... freez ubuntu 9.10 64bit

2010-02-09 Thread Mitch Towner
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This bug had the incorrect package associated with it,
which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper
developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have re-classified
this bug as a bug in gnome-settings-daemon.

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the
appropriate application's "Help -> Report a Problem" menu or using
'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more
about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

RE: [Bug 519428] Re: Gnometris responds very slowly

Hi Benedict,

The system monitor displays using hardly any resources.
When any other applications opened at the same time work and respond
immediately.
I tried permutations like background and brick pattern but the result is still
the same.

INFO Feb 09 21:22:20 [22430]: No proxy for www.discogs.com

At first I thought it was a Rhythombox streaming music from my windows
machine in the basement, but it continued to affect my web browsing even
with local songs. But only certain songs does it seem to do it on.
Like I said where discogs doesn't seem to have any results.

So far disabling that plugin has resolved this issue. So it's not a
high priority bug in my mind, but thought I would pass it along.

[Bug 517310] Re: rhythmbox crashes when changing volume level

2010-02-09 Thread CraigH
Additional information on rhythmbox startup problem, and volume crash
results. After system reset, first attempt to startup rhythmbox from
gnome applications menu (or desktop launcher) blinks program box in
bottom status line, then installs icon in gnome's upper right action
bar. Actual program window does not appear. The second attempt to
startup rhythmbox does open program window, and program works normally.

"When changing volume and the crash/exit occurs, the icon in the action
bar is removed." Volume change crash occurs even when using just the
mouse wheel, and not the volume slider.

When trying to launch rhythmbox from command line after a system reset,
the assert errors occur, and the icon is installed in the gnome action
bar. Actual program window does not appear. Using ctrl-c removes icon
from action bar. If rhythmbox is launched as a background task, assert
errors occur, icon is installed in action bar, and ctrl-c does not
remove icon. Additional attempts to start rhythmbox from command line
will work correctly, as long a icon is in action bar. Closing rhythmbox
program window does not remove icon from action bar, even if no songs
are being played.

[Bug 518840] Re: not returning to the previous song

2010-02-09 Thread Draycen DeCator
Thank you for replying and clarifying the bug you are experiencing. I
had previously thought that the "Previous Song" button was simply
restarting the song, but you are saying that it does nothing after 4
seconds? If that is true, then this is indeed a bug. Can you please
confirm if I am understanding you right? If that is the problem you are
experiencing, can you please let us know if going to 'Control' ->
'Previous' works correctly or not?

We understand that not all Ubuntu users are native English speakers, so
we really appreciate your effort in filing this report in English. If
you would like us to use an auto-translator and include a Spanish
version of what we say, please let us know!

[Bug 517310] Re: rhythmbox crashes when changing volume level

2010-02-09 Thread CraigH
Problem with startup of rhythmbox appears to occur only immediately
after a system reset, or volume crash condition. Once rhythmbox has been
started up in gnome (on second attempt), then closed normally, assert
error does not occur when starting from command line, and program can be
started and exited multiple times without problems. Attached is the
backtrace to document the volume crash condition. In this, gdb indicates
that the program exited normally. Reproduced this several times. May not
be an actual crash, but a mistaken interpretation that the exit box had
been clicked, since the volume slider overlays the exit box. In
additional tests, was careful to limit volume slider motions to area
below exit box, and was still able to cause crash/exit. Is there any
more investigations that you would like me to perform?

Thanks for working on this. I have one minor comment though - after
running autoreconf, please clean the autom4te.cache folder, as it isn't
needed and makes the patch quite large. I've done this now, and pushed

[Bug 517310] Re: rhythmbox crashes when changing volume level

2010-02-09 Thread CraigH
I agree that it may be the same as Bug #455421. Here is some additional
information. In trying to generate the manual backtrace, I get assert
errors whenever launching rhythmbox from the command line. The program
then hangs, and I must use ctrl-c to recover. The backtrace showing this
result is attached. With this behavior from the command line, cannot
generate backtrace of original bug. I am running a clean install of 9.10
x64 on ext4, and can still generate the crash when starting rhythmbox
from the gnome applications menu. However, I now have to start the
program twice to get it to run. The first time, a program box briefly
appears in the bottom status line, and then disappears. The second time,
it starts up and runs fine, until the volume crash associated with this
bug. To get the crash to occur, sometimes I must continuously change the
volume rapidly for several seconds, using the slider, before the crash
occurs. Other times, I just have to barely touch the volume control.

Yes and no... epiphany does not offer to save the password anymore (even

A workaround is not a fix ;)
And to fix all the Applications, that do not handle the clipboard the
way the specification from FreeDesktop proposes, seems not to be trivial.

Maybe we need another project like "The Great Clipboard Fixing Galore

[Bug 160862] Re: users-admin (System->Administration->Users and Groups) overwrites group file

2010-02-09 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Thanks for that very valuable information. It may still worth give a
deeper look at this, since it seems to hurt people at random, and can
still raise issues in Lucid (even if that doesn't destroy your system as
now).

So what happens is that the backends have a problem creating group
structures that should be sent over D-Bus, which explains the warning
"number of values does not match type at
/usr/lib/perl5/Net/DBus/Binding/Iterator.pm line 606". Unfortunately,
this line is not where the problem happens, but where the D-Bus perl
binding detects it, and it must come from the function
GroupsConfig.pm::get(). The liboobs warnings are simply the consequence:
empty groups are sent, which explains why we remove all of them (or
almost) when committing changes.

I don't know if you know a little about perl, but you can try to get more
informations by editing your
/usr/share/system-tools-backends-2.0/scripts/GroupsConfig.pm. There's a
function called get() there, in which it would be interesting to print to debug
output all the informations that were retrieved from /etc/group. For example,
you can add to the start of the while loop something like:
&Utils::File::run ("echo Group:");
and at the end of the loop:
&Utils::File::run ("echo " . join(" ", @line));
&Utils::File::run ("echo $copy");

Then, reproducing the debugging steps, you'll be able to see what's
going on in the log.

[Bug 519529] [NEW] gnome-display-properties can't change resolution after full-screen app crash

2010-02-09 Thread jhansonxi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

This is a problem that goes back to 8.04 (Hardy Heron) and probably
earlier. If a full-screen application changes resolution and later
crashes (or hangs and is killed by the user), the screen is not restored
and g-d-p can't seem to change it. For example, I just had a DarkPlaces
(enhanced Quake engine) game hang on exit on Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala).
The game was set to 1024x768 while the normal desktop resolution is
1280x1024. When I killed it from a VT, the screen was left at 1024x768.
When I attempted to change it back to 1280x1024 using g-d-p, it accepted
the change but nothing happened.

The solution (as always) is to use a terminal window and issue the command:
xrandr -s 1280x1024

I'm don't know if the problem is with g-d-p not making the change
request or the daemon not applying it. The logs don't show anything.
This occurs with my new Radeon HD 4770 [RV740] using fglrx and my old
Nvidia GeForce 7300 and I've encountered it on many different systems
I've built both x86 and x86_64.

For some reason, this stopped happening for me in the last few weeks.
I'm not sure if there was an update that fixed this, or if it is just a
coincidence, but I used to have this problem on nearly every boot.

[Bug 518533] Re: Unable to mount location Not Authorized after nautilus upgrade

2010-02-09 Thread David Gradwell
The work-around is to mount at boot time, i.e. add suitable lines to the
end of /etc/fstab such as:

/dev/sdc1/media/FreeAgent ntfsdefaults 02
/dev/sdb1/media/t1backup ext4 defaults 02

Then both problem disks are accessible even when working over a remote
vnc connection.

WISHLIST - it turns out this is not a problem, even a bug marked just
"Wishlist" will be worked on in case as this one (lots of duplicates and

According to guys at IRC ##ubuntu-bugs @ irc.freenet.org

Btw, and despite "epic fail" being removed from description, ubuntu devels also
say that

[Bug 519504] [NEW] rapid cycling during start up

2010-02-09 Thread puzzler995
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I have Lucid Lynx Alpha 2 and, my visuals had crashed when I started the
game Adanaxis, so I force-restarted my computer with the power button.
When I restarted GNOME there was a LOT of of programs rapidly cycling on
the bottom bar. I moused over them and they all say "Starting File
Manager". When I opened System Monitor I noticed the process number for
Nautilus was also changing rapidly. I tried logging out and in several
times, logging into Failsafe GNOME, and killing nautilus, with no
effect. My desktop icons are all gone, along with the trash applet in
the bottom left corner. Apport crashes on opening, ubuntu-bug doesnt
work, nautilus doesn't even open, and on log out a box pops up, which I
have snapped a screenshot of and attached. Synaptic works, but Update
Manager doesn't. I have version 1:2.29.90-0ubuntu1 in Synaptic.

I have taped this and posted it on YouTube so you can see what I am
talking about http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Qh9jxbIymk

** Description changed:

- WORKAROUND
+ *** WORKAROUND ***
  ---
  Install klipper, glipper, or parcellite

- This -could- be the underlying cause of bug #7986.
- This is a general issue that seems to be independant of any individual
program.
- Pick any text field that supports copying, copy some text. Paste into any
other
- text field. It works. Close the source window or program. Paste now does
- nothing. The example I just verified this with is gedit to gedit. Also occurs
- with openoffice to gedit.
+ When I copy (Ctrl + C, or right click and "Copy") text from somewhere
+ and after that close the program where it is, the clipboard gets empty.
+
+ Steps to reproduce in gedit :
+ 1. Pick any text field that supports copying, copy some text.
+ 2. Paste into any other text field.
+ 3. It works.
+ 4. Close the source window or program.
+ 5. Paste now does nothing.
+
+ The example is with gedit to gedit. Also occurs with openoffice to gedit.

In some cases, like OpenOffice and Firefox, simply closing the source window
won't cause the problem. It only happens if the entire program is closed down.

- When I copy (Ctrl + C, or right click and "Copy") text from somewhere
- and after that close the program where it is, the clipboard gets empty.
-
This bug will happen in any application that doesn't comply with the
clipboard specification from FreeDesktop.
