I have changed the package to nautilus as this is a nautilus issue - this does not happen when using thunar. This issue only occurs the first time "Computer" is selected from the Places menu after login and only if the "Extra Pane" (F3) view is being used. [Bug 521590] [NEW] Laptop monitor won't sleep & screensaver not working
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager With the latest update for karmic, my laptop (sony vpcw115x) screen will not go to sleep after a specific period of time. I've tried the following combination of times and none of these will put screen to sleep: screensaver time > put screen to sleep time: "Session active, not inhibited, screen idle..." message will show in the notification area when screen sleep time reached and when screensaver time reached, the screen will turn dark, then return to normal(no screensaver) screensaver time == put screen to sleep time: The screen will turn dark, then return to normal (no screensaver) screensaver time < put screen to sleep time: When screensaver time reached, the screen will turn dark, then return to normal(no screensaver) and "Session active, not inhibited, screen idle..." message will show in the notification area when screen sleep time reached The problem does not exist on a fresh installed copy; it only appears after the updates. Tried the command "xset s [timeout]" the screen is able to sleep when screensaver is not set to be active or the time is longer than [timeout]; however, if the screensaver time is shorter than the [timeout] the screen will not sleep either. [Bug 521495] [NEW] display applet gets confused about the screen resolution
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-control-center My laptop has a 1280x800 screen. When I try to run an SDL game that wants to establish 1024x768 fullscreen mode, I see my desktop on the right and bottom, with the game in the top-left area (I should file this bug somewhere too, but I've got no idea where -- SDL? X server?). I then quit the game, use xrandr to select 1024x768 with "scaling mode" set to Aspect, and run the game. When the game quits, I restore my video mode to 1280x800 using either xrandr or gnome-display-properties. Now for the bug: every time I close and reopen the laptop lid, my desktop returns to 1024x768 instead of staying in 1280x800. I can press Fn-F7 to get the system to autoconfigure, which fixes things, but I have to do that every time after closing and reopening the lid (which also implies every time after resuming). [Bug 504440] Re: sd card "safely remove drive" kills reader device
I cannot see a regression here: In up-to-date Jaunty (supported updates, at least), the "safely remove" option that I see in desktop and nautilus sidebar is actually called "Unmount" and it does the same as Unmount does in Karmic: it unmounts the filesystem. Unmounting the filesystem does not prevent raw blockdevice access (e.g., fdisk or dd), as opposed to Eject and Safely Remove, which actually turn off all access to the media. Therefore, these options are safer that unmounting (although calling these before a dd has ended will kill dd and could corrupt the data in any case). In addition, "safely remove" shutdowns the device so that it has to be reconnected to use it again (as computx notes, it is not a question of modules or services that could be reloaded without physical reboot AFAIK). This avoids electric transients, which could eventually damage the microchips (even those designed for hotplug). Despite the fact that this is not a very common issue, it is a progress that Ubuntu is implementing this, that they do "more" than unmounting. -- sd card "safely remove drive" kills reader device https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/504440 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gvfs in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description didn't include enough information. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem. We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures. At a minimum, we need: 1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem, 2. the behavior you expected, and 3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible). FYI In the previous version 9.04. "Safely remove" worked correctly and didn't kill the internal reader. I discovered that unmount and eject do work correctly in 9.10 as others have mentioned but to those who are used to using usb in windows, safely remove seems like the obvious choice. I believe all safely remove needs to do is unmount the device regardless of its nature. So I don't understand why it tries to do more.
