[Bug 381066] Re: Add option to display HTML mail in evolution

2010-03-14 Thread Jack Senechal
If I understand the last alternative part of this request, it is the
same as the Prefer PLAIN option under the HTML Messages tab in Mail
Preferences (I'm on Evolution version 2.28.1, Ubuntu 9.10). I currently
use that option and am happy with it, but I still find myself wishing
frequently to view the HTML version of certain messages. It would be
very nice to have the option to switch display formats on the fly, as in
the KMail button. The current flow looks like:

1. Click View menu
2. Click Preferences
3. Click Mail Preferences
4. Click HTML Messages
5. Change from Prefer PLAIN to Show HTML if present
6. Close preferences window
7. Switch to a different message and back again, to update message display
format
8. Repeat 1-5 to turn options back to Prefer PLAIN

Which is a rather long way around.

[Bug 537596] Re: [regression] Unable to shut down, login screen keeps coming up

2010-03-14 Thread Otto Kekäläinen
I don't think this is a duplicate. Even though the main symptoms are the
same, this bug was introduced newly by some update in Lucid after the
alpha release. Also the other bug report is about GDM, which has since
been completely rewritten.

After investigateing this some more, I noticed that when the system is in the
broken state, the attributes of some devices are different. Listing of ls -la
/dev/dvb/adapter0/ in normal state:
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 140 2010-03-14 08:20 .
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 60 2010-03-14 08:20 ..
crw-rw+ 1 root video 212, 4 2010-03-14 08:20 ca0
crw-rw+ 1 root video 212, 0 2010-03-14 08:20 demux0

crw-rw+ 1 root video 212, 2 2010-03-14 08:20 net0

Listing in broken state:
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 140 2010-03-13 14:38 .
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 60 2010-03-13 14:38 ..
crw-rw 1 root video 212, 4 2010-03-13 14:38 ca0
crw-rw 1 root video 212, 0 2010-03-13 14:38 demux0
crw-rw 1 root video 212, 1 2010-03-13 14:38 dvr0
crw-rw 1 root video 212, 3 2010-03-13 14:38 frontend0
crw-rw 1 root video 212, 2 2010-03-13 14:38 net0

The plus sign is missing. According to info coreutils 'ls invocation':

A file with any other combination of alternate access methods is
 marked with a `+' character.

Maybe the bug is related to something in policykit or apparmor?

I would add that for some tasks it is easier to use the text bar (you
can copy a long address in it) and for some the button bar (when
searching through sub-folders of one folder). Switching the bars via
gconf-editor is not enough flexible, but rather annoying.

I wonder, why for some people a decision that one option will be the
default automatically means that switching to other options is probably
not needed. Similar scheme applies to tabs at bottom (now back on top) -
this should be rather an option in Preferences of Nautilus.

[Bug 528830] Re: Must log in twice to gdm in Lucid

2010-03-14 Thread Peter M. Clausen
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 532047 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532047

I have the same problem on a dell laptop Latitude D505 and Ubuntu Lucid 10.04
32-bit
$ uname -a
 Linux clausen-laptop 2.6.32-16-generic #25-Ubuntu SMP Tue Mar 9 16:33:52 UTC
2010 i686 GNU/Linux

I am not certain, but I think that kernel 2.6.32-15 did NOT have this
problem.

For me it only happens on login. By software installation and so on I
only enter passphrase once.

[Bug 538698] [NEW] About Me Instant Messaging options should be updated

2010-03-14 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Sorry team, not sure what package About Me is in - I had a look and
asked around but couldn't find any information.

Basically at the moment the options for Instant Messaging are:

Jabber
Yahoo
MSN
AIM/iChat
ICQ
Groupwise

I think that we could probably quite safely remove Groupwise and Jabber
and replace them with Facebook and Skype?

I tried to look up some hard statistics on IM protocols, but all I found
was the information on this page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instant_messaging#User_base

No stats on Jabber or Groupwise... I believe they are the least-used out
of the above. Facebook and Skype on the other hand have the most users
in the world so it would make sense to include them in the list of
protocols :)

Even Google Talk might be a good one to add too.

Thanks!

[Bug 74008] Re: Include the window border doesn't work by default (with compiz)

2010-03-14 Thread Martin Olsson
ebassi posted some interesting info on the upstream GNOME bug now; about
both GTK client side decorations (nice but won't completely solve this
problem for all apps though) and also that upstream compiz have
transitioned to reparenting of the window inside a frame which will
probably solve this bug.

I wonder if the upstream compiz commit can be backported to Lucid? I don't even
know if it's a single commit though or which commit/branch it is; if someone
could find it that would be really nice. I suppose it's hiding somewhere in
here:

HI malev, I aggree that if you use Jaunty a Ubuntu CD should be detected
as upgradeable media, but if you use a live cd or installed lucid, the
media of the same version shouldn't be detected as upgradeable.

I'll have to doublecheck whether the latest build still does, but I'm

Ho can you use the installation CD of a fresh installed system to

[Bug 533758] Re: Button order/position should be part of Theme

2010-03-14 Thread Dave Gilbert
Looking at the metacity source I don't think it currently has the ability to
pull this from theme rather than gconf, but it doesn't
look that hard.

meta_frames_paint_to_drawable calls meta_prefs_get_button_layout
but it doesn't look that hard to add another string to the theme definition and
I guess you would then substitute
that call in meta_frames_paint_to_drawable

The problem is all the ancillary work in the changing the theme
chooser/overrides.

An interesting question is when should something be part of a theme and
when should it be a pref.

[Bug 497430] [NEW] Does not let me log in after running Updates

2010-03-14 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Ubuntu 9.10 - the Karmic Koala - released in October 2009

20091215:
I recently installed 9.1 (desktop) and today ran the updates. It installed fine
... I got prompted for a restart. System restarted but did not auto-login
(thats how I had it setup).

It appears to attempt the auto login but fails and prompts me to login.
(which also fails). My login credentials are correct because if I enter
a invalid password it states authentication failed but not so with the
correct password. It simply returns to the login after a couple of
screen flashes now I'm locked out without a way in!!!

20091216 Update:
I did finally reinstall and ran updates again. There is definitely a bug with
the updates which causes the login to fail for the primary user. Again as
before I set myself up to login automatically. Login to this account fails
consistently (as before)

What I did do this time was before I ran UPDATES I created 2 other
logins. #1 Admin (ROOT Group) and #2 another user with the same
privileges as my initial login. Here's what I found

   1. When the login fails on the default account (created on installation) I
can login as root (my Admin ac) then switch user and login with the account
that is failing, successfully!
   2. In the same situation I am able to login with the 2nd user account but
when I switch user and attempt to login to the default account, login fails and
this time prompts me to enter the 2nd users password as if I attempted to
switch to this user.

[Bug 399974] Re: 'Keep Aligned' option always resets to 'true' after desktop reload

2010-03-14 Thread diver
This bug is affecting me as well on 10.4 Lucid Lynx LTS. Both methods to
toggle desktop icon alignment switch back to auto alignment. Right
clicking on the desktop to toggle Keep Aligned radio button resets upon
reboot or GDM logout/login. Gconf-editor says that the key 'nautilus-
icon-view-keep-aligned' in '/apps/nautilus/desktop-metadata/directory'
has no schema. The key's value can be edited by double clicking on key
value, but double clicking on the actual key to edit the key has 'Edit
Key' box grayed out.

I think this bug has to do with access control and authorization,
something prevents the system to persist across reboots and logouts, and
it is most likely access control scheme...

[Bug 537887] Re: gdm greeter doesn't fit in 1024 anymore

2010-03-14 Thread Ralf Nieuwenhuijsen
Please apply the patch from SUSE found in the gnome-bug report.
When, (and if ever) they fix it more properly, we can always revert to that
solution.

For now, it needs to be either patched, or ubuntu should stop officially
supporting 1024 and therefor netbooks.
Being able to select a language or sessions seems very core usability to me.

So +1 for just applying the SUSE patch.
They were right about needing a quick workaround. The current state is
unreleasable and it's the first impression people will have.

Chris, do you have to the right to apply that patch? Or should I upload
the same patch here, so it's gets flagged as low-hanging-fruit?

[Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close

2010-03-14 Thread Matthias Klumpp
I dont't think the new button order is a good choice, it's the worst think the
dx team could do cause of the things named above.
But I would understand if Canonical wouldn't change the buttons back, as the
company sponsoring Ubuntu Canonical has every right to do so.
But there is one thing I really hate: The community ASKED Canonical to change
the layout back, but they did not even COMMENT on the change. No member of the
teams responsible for this change have commented on the bug report.
This is really disappointing. This behavior looks like Canonical does not care
about the community, they do not even want to explain the changes they did.

Would someone of the dx-team be so nice to explain why the change was
made and if there is a chance to change it back for the LTS?

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would

1) I set up the put display to sleep when inactive to 1 minute.
2) Leave the desktop idle with the programs (I'm using) open (firefox, pidgin,
hgtk, gnome-terminal, etc): it takes 3:34min to turn off display.
3) Leave a cpu-intensive task running (make clean; make a project) and repeat
step 2: it takes 3:47min to turn off display. (task took about 1:30min to

[Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to menu:minimize, maximize, close

It's taken two years and 116 comments here
(https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/metacity/+bug/160311) to make
absolutely no progress whatsoever. I doubt we'll be seeing this LTS
with buttons on the right. Maybe the next LTS.

General usability in Ubuntu is pretty low and I think it's down to a
complete lack of usability studies. If they /are/ performed, they're
being done so privately and the results are remaining private. Until we
can see the results of such a study, all we have is one person's
opinions against another. And it sounds a lot like Mark's made up his
mind on this one - given his comments and participation in this thread
and the suspicious timing of this change (on the day of the UI freeze).

[Bug 538761] [NEW] please play volume change sound effect (audio-volume-change) when volume is changed, like upstream

2010-03-14 Thread Dylan McCall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

First of all, a quick introduction to the (unfortunately not very well-
known) component we have had for a few releases now, called libCanberra,
which is used for sound events in the same style as icons.

In upstream's gnome-settings-daemon, the system tries to play the audio-
volume-change sound effect when the user adjusts the volume with media
control keys.

Granted, the sound is unimplemented in Ubuntu's default sound theme, but it
absolutely exists in others. With the Freedesktop theme, the sound effect is an
extremely helpful pop noise that indicates what the new volume is.
Although it only affects users with different sound themes, losing this feature
is a regression. It also limits what can be done with Ubuntu's own sound theme,
if that gets updated at some point.

Here is how the sound is played in gnome-settings-daemon
./plugins/media-keys/gsd-media-keys-manager.c in the update_dialog function:

ca_gtk_play_for_widget (manager-priv-dialog, 0,
CA_PROP_EVENT_ID, audio-volume-change,
CA_PROP_EVENT_DESCRIPTION, volume changed through key press,
CA_PROP_APPLICATION_ID, org.gnome.VolumeControl,
NULL);

With our patch to gnome-settings-daemon to use libnotify for this event,
update_dialog is never called. This is what causes our rather unfortunate
regression.

Please implement this feature for when a volume change is triggered in
the libnotify-using version of gnome-settings-daemon.

[Bug 538764] [NEW] gvfsd-(sftp/ftp) hang on 100%CPU if they try to read password from gnome-keyring

2010-03-14 Thread axoin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

ubuntu 10.04 alpha fully updated.Aditionally tested in testdrive with daily
iso, same results.
Version gvfs-1.5.5-0ubuntu1

If you try to connect to a sftp / ftp share via a password the gvfsd-(sftp/ftp)
process hangs without results at 90-100%.
This only happens if you have been connected to the share before and the
password is stored in the gnome-keyring. (View with seahorse).

Steps to reproduce:
1) Connect to a server (you haven't connected before) and select forget
password immediatly. The share will be mounted successfully.
Disconnect from the server.
2) Connect to a server and select store password forever. The share won't be

We have now the units policy [1] in place and
g_format_size_for_display() is fixed to comply with it. The attached
patch will make gnome-system-monitor to use g_format_size_for_display().

There are some remaining issues:

[Bug 382626] Re: Nautilus location bar toggle icon implies unrelated function

2010-03-14 Thread Oliver Joos
Improved in Lucid? As far as I see the icon has been removed altogether
in 2.29.92.1. I like the new layout, but I'd have preferred an option to
enable this icon again.

Without the icon more users will overlook this feature, and use the
mouse to navigate. The Location mode is nice to copy-paste parts of a
path to and from Nautilus.

[Bug 538783] [NEW] Ubuntu's change to g_format_size_for_display() causes inconsistency

2010-03-14 Thread charles
Public bug reported:

This is in reference to
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=554172#c32

Since this violates the recently instated units policy in Ubuntu
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UnitsPolicy) we applied this patch in Ubuntu to make
g_format_size_for_display() standards conformant (original patch by Benjamin
Drung, I adapted the test cases accordingly).

The obvious other alternative would be to keep the 1024 multiplicator, and fix
the units to be KiB, MiB, etc., but I'm strongly convinced that this would
 just
lead to more confusion (everything except RAM size is commonly written in
standard base-10 prefixes these days, after all).

The problem occurs when applications using g_format_size_for_display()
also allow user input of file sizes. For example, let's say an application
allows users to set the size of a disk cache. What units should the GUI
use when accepting user input?

Transmission's preferences dialog lets users specify speed limits in KiB/s.
If Transmission were to display speeds with g_format_size_for_display() + /s
as recommended by Benjamin Drung (the author of the g_format_size_for_display()
patch), Transmission will appear to end users to be exceeding the limit.

Conversely, if Transmission fully adopts Ubuntu's Unit Policy, its speeds
will be off in the other direction (never reaching the speed limit) on distros
using the upstream implementation of g_format_size_for_display().

In *both* cases, Transmission's input and display units will be inconsistent
with one another on at least one platform. Every application in this situation
would need to pass test input to g_format_size_for_display() in order to see
if it's the base 2 or base 10 version, and then tailor its input dialogs
accordingly,
as well as massaging sizes and speeds entered by the user.

In short, this change was introduced to make things more consistent and
intuitive, but has unintended side-effects that do the exact opposite.
It's likely that g_format_size_for_display() *should* be base 10, but
doing it downlstream as Ubuntu has done puts application developers
in a tough situation.

The bug was reproducible at the time - I don't know if it's still
present since I don't own that laptop and now don't have the same setup
anymore (autologon could have been a contributing factor) - I still
don't think that's the way to get rid of bugs.

[Bug 538783] Re: Ubuntu's change to g_format_size_for_display() causes inconsistency

2010-03-14 Thread charles
According to the units policy, user inputs of file sizes should be in
base-10, too (or give the user an option for the preferred prefix).

I already addressed this in paragraph three. If Transmission fully
adopts Ubuntu's Unit Policy, its speeds will be off in the other
direction (never reaching the speed limit) on distros using the upstream
implementation of g_format_size_for_display().

In short, this change forces Transmission to decide whether it wants to
be consistent with upstream or with Ubuntu. My preference would be for
Transmission to integrate on all platforms, so this is a suboptimal
choice caused by Ubuntu's fork of g_format_size_for_display().

[Bug 538783] Re: Ubuntu's change to g_format_size_for_display() causes inconsistency

2010-03-14 Thread Benjamin Drung
Now I am aware of the full problem. In my opinion you should work
internally with bytes, assume upstream's implementation of
g_format_size_for_display(), and use helper functions for conversion.
