[Bug 610358] Re: Full disk prevents from starting a graphical session (and Ubuntu does not warn)
** Description changed: Binary package hint: gnome-disk-utility How to reproduce : - start long operations filling disk space, for example big downloads or DVD rip, etc.. - Ubuntu (gnome-disk-utility/gdu-notification-daemon) pop ups messages warning that the disk has few space left, and proposes to empty trash. Remark : if the user has left his computer he will not see all these messages. - when disk is full (less than ~10Mo, I did not check exactly), log out your session, or restart your computer Result : it is IMPOSSIBLE to start a graphical session (Gnome, KDE, Lubuntu, Openbox, Gnome backup session...), and there is no explanation about it in GDM. The only one working is the xterm session, which is not understandable by non-technical users. - What I propose : - - In a short term : warn the user (via gdu-notification-daemon pop-up windows for example) that "a full disk prevents from starting a graphical session" (or more generally "Ubuntu may not work properly if the disk is full or nearly full") + - In a short term : warn the user (via gdu-notification-daemon pop-up windows for example) that "Ubuntu may not work properly (impossible to start a graphical session... ) if the disk is full or nearly full". We can also add a "More information" button explaining the technical reason. - In a medium term : find a way (quotas?) to ensure that the users can always start a graphical session -- Full disk prevents from starting a graphical session (and Ubuntu does not warn) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/610358 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-disk-utility in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 625671] [NEW] Tray view shows steady about 2x to 3x more CPU load than a full view
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor 1. The trayed mini-view shows about 60%-75% overal processor load when mouse passes over the icon. Whereas the full view shows that both cores are less than 20% loaded. 2. [Bug 445084] Re: click-to-focus window is too sensitive
I can verify that the gnome-terminal is receiving MotionNotify events (which are presumably what make it select full lines when you click-to- focus past the end of text on a line). Tested as follows: In Assitive Technologies keyboard preferences, enable controlling the mouse from the keyboard (this doesn't effect the test if you hold the mouse steady). In one screen, launch xev from a terminal. Ensure the terminal (not xev) has focus, and move the cursor to the xev window. Here you can wait a few seconds to make it easier to identify the subsequent events by timestamp. Hit Numpad-5, giving xev focus. On a workstation where I see this problem, this is the sequence of events I see on clicking (some of them annotated with coordinates to show that the cursor is not moving - always the same location): EnterNotify root:(1942,65) KeymapNotify FocusIn KeymapNotify LeaveNotify root:(1942,65) ButtonPress root:(1942,65) EnterNotify root:(1942,65) KeymapNotify MotionNotify root:(1942,65) MotionNotify root:(1942,65) ButtonRelease root:(1942,65) LeaveNotify root:(1942,65) On a laptop that does not exhibit this problem, this is the sequence of events I see (note: no MotionNotify events; also tested without the keyboard-controlled mouse here): EnterNotify KeymapNotify ConfigureNotify FocusIn KeymapNotify ButtonPress EnterNotify KeymapNotify ButtonRelease LeaveNotify Both the problematic workstation and the working laptop are running 10.04 and both are using the "Ambiance" theme. The working laptop is using the "intel" driver, with no Xinerama, with "visual effects" set to "normal", and the problematic workstation has Xinerama enabled with the nvidia driver (/usr/lib/xorg/extra-modules/nvidia_drv.so), with "visual effects" set to "off". -- click-to-focus window is too sensitive https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/445084 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 382703] Re: "Home Folder" has 3 different names
+1 actual username (as in: the same name the folder actually has) Whenever I install ubuntu for a new user; they _always_ ask about this. So here is my reply: << Well, there is this folder, where you keep your files. It's name is your username. Every user has its folder like that, in a folder called 'home'. It's called something differently in a lot of situations. Personal files (dutch translation!) in this translated application. Home folder in this other non-translated application, eventhough it's not the same folder as 'home' You can best just try, and remember visually the places where you click and where they go. Expect no consistency. >> Here's a rule of thumb. No folder may have more than one name. I don't care what the folder is called by default. But it should be called the same thing: - when browsing in the /home folder in nautilus (as any user) - in the nautilus crumble bar - in the nautilus crumble bar, when on literal mode (control+L) - in search-dialogs - nautilus sidebar - nautilus go-menu - terminal commands - gtk-open dialogs - location-menu - non-native file dialogs (like Java apps & wine apps) So, how did this situation get so messy? Well, because appearantly, there are people out there, that believe that we should be managing the names of folders in language-packs. They apparently don't know what a filesystem does. Folders are complicated enough for people to begin with. And every application and place having a discussion about what their translation should be, isn't helping. This should be in the HIG: You may never, put a folder name in a translation-file. If you think other names are more 'usable', go argue to change the default name. But not in the application's language-packs. The file-system is quite capable of managing the actual name of the folder. For example, it would a smart idea to rename /media to /devices, so wouldn't need this fake 'this computer' folder. Try going a level up from a mount. It's doesn't even go back to this fake 'this computer' folder. It's so confusing. One file-hierarchy to rule them all, please. With one name per folder. Predictable, consistent. And yes, maybe the default folder names of things should be changed. But we should never put that change into applications or language-packs. -- "Home Folder" has 3 different names https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/382703 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 607497] Re: Nautilus has got terribly slow, eating up 400 MBs of RAM, after a partial upgrade
It looks like the problem is that Nautilus is version 2.31 (so Maverick version). It makes sense, cause it offered me a partial update. I think you'll get the same problem if u replace ur Nautilus with 2.31! But reinstalling replaces it with the same version. I would like to get back to 2.30, which is the intended one for Ubuntu 10.04. So, is it possible to temporarily remove Nautilus without consequences to install the old one? And, by the way, is it normal that the Update manager did a partial upgrade instead of a normal update? [Bug 625518] [NEW] Add a keyboard shortcut by default for take screenshot of a selection"
You have been subscribed to a public bug: See: http://kedarm.posterous.com/ubuntu-linux-adding-a-shortcut-to-take- screen I was looking for a keyboard combination to take screenshot of a specific selection. This is not available by default. We have Print (PrtScr) and Alt+Print (PrtScr) to mean either take the screenshot of an entire desktop or that of a Window currently in focus. Basically, I am asking for a keyboard shortcut that is equivalent of "Cmd+Shift+4" on a Mac that takes the screenshot (brings the crosswires to select an area) of a selection. [Bug 625324] Re: Selecting "Always on top" crashes Metacity
Ok... it is not theme specific. Sorry about the confusion. Now the crash happens and is very repeatable. Try logging out and logging back in. Launch terminal and try the "always on" option. It should crash. I got this enty in syslog.log Aug 27 14:27:52 M kernel: [ 358.939431] gtk-window-deco[2237] trap divide error ip:7fd655d87cde sp:7fffb156f040 error:0 in libglib-2.0.so.0.2514.0[7fd655d5a000+da000] -- Selecting "Always on top" crashes Metacity https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/625324 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to metacity in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
