[Bug 610358] Re: Full disk prevents from starting a graphical session (and Ubuntu does not warn)

2010-08-27 Thread YannUbuntu
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gnome-disk-utility

  How to reproduce :
  - start long operations filling disk space, for example big downloads or DVD
rip, etc..
  - Ubuntu (gnome-disk-utility/gdu-notification-daemon) pop ups messages
warning that the disk has few space left, and proposes to empty trash. Remark :
if the user has left his computer he will not see all these messages.
  - when disk is full (less than ~10Mo, I did not check exactly), log out your
session, or restart your computer

Result : it is IMPOSSIBLE to start a graphical session (Gnome, KDE, Lubuntu,
Openbox, Gnome backup session...), and there is no explanation about it in GDM.
The only one working is the xterm session, which is not understandable by
non-technical users.

-
  What I propose :
- - In a short term : warn the user (via gdu-notification-daemon pop-up windows
for example) that "a full disk prevents from starting a graphical session" (or
more generally "Ubuntu may not work properly if the disk is full or nearly
full")
+ - In a short term : warn the user (via gdu-notification-daemon pop-up windows
for example) that "Ubuntu may not work properly (impossible to start a
graphical session... ) if the disk is full or nearly full". We can also add a
"More information" button explaining the technical reason.
  - In a medium term : find a way (quotas?) to ensure that the users can always
start a graphical session

[Bug 623794] Re: evolution address book has quit unexpectedly

2010-08-27 Thread Deric Venra
Hi Pedro

I have run an update and upgrade this morning and tried again. The
evolution address book no longer segfaults and works as it should. I
will test over the next couple of days. If needed i can downgrade the
evolution to get the backtrace but as it is fixed now with the new
version being 2.30.2-1ubuntu2 I am unsure how to proceed.

Please advise.

Regards
Thank you for your help with this.

[Bug 625671] [NEW] Tray view shows steady about 2x to 3x more CPU load than a full view

2010-08-27 Thread vak
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor

1. The trayed mini-view shows about 60%-75% overal processor load when
mouse passes over the icon. Whereas the full view shows that both cores
are less than 20% loaded.

2. The back (dark blue) stripe in the Processor-window of the trayed
mini-view is almost always 50% or over and is higher than the front
(light-blue) stripe. I interpret the stripes as load graphs of my 2 CPU
Cores. If so, then it is again differs from the full view significantly,
because both CPUs are equally loaded according to the full view.

both issues are quite often to observe.

[Bug 625670] [NEW] Not all desktop items are themed

2010-08-27 Thread getut
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

After every reboot or logoff/logon or even a user switch, the selected
themes do not get applied to all desktop components. In my case, window
decorations, borders and window buttons are properly themed, but the top
and bottom panel and nautilus, desktop icons, and firefox buttons are
the default gnome theme.

I can get my theme to completely apply by finding gnome-settings-daemon
task and killing it, then running it again. The panels will be properly
themed then, but it seems nothing is getting nautilus, the desktop
icons, or firefox buttons to receive the theme. I am running the newest
Nvidia proprietary drivers offered to me by Maverick, 256.44.

[Bug 197288] Re: New windows are put in the background when a window has Always on Top set

2010-08-27 Thread Ogilvierothchild
I forgot to mention that it doesn't matter if the "always on top"
setting is used on any window.

The particular use case that I experience routinely is that when in a
terminal window, gnome-terminal or xterm, then web browser windows
(firefox, konqueror, google-chrome) always appear in the background.
These browsers are started from clicks on the top panel toolbar.

I did use Vi to manipulate the file, which itself creates a full,

would be nice if gedit had some provision to deal with "large" files.

[Bug 625634] [NEW] Input method is active when input password

2010-08-27 Thread Xhacker Liu
Public bug reported:

When I input password, if the input method is active before, it is still
active. And I should manually press 'shift' or 'ctrl + space', it really
annoy me.

I don't know if it's a GTK bug or iBus or something else. I'm attaching
a screenshot. Thanks.

[Bug 445084] Re: click-to-focus window is too sensitive

2010-08-27 Thread Alex Hioreanu
I can verify that the gnome-terminal is receiving MotionNotify events
(which are presumably what make it select full lines when you click-to-
focus past the end of text on a line).

Tested as follows:
In Assitive Technologies keyboard preferences, enable controlling the mouse
from the keyboard (this doesn't effect the test if you hold the mouse steady).
In one screen, launch xev from a terminal.
Ensure the terminal (not xev) has focus, and move the cursor to the xev window.
Here you can wait a few seconds to make it easier to identify the subsequent
events by timestamp.
Hit Numpad-5, giving xev focus.

On a workstation where I see this problem, this is the sequence of events I see
on clicking (some of them annotated with coordinates to show that the cursor is
not moving - always the same location):
EnterNotify root:(1942,65) KeymapNotify FocusIn KeymapNotify LeaveNotify
root:(1942,65) ButtonPress root:(1942,65) EnterNotify root:(1942,65)
KeymapNotify MotionNotify root:(1942,65) MotionNotify root:(1942,65)
ButtonRelease root:(1942,65)
LeaveNotify root:(1942,65)

On a laptop that does not exhibit this problem, this is the sequence of events
I see (note: no MotionNotify events; also tested without the
keyboard-controlled mouse here):
EnterNotify KeymapNotify ConfigureNotify FocusIn KeymapNotify ButtonPress
EnterNotify KeymapNotify ButtonRelease LeaveNotify

Both the problematic workstation and the working laptop are running
10.04 and both are using the "Ambiance" theme. The working laptop is
using the "intel" driver, with no Xinerama, with "visual effects" set to
"normal", and the problematic workstation has Xinerama enabled with the
nvidia driver (/usr/lib/xorg/extra-modules/nvidia_drv.so), with "visual
effects" set to "off".

[Bug 382703] Re: "Home Folder" has 3 different names

2010-08-27 Thread Ralf Nieuwenhuijsen
+1 actual username (as in: the same name the folder actually has)

Whenever I install ubuntu for a new user; they _always_ ask about this.
So here is my reply:

<<

Well, there is this folder, where you keep your files.
It's name is your username. Every user has its folder like that, in a
folder called 'home'.

It's called something differently in a lot of situations.
Personal files (dutch translation!) in this translated application.
Home folder in this other non-translated application, eventhough it's
not the same folder as 'home'

You can best just try, and remember visually the places where you click
and where they go.
   Expect no consistency.

>>

Here's a rule of thumb.
No folder may have more than one name.

I don't care what the folder is called by default.
But it should be called the same thing:

  - when browsing in the /home folder in nautilus (as any user)
  - in the nautilus crumble bar
  - in the nautilus crumble bar, when on literal mode (control+L)
  - in search-dialogs
  - nautilus sidebar
  - nautilus go-menu
  - terminal commands
  - gtk-open dialogs
  - location-menu
  - non-native file dialogs (like Java apps & wine apps)

So, how did this situation get so messy?
Well, because appearantly, there are people out there, that believe that we
should be managing the names of folders in language-packs. They apparently
don't know what a filesystem does.

Folders are complicated enough for people to begin with.
And every application and place having a discussion about what their
translation should be, isn't helping.

This should be in the HIG: You may never, put a folder name in a
translation-file.
If you think other names are more 'usable', go argue to change the default name.
But not in the application's language-packs. The file-system is quite capable
of managing the actual name of the folder.

For example, it would a smart idea to rename /media to /devices, so wouldn't
need this fake 'this computer' folder.
Try going a level up from a mount. It's doesn't even go back to this fake 'this
computer' folder.

It's so confusing. One file-hierarchy to rule them all, please.
With one name per folder. Predictable, consistent.

And yes, maybe the default folder names of things should be changed.
But we should never put that change into applications or language-packs.

[Bug 607497] Re: Nautilus has got terribly slow, eating up 400 MBs of RAM, after a partial upgrade

2010-08-27 Thread zsolt . ruszinyák
It looks like the problem is that Nautilus is version 2.31 (so Maverick
version). It makes sense, cause it offered me a partial update. I think
you'll get the same problem if u replace ur Nautilus with 2.31! But
reinstalling replaces it with the same version. I would like to get back
to 2.30, which is the intended one for Ubuntu 10.04. So, is it possible
to temporarily remove Nautilus without consequences to install the old
one?

And, by the way, is it normal that the Update manager did a partial
upgrade instead of a normal update? I have looked through my PPA sources
and there's none I could blame for this.

That's all right. Indeed I din't scrutinize every place after having

[Bug 625569] [NEW] Double clicking a newly created folder changes path to "untitled folder" rather than the folder's name

2010-08-27 Thread Scott Ritchie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

On Lucid, open a nautilus window, right click -> create folder. The
name is highlighted and you can type letters to rename it.

Before hitting enter (while the text is still highlighted), double click
the folder. Nautilus will show you as in "untitled folder" rather than
what the new name of the folder was. If you hit back the folder will be
renamed, and if you hit forward again you'll receive an error message
about untitled folder not existing.

[Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult

2010-08-27 Thread Garden Brooks
agree with Scaine (on 2007-11-13: #2): "Resizing windows is
cumbersome, frustrating and far too easy to get wrong."

For me, a border/corner click will show the resize icon, then many times
stop that operation and switch focus to the window underneath--very
annoying. :( It's as if the resize operation has a loose screw.

I don't know GTK, but, from an xlib POV, I imagine one place to look
would be in the routine(s) that call XGrabPointer() and perhaps change
the "owner_events" argument to False...my 2-cent shot-in-the-dark FWIW.

[Bug 439783] Re: Regression: devicekit-power does not display remaining battery time

2010-08-27 Thread Santiago.Batista
Hey everyone, I am not a Linux expert and like many of you I have had
this problem since 9.10 (I use a HP pavilion as many of you do, now
10.04, amd64),and I could not get my battery applet to show the
remaining/charge time.

Today I was trying out cairo-dock, and for my surprise it DID show the
time remaining (and charging time as well). I don't know if it
calculates the time remaining by its own method or if it gets this
information in the same way as the regular battery applet does.

Anyhow, I hope this works also for you... You will get the time
remaining until somebody can fix this bug. And if you know a little more
on how this actually works, maybe it could be a hint for solving it.

Cheers to everyone

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does
not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you
are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are
having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if
you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see

[Bug 625538] [NEW] Desktop closes when try to insert password after automatic login

2010-08-27 Thread Facundo Batista
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

I have "automatic login" configured, so after reboot, it just enters and
I can start working without any password.

Some processes I fire need to use the keyring, so the first time one of
those needs to access it, I need to insert the password.

everything closes and it goes to the gdm screen where I can choose user,

[Bug 625518] [NEW] Add a keyboard shortcut by default for take screenshot of a selection"

2010-08-27 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

See: http://kedarm.posterous.com/ubuntu-linux-adding-a-shortcut-to-take-
screen

I was looking for a keyboard combination to take screenshot of a
specific selection. This is not available by default. We have Print
(PrtScr) and Alt+Print (PrtScr) to mean either take the screenshot of an
entire desktop or that of a Window currently in focus.

Basically, I am asking for a keyboard shortcut that is equivalent of
"Cmd+Shift+4" on a Mac that takes the screenshot (brings the crosswires
to select an area) of a selection. I'd suggest we make the default
Ctrl+Alt+Print (similar to Print and Alt+Print).

[Bug 581838] Re: Manually created menu item in Gnome disappears from Gnome, Ubuntu 10.04 (64 bit).after reboot

2010-08-27 Thread Hugo.Batel
I use lucid 64bit on my desktop and a 32bit version on my laptop.

At first i had this problem only on the 64bits version but now, maybe
after an update, i also have this problem on my laptop with the 32bits
version of lucid.

The workaround presented by marcelo also works for the 32 bits version.

I think, if it exists, then the cache should be updated at least on the
user logon to the system.

[Bug 625479] [NEW] The document contains only empty pages (when on an ext3 partition)

2010-08-27 Thread Scaler
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

For any cbz file on one partition (/home) thumbnails work in nautilus
and files open normally, but for the same file on an other partition
(/media/Donnees) thumbnails fail and when opening file with evince,
there is this error showing : "The document contains only empty pages"
and none pages are shown. (But the number of pages is correct in the top
bar.)

There's two main differences between the two partitions: the first one
is in ext4 and on a SATA HDD and the other one in ext3 and on a PATA
(IDE) HDD.

Useful (?) lines in /etc/fstab :

Ok... it is not theme specific. Sorry about the confusion. Now the crash
happens and is very repeatable.

Try logging out and logging back in. Launch terminal and try the "always

I got this enty in syslog.log
