[Bug 350329] Re: gnome-session-properties dialog is far too small

2010-11-27 Thread Paul Sladen
Changing/adding upstream bug report from dup. Upstream bug #329895 is
asking for persistence of width/height; Upstream bug #635891 is asking
for the /first use/ sensible to be larger (which is what this downstream
bug report is).

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gnome-session

Admittedly it can be resized, but why does the default opening size need
to be so small, forcing almost every user on a monitor bigger than
640x480 to have to open it up.

  Proposed solution:
- use maximum height of monitor, or 75% of it, but limit the width, since this
is already sufficient.
+ use maximum height of monitor, or 75% of it. The width should be increased
such that all of the present descriptions can be viewed rather than being
truncated (see dup Bug #633433 for more detail).

  (https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/bugs/278964 was closed after resizing
was committed, but the initial size issue remains)

[Bug 673362] Re: Cannot open Help from Appearance preferences

2010-11-27 Thread Hussam Al-Tayeb
Ok, try opening /usr/share/applicasions/yelp.desktop from a terminal as root
(so su first or sudo)
and add
MimeType=x-scheme-handler/ghelp;
to the end of the file on a new line.
then
update-desktop-database -q
then
update-mime-database /usr/share/mime

Does that fix it?

** Description changed:

i've applied the latest updates then rebooted.
Got my theme changed without asking for, and looking at .Xsession-errors:

The program 'gnome-settings-daemon' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
    (Details: serial 947 error_code 8 request_code 3 minor_code 0)
    (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

Running into console: sudo gnome-settings-daemon --sync,
  the result is :
   - first time: cant detect synaptics device ( this system have not one
anyway, package only installed, so it might not complaint)
  so i reconfigure gnome-setting-daemon, then

   - second time:
     ...@dub:~$ sudo gnome-settings-daemon --sync

[Bug 677940] Re: brasero crashes when clicking BURN

2010-11-27 Thread david cuddy
Juan,
Two results to report.

1) You asked that I try to reproduce this bug with 10.04. My in-service
(MythTV) system was installed from Mythbuntu 10.04 LiveCD a couple weeks
ago. As such, Brasero was not installed. However, today I upgraded the
system to a full Ubuntu desktop using the Mythbuntu Control Center. This
added Brasero and all sorts of other software. I then tried burning an
ISO image of the Ubuntu-10.04.1-desktop-i386.iso (685 MB). It
succeeded. In order to fully duplicate my previous test case, I next
burned the 10.04.1 file as a data disk (not as an image). The burning
succeeded, but an error appeared at the end, telling me Brasero was
unable to eject the CD. I had to eject the CD manually. I then mounted
the data CD on my MacBook - as far as I can tell, the burning was
successful.

I note that the version of Brasero installed on the 10.04 system is
2.30.2.

2) I booted my 10.10 test system (which had been installed from a
Mythbuntu 10.10 LiveCD, then upgraded to full Ubuntu desktop). This is
the system on which I've encountered the Brasero crashes. When the
desktop appeared, a pop-up notified that updates were available. I ran
Update Manager, which downloaded 2.6.35.23, some Apache fixes, etc.
After the updating was finished, I rebooted and re-ran my test case,
trying to burn a 644 MB data disc. Alas, Brasero crashed as before.
The log contains the same seg fault error.

I note that the version of Brasero installed on the 10.10 system is
2.32.0.

I have the same problem (also upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 (both

As a workaround, I disabled gdm by editing etc/init/gdm.conf. At the

2010-11-27 Thread Sense Hofstede
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 644168 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/644168

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue. However, I am
rejecting this as a paper cut because a paper cut is a small usability
issue in default or featured applications that are easy to install. From
the conversation of the upstream developers it seems that this issue is
complex, affecting multiple applications, and is not trivial to fix.
Therefore it is not a paper cut.

This issue also is a duplicate of another bug report, bug #644168. It is
probably better to have one bug report for all applications where this
can go wrong. Please follow the conversation there from now on. Thanks!

[Bug 36812] Re: Keyboard layout change on hotkeys press instead of release and do not work well with shortcuts

2010-11-27 Thread Sense Hofstede
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue. However, I'm
declining this as a paper cut because this bug is not trivially fixable.
A paper cut is a small usability problem in default and featured
applications that affect many users.

Please note that I'm marking this as Invalid for the One Hundred Paper Cuts
project ONLY.
I've opened a new task for Xorg in Ubuntu—which was missing—that makes this bug
show up on the radar of the people whose task it is to look after X. Previously
this tasked lacked, so the Ubuntu X developers couldn't have known this bug
existed. A task for xorg should have been added when this bug was marked as
Invalid for control-center.

[Bug 334809] Re: design problem? infinite wait for long queue

2010-11-27 Thread Jeremy Nickurak
Patch for xchat-gnome to use append.

Question though for notify-osd developers: Is there any scenario where
appending ISN'T the right behavior? Is it a common case?

Since the normal behavior of upstream's notification-daemon is to add
another notification for each notification, it seems that appending as
the default would be the closest to normal behavior. In the odd case
where one wouldn't want append, maybe an opt-out hint (x-canonical-no-
append?) could be specified.

[Bug 36812] Re: Keyboard layout change on hotkeys press instead of release and do not work well with shortcuts

2010-11-27 Thread Nick Andrik
** Description changed:

- I have Ctrl+Shift set to layout switch and press ctrl+shift+N (to open
- new Terminal or new tab in Opera) -- as a result I have my keyboard
- layout switched. This happens because Ubuntu (or XOrg?) change layout on
- key press instead of release and do not match layout hotkeys with
- application shortcuts. MS Windows do. If layout change hotkeys is
- pressed with another key this must be treated as application shortcut
- and layout must not be changed. Combined with shortcut bugs in some
- Linux applications [Bug 2561] this makes keyboard shortcuts nearly
- unusable in default bilingual configuration.
+ This is a bug about shortcuts mapped to combinations which include each
+ other.
+
+ For example, if we have Ctrl+Shift (for keyboard layout) and Ctrl+Shift+N (to
open a new terminal), then we are practically unable to use the second
shortcut; this is what happens:
+ Ctrl press (nothing happens)
+ Shift press (keyboard layout change)
+ N (a simple N appears, since a shortcut has already fired)
+
+ The expected behavior is to fire shortcuts on the release (not on press)
+ of the special keys (ctrl, shift, alt, etc) which is also how Windows
+ behave. This is a serious problem for bilingual layouts, typically using
+ Alt+Shift or Ctrl+Shift for keyboard layout change.
+
+
+ For users being affected by this problem, the easiest solution for now is to
add this PPA in your repositories:
+
+
+ Practical summary of this bug for ubuntu developers (since reading 120
comments is impractical for most):
+ This problem is a really old (since 2004) issue of the xkb part of xorg; the
main discussion was made upstream in freedesktop-bugs #865. There has been a
patch from Ilya Murav'jov for upstream (#55), and attached here (#61).
+ Upstream xorg has refused to apply the patch, mainly because it explicitly
contradicts the (xkb) spec (#84, #91).
+ This patch has been reported to work for many people without any problems,
and there is also a PPA by Oded Arbel (#95) where he maintains a patched
version of the ubuntu xorg.
+ The proper resolution of this bug would be to apply this patch in the
upstream xorg, or at minimum to the official ubuntu xorg package.

2010-11-27 Thread Twisted Lincoln, Inc.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

Currently, the dialog box that provides the progress indicator during a
disc copy cannot be minimized. Given the fact that it is always on top
of any nautilus window, it is particularly difficult to get work done
while the copy is active.

A workaround is to send the dialog to another workspace, but it seems
that there is no reason it can't be minimized, either to the
notification tray applet, or simply to the panel like any other app.

Hi John! Thanks for your bug report. The bug you describe is not

people more knowledgable about your bug will be able to help resolve it.

[Bug 682247] [NEW] gnome-screenshot unlinks saved file

2010-11-27 Thread Muelli
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-utils

gnome-screenshot unlinks a file before replacing it. This is
unfortunate because I hardlinked an existing screenshot and expected the
file to change whenever the screenshot changes, i.e. whenever I create a
new screenshot and replace an existing one.

To reproduce simple save a screenshot in /tmp/foo.png. Then hardlink it,
i.e. ln -f /tmp/foo.png /tmp/bar.png. Do a ls -l /tmp/{foo,bar}.png.
Then create a new screenshot and save it as /tmp/foo.png. Do a ls -l
/tmp/{foo,bar}.png and see two different files.

The solution is to just write to the file without unlinking it first.

[Bug 452279] Re: New themes doesn't appear on the themes list

2010-11-27 Thread fabtagon
Same issue for Ubuntu 10.10.

Additionally, misleading bug messages arise when trying to install a
theme that has already been installed, but does not show up on the list.

When using the theme installer (invocated e.g. from Firefox after
downloading a theme file from gnome.org): this file does not seem to be
a valid theme file (even though it obviously is, as it was
successfully installed earlier and worked when set into immediate
effect instead of opting to have it added to the list, what fails
without warnig).

When using gnome-appeareance-settings the following message gets shown:
Installation for theme '4DWM' failed. - Can't move directory over
directory. Still, while it might benefit the techy user, this does not
help Joe Random.

The file size should be BYTE COUNT period

A byte and a gigabyte differ by a gig. You are counting bytes, not

[Bug 682252] [NEW] Evince opens PDFs completely above screen, not listed in task-list or alt-tab

2010-11-27 Thread Jeremy Nickurak
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

The first time I open any PDF file, evince always opens completely above
the screen. The only way I can get at it is to hit alt-space to get a

[Bug 682272] [NEW] [SeaMonkey/Mozilla] gnome-default-applications.xml defaults for mail-reader does not handle URL mailto links properly

2010-11-27 Thread NoOp
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

 apt-cache policy gnome-control-center
gnome-control-center:
  Installed: 1:2.30.1-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 1:2.30.1-0ubuntu1

500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages

Also tested with:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/natty/capplets-data
http://packages.ubuntu.com/maverick/capplets-data

/usr/share/gnome-control-center/gnome-default-applications.xml
defaults for mail-reader settings are:

 executableseamonkey/executable
  commandseamonkey -mail %s/command
  icon-nameseamonkey/icon-name
  run-in-terminalfalse/run-in-terminal
/mail-reader

The line:
commandseamonkey -mail %s/command
is incorrect and causes mailto from other browsers (Firefox etc) to fail to
bring up SeaMonkey compose email when a 'mailto' url is clicked.

This line should be modified to read:
commandseamonkey -compose %s/command

Steps to reproduce:

1. Install configure SeaMonkey via the universe repositories:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/seamonkey
http://packages.ubuntu.com/maverick/seamonkey

2. Configure a valid email account in SeaMonkey verify that it is
working properly.

3. In System|Preferences|Preferred Applications|Mail Reader| set to SeaMonkey.
Note that the 'Command:' section is set for:
'seamonkey -mail %s'.

4. Open Firefox and click a valid 'mailto' link:
http://www.ubuntu.com/contact-us
  [Web feedback - webmas...@ubuntu.com]
  mailto:webmas...@ubuntu.com

Due to the incorrect '-mail %s' in nome-default-applications.xml, the action
will fail to launch an email compose window in SeaMonkey.

5. Modify /usr/share/gnome-control-center/gnome-default-applications.xml ($
gksu gedit /usr/share/gnome-control-center/gnome-default-applications.xml) to
reflect the recommended change:
commandseamonkey -compose %s/command

6. Repeat step #3 above and note that the 'Command:' section is now set for:
'seamonkey -compose %s'. Repeat step #4 above note that the result is that
SeaMonkey now opens an email compose window with 'webmas...@ubuntu.com' in the
'To:' address box.

finished the last line of main() but we never get back to the Linux prompt
as mono appears to be hung. When it's in this state, we can't run any
other mono programs until the hanging one is killed. Is it possible that
the mono runtime has a lock somewhere which prevents other instances from
running it and when one runtime instance is holding the lock forever??

Steps to reproduce the problem:
we haven't yet been able to consistently reproduce this, but we've seen it
several time. killing the one that is hung frees everthing up.

We'll keep trying, but thought it was worth entering the bug. Perhaps
there is something we can do to troubleshoot it when it gets in this state.

This looks like an issue with the io-layer.
When it happens again, please attach gdb to the hanging mono process
and get a backtrace of all the threads (type 'thread apply all bt' at
the gdb prompt). Also, what preecise version of mono are you using
(mono --version)?

Will do (the gdb bit). We're using 1.1.13.8.

I encountered the hang again. There are 2 mono processes. The first
yields:

(gdb) thread apply all bt

(gdb) bt

#1 0xbfb79858 in ?? ()

#2 0x in ?? ()

The 2nd process seems to have more info:

(gdb) thread apply all bt

Seems to happen if we leave threads running before exiting main and
threads are actively running and using AutoResetEvents,
ManualResetEvents, etc...
