[Bug 553162] Re: Set $LANGUAGE if the user picks a different locale in gdm, so that language-selector and gdm stop disagreeing

2010-12-12 Thread trespasser
It gives me SO much headache. I understand what I propose is a separate
approach but can someone please specify what drawbacks lie behind
creating a language-creator instead of language-selector? There are
only 10 types of users: those finding default language settings for
their country convenient and those needing custom locale files. So why
there's no creator that would allow to specify system messages language,
date in a form of %Y-%M-%D or -MM-DD, put in a decimal separator,
currency name, first day of the week and so on? It would auto-normalize
after a time by users' statistics (e.g. it can automatically sent
statistics after a few days without changes to the locales and after the
user agrees) so every popular scheme would come up shortly and could
be coming predefined with new system distributions. Why do I have to
trying out all the locales one by one to find out where's the one with
convenient date, or decimal separator, with learning whole lang file
structure and creating one myself as the only alternative? Language-
selector, when fixed, will only allow to speed-up the trying out part
but after trying every default set I will still end up editing files I
do not understand. Your approach gives only N/M-1 probability of
satisfying the user, where N is the number of prepared sets and M is the
number of possible language/country combinations. And those are small
chances.

[Bug 689066] Re: new appointment or new task produces segfault

2010-12-12 Thread Omer Akram
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

Now open your file manager, navigate to your /var/crash directory and open the
crash report you wish to submit.
If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with
'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is
the crash you would like to report. If you get an error that you aren't allowed
to access this report you will have to file it with 'sudo ubuntu-bug
/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash'.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 642913] Re: python wnck bindings have broken constants again

2010-12-12 Thread Stefano Rivera
IIRC like this was fixed in 2.30.0-3ubuntu1 (don't know why I didn't
close this bug)

  * Merge from Debian unstable (LP: #403078). Remaining changes:
- debian/control:
  + Remove bug-buddy build-depend
  + Add Vcs-Bzr link
  + python-evince suggest evince
+ Replace libevince-dev (which does not exist in Ubuntu) with our split
libevview-dev/libevdocument-dev.
  + Add libtool build dependency.
- debian/rules:
  + Run autotools on build
- debian/python-evince.examples:
  + Add examples for evince
- debian/watch:
  + Watch unstable series
- 90_autotools.patch:
+ Not required, autotools now run on build
- evince-2.32.patch:
+ To build against current evince.
  * Dropped changes:
- Use Ubuntu version for gnome-python-desktop conflicts, predates lucid.
  * debian/patches/01_wnck_enums.patch:
- Patch from upstream bugzilla, fix flags in the wnck module that were
  declared as enums. Closes: #597414.
  * debian/control.in:
- Build depend on libgnome-media-dev on Hurd now that it's built there.
  Thus build the python-mediaprofiles package.
- Build depend on bug-buddy on Hurd too since it's built there now.
  * Use Replaces instead of Conflicts to ease APT finding the correct
upgrade path.

[Bug 316996] Re: Taking forever to load up newest weather information when freshly connected onto the net

2010-12-12 Thread Per Ångström
Weather Report 2.30.0/Ubuntu 10.10

My experience with the weather applet and automatic updates, combined
with suspend/resume, is altogether bad: almost every time after resuming
from suspend the applet will be stuck updating, and I have to update
manually. The worst thing is that the icon does not give a clue about
the data being stale, so I guess many people don't see how bad it really
is.

2010-12-12 Thread Romano Giannetti
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

This bug is related to bug#23810 (yes, it's that old) but it's a related
but different bug.

I use evolution in a asus eeepc, resolution is 1024x600. I can resize
the evolution windows so that it fits ok, at about 900x550. But:

If I switch to calendar view, the window grows, in vertical, at
something more than 600px. The problem is that if I switch back to the
mail windows, I can't resize back to the previous value, as if the
switching to the calendar view set a minimum size that cannot be
overriden again.

I have to exit evolution and start it again to see the full mail again.

[Bug 689211] [NEW] yelp shows natty's About Ubuntu page in maverick

2010-12-12 Thread Eliah Kagan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

In an Ubuntu Desktop Edition login session on a Maverick i386 machine
with yelp package version 2.30.1-0ubuntu1, when I go to System About
Ubuntu, the page for Natty comes up. It begins: You are using Ubuntu
11.04 - the Natty Narwhal - released in April 2011 and supported until
October 2012.

This is really a Maverick system. The output of lsb_release -rd is:

Description:Ubuntu 10.10
Release:10.10

And the /etc/apt/sources.list file (attached) is normal for a Maverick
system.

I don't know what is causing this issue. On other Maverick boxes I've
used, About Ubuntu does not falsely state that the distribution is
Natty. If there's any more useful information I can send, please let me
know.

[Bug 486530] Re: Custom text styles not shown

2010-12-12 Thread Hell Pé
It seems that a lot of bugs (#670171, #521198, #504771) are related with this
one.
Isn't full Adium message styles support an important issue ? In Maverick,
Empathy still lacks CSS variants, anti-aliasing (buddy icons look horrible,
even with the Ubuntu default style), distinction between single-chat and
conference room windows, and proper font support, which causes usability
problems. Those styles are also difficult to install ; you need to copy-paste
the downloaded theme to a well-hidden folder
(~/.local/share/adium/message-styles/).
Shoud I file another bug report ? May I add it to the Paper Cut project ?

LEGOManiac, also note that this bug is only about spurious insertions of
0a into the PostScript output. You can most easily find out about that
if you activate error page printing in your printer, but this problem
should always occur and not disappear after some hours as you have
observed. So your problem is not the one described here.

[Bug 442130] Re: Custom fstab causes duplicate entries for partitions in Places

2010-12-12 Thread Mtt.Castelli
I confirm this bug is still present in maverick 10.10.

The partition affected is the same as before (with previuos ubuntu releases),
it is an ext3 logical partition,
labeled and identifies winthout uuid. This is, in fstab:

/dev/sda5 /media/DADA ext3 errors
=remount-ro,users0 0

By the way, the NTFS primary partition, same HD drive, where WinXP
reside,

/dev/sda1 /media/C2punti ntfs
nls=iso8859-1,users,umask=000  0  0

 is NOT affected.

I can't understand why using UUID this bug disappear, however, until
fstab will support the both ways, IT IS a bug.

[Bug 689271] [NEW] Evolution fails to decrypt GPG message if signature (not encryption) key is not available

2010-12-12 Thread Pauli Virtanen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

It seems that the bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution/+bug/90339 has
reappeared in evolution 2.30.3-1ubuntu7.1

Actual results:

1) I receive a GPG encrypted mail, sent to my public key. However, the
mail is signed with a key not in my keyring.

2) Evolution does not display the mail, instead it displays a red error
text output from GPG, with a message that the public key used for the
signature was not found.

3) Result: I cannot read the mail using Evolution. However, I am able to
read the mail on the command line by using `gpg --decrypt` -- it shows a
warning about missing signature key, but also shows the mail body.

Expected results:
Evolution should show the mail body, plus a broken seal at the bottom
indicating that the signature public key was not found.

Does this happen every time?
Yes.

[Bug 408417] Re: No option to log in remotely via XDMCP

2010-12-12 Thread Tom Ellis
So, I tested GDM 2.30.5-0ubuntu4 on Maverick with /etc/gdm/custom.conf set to:
[xdmcp]
Enable=true

Connecting to the system with '# X :1 -query ip' fails after hanging
for a few minutes.

After I recompiled GDM with the compile flag --enable-ipv6 set to no in
debian/rules as Sebastien suggests in #101 (available in my PPA here:
https://launchpad.net/~tellis/+archive/generic/+packages).

With the recompiled GDM, I can successfully connect to GDM remotely and
login via the GDM greeter, but no gnome-panel's are displayed. However,
upon the 2nd attempt, I can login and get a fully working desktop.

[Bug 689295] [NEW] fast user switching just locks screen

2010-12-12 Thread Simon Bock
Public bug reported:

[Bug 682984] Re: .iso images are too small, source data from NFS

2010-12-12 Thread Andreas Hofer
I observe the very same problem here on Ubuntu 10.10 (amd64 architecture).
Tried to create two data DVD iso images and also tried to burn directly to DVD.
Both should have around 3GB content, but the iso image is about 2MB in both
cases. The file lengths in the inodes seem to be correct though, since the size
of the burnt DVD is reported to be about 3GB.
Since I only have one machine running Ubuntu 10.10 amd64 machine, I cannot
say if this is a problem specific to the amd64 distribution. I hope this gets
resolved soon.
   Regards, Andreas

[Bug 408417] Re: No option to log in remotely via XDMCP

2010-12-12 Thread Tom Ellis
I also rebuilt Maverick's GDM keeping the --enable-ipv6=yes option and
bringing in the 03_ipv6.patch patch from Debian as mentioned in #96 from
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=579033, grabbed from
Debian package version gdm3_2.30.5-6 (build available in my PPA here:
https://launchpad.net/~tellis/+archive/customer1/+packages).

This works as expected, XDMCP session is successful but gnome-
session/panel's are not appearing until I log in via XDMCP for the 2nd
time.

I also carried out some verification with 10.04 using GDM
2.30.2.is.2.30.0-0ubuntu4 - XDMCP is working perfectly.

To summarise:

Ubuntu 10.04 - GDM 2.30.2.is.2.30.0-0ubuntu4 - Remote XDMCP successful
Ubuntu 10.10 - GDM 2.30.5-0ubuntu4 - Remote XDMCP connections fail
Ubuntu 10.10 - GDM 2.30.5-0ubuntu5-ppa1 with --enable-ipv6=no - Remote XDMCP
connections successful (but no gnome-session until second login attempt)
Ubuntu 10.10 - GDM 2.30.5-0ubuntu5-ppa2 with 03_ipv6.patch from Debian - Remote
XDMCP connections successful (but no gnome-session until second login attempt)

So, for 10.10, it looks like pulling in the ipv6 patch from Debian would
solve part of the problem and for 10.04 I don't see an issue.

[Bug 408417] Re: No option to log in remotely via XDMCP

2010-12-12 Thread David Ayers
Interesting.. I suppose you are connecting from a Maverick client? Which client
are you using?
I've got 2 i686 10.04 systems and I'm using:
Xephyr :1 -once -query hostname
and all I'm getting is a blank screen in the Xephyr window:
xserver-xephyr 2:1.7.6-2ubuntu7.4

If I try the same Xephyr command from a Maverick VM to the Lucie VM I
get a segfault.

[Bug 408417] Re: No option to log in remotely via XDMCP

2010-12-12 Thread Tom Ellis
Yes, for testing XDCMP for Lucid, I'm connecting from a Maverick desktop
to a Lucid VM, not using Xephyr though, just using 'X :2 -query ip'. I
also just installed, xserver-xephyr (2:1.9.0-0ubuntu7) on Maverick
desktop and tried with the command you suggested and I do not have an
issue connecting to Lucid. As mentioned before, I do not see the problem
on Lucid, only Maverick.

I've also tried the latest GDM from Natty (2.32.0-0ubuntu1) which brings
in the latest upstream release, this already has the IPv6 patch which
has been committed upstream and works perfectly for XDMCP (although I
still have the gnome-session issue), so I can confirm XDMCP will work in
Natty too.

[Bug 386235] Re: Change 'junk' and 'spam' folders (respectively)

2010-12-12 Thread fcastillo
I think this should be marked as a bug, since new user coming to Ubuntu would
like to use their IMAP mail with evolution. Many mail servers (including Gmail)
have their own folders for Trash and Junk, and when a user realizes that after
deleting a message, it doesn't really delete anything in the server, s/he would
get frustrated and stop using evolution at all.
This can be a big set back for newcomers, Evolution should work out of the box
with as many mail clients as possible, specially if some of this mail clients
are huge like Gmail.
This is also why people are usually switching to Thunderbird, even though the
default mail client is Evolution and frankly Evolution has better integration
with Ubuntu so we should try to make it better to use for everybody.

[Bug 688995] Re: gedit remains open when last tab closed

2010-12-12 Thread Chris Wilson
I would agree that Gedit should behave similarly to other applications,
and I would suggest that it mimic Nautilus in it's treatment of tabs, ie
hide the tab bar when there is only a single tab open meaning closing
the application is the only option to close that last tab.

An option should be placed in the preferences pane to allow this
behavior to be disabled, thus allowing the application to constantly
display the tab bar and to remain open after the last tab has been
closed.

[Bug 673774] Re: Prints wrong pages if specific numbers have been specified

2010-12-12 Thread Mike

Oh, I've found out what is the actual problem.
Usually, I see at the numbers of the pages in the preview pane. Please check
the attached screenshot.

The PDF file has its own page numbers sequence, started with C1, then two empty
numbers, then 1, 2, 3 etc (got 3 extra pages). This sequence matches the
printed numbers of the scanned pages.
So, when I enter a page number (say, 59) in the Goto page input box, I really
go to the page 59 which matches the table of contents. But it's not the actual
number of the page in the file (59+3=62).

The problem is that these numbers work in different way for the Goto
page input box and for the Print dialogue.

Thanks.

[Bug 408417] Re: No option to log in remotely via XDMCP

2010-12-12 Thread David Ayers
Thanks a lot Tim... It seems that for my use case using X directly would
actually also be more appropriate anyway.

I have my desktop session running, switch to terminal 1 via ctrl-alt-F1, login
then run:
sudo X :2 -query ip
my screen goes blank but no greeter is displayed. I've attached the custom.conf
from the server, but I don't find anything unusual.

I suppose that the main difference between our setup is that you are
using two 64-bit systems while mine are i686, is that correct? These
are both Dell pre-installed systems that have been upgraded to Lucid
with many manual configurations and a few proprietary drivers for
misguided hardware purchases :-/ oh well...

I'd install 64-bit Lucid on both via external USB drives but due to:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub-installer/+bug/45989
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub-installer/+bug/46520
that's a bit tedious for my production systems... but I hope I'll get around to
it coming week.

Again, thanks a lot for providing the PPA's for lucid and spending the
time to knock this out.

2010-12-12 Thread Tom Ellis
In my .xsession-errors file I have the following:

The program 'gnome-panel' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAccess (attempt to access private resource denied)'.
  (Details: serial 160 error_code 10 request_code 130 minor_code 5)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

[Bug 61786] Re: 'Create folder in here' context menu option for nautilus

2010-12-12 Thread David Klasinc
This should be fixed in One Hundred Papercuts. Really. It was reported
in the upstream in the year of 2002. If I fix it, will packager include
the patch or we have to rely on the upstream to fix this?

Seriously, list view in nautilus is something that I use the most and
there is no way (visible way) on how to create a folder.

If there is someone working on UX study for Ubuntu, then they need to
look at this.

[Bug 689377] [NEW] Panels fail to appear on Gnome startup on Averatec notebook running 11.04 alpha1

2010-12-12 Thread Peter Belew
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I have installed 11.04 'natty narwhal' beta-1 on my Averatec 3280
notebook, and have updated it daily through this morning.

This has a Unichrome display which only supports Gnome in 11.04. This
display has had a number of problems with previous versions of Ubuntu,
mainly documented in bug #495553, but on the initial release of 11.04,
most of the problems seemed to have been solved. (See the last few
comments in that bug report for details).

Starting yesterday, 11 December 2010, a new problem has surfaced. When
the Gnome display comes up, after logging in, either neither panel
appears, or just the bottom panel appears. Once in a large number of
trials, both panels will appear. Currently neither shows up. Yesterday,
after this started happening, I add the Main Menu to the bottom panel,
then created desktop icons for a number of common programs (Terminal,
Firefox, Update Manager, Synaptic, etc.) so I could continue testing and
reporting on the system.

I had previously installed an ssh server and some other shell utilities
to make it easier to access the system when display problems occur.

I am attaching the current output of apt-show-versions to show the
current state of the system. A xorg.conf file has been installed to
solve a screen resolution detection problem - that and some Xorg.0.log
files are attached to the #495553 bug report.

[Bug 689399] [NEW] evolution icons for delete/cancel are non-intuitive

2010-12-12 Thread Sam Brightman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

The evolution toolbar has an icon for delete and an icon for cancel
current email operation. There are several problems with this:

* the icons are similar, both visually indicate almost the same concept
* in fact, they are (in my view) the wrong way around. the cancel icon
signifies delete to me. and probably the delete is more like cancel
* the cancel operation icon is arguable not important enough to be in the
toolbar in the first place, but even so there should be clear design separation

The icons should be changed to be more distinct and indicative of
function.

[Bug 689377] Re: Panels fail to appear on Gnome startup on Averatec notebook running 11.04 alpha1

2010-12-12 Thread Peter Belew
I tried a brief test of Safe Mode instead of Classic mode. The panels
appear properly in Safe Mode, but not (necessarily) in Classic (Gnome)
mode. I just tried 3 times:

Safe Mode: Panels ok
Classic Mode: only bottom panel
Safe Mode: Panels ok.

Just logging out between tests, not rebooting.

No, I see this problem on my HP Mini 110, which properly resumes on lid

[Bug 689426] [NEW] Confusing error message when the sound capture fails

2010-12-12 Thread Arseniy Alekseyev
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

I received the following message when the sound capture failed during an
audio call:

There was a failure in the call engine:
Could not link source

The underlying problem turned out to be incorrect configuration of the default
gstreamer source. I had /system/gstreamer/0.10/default/audiosrc set to osssrc
while I did not have OSS installed.
ALSA-based applications worked perfectly so I had no idea why empathy would
fail.

The problem became obvious when I executed the following command: gst-
launch-0.10 gconfaudiosrc ! gconfaudiosink

The output clearly showed what went wrong:

ERROR: from element /GstBin:bin0/GstOssSrc:osssrc0: Could not open audio device
for recording.
Additional debug info:
gstosssrc.c(379): gst_oss_src_open (): /GstBin:bin0/GstOssSrc:osssrc0:
Unable to open device /dev/dsp for recording: No such file or directory

I think it would be great if the empathy error Technical details
showed this information or at least hint what it was trying to do (open
the gconfaudiosrc gstreamer element).

Even a slight modification of the error message could make it vastly more
useful:
Could not link gstreamer source 'gconfaudiosrc'.

[Bug 673774] Re: Prints wrong pages if specific numbers have been specified

2010-12-12 Thread Marcel Stimberg
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 114462 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/114462

I see, that's the kind of issue I was expecting. It is a really difficult
problem, though, evince wants to support two kinds of page numbers: The table
of contents page number, so that if the document mentions see page 59 you
can enter this number in the input box and jump to the respective page. The
real page number, so you can print every page of the document (in your
example, the first three pages would otherwise not be printable. It's easy to
overlook, but evince actually gives both numbers for every page (next to the
59 in your screenshot it says 62 sur 292 -- so the real page number is
62).
That said, I agree that the situation is not optimal. There is already a bug
report about this issue, further comments should be added there (or, even
better, to the linked upstream bug report): #114462 . I'm therefore marking
this bug as a duplicate.

2010-12-12 Thread André Pirard
Thanks for changing your mind in time. The problem has been reported upstream:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=32342

May I try once again to explain that ONE CANNOT RENAME STANDARD FOLDERS because
there may exist references to them. Please stop repeating that I said that not
renaming standard folders is a problem.
I SAID THAT RENAMING STANDARD FOLDERS **IS** THE PROBLEM.
Please try to understand that what I said is that symbolic links should be used
INSTEAD of renaming.
(We can use symbolic links. Instead of renaming ~/Desktop, let's make a
~/Bureau - Desktop symbolic link.)

[Bug 226436] Re: Home folder names don't change after changing language if folder not empty

2010-12-12 Thread André Pirard
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 556933 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/556933

It's an error to [try to] rename standard folders because there may exist
references to their files.
That is why xdg-user-dirs does not rename nonempty folders.
But this is indeed inconvenient and there is a solution that is not.
The correct solution is to create symbolic links as explained in
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=32342
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xdg-user-dirs/+bug/556933
In consequence, I have made the incorrect bugs duplicates of these.

[Bug 556933] Re: Update standard folders should add language links to folders, not rename them

2010-12-12 Thread André Pirard
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xdg-user-dirs
+
+ Update: I made a more concise version of this text upstream at:

This applies to all Ubuntu (Gnome) versions up to 10.04.
Note: understand Bureau below as the name of any standard folder in any
language. For example, also Картинки = Pictures folder name in Russian.

  Summary:
This report explain some of the many pitfalls caused by the renaming of
Desktop to Bureau.
These pitfalls can cause programs, scripts and the system itself to misbehave.
A drastic solution is to make a Bureau - Desktop symbolic link instead.
Furthermore, this seems very simple to implement, it almost already works.

When a user changes the language of its profile she/he is asked a funny
question in Desktop-1.png.
Update standard folders to new language?
He/she does not understand and he replies yes. From then on, obscure magic
happens.
Among other folders, ~/Desktop is renamed ~/Bureau, but only if it is empty.
Let's assume it's not. Then a new ~/Bureau is created beside.
If the user drags New file (Desktop-2.png) a little bit, it disappears
(Desktop-3.png).
It will reappear after the next Login, at which time all the other Desktop
objects disappear.
Then she/he makes a screenshot and is told that a file she/he doesn't see
does exist (Desktop-3.png).
Nothing is lost, the user has 2 desktops, Desktop and Bureau, only now
showing, hard to guess.
The same applies for Documents, Music, etc... total confusion.
If some program unaware of this game looks for Desktop, it won't find it.
Etc... etc... Confusion looks like the comments of (different) Bug #209513.

Every time one refers to ~/Desktop, it's a mistake, and that's not only in
programs...
Every time someone writes cd ~/Desktop in sample code on the Web, and even
worse in a script, they're doing a BIG MISTAKE. They should explain that, if
and only if their system implements standard folders renaming, French people
must type cd ~/Bureau, Russian ones cd ~/работая стол etc, even more
complicated for the script. HOW SIMPLE !!!

This is obviously not the way it should work.
This is NOT Windows. We can use symbolic links.
  Instead of renaming ~/Desktop, let's make a ~/Bureau - Desktop symbolic link.
EVERYTHING will continue to be able to refer to Desktop unchanged.
And the user interface (Desktop, Nautilus...) will happily refer to ~/Bureau
all the same.
It will contain the same data, because the same folder.
The only setting needed is the name to use : Bureau, meaning ~/Bureau,
redirected at will.
It's best to create the aliasing without asking the user any question.
There can be a setting for those really wanting to see the folders' names in
any language they choose.
If the user changes language again, it's best to leave ~/Bureau intact in
case it's referred to somewhere.

The BEST OF ALL is that it already works. Almost...
Before xdg-user-dirs comes into play, make sure Desktop is not empty and
create ~/Bureau - Desktop.
xdg-user-dirs will not change that and the aliasing will work free of all
those inconveniences.

  User experience.
The above kludge has been used for a 6-language 10-users couple of Ubuntu
8.04 systems.
Beside ~/ being crowded with aliases in 6 languages, the only inconvenience
has been Picasa.
They found 6 times the pictures they eagerly looked for.
They will have to learn that scanning a filesystem must not follow aliases.
