[Bug 771633] Re: [Natty] Realtek ALC888 0x10ec0888 - mic not functional

2011-05-08 Thread Lucio M Nicolosi
Problem solved. What happened? I don't know.

Puzzled with the fact that I was the only guy in Ubuntu Natty planet
with a crashed sound, decided to give another try.

This time, instead of zsync-inc my .iso sources from
cdimage.ubuntu.com , zsync-ed from the actual Natty release in nearest
mirror (it shouldn't make any difference since I started seriously
testing Natty Beta just after the final release on April 28 - but, in
fact, there was a slight difference, less than .5%). Then burned a USB
stick from within the current and buggy Natty test install, instead of
using the Maverick application .

Booted from the USB stick in "test Ubuntu" mode, completely updated the
stick from the standard source, checked the microphone and of course it
didn't work.

Opened alsamixer in a terminal screen, because of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/771739 -
and enabled the rear mic - standard in my system.

Tested the Sound Recorder again and "voilà" it works! This time without
the serious distortions observed before.

Installed Natty on HD again, (third or fourth time) now from this
special stick, tested sound and it works, updated (almost 200 Mb in
file updates up to now) and it works, installed Skype and it still
works, enabled NVidia last video driver, rebooted and Unity is there,
and I still don't like it but at least the sound works.

What really happened? I really don't know, but somehow it is was
"magically" solved. I guess David Henningsson will be
happy to know or perhaps a bit intrigued, like me.

[Bug 453942] Re: Evolution freezes while checking IMAP email

2011-05-08 Thread ricardisimo
Evolution freezes my system up completely (except the cursor, I should
say.) It doesn't happen when evolution first launches, but only when I
go to "Contacts" and try selecting a specific contact (any specific
contact, rather). I'm attaching the trace I produced following the debug
instructions. I had to leave the system frozen for hours before I could
x-out evolution. It stayed frozen and grayed out, but at least I got the
little pop-up dialog that asked if I wanted to force quit. I chose yes,
and then could get to the terminal.

I think I was supposed to follow the second half of the instructions
WHILE evolution was frozen, but I couldn't do any such thing, because
the entire system was frozen. Anyhow, debug seemed to say something
about there being no trace to report. I don't know... please peruse the
attached report, and let me know what else I can produce for you.
Thanks. This is really annoying.

Re: [Bug 625670] Re: Not all desktop items are themed

2011-05-08 Thread aidanjt
It's fixed in Natty. If you want to stick with Maverick, then
paste/enter this command into a terminal:

sudo cp -n /etc/gdm/PostLogin/Default.sample
/etc/gdm/PostLogin/Default && echo "killall -9 gnome-settings-daemon"
| sudo tee -a /etc/gdm/PostLogin/Default

That'll work around the problem.

[Bug 705123] Re: Options tab missing from Startup Programs prefs dialog

2011-05-08 Thread jimav
If nothing is going to be done, then the documentation is wrong (it
still copiously tells the user about the session-management tab, etc.).

So this is a bug, which if not fixed in the code, should be fixed in the
documentation (to make it tell the truth).

[Bug 705123] Re: Options tab missing from Startup Programs prefs dialog

2011-05-08 Thread jimav
What a mess. Decades ago, the X Window System came with a session-
saving protocol which allowed apps to tell the window manager to restore
them later. This served Unix and later Linux pretty good for a very
long time. Then, a couple years ago, the X-server-based protocol was
deemed unacceptable and support was yanked without notice form Gnome and
replaced by a new protocol which no application supported, and a big
Gnome update was released in that state. Of course, this meant that
session-saving was completely broken. Over the past few releases, many
(but not all) apps were updated to work with the new Gnome session-
saving protocol, and by Ubuntu 10.10 session-saving was useful again.
Arguably all that work was pointless to begin with, but now it is
completely wasted because session-saving of any kind has been disabled.

We are now just like Windows, with only a manually-maintained list of
"startup apps".

The post referenced in comment #4 says that sessions saved under one
window manager or session type (unity, etc.) were not compatible with
other session types. Well, then why not save sessions independently for
each type of session? It would be better to force users to separately
set up their session under each scheme than to not allow it at all.

Alternatively, make "save session" an interactive program which grabs
the display and lets the user click on each window they want to save,
and then creating new entries in the "startup programs" list just as if
the user manually entered them. This might avoid all the problems with
automatically saving all windows except those which shouldn't be...

[Bug 706587] Re: gdmsetup "autologin" setting disagrees with user-admin "Password: Asked on login" setting

The main problem seems to me, that the no-password-login is provided by giving
the user some special group.
Why not configure such a thing in /etc/gdm/custom.conf and move the checkbox to
gdmsetup? I think, most users will look there for enabling such a feature.

[Bug 777227] Re: Evolution stops at "Retrieving message O%"

Same here.
upgrade to 11.04 (64 bits)

Could this be related to:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution/+bug/773908

I'm behind a firewall too (tomorrow I'll try disabling the proxy).

Evolution does not even show me the dialog to enter the imap passwd
(mapi works ok, asks for the password when needed, but is somewhat slow)

When trying to get the CAPAbility, not a single packet goes out to any
server, and evolution hangs for at least couple of minutes.

Tried removing .evolution, usr/share/evolution and gconf/app/evolution
but nothing different happens

[Bug 779665] [NEW] Unable to load image-loading module: /usr/lib/gdk-pixbuf-2.0/2.10.0/loaders/libpixbufloader-svg.so

2011-05-08 Thread Hadmut Danisch
Public bug reported:

Hi,

was working well for more than a year under ubuntu. After upgrading
ubuntu to 11.04, bibble5 crashes when run under the 64 bit version of
ubuntu (still works with the 32 bit version of ubuntu).

The last (and abnormal) lines bibble5 prints on stderr are:

/usr/lib/gio/modules/libgiobamf.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64

So it looks as if there was a severe problem between the gimp libraries and
librsvg, introduced with Ubuntu 11.04, which occurs only on the 64 bit version.

[Bug 284443] Re: gdmsetup: Don't offer autologin for ecryptfs users

2011-05-08 Thread TomasHnyk
Robert: does this mean that bug 753707 was introduced? It seems that
autologin now does not work when .ecryptfs is present in the $HOME
directory of the user to be autologged in.

If I can add my two cents, that seems to be a bit unfortunate, because
now gdm does not ask me for password anyway (it just wants me to select
myself as the user to be logged in) so the encrypted directory is not
mounted anyway and autlogin does not work either.

There is a README in my Private directory that reads as follows:

THIS DIRECTORY HAS BEEN UNMOUNTED TO PROTECT YOUR DATA.

>From the graphical desktop, click on:
 "Access Your Private Data"

or

>From the command line, run:
 ecryptfs-mount-private

Why don't we change it so something like this (I am not a native speaker
so the English might be dubious, I am not sure if autlogin can be made
into a verb) :

THIS DIRECTORY HAS BEEN UNMOUNTED TO PROTECT YOUR DATA.

This may be because you were autologged in and thus did not enter your
password.

 "Access Your Private Data"

[Bug 779639] [NEW] gnome screensaver activation is hindered by unobscure routine

2011-05-08 Thread Robert Lange
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

The problem occurs in Natty, using the Unity desktop. I have not tried
the old-style desktop to see if it also affects that.

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=649755

I have reported upstream a bug in Gnome Screensaver that is preventing
my screensaver from activating during session timeout. The symptom is
that the session times out, the screen fades to black, and then
immediately returns to the desktop. The symptoms are similar to Bug
#241206 and Bug #363635, but the cause is different than those bugs.

Summary of upstream bug report:

The problem is caused in gs-manager.c by the function
window_obscured_cb. This function is called when the screensaver window
is obscured (i.e., when fast user switching swaps to another VT) or
unobscured (i.e., switching back to the VT). In addition to attempting
to disable or re-enable the screensaver animation, when the screensaver
is unobscured the callback automatically makes a request to unlock the
screen. This saves the user from having to press a key or wave their
mouse around to bring up the unlock dialog.

My problem is that, for reasons I do not understand, my screensaver thinks,
every time it activates due to session timeout, that its window is obscured
briefly. window_obscured_cb is called twice in rapid succession, once for
obscure, then again for unobscure. Because I do not use the screensaver lock
feature, this means that, on the unobscure call, the screensaver is
deactivated. Thus, my screensaver will never activate due to a session timeout.

I have verified that the obscured window event is the reason for the
screensaver deactivation using the debugging output.

I have attached a patch in the upstram bug report that fixes the problem
by removing the line that calls the screensaver unlock automatically as
a result of an unobscure event.

2011-05-08 Thread Andrew Manson (real_ate)
I can confirm that creating the folder ~/.gimp-2.6 fixes the problem
that I had as described in the duplicate:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gimp/+bug/775586

If I create ~/.gimp-2.6 gimp starts fine. If I delete ~/.gimp-2.6 gimp
crashes with a segfault again and re-creating ~/.gimp-2.6 fixes the
problem (again).

[Bug 779585] [NEW] Evolution x Notify Applet: Evolution dont goes to "systray"

2011-05-08 Thread Leonardo Silva Amaral
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Since Evolution exists, isn't possible minimize evolution to Systray.
Ubuntu implements the notify applet to unify messenging facilities, but
different from Empathy or Gwibber, Evolution is aways on taskbar when
its open. A "Workarround" is use the systray plugin for Evolution and
send it ti systray, but this solution isnt possible. Since this feature
exists on Empathy (When close Empathy, it goes "invisible" but still
open, being possible access it from notify applet) and on Gwibber, i
decided file a BUG, because Evolution is the only application still in
taskbar and when its "closed" it really closes instead to just dissapear
and still available from notify applet.

I'm having the exact same problem. Ran the same debug and got

number of contacts?

As an aside, I own two android devices and both sync fine.

[Bug 779573] Re: cannot make keyboard layout global/system-wide

2011-05-08 Thread peterbo
Also, in 11.04 (Gnome, classic no effects) assigning caps lock only to
switch between DK and US keyboard layout works only if you wait about
500-1000 ms after pressing the caps lock key.

In 10.10 this switch of layout was instant. Seems to be instant if
shortcut key is e.g. alt + caps lock.

[Bug 779570] [NEW] Nautilus paths are copied to clipboard with encoding

2011-05-08 Thread Damián Nohales
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Hello!

I wanted to report a Nautilus issue at copying a path from the location bar.
I'm using Nautilus 2.32.2.1-0ubuntu13 on Ubuntu 11.04.

The issue is that when I copy a path from the Nautilus location bar
using Ctrl+C, the path is saved in an encoded form on the clipboard, for
example:

Location bar reads: "/home/me/Lot of documents"
When I copy the path, the clipboard content result on this:
"/home/me/Lot%20of%20%documents"

This issue applies only when the path is copied using Ctrl+C shortcut,
there is no problem when I copy the path using Right click -> Copy or
when I cut the path.

This issue also complicates the "Nautilus-Actions Configuration Tools"
passing the encoded path to an action when it uses a %f token to get the
first selected path.

That's all guys!
Regards!

close shutter, remove notification applet and put it again, skype

[Bug 720389] Re: The touchpad works very bad

2011-05-08 Thread Reinhard
Hallo Airam,

Thanks for your help in "my" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/xserver-xorg-input-synaptics/+bug/762768.

I sympathize with your feeling "I'm feeling a bit alone here ...".

May be we are spread over to many bugs?

I still hope that the 8 month old SuSE fixes will find a way into the
normal distribution.

For the moment I will use the normal package with 2 changes in my
parameters:

AreaBottomEdge=4331 (instead =0)
Important: to make text-selection possible

TopEdge = 0 (instead=1627)
just improves usability: cursor moves, even if the finger is at the top of
cklickpad.

It looks like, if there is no major strategy for that Clickpad - stuff,
which gets quit complex with all these features and options.

greetings
reinhard

[Bug 779523] [NEW] Adressbook shows contacts in all books

2011-05-08 Thread Tjerkkamstra
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

When I create multiple addressbooks in Evolution and then create a contact in
book A, it also shows up in book B.
If I try to delete the addressbook I get a notify that I can do no such thing.
When I reboot evolution with evolution -force-shutdown and then reopen
evolution and delete the addressbook I can do that for just one book.

It seems that it is not working properly.
