[Bug 1000545] Re: Update to 3.5.2

2012-05-21 Thread Robert Ancell
As Cimi pointed out it seems to be a packaging bug as the theme modules
weren't being loaded. I've fixed that by adding back
debian/patches/061_multiarch_module_fallback.patch as the theme packages
don't have the modules in a versioned library directory. However GTK+
now crashes when loading the modules, so more investigation required.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to
look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many
changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem
may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if
you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version. When you test
it and it is still an issue, kindly upload the updated logs by running

[Bug 682788] Re: Improve Unity menus

2012-05-21 Thread Aaron C. de Bruyn
I can't stand the global menu. I've switched away from unity as a result.
As a developer, I constantly have a bunch of 'layers' of windows open.

For example, I might have a terminal window open in the background, my
IDE over top of that, and finally my web browser for testing the site
I'm developing.

Now I refreshed a page on the website and I want to see my terminal in
the background (instead of my IDE) to see some output...except I can't
just minimize the IDE like I could with previous versions of Ubuntu--
because there is no minimize button until I click on my IDE and then
move the mouse all the way up to the top-right corner of the screen.

Unity totally interrupts my workflow with the global menu and also the
screwed up ALT+TAB order and behavior and all the shortcut keys its
taken over. The whole 'lens' idea is awesome though--why wasn't it
simply added to Gnome2/3?

[Bug 1002543] [NEW] Shotwell's crop options are hidden in the menu

2012-05-21 Thread Alex Moldovan
Public bug reported:

Right click on a photo and choose "Open With Shotwell Photo Editor".
Choose "Crop" and go to the crop options that start with "Unconstrained"
to chose other settings. The menu opens but it's empty. All other
settings are hidden below, leaving the most part of the drop-up menu
empty. To find other options you must scroll down a few times. See
attached screenshot.

[Bug 1002537] [NEW] Shotwell "Send To Email" doesn't attach multiple photos

2012-05-21 Thread Alex Moldovan
Public bug reported:

1) Open Shotwell
2) Select multiple more than one photo from your library
3) Right click on the selection and choose "Send To..."
4) At "Send To" window accept default settings and click OK.
5) Choose "Send as: Email" and click send.

Result:
Thunderbird opens but there' just one photo attached to the email, not all of
them.

Expected result:
All photos should be attached to the email.

Workaround:
At the "Send To" dialog window use the "Scaling constraint" to change the size
and then all photos will be attached to the email.

I can reproduce this every time. I have used small photos so that the
size of the attachment won't be a problem. I'm not sure it's a
regression but I don't remember having this issue in Oneiric. I will
test with Evolution if necessary.

[Bug 976083] Re: Screen brightness settings

2012-05-21 Thread Atheg
Yeah, same thing. It's weird because the slider slides like it is
recognizing the change in brightness, but it isn't actually making the
screen brighter or less bright. Haven't tried it when connected to AC,
but definitely a problem on battery (when I most want to crank up the
brightness so I can see my screen in the sun.)

[Bug 984785] Re: .goutputstream files polluting $HOME

2012-05-21 Thread Dennis Baurichter
Thank you Karolis! I downloaded your file and merged the duplicate
blocks (search + replace). It's 330 lines now, instead of 3900.

Here are the diffs:
$ diff PART1 PART2
2c2
< sh
---
> lightdm # LightDM start
$ diff PART2 PART3 # "FILE CREATED!!!" is between these two (empty diff)
$ diff PART3 PART4
2d1
< lightdm # LightDM end
$ diff PART4 PART5

< xfconfd

< xfsettingsd
14d11
< gvfsd
$ diff PART5 PART6
7d6
< xfwm4
# ... and so on (only processes quitting or becoming "" and then
quitting)

When I ran my script lightdm appeared right after "FILE CREATED!!!", but
it probably spawned a bit earlier, i.e. right before .goutputstream-* is
created. It was also the first process to quit after the creation of
.goutputstream-*.

Now, in a Xfce session, we have lightdm spawning right before
.goutputstream-* is created and quitting afterwards again.

It's not a proof, but an indication.

And I have no clue why it is started (by user 1000!) at all ...
Anybody else?

[Bug 682788] Re: Improve Unity menus

2012-05-21 Thread Fabien Lusseau
@Chris: We can also argue that having a global menu for anything make
the user maximize because this user don't want to move his mouse all
over his desk to only reveal a menu ...

I know I feel this problem, and I maximize nothing. Having this option
(use global menu only for maximized windows) will actually make my
desktop more efficient for unmaximized windows ...

I don't know why you are thinking the opposite, I think "use global menu
only for maximized windows" will not do anything about your "fear" of
... of what actually ?!

I mean come on ! It's not like someone will change all his behaviors
depending on (on large screens) 2% more wasted space.

And even me, that is extremely annoyed by theses recurring search of the
missing menu have not changed my behaviors at all in that matter.

[Bug 990725] Re: Shotwell will not detect mts moviefiles on memory card

2012-05-21 Thread Clint Rogers
Hi Sebastien,

Where do the videos normally get written to on a Lumix?

Due to a workaround to some problems between GPhoto and many Android
devices (http://redmine.yorba.org/issues/1903), we've had to explicitly
whitelist directories we want it to tell us about.

(I admit this is a suboptimal way of solving the issue, but at the time
the initial bugfix was applied, it was too late in the development cycle
to try to get GPhoto fixed; in order to help current users, we'll
whitelist whatever directory you specify, with the understanding that we
should try to help GPhoto have the ability to report the existence of
.nomedia files (please see http://redmine.yorba.org/issues/4238 for
details)).

[Bug 1001868] Re: Selecting property file or folder freezing it

2012-05-21 Thread gabbo
Sorry but I am not really expert in that I have read the debugging
tutorial and I tried to use Gdb and Valgrind I succeed in use them with
a program like Vlc but with nautilus that should be the program to test
as a matter of fact I have to open properties of folder or file with
right mouse button I can't use them because both of them run and then
exit automatically without waiting the generation of event like it
happens instead using Vlc as program. So I can't test anything because I
have no time to perform any actions necessary to reproduce the crash as
tutorial tells. I don't know where I am wrong using these commands. If
someone can help me I can try to go ahead.

I run the following commands as show in tutorial:

Gdb:
gdb nautilus 2>&1 | tee ~/gdb-nautilus.txt
handle SIG33 pass nostop noprint
set pagination 0
run

Valgrind:
G_SLICE=always-malloc G_DEBUG=gc-friendly valgrind -v --tool=memcheck

[Bug 682788] Re: Improve Unity menus

2012-05-21 Thread Dag Ågren
I have found that sometimes icons in the sidebar are mysteriously
coalesced. For instance, I've had Chrome and gedit merge into a single
icon, and clicking it would bring up the windows for both. However, this
happens too seldom to be reproducible, and I am not sure it has happened
in 12.04 yet, so I have no idea if it has been fixed yet.

But that is fairly offtopic for this bug.

For this, I agree: Hiding the menu is TERRIBLE for usability. Please
don't fall into the trap of trying to reduce "clutter" by sacrificing
usability. "Clutter" is NOT always a problem that needs to be fixed.
Sometimes you really do need it. There is a reason the menu bar is
always visible on Mac OS X. Apple does put a lot of effort into
usability.

Hiding it destroys most of the benefits of a global menu bar, rendering
it mostly useless. The fact that you can no longer aim at the entry you
need is a serious problem with this design.

[Bug 585592] Re: Bluetooth PIN always random

2012-05-21 Thread nh2
Using Ubuntu 12.04.

This is hilarious. You connect a device that doesn't even have keys
(e.g. a wireless touchpad), bluetooth-wizard tells you that it it is a
"Tablet" but if you use "automatic pin", it still tells you to enter a
six-digit number into the *touchpad*. It should know better.

Then you select "use ", click next, what do you get? "Enter 518421
at the other device." :(

Then you select "use custom pin", enter yourself, click next.
"Enter 518421 at the other device.". It just doesn't care what the user
wants.

Where is the upstream place to report this? It has been here for years
and it is really time for it to go away.

[Bug 1002450] [NEW] neither network-manager will connect to hidden network

2012-05-21 Thread Denis White
Public bug reported:

On one computer, installed wicd, deleted network-manager, but would not
connect until I turned on broadcast ESSID at router. On other computer
as soon as I turned on broadcast the regular network-manager connected.

Original post:

@Chris:

Well, you seem to be an heavy menu user, most users are not (if you use
a web browser, an email client and a text editor most of the common
functions are in the toolbars for example). Quite some users like the
visual improvement and the clutter reduction which goes with hidding the
menus. That said adding an option to not hide the menus was planned for
precise but didn't get worked in time, it's like to happen next cycle
though

>Like this one and also the fact that a large number of applications
don't appear on the Alt-Tab menu even when they are running.

That seems to be bugs rather than any design decision, you should open
bugs when you run into such cases

[Bug 1002416] Re: file roller errros

2012-05-21 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 682788] Re: Improve Unity menus

2012-05-21 Thread Chris Richards
One reason "use global menu only for maximized windows" is a bad idea
because you shouldn't be trying to encourage people to be maximising
windows. The reason we have larger screens is so we can fit more than
one window on the screen at any one time, I usually have several.
Microsoft Windows users are the main culprits of the "maximize
everything" culture and this is not something anyone should be aiming
for.

What OSX does with it's permanent menus actually works well and I've
never heard any complaints about it. Everyone who has been forced to
use Unity at the company I work for has complained about this particular
aspect of it. The solution is easy, just enable always visible Global
Menus, or at-least allow us the option to enable then.

[Bug 682788] Re: Improve Unity menus

2012-05-21 Thread Chris Richards
Please, oh Ubuntu gods, allow the Global application menu to always be
visible!

There's nothing worse than having to move your mouse around to discover
what might be or might not be there. It takes all the snappiness out
of the interface.

This fading menu is a terrible idea! It means I have to continuosly
hover my mouse over the top bar to see what the options are. How is
this good?

Even when I can remember what the menu options are, I still have to
first move my mouse to the top and then move accross to the exact
location of the menu item. It really slows my workflow down. Please
fix it!

The Unity interface is so nearly great!. it just has a few massive
usability issues that stop it from being great. Like this one and also
the fact that a large number of applications don't appear on the Alt-Tab
menu even when they are running.

Who is making these UI decisions? developers? Why do you think apple
don't have fading menus?

[Bug 908472] Re: Please include Gimp 2.8 from Debian experimental into Ubuntu 12.10 and backport to 12.04 LTS

2012-05-21 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package gimp - 2.8.0-2ubuntu1

---
gimp (2.8.0-2ubuntu1) quantal; urgency=low

  * Merge from Debian unstable (LP: #908472). Remaining Changes:
- debian/patches/02_help-message.patch,
  debian/patches/03_gimp.desktop.in.in.patch:
+ Update some strings for Ubuntu
- debian/control:
  + Update description
- debian/rules:
+ Set gettext domain and update translation templates
  * Drop the following patches that were applied upstream:
- debian/patches/ghost-cursor.patch: fix Wacom tablet cursor events
- debian/patches/embed-page-setup-dialog.patch

gimp (2.8.0-2) unstable; urgency=low

  [ Jordi Mallach ]
  * Use a shlibs.local file to force a dependency on libbabl >= 0.1.10.
GIMP has an internal check for this version and will refuse to start
otherwise, as it relies on some optimisations made to babl in
0.1.8 → 0.1.10 (closes: #672247).

  [ Ari Pollak ]
  * Add Breaks/Replaces on old gimp-plugin-registry because of conflicting
file-xmc plugin.

gimp (2.8.0-1) experimental; urgency=low

  * New upstream stable release (closes: #644182, #671399).
- “Create” menu item is now accessible via a mnemonic (closes: #610579).
- fixes build error with GEGL 0.2 (closes: #671982).
  * Massive update of Build-Depends, to ensure all new features are
enabled (bzip2 compression, JPEG 2000, Ghostscript, PDF export, GUdev,
X Mourse Cursor and others), as per configure.ac.
  * Build depend on unversioned libpng-dev (closes: #662347).
  * Don't pass --without-hal to configure, it's obsolete.
  * Build-Depend on gnome-pkg-tools and include check-dist.mk.
  * Update Vcs-* URLs.
  * Remove duplicate Section fields.
  * Remove gimp.preinst, it only handled upgrades from pre-lenny.
  * Use an explicit "set -e" in other maint scripts, instead of using the
shebang.
  * Drop 01_debian_gimprc.patch, obsolete. The web-browser config option
is now gone and by default gimp will open help internally.
  * Rename fix_gimp4hurd.patch to 01_hurd_ftbfs.patch.
  * Drop part of 01_hurd_ftbfs.patch which has been applied upstream, and
add a patch header.
  * Update watch file so it works for any new stable release directories.
  * Rewrite copyright file in machine-readable format 1.0. The GIMP is now

[Bug 904505] Re: Flash doesn't work in epiphany-browser

2012-05-21 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Epiphany is GTK3, Flash is GTK2. Because it's not possible to mix GTK2 &
GTK3 in the same process, this bug won't be fixed until Epiphany
supports out-of-process plugins. That might happen for Epiphany 3.6 or
3.8 (Ubuntu 12.10 or 13.04).

[Bug 386953] Re: Focus is moved from desktop to window

2012-05-21 Thread Dennis Baurichter
> This issue seems to be gone in Karmic. Can anyone confirm?

I found this bug while searching for another one. It's not a problem for
me, but in Ubuntu 12.04 (Unity) I experience almost the same behaviour
as specified in the description. The only difference is, that a file /
folder is focused in Nautilus only when I manually focused one before
(between steps 2 and 3).

I have also got this bug and here it is causing system crash. This bug exists
after Ubuntu 10.04, at least for me. It is reproducible
by opening sites with flash content. Also for those who, this is just a logging
issue, well let me say, it is not. This is real problem and it should be fixed.
I am also giving my system information so that developers can fix this easily.

[Bug 984785] Re: .goutputstream files polluting $HOME

2012-05-21 Thread Dennis Baurichter
> is that specific to one of the lightdm greeters?

I don't know if it's specific to unity-greeter. Maybe an Xfce / LXDE
user can try the script I attached. There are also some Xubuntu users
which commented on this bug.

For those who want to try my script: You should start it only just
before requesting shutdown or restart. It produces a lot of output into
the logfile (more time -> more output).

> do you mean that it happens at logout?

It happened on shutdown. It seems that makes a difference here (between
logout and shutdown I mean; see comment #29).

I did this:
- rm ~/.goutputstream-*
- start ps-log.sh: sudo -b nice -n -19 sh ./ps-log.sh
- start gnome-session-quit --power-off and click on "Shutdown" (This should be
the same as top-right button in Unity -> Shutdown -> Shutdown.)

After restarting my computer I looked into ps-log.out:
...
COMMAND
gnome-session
...
FILE CREATED!!! <-- This is the point where my script first sees an
~/.goutputstream-* file.
COMMAND
lightdm
...

[Bug 984785] Re: .goutputstream files polluting $HOME

2012-05-21 Thread Dennis Baurichter
Summary of previous comments:
- blank files (#25, #31) or partial copies of .Xauthority (#11, #15, #26 / #28,
mine too)
- in Ubuntu and Xubuntu (files shown by Nautilus, Thunar and ls; no file
manager problem)
- created on direct shutdown (but not logout -> shutdown)

Workaround: put 'sh -c "rm ~/.goutputstream-*"' (without the single
quotes) into autorun

My Software:
- Ubuntu 12.04 amd64 (up-to-date)
- file-roller installed but usually not running (also not running on shutdown:
see below)
- No gtk-recordmydesktop, Dropbox or UbuntuOne.

I tried to find out which software is creating these files. I used (e.g.)
inotifywait (package inotify-tools) and lsof, but it didn't work out. Probably
the .goutputstream-* files are open only very short (too short for my script to
catch it although run with niceness -19).

Then I simply logged all processes running with my UID (1000) in an
endless loop (i.e. until the script was terminated because of shutdown).
I'll attach the script and its shortened output (removed duplicate
blocks with no changes in process list and many blocks at the
beginning).

The output also contains a line stating "FILE CREATED!!!" when the
~/.goutputstream-* file is created. Just before / after this gnome-
session quits and lightdm is started by UID 1000 (not root as usual). I
don't know, why it is started, but it is also the next process which
quits.

lightdm also uses the ~/.Xauthority file. See
strings `which lightdm` | grep -iE 'output|xauth'
and the source code of lightdm:
grep -ri xauthority /path/to/source/of/lightdm-1.2.1/src/

lightdm is used by Ubuntu and Xubuntu, but not Kubuntu. This fits to the
previous comments.

Maybe also related: GIO (part of glib)
http://developer.gnome.org/gio/2.30/GOutputStream.html

Get own processes using this:
ps -o comm= -U 1000 -u 1000 | while read cmd; do file=$(which "$cmd") ||
file=$(locate -b "$cmd*"); strings -af $file | grep -E ': g.*output.*stream';
done > search.out

I assume it's a problem with lightdm, but I can't fix it. I hope my information
helps.

[Bug 965953] Re: indicator applet with scroll arrows

After messing around with the patch some more, the issue I mentioned
above seems to be that the menu is being generated super-tall, then
shrunk back to size almost instantly. I somehow managed to get the
super-tall menu to stay open for both the Dropbox and Battery
indicators. Not as huge an issue as completely unusable indicators
(like before Jiahua's patch) but still a very noticeable UX issue.

[Bug 965953] Re: indicator applet with scroll arrows

2012-05-21 Thread Alex Cabal
Thanks Jiahua, I was able to test it out with your instructions. It
looks like your patch fixes the problem, thanks!

However there's a slight issue: with the patch applied, when you open an
indicator, the menu flickers near the top of the screen for a split
second before aligning back down to the bottom where it should be. (Or
perhaps the menu opens up to double-size and the instantly shrinks back
to normal size, it goes so fast it's hard to tell.)

This doesn't seem to affect usability, but it's very noticeable and
detracts a bit from the smoothness of the UI. Is there anything that
can be done for that?
