[Bug 1244158] Re: GNOME: Modifiers Only keyboard layout switch have no effect

2013-12-04 Thread Sergey Zolotarev
I don't know if this is the same issue but recently this started getting
even worse:

1. default input language for some reason is not English
2. as a consequence, the LED lights on when I switch to English (should be the
other way around)
3. Alt + Space doesn't work anymore (should switch to next input source but
doesn't switch anything)
4. switching language via indicator doesn't work

[Bug 1238410] Re: Inconsistent cursor visibility with cursor plugin enabled

2013-12-04 Thread Sebastien Bacher
That seems like https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=706229, but
the upstream bug applies to GNOME 3.10 and not our 3.8 version.

The GNOME ticket also points to an xorg issue,
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=59644
which might fixes the issue seen here

Do people having the issue "play" with their trackpad while the screen
is loading? it seems like it could be happening while events are mixed
on loading. Does it happen if you keep your hands off the device on
boot?

[Bug 1257668] [NEW] Snapping nautilus to the right and then to the top freezes the system

2013-12-04 Thread nimu
Public bug reported:

I experienced this bug since the update from 13.04 to 13.10

This is probably a unity bug, but it only occurs with nautilus file
manager.

Steps to reproduce:
- Drag nautilus to the right or left edge to activate unity snapping feature
- Then drag nautilus to the top edge to maximize the window

Expected behaviour:
- The nautilus window maximizes and fills the whole screen

What happens instead:
- The whole user interface freezes and does not react to any kind of input,
making the system unusable. Mouse curser can be moved around but nothing is
clickable.

Snapping and maximizing all other applications using the edges of the screen
works fine.

[Bug 1215463] Re: "Disable while typing" should disable cursor movement

2013-12-04 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Sorry for not commenting on that earlier...

Just as a comment, I don't know how you are doing your user testing but
from what we see in Ubuntu/on launchpad, the current settings are
working quite nicely. We tried quite some different behaviour, timing,
options in the past and we always had some slashback/unhappy users. We
didn't really get any complain from the current configuration though. Is
the feedback one you got from your users/customers or is that just the
feeling from the system76 team looking at the polish of the OS?

> The problem is that on Ubuntu, this creates an annoying amount of cursor

what are competing platforms doing? blocking the cursor move?

> block accidental tap-to-click (which seems unlikely something you can do by

not sure what makes you think it's "unlikely", before we added that
syncdaemon use it was trivial to miss-click by holding your hands over
the touchpad area, some touchpads are just weird acting.

see e.g https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-
synaptics/+bug/240738 and the duplicates/comment

> Without the "-t" option, syndaemon will block cursor movement,

right, that's wrong, we have been there, see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-
daemon/+bug/801763

blocking movement feels wrong, you type than move to the touchpad and
try to move the cursor and it doesn't react, that's a very
confusing/frustrating user experience

0.5 was creating issues for some users, see

An XSync alarm on the IDLETIME counter set up for a negative transition
may not trigger. Specifically:

- the alarm is set up for NegativeTransition, delta 0, abs value 10ms
- if the idle time is > 10ms, a move of the mouse resets the idle time counter
to 0. This will trigger the alarm notify to be sent (correct behaviour)
- SyncComputeBracketValues() is called to re-compute the bracket values
- the bracket value for the negative transition (10) is higher than the current
value (0). Thus, the bracket is not set.
- the idle timer goes above 10 ms, but a reset will _not_ send an event from
now on.

However, if after the 10 ms any alarm triggers and/or is changed by a
client, SyncComputeBracketValues() will recompute the bracket values and
will install our alarm as lower bracket. Thus, it will trigger for the
next reset.

This is a mess in the server and not easy to fix, and I'm not sure how
to fix this at the moment.

As a workaround, a client can do the following to address the issue:

If a client needs a NegativeTransition alarm events for a threshold T,
it can create _two_ alarms. One for a negative transition on T with the
event mask set, and one for a positive transition on T with the event
mask not set.

This way, if the negative transition bracket is not set (see comment 0),
the positive one is set. And once that fires, the brackets will be
recalculated and the negative transition alarm will be re-set. Since the
event mask is clear for the positive alarm, no event is sent, so the
client doesn't need any further adjustments.

The same should work for a client needing a positive transition alarm,
with the obvious changes.

I should qualify that.

Per-device alarms seem to work great, I wasn't able to make the cursor
disappear completely without it reappearing when using the touchpad. This was
my reproducer:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=706229#c21

However, gnome-settings-daemon's power plugin watches for the global
idle time, and it has trouble turning the backlight back on when a key
is pressed.

My test case is:
- setup "blank screen" to 1 min in the power settings
- let it blank
- press esc once the screen has gone completely black
- wait a second, screen doesn't turn on
- press ctrl, you'll see the password prompt instead of the shield, meaning
that gnome-shell did receive the "esc" (that dismisses the shield) but
gnome-settings-daemon didn't notice the key press as not being idle anymore and
didn't turn on the backlight.

Using:
grep -q "^use-ssh-agent$" /etc/X11/Xsession.options || { stop; exit 0; }
To detect whether or not to launch the ssh agent doesn't seem to make sense to
me, since if "use-ssh-agent" is true then ssh-agent will be setup by
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/90x11-common_ssh-agent (and later launched), so there
doesn't seem to be a need for an upstart script here.

cannot reproduce this bug anymore. Seems it's gone. Thanks anyway.

[Bug 1202198] Re: gnome-settings daemon notifies as error an info message

2013-12-04 Thread Javier Bahillo
Hello:

This bug is actually the same that the one for fedora in here
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=883401 (which I think @Tim
knows as he has done some interactions)

Nevertheless, several tries do not actually fix it:

https://launchpad.net/~bencer/+archive/desktop-bugfixes -> this ppa
version of gnome-settings daemon implements the blacklist method that
was implemented in fedora bug, but as a difference to fedora patch, it
for some reason is not notifying when the printer is not reachable for
some reason. So, it solves the "ERROR: connecting to printer" but it is
not a valid solution as the user is not being notified of actual issues
with the printer .

I have as well tried converting rpm from fedora to deb with alien, and
installing it, but in such case I do not get any notification at all (not even
that the document is sent to the printer)

Perhaps the issue then relies in any other package but I'm not sure in
which if them it might be

I have a feeling that the message is coming from Date and Time or Event

this check box state and closed the prerefence pane.
Before I changing checkbox state, I ran gsettings list-recursively >filename1

the differences.
Unfortunately not have differences. :-(:-(

I tryed compiling an original upstream gnome-terminal 3.8 release from git, but

[Bug 682788] Re: Improve Unity Global Menu

2013-12-04 Thread Mateusz Stachowski
The patch provided by Ryan Koesters works when applied to Unity in
13.10.

I've build Unity and then I had a new GSettings option. When I checked
that menubar-always-visible the global menu became visible all the time
for all programs.

This should be available in 14.04 LTS for the people that don't like the
default hiding of global menu. Of course it would be even better if this
could be toggled from Appearance settings instead of dconf-editor.

[Bug 1257054] Re: accounts-daemon causes lightdm to hang when there's lots of entries in /etc/passwd

2013-12-04 Thread Steve Jahl
Looks like the upstream accounts-daemon devs added a feature which makes
the daemon look in /etc/login.defs for UID_MAX, and it won't try to look
at UIDs higher than that.

Setting that to a lower value fixes things for me, so we can consider
this issue closed.

[Bug 1226962] Re: Hotkeys not functional in non-latin keyboard layout in 13.10

2013-12-04 Thread Anton Statutov
UPD: ok, m17n partly works. It doesn't work only in Kate on my computer
(but works on nearby computer with exactly same configuration). Also
there are some side effects in some applications like Thunderbird: if
you type symbols in it then Ctrl+Z will revert all symbols one by one
(this is not correct behavior).

Offtopic: I really don't understand Ubuntu's team politics. What the
reason to rewrite and completely break such a essential functionality as
layout switching in "stable" release (and force users to update to this
release)?

2013-12-04 Thread Javier Bahillo
Hello Sabastian, I think that these errors are not the error shown to
the user, but some error that cups daemon (or any other related daemon -
perhaps through dbus) sends to gnome-settings daemon . I do not know
what is the content of the "data" argument in

if (!known_reason &&
!reason_is_blacklisted (data)) {

Perhaps Tim could helps us to clarify this, provided he was the one that opened

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. The issue you are reporting is an upstream one and it
would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug to the developers
of the software by following the instructions at

tell us the number of the upstream bug (or the link), so we can add a
bugwatch that will inform us about its status. Thanks in advance.

[Bug 1257920] [NEW] Left/right Ctrl/Alt/Shift key limitation not respected for language input shortcuts

2013-12-04 Thread Andreas Jonsson
Public bug reported:

I know there are a lot of bugs on the text entry source keyboard switch
shortcut. I hope this is not a duplicate. I couldn't find it reported
anywhere.

The problem: Specifying keys such as "Shift L", "Shift R", "Alt L", "Alt
R", "Ctrl L", and "Ctrl R" in the "Switch to next source using" box does
not always limit the switch to being executed to the specified key, in
other words, if you specified to use "Key L", sometimes "Key R" will
execute the language switch, and vice versa. This occurs in the
following cases:

I have two input languages selected:

Primary: English (US)
Secondary (Swedish)

0. Set keyboard switch to "Alt+Shift L" (use "Alt L" to define the
shortcut, not sure if this matters, but just in case)

1. Press "Alt L+Shift L" ("Alt L" first and "Shift L" second)
1.1 Note that language input switches to the next source -- All good so far

2. Press "Alt L+Shift L" again in the reverse order ("Shift L" first and "Alt
L" second)
2.1 Note that language input switches to the next source -- This is OK, order
shouldn't matter

3. Press "Alt L+Shift R" ("Alt L" first and "Shift R" second)
3.1 Note that language input does not switch to the next source -- It shouldn't
since we specified to use "Shift L", not Shift R", so this is still good

4. Press "Alt L+Shift R" again in the reverse order ("Shift R" first and "Alt
L" second)
4.1 Note that language input switches to the next source -- This is not good,
"Shift R" should not execute the switch since we specifically defined the
shortcut to use "Shift L"

5. Press "Alt R+Shift L" ("Alt R" first and "Shift L" second)
5.1 Note that language input switches to the next source under specific
conditions (only if you are switching from primary to secondary language, not
vice versa) -- This is not good, it should switch every time

6. Press "Alt R+Shift L" again in the reverse order ("Shift L" first and "Alt
R" second)
6.1 Note that language input switches to the next source under specific
conditions (only if you are switching from primary to secondary language, not
vice versa) -- This is not good, it should switch every time

7. Press "Alt R+Shift R" ("Alt R" first and "Shift R" second)
7.1 Note that language input does not switch to the next source -- It
shouldn't, so this is good

8. Press "Alt R+Shift R" again in the reverse order ("Shift R" first and "Alt
R" second)
8.1 Note that language input switches to the next source under specific
conditions (only if you are switching from primary to secondary language, not
vice versa) -- This is not good, "Shift R" should not execute the switch since
we specifically defined the shortcut to use "Shift L"

In summary if you define the shortcut to be "Alt+Shift L" problems occur
when pressing in 4 out of 8 combinations (order included): "Alt L+Shift
R" (Shift-key first), "Alt R+Shift L" (Shift-key first), "Alt R+Shift L"
(Alt-key first), and "Alt R+Shift R" (Shift-key first).

Now, finally you can repeat this exercise for any permutation of
combinations of the Shift L", "Shift R", "Alt L", "Alt R", "Ctrl L", and
"Ctrl R" keys (set shortcut to "Alt L+Shift", "Alt+Ctrl L", "Alt
L+Ctrl", ..., "Shift+Ctrl R", "Shift R+Ctrl") and you'll find similar
problems, but not always identical to the behaviour outlined above.
However, I have not had the desired to map this all out :-) Hopefully
the example above, with "Alt+Shift L", will be enough to round up the
problem in the code.

I attached the patch for the newly forked unity-control-center that adds

Thanks Ryan, if you could also implement a toggle to use global menu
with maximized applications only, that would be great!

BTW: does the patch in its current form ever display window's title for
maximalized windows?

I mean, will we have to apply the patch after each update? Sometimes
updates overwrite patched versions of Unity. I'm asking if this patch
suffers from the same or is it independent from ordinary system updates?

[Bug 1254923] Re: Source repo has moved

the lp:shotwell branch from ~eric-yorba/shotwell/trunk to

ourselves, and it won't let me delete his branch or create a new import

[Bug 1257939] Re: Does not show fingerprint in key import dialog

2013-12-04 Thread Seth Arnold
I presume this is due to some limitation in the key search protocol that
is being used. Compare the following two sks keyserver searches:

http://pool.sks-keyservers.net:11371/pks/lookup?op=vindex&search=seth.arnold
http://pool.sks-keyservers.net:11371/pks/lookup?op=vindex&search=seth.arnold&fingerprint=on

Perhaps 'fingerprint=on' isn't an option on all keyservers? Or perhaps
they are using a more meager search mechanism that doesn't expose this
information cheaply.

Once the key _has_ been imported, the fingerprint is then available.

This might also be a failing at the GPGME interface level; I understand
gpg --recv-key, when given a fingerprint, will download a key matching
only the keyid, and it does not verify that the fingerprint matches
before saving the key into the keyring. I'm having trouble tracking down
a reference for this behavior though.
