[Bug 1719500] [NEW] 17.10 Black screen pre and post login on virtualbox
You have been subscribed to a public bug: I have been testing the daily builds from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com /daily-live/current/HEADER.html on virtualbox (https://www.virtualbox.org/) in a windows host. I originally installed it a few weeks ago, and would do an apt update and apt upgrade every day to get the latest changes. Then when I did an upgrade about a week ago, I ran into these issues. I tried downloading the new image every day since (although it looks like that image has not changed in the past week or so anyhow), and it installs fine, I can log in fine, but once I do the apt update and reboot, I get a black screen where I should see the login. Steps I made to replicate (can someone else verify the same thing happens?): - Install virtual box 5.1.28 - Create a new vm (4GB ram, 10GB hdd) - Insert and install the image daily 17.10 image (from link above) - Boot to login screen, log in and load to desktop - Do a sudo apt update and a sudo apt upgrade - At this point it sometimes comes up with the prompt to reboot, either way, reboot - You will find a black screen when you should see the login screen (if you move your mouse over or click you can see random white pixels around) - Before moving the mouse or pressing any keys, press enter, enter password, press enter again (as you would do normally to log in) - For a second the console screen (sometimes purple background, sometimes black background) shows some feedback - Once booted into desktop, all is black again (with random white pixels sometimes) I do not have a PC available at the moment to test on, and haven't had a chance to test in a vm with a Ubuntu host (or any other host). Ubuntu 16.04 has been working in another vm on the same machine for ages, and 17.10 was working until recently. ** Affects: gdm3 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: bot-comment -- 17.10 Black screen pre and post login on virtualbox https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1719500 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm3 in Ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

I have the same problem on ubuntu 17.10 with gnome shell 3.26.0 Bug usually occurs while tabbing between active windows. I do not have actual reproduction steps as it does not seem to occur consistently on my machine, just about once per week. [Bug 1713323] Re: HiDPI support partially broken after upgrade to Gnome 3.25
Info: Ubuntu 17:10 upgraded from 17:04 (64bit) gnome-shell --version: GNOME Shell 3.26.0 loginctl show-session 3 -p Type: Type=x11 Screen resolution: 3840x2160 VGA: nvidia 1050ti - 384.69 kernel: 4.13.0-11-generic Status: 1. every update is applied. 2. tested with gnome extensions I've install, 'on' and 'off': result was the same 3. Gnome-tweak-tool - my default font size setting: 0,8 (I think that 0,8 - 0,9 is ok. With value less than 0,8 text is too small and with bigger than 0,9 ..should be under "universal access"=is too big). Problem: 1. The gnome topbar is too small (both size and text), time and date are barely visible. 2. The dash's texts are also too small (names of the apps - under app's icons) 3. The window titlebar's text is tiny, although it's size is fine Temporary Workaround (old ones - from a dupplicate bug): 1. if restart environment (alt+f2, r + enter) --> this fixes topbar size but leave other apps like nautilus untouched (which is fine cause they are working fine already) 2. if change font size through gnome-tweak-tool --> this fixes topbar size but also changes nautilus font size, which is not good, because nautilus font is already ok Temporary Workaround (NEW - fastest): 1. change font size in any value through gnome-tweak-tool. For me, change from 0,80 to 0,81 and back to 0,8 solves the problem. BUT: The workarounds mentioned above are temporary because the setting is undone after reboot. Other Issues: 1. with font size on 1.00 (through gnome-tweak-tool) everything is very big. 2. Many Topicons are very small (like viber, telegram, skype, mega) Others (variety, deluge) are fine. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-shell in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1713323 Title: HiDPI support partially broken after upgrade to Gnome 3.25 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1713323/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 1698287] Re: VA-API fails to initialize in a Gnome Shell Wayland session
It appears forwarding was blocked by uncertainty around comments made by the upstream reporter saying he would not accept it (although I'm not sure he himself is upstream): https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=783169#c7 At the time I ignored that comment because it's not a good enough reason to reject the approach. The patch we use in comment #12 above is trivial and perfectly solves this bug. However the upstream comment is about the same approach not solving other issues that might arise from a user setting his/her own *_BACKEND environment variables. I don't think that upstream comment should be considered a blocker. While valid, it is not pragmatic and the patch we use is perfectly safe and closes the bug. Upstream really is asking us to solve larger gstreamer design problems which Ubuntu isn't interested in solving right now. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to mutter in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1698287 Title: VA-API fails to initialize in a Gnome Shell Wayland session To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/libva/+bug/1698287/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1719410] [NEW] maximized windows get resized when returning from screensaver
Public bug reported: This is hard to describe, but I'll try: - maximize a window - let the system go into blank screen - return to the session - notice how the maximized window gets resized horizontally until settling down on the maximized state sometimes the window can even remain unmaximized (horizontally). [Bug 1719192] [NEW] Some Top Icons Disappear After Screen Locks - 17.10
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Hi friends. I'm testing Ubuntu 17.10 with Gnome 3.26. I noticed some top bar icons disappear after my screen locks and I go back in to my active session. As an example, I currently have Quassel, Telegram, and Nextcloud sync client in the upper right corner displaying their task tray icons. If I lock my screen and re-authenticate back in to my active session, Quassel remains, but Telegram and Nextcloud are gone. The only way to get them back is by closing the application the missing icon belongs to and re-launching it. Thanks for all of your hard work! [Bug 1717241] Re: nautilus crashed with signal 5 in _XReply() - drag and drop crash
Dear Bug Triager, I have now realized that the Xorg team won't look into Xinerama issues as they claim that it's deprecated in favor of RandR. Please feel free to mark this bug as Won't Fix as that better reflects the reality of the situation from the standpoint of the Ubuntu developers. FOR ANYONE ELSE WHO MAY CARE ABOUT THIS: At some point I realized that both Xinerama and the Compiz window manager where causing this problem. Besides the bug issue reported above, the setup was causing very slow graphics performance and a few crash reports. Sticking with Nvidia proprietary drivers, I made the switch to BaseMosaic (instead of Xinerama) and moved away from the Unity/Compiz combination and on to Gnome-Classic/Metacity (Non-composite window manager). For Gnome Classic the package to install is gnome-session- flashback, and you need to use it because Unity requires a composite manager while Gnome Classic does not. This nearly solved all problems, but then I found resume from suspend not working properly. Resume from suspend was working in the sense of restarting the system again (I could ssh into it), but the display monitors remained black. The culprit was the Nvidia propietary driver, which I finally removed in favor of the nouveau driver. Last but not least, a bit of shifting monitors around with xrandr, and problem solved! To sum up, use: - Gnome Classic Desktop Environment - Metacity Window Manager - Install a dock launcher like cairo-dock if you are missing Unity's dock - Nouveau driver - NO xorg.conf file! - Xrandr if you are not getting the correct monitor layout - place the xrandr command in an executable shell script, and include the script in the startup apps. ** Description changed: + NOTE: Ubuntu won't fix this bug, but if you are interested in a work + around, read the last comment! + + ORIGINAL BUG REPORT: + To reproduce on a fully updated Ubuntu Desktop 16.04 system with Unity: Step 1: Start nautilus Step 2: Drag and drop a file to any target: to a different folder in the same nautilus window, to another folder in a different nautilus window, etc. ... The target is irrelevant. Expected to happen: File successfully copied or moved. Actually happened: Mouse pointer changes to a hand with a plus sign. Source file moves only slightly and then freezes, never makes it to the target. Application locks up for a few seconds, and then the application window vanishes. Crash report is then generated. Ubuntu release: Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS Nautilus package version: Installed: 1:3.18.4.is.3.14.3-0ubuntu6 Additional (and maybe relevant) notes: 1) Drag and drop function seems broken generally, across applications, not just in nautilus. For instance, same behavior appears when trying to drag and drop a Thunderbird message to another Thunderbird folder, or when trying to drag and drop a cell or a range of cells within the same Libreoffice Calc spreadsheet. 2) Interestingly, application windows can be dragged and dropped across display monitors (3 monitor setup), without any problems. 3) I am using proprietary NVIDIA drivers, but please do not suggest using nouveau drivers, because they work horribly (heavy display corruption, pixelated screen, and constant mouse flickering) 4) Graphics setup: NVIDIA Quadro NVS 450 card with twin GPU and 4 heads. NVIDIA proprietary driver version 340.102 (installed from ubuntu repositories, not from proprietary NVIDIA installer; this is the correct driver version for this card according to NVIDIA documentation). 3 monitors connected in a simple horizontal layout. 5) Nautilus extension installed: nautilus-share 0.7.3-2ubuntu1 6) Attaching a nautilus debugging log from terminal command: G_DEBUG="all" NAUTILUS_DEBUG ="All" nautilus 7) Attaching X Org log file with -logverbose 6 option 8) Attaching xorg.conf configuration file ProblemType: Crash DistroRelease: Ubuntu 16.04 Package: apport 2.20.1-0ubuntu2.10 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 4.10.0-33.37~16.04.1-generic 4.10.17 Uname: Linux 4.10.0-33-generic x86_64 NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia_uvm nvidia ApportVersion: 2.20.1-0ubuntu2.10 Architecture: amd64 CrashReports: 640:1000:116:10641522:2017-09-14 12:49:07.088649823 +0200:2017-09-14 12:27:03.381461842 +0200:/var/crash/_usr_bin_nautilus.1000.crash CurrentDesktop: Unity Date: Thu Sep 14 11:02:40 2017 ExecutablePath: /usr/bin/nautilus ExecutableTimestamp: 1481715745 PackageArchitecture: all ProcCmdline: nautilus ProcCwd: /var/crash Signal: 5 SourcePackage: apport StacktraceTop: ??
