Currently I have English, Vietnamese (Unikey), and Russian language in
my switcher. I cannot switch from Russian to Vietnamese, I must switch
to English first, and then to Vietnamese.

Does work: Vietnamese -> Russian
Does work: Vietnamese -> English
Does work: Russian -> English
Does work: Russian -> English -> Vietnamese
Does not work: Russian -> Vietnamese

This always gets me, especially because in the status bar it will say
"vi" but when typing it's still cyrillic.

This was worked around with gdm3 42.0-1ubuntu4 (which caused a
regression but will be fixed in 42.0-1ubuntu5)

Maybe we want to use a different bug to track the Nvidia drivers needing
to be updated to support suspend and resume correctly so that Wayland

Nvidia drivers don't meet GNOME's standards for suspend and resuming from
suspend. It is intended that that will be fixed in a stable release update for
22.04 LTS. Once that happens, Wayland should work without needing any change
from GDM. (Just a reboot.). This issue is currently being tracked with LP:

How this was broken and fixed

I took gdm 42.0-1ubuntu3 and removed the one cherrypicked patch we no longer
needed. That required rebasing later patches. I made a mistake when rebasing.

To fix this, I returned to the known working 42.0-1ubuntu3, kept the
patch but added a new patch at the end to revert the patch we don't
need. This is a cleaner fix and will work better when we package the new
GDM release where we will probably still need the revert patch.

After updating gdm3 from 42.0-1ubuntu2 to 42.0-1ubuntu4 in jammy, it no
longer shows any sessions in the bottom-right corner. When I log in, I
am dropped into an X11 session, with no way to switch to Wayland.

Downgrading the gdm3, gir1.2-gdm-1.0 and libgdm1 packages to
42.0-1ubuntu2 or 42.0-1ubuntu3 restores the option to select sessions
and defaults to Wayland again.

Looking at the changelog:

gdm3 (42.0-1ubuntu4) jammy; urgency=medium

* Drop patch disabling Wayland on hybrid laptops using Nvidia's drivers.
It's not needed for Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (LP: #1968809)

dark background with black text for HTML emails in the message preview.
Previously in Impish, the background was white with dark text.

a bit more analysis on where the bug is. TL;DR: there are nvidia-
specific checks in 61-gdm.rules that are no longer guarded by a check
for nvidia hardware in the rules file (because the patch reversal in
42.0-1ubuntu4 removed that check).

As a workaround, you can edit  /lib/udev/rules.d/61-gdm.rules and

I was able to restore Wayland by simply commenting out the lines...

system when I edit /lib/udev/rules.d/61-gdm.

dark background with black text for HTML emails in the message preview.
Previously in Impish, the background was white with dark text.

This only occurs when using a dark theme, If you use a light theme, the
background of the email is also light.

I was happily using wayland so far on an Intel Tiger Lake laptop. Then I
did an upgrade, including upgrading gdm3 42.0-1ubuntu2 to 42.0-1ubuntu4,
rebooted, and got logged into an Xorg session.

Investigating, it seems this was caused by this patch, reverting in
manually locally fixes things: https://salsa.debian.org/gnome-
team/gdm/-/blob/ubuntu/master/debian/patches/data-Disable-wayland-on-
nvidia-if-suspend-is-broken.patch

Looking at the patch, it seems that the checks introduced by it are
nvidia-specific, but are applied to *all* other cards as well. There
used to be an nvidia-only check wrapping these checeks, but that was
reverted as part of 42.0-1ubuntu4 here: https://salsa.debian.org/gnome-
team/gdm/-/commit/e2f0cca51dd9638c5b2a74a9739539ef4fd427bd

I think this is a pretty urgent and issue. I haven't tested on multiple
machines, but AFAICS this will be unintentionally be disabling wayland
for a lot of people...

I can provide more hardware details, but I think the bug will be obvious
if you look at the resulting 61-gdm.rules file (here's an excerpt,
including some context around the nvidia checks to see they are
unguarded):

I perform apt update/upgrades almost daily on my system and today I
update/upgraded (mesa, gdm3, and gnome shell among other packages were
upgrade since my last upgrade on the 12th).

All wayland options have disappeared from my gdm3 login menu. I have
tried manually setting WaylandEnable=True in the config file  (it was
commented out previously and working fine) to no avail.

My system is pretty standard, its a amd RX 570 and intel igpu (UHD 630)
system with both gpus outputing to two separate monitors.

This might not be a gdm3 issue but it is likely an issue that occurred
in one of these packages since the 12th of April.

[Bug 1969243] Re: gdm 42.0-1ubuntu4 no longer shows Wayland option

gdm3 (42.0-1ubuntu4) breaks using Wayland on a X570 UD v1.1 motherboard
with 5600X processor and Nvidia GTX 1050 graphics card that worked
perfectly under gdm3 (42.0-1ubuntu2). I filed a bug against gdm3
(42.0-1ubuntu4) while it was in proposed updates but the bug report was
ignored and gdm3 (42.0-1ubuntu4) got pushed into the development release
anyway.

Description: 
When I scroll on the dock to change workspaces, it displays the new OSD for 
switching a workspace, but the white circles that display the current workspace 
are shown on a dark gray and the OSD's animation is missing. 

What should happen:
The OSD should display the correct animation you would see if you type 
Super/Win + Alt + Left/Right Arrow
Or no OSD at all. 

Replicate it: 
Scroll on dock.

When I outright delete /lib/udev/rules.d/61-gdm.rules it also works
normally again with 42.0-1ubuntu4, so the problem is with one of the
udev rules.

When ubuntu-dock is set to autohide and in hidden state (happens on panel and 
dock mode) 
When you go to right-click an icon to access its menu, the dock hides again and 
the menu stays open but when you click it the menu updates its position to be 
closer to the dock, leading to miss clicks and a worse user experience. 

What should happen: 
The dock should stay visible while you interact with the menu. 

Replicate it: 
Set your dock to autohide and then, trigger the autohide (like maximizing a 
window), reach for one of the icons and right-click it.

For me, gdm3 42.0-1ubuntu4 breaks Wayland entirely. There is no option
to select a session left when logging in, and when I enter my password
and press enter I'm left in an X11 session.

I only have machines with Intel graphics.

Reverting to 42.0-1ubuntu2 makes it work normally again (defaults to
Wayland, with an option to select "Ubuntu on Xorg").

After updating gdm3 from 42.0-1ubuntu2 to 42.0-1ubuntu4 in jammy, it no
longer shows any sessions in the bottom-right corner. When I log in, I
am dropped into an X11 session, with no way to switch to Wayland.

Downgrading the gdm3, gir1.2-gdm-1.0 and libgdm1 packages to
42.0-1ubuntu2 or 42.0-1ubuntu3 restores the option to select sessions
and defaults to Wayland again.

Looking at the changelog:

gdm3 (42.0-1ubuntu4) jammy; urgency=medium

  * Drop patch disabling Wayland on hybrid laptops using Nvidia's drivers.
It's not needed for Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (LP: #1968809)

I had to downgrade to gdm3_42.0-1ubuntu2_amd64 to fix blank screen after
boot. RTX2060 running on nvidia 510.60.02. When gdm3 actually starts
with working image there's no problem logging in to a wayland session.

Something's (jelly)fishy with todays 42.0-1ubuntu4 update for me too.
X11 only, no Wayland option which has been working well for the last
couple of weeks. I'm on a Thinkpad with Intel UHD Graphics 620, which at
some point had a nVidia eGPU connected to it -- though not recently due
to the several known external screen issues. Suggested workaround #4 and
#9 fixed it for me, but I've also found myself having to set
"WaylandEnable=true" in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf otherwise the dual-screens
don't scale right.

While this might sound as fishy, I hit the same problem, but my laptop
is NOT with NVIDIA hardware ; it's a ThinkPad P14s Gen 2 AMD, with an
AMD GPU. I had to reboot over the last few days and got no issue, until
I rebooted one hour ago and got stuck on X11 instead of Wayland. After I
found about that bug report and commented around the lines mentionned in
comment #4, I could get back Wayland working.

Yes, Menno, this is a regression in that Ubuntu 21.10 enabled Wayland
for Nvidia and Ubuntu 22.04 now does not.

An issue was identified with suspend not working for GNOME requirements.
Once the Nvidia drivers are updated to fix that issue in a future stable
release update, Wayland should be available again.

Is it possible a regression has occurred? Right now I do not have the
possibility to select Wayland when using the nVidia 5.10 drivers. I only
can use X11? I was using Wayland without major problems, but after
updating I can only use X11.

I got the gdm3 package version 42.0-1ubuntu4 and still don't get Wayland. I 
troubleshot and found the problem in the file /lib/udev/rules.d/61-gdm.rules in 
the following lines:
IMPORT{program}="/bin/sh -c \"sed -e 's/: /=/g' -e 
's/\([^[:upper:]]\)\([[:upper:]]\)/\1_\2/g' -e 's/[[:lower:]]/\U&/g' -e 
's/^/NVIDIA_/' /proc/driver/nvidia/params\""
ENV{NVIDIA_PRESERVE_VIDEO_MEMORY_ALLOCATIONS}!="1", GOTO="gdm_disable_wayland"
If I comment that Wayland appears as an option in GDM.
I had to create a file /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-hack.conf with the follow content:
options nvidia NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1
This theoretically enable the option to preserve video memory allocations, but 
still getting the option as "1", still don't enable Wayland.

I believe Canonical is going to work on getting suspend working for the
Nvidia drivers as required by GNOME for Wayland support. That will be a
future stable release update for 22.04 LTS.

Sounds like Mozilla is doing the right thing, just the timing is
inconvenient for jammy.

It doesn't hurt live sessions because those are Xorg anyway. But after
you install, if Firefox is still using Xwayland for Wayland sessions
then you will see Firefox has:

  * Slower frame rates

Verified fixed in daily image 20220415:
gnome-shell = 42.0-2ubuntu1

No crash anymore. Although the transition into the live session is still
ugly; it goes slowly with VT text visible in between.

I try the fix in #16 with the following command on XPS 9320, the result
looks good to me.

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kcshieh/verification
$ sudo apt install libmutter-10-0 mutter-common gir1.2-mutter-10
$ sudo reboot
