[Bug 2013216] Re: Single click on title bar does not transfer focus to target window (server side decorations in Xorg sessions)

2023-06-02 Thread Bill
about firefox it has a custom titlebar - the UI packs the tabs on the
titlebar in order to save screen space. google chrome is the same and
also an exception to the bug.

about the snap, it appear to have permission structures involving UI-
related middleware (I am guessing), so fixing the interactive user UI
session may have left the middleware unfixed/inconsistent?

[Bug 2000022] [NEW] app icon highlighting is glitched when a file is opened in the file explorer

2022-12-18 Thread Bill Gan
Public bug reported:

When I open a text file in Files with an application that has not been
added to favorites, the app highlighting (white rounded rectangle around
the icon) is glitched.

For example, I have attached a screenshot showing the app highlighting
when I open a text file from files without having 'gedit' added to
favorites. The gedit icon in the dock is glitched. Other app icons will
also glitch in this way.

[Bug 1998680] [NEW] The latest update to xdg-desktop-portal causes caja plugins to throw thousands of errors filling the syslog

2022-12-03 Thread Bill Miller
Public bug reported:

After updates this month to my Ubuntu 20.04 system running MATE desktop
with snapd removed.

I noticed CPU utilization was up 25% constantly and the syslog was
filled with errors from caja plugins.

I did a timeshift restore to 11/30 and then did updates one by one. The
culprit is xdg-desktop-portal. I removed it from my system and the
problems stopped.

Apparently this package serves no purpose on a system that does not used
snapd or flatpak anyway.

As a patch, is there way that the "r" command could be automatically
issued at the end of the boot sequence? I briefly tried to get that to
work, but didn't have any luck.

[Bug 1936953] [NEW] evince no longer renders grayscale DjVu docs

2021-07-20 Thread Bill Yikes
Public bug reported:

Evince used to have no problem showing a grayscale djvu file. Version
3.22.1 was fine. Now evince version 3.38.2 presents an error: 'Unable to
open document "grayscale_sample.djvu". File type DjVu image
(image/gnd.djvu) is not supported.' Now evince can only render bilevel
DjVu images.

To reproduce, start with a grayscale *.pgm file. Use ImageMagick if
needed to obtain one, as follows:

$ convert logo: sample_grayscale.pgm

Convert to djvu:

$ c44 sample_grayscale.pgm sample_grayscale.djvu

Finally:

$ evince sample_grayscale.djvu

(broken)

Another lazy way around this is to do Alt-F2, then type in R. Might be
easier than creating a folder then deleting it.

[Bug 1916341] [NEW] poppler-utils/pdfimages list function names the wrong color in output table

2021-02-20 Thread Bill Yikes
Public bug reported:

When running:

$ pdfimages -list grayscale-document.pdf

the output is:

```
   page   num  type   width height color comp bpc  enc interp  object ID x-ppi
y-ppi size ratio
  1 0 image2556  3288  rgb 3   8  jpeg   no 7  0   301
```

"rgb" is incorrect, which is evident after running: 'pdfimages -all -f 1
-l 1 grayscale-document.pdf foo && identify -format "%[type]"
foo-000.jpg', which correctly outputs "Grayscale".

Strangely, when "pdfimages -list" is fed a bilevel document, it states
that every page has color "gray".

[Bug 1888712] [NEW] Did : apt purge evolution* and the next boot has no GUI

2020-07-23 Thread Bill Gradwohl
Public bug reported:

I'm sending this from a working machine. The report is for a box that
now has no GUI.

I tried to get rid of evolution by :
apt purge evolution*
which was successful. Worked the rest of the day without issues.

The next morning, the GUI won't load - there's no GUI login screen.

Using terminal, journalctl show nothing of significance. Trying to
startx fails. I took a photo of that output and is attached.

Could the GUI dependencies be missing something?

[Bug 1877434] Re: Slow Gnome 3.36 overall experience

2020-05-11 Thread Bill Niakas
Of course, my apologies.

While i was researching the i noticed that i had a failed service
(systemctl --failed). The failed service was upower and when i tried to
restart/stop/disable it i was getting errors. The removal of the package
upower resulted to removal of gnome desktop. Reinstalling gnomr desktop
didn't fix the problem. Only after seeing the output of

ldd usr/lib/upower/upowerd

i noticed that there was a missing library which i found it in the file
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/libu/libusbmuxd/libusbmuxd4_1.0.10-2_amd64.deb

[Bug 1877434] Re: Slow Gnome 3.36 overall experience

2020-05-10 Thread Bill Niakas
As it appears the problem persisted. The problem was in the upower
service and i managed to fix it by installing the file containing the
missing libusbmuxd.so.4 file from
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/libu/libusbmuxd/libusbmuxd4_1.0.10-2_amd64.deb

Now everything works as it should

Same for me also, except :1.13. Evolution worked for several days but

I also sometimes get an associated error of:

[Bug 1798790] Re: Ubuntu login screen sometimes doesn't appear on a single GPU Nvidia system (and setting WaylandEnable=false fixes it)

2019-10-02 Thread Bill Wilken
I will try the Wayland parameter option, but for what it's worth, the
only way I've been able to recover so far is to boot off a USB thumb
drive, mount my actual boot drive, download and run boot-repair. When I
reboot, I finally get a grub menu and can institute the usual menu-
driven repairs from there. The full boot-repair report can be found at
https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/34RRkD365G/.

[Bug 1839544] Re: power setting "display off" maximum is 15 minutes, used to have several hour increment values

2019-08-28 Thread Bill Turner, wb4alm
This should be a very simple thing to fix. And if I knew "C" I would fix it
myself.
but I don't, my knowledge base is in many other computer programming languages
that date all the way back to the 1960's. While I still program computers,
now-a-days they are primarily a tool to be used in solving other problems...

In my opinion, the best long term fix would be to provide a "[ ] other" box
with a way to allow entering the actual idle time desired -- then a user can
set it to what ever their circumstances dictates.

unfortunately, The concept of "keyboard idle" is not necessarily the
best indication of an "unattended terminal". and the futuristic concept
of tracking eyeball movements to see if anybody is actually looking at
the screen, would probably not be acceptable to most humans.

"15 min" of no keyboard/mouse movement is too short a time period, especially
when the screen is being used to display reference material.

"never" is too long, especially when you need to keep user specific
background processes running - or I would simply logoff and log back on
later.

(One would hope that the user selectable "idle time" values are being
translated internally to some form of seconds or minutes, and that they
are not simply used to set a series of "bit switches", thus my
suggestion to provide a text entry box.)

I would also like to suggest that most folks use a computer to solve
real world problems, and that computers exist primarily as a tool to be
used, and not just as just programming exercises

Thank you.

[Bug 1839544] [NEW] power setting "display off" maximum is 15 minutes, used to have several hour increment values

2019-08-08 Thread Bill Turner, wb4alm
Public bug reported:

Just upgraded to Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS from Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

In the POWER settings for blanking the display, there used to be several
options that allowed selecting a time interval of 1 hour, 2 hours, 4
hours, etc.

Under Ubuntu 18.04.2 there are only 9 selectable time values:
i.e. 1 min, 2 min, 3 min, 4 min, 5 min, 8 min, 10 min, 12 min, 15 minutes, and
never.

This might be fine for a portable laptop running on batteries, but is
not acceptable for a desktop system.

The never option is not good, because then the monitor NEVER goes dark.

My preferred time is to set this to 1-hour because of the length of conference
calls.
It is a real nuisance to have the screen blank on you while you are reading
information displayed on the screen to a multi-person conference call...
...Especially if you lock your screen, requiring you to log back on.

I suggest adding some of the time values back to the pull down list, or
possibly adding a "other" fill-in value box where the user can specify
in minutes when he wants the screen to blank when idle.

I consider this to be a bug, and not a feature enhancement, because I
used to be able to say "1 hour".

[Bug 1299604] Re: evolution keeps asking for password

2015-07-14 Thread Bill Werner
SIMPLE solution for me at least...

Open Passwords Keys
Right Click Gnome Storage (select Unlock when logged in)

Evo may ask for password at start, but seems to store and work normal
now. EVEN after reboot.

Caveat: instructions aren't precise; once 'unlock when logged on' is
chosen, options appear to disappear... (only allows lock, unlock).

Hope makes sense to all.

[Bug 1407694] [NEW] Gmail webapp stops working and can't recover

2015-01-05 Thread Bill Filler
Public bug reported:

ubuntu-rtm image 184 on Krillin

Was using the phone a lot during the break and experienced Gmail getting
into a state where it would launch and have a white screen. You could
not recover even after killing and restarting the app. This happened
mulitple times. I believe the online account service possibly is getting
killed by the OOM killer and trying to launch Gmail after this occurs
does not work.

If this is the case, we should a) try to not let account service be
killed by oom killer and b) recover gracefully if the service is not
running and still allow the app to be launced.

Steps to reproduce:
1) setup online account for Google and Gmail
2) unplug the phone from USB
3) launch gmail webapp and a lot of other apps
4) kill gmail but leave other apps running
5) use the phone for a while and let it suspend for a while (5-10 minutes)
6) try and launch gmail and you get a blank white screen, see the log below.
7) kill and restart gmail with the same error

The only way I could make it work again was to delete the online account
or reboot

[Bug 1339016] Re: Initial sync of the calendar takes a prohibitive amount of time

2014-11-22 Thread Bill Filler
We were able to improve the situation by limiting how far in the past to
sync for calendar events. This was a combination of a new version of
syncevolution, and a patch to it and sync-monitor to introduce a
syncInterval configuration setting (defaults to 90 days) specifiying
how many days in the past to go back when syncing. For my caledar, it
used to take 20 minutes for initial sync. Now it takes 33 seconds! Will
need testing by others but this seems to help greatly.

[Bug 1387939] [NEW] After minimizing while viewing usb drive, nautilus opens new Home window

2014-10-30 Thread Bill Sheridan
Public bug reported:

This odd behavior started immediately after upgrading to Ubuntu 14.04

I'll do a step-by-step to clarify:

Open Nautilus from Launcher
Browse to any folder on local hard drive
Minimize Nautilus
Click on Nautilus on the Launcher again, and it returns to where I was.. All is
well.

Open Nautilus from Launcher
Browser to external usb hard drive (I have a WD MyBook 500GB)
Minimize Nautilus
Click on Nautilus on the Launcher Again - It opens a new window to the Home
folder
If I click on Nautilus again, it then opens the miniturized view of all open
Nautilus windows, and then I can pick my exteral hard drive window.

Same results from a 7GB thumb drive
It works correctly while browsing a second internal hard drive

[Bug 1369472] Re: camera-app often hangs for 15 to 30 seconds on start

2014-10-14 Thread Bill Filler
The camera-app has been modified to only try to connect to location
service when needed. That is, when user switches on the location setting
in the app, rather than at startup.

I am closing out the camera portion of the bug. The remaining issues
involve the location service itself, not the camera app. Leaving that
task open for tvoss.

[Bug 1375896] [NEW] location not working reliably in browser or webapps

2014-09-30 Thread Bill Filler
Public bug reported:

krillin build 72
- I have not wiped my phone in quite a while but instead have been doing OTA
updates
- I manually re-ran the setup wizard to ensure the HERE location stuff was
enabled, which it is
- reboot the phone

I launch Google Maps webapp and it tells me Your location could not be
determined. I try this repeatedly over the course of many minutes with
the same results.

I do the same with HERE maps webapp and I get the same message.

I run OSMtouch app and it is able to locate me. I do get a popup saying
No GPS available. Position is approximate but the location on the map
is roughly accurate.

[Bug 1342123] Re: evolution-calendar-factory always running with high memory usage

2014-09-22 Thread Bill Filler
To clarify, out of the box on krillin with no calendar sync even
enabled, evolution-calendar-factory uses 32MB which is the 4th highest
process in memory usage. This is with an empty database of no calendar
events or alarms.

I'm assuming evolution-calendar-factory gets loaded by indicator-
datetime initially such that the indicator can show calendar events.

If you have a large database of calendar entries (i.e. after you've done
a google calendar sync), as Pat reported this process can grow to well
over 100MB. It seems to have no upper bound, and since the evolution
backend for calendar is simply a flat file of type .ics, e-c-f appears
to load the entire file into memory.

e-c-f really needs a sqlite backend or something such that it can manage
it more efficiently. Someone needs to investigate what can be done in
the short term reduce the memory usage if possible.

[Bug 1339016] Re: Initial sync of the calendar takes a prohibitive amount of time

2014-09-22 Thread Bill Filler
We use syncevolution, which communicates with Google on the remote side
and evolution-data-server on the local side to store events. There is no
API in syncevolution to limit the scope of events retrieved. We need to
look into modifying it to do so, and to optimize it's operational time
as it's ridiculously slow (this in part is likely due to evolution-
calendar-factory using a flat file to store the calendar events).

Renato has indicated there is a newer version of syncevolution which has
recently been released that may improve the situation. The next step is
to try this new version and see if it helps.

[Bug 1182658] Re: Location services not working in Google Maps

2013-09-20 Thread Bill Filler
still not working in browser on 09.20.13 build. The browser now prompts
that location is being requested, and after pressing Allow neither
site mentioned was able to return the location. I see a process called
service get launched and sometimes max the cpu.

[Bug 321720]

2013-07-10 Thread Bill-freedesktop-org-bugzilla
James, can you define the deficiencies in the spec linked from comment
#9 so that we can understand which parts of XFA still need to be
documented?

[Bug 1170344] [NEW] gksu nautilus doesn't recognise my password

2013-04-18 Thread Bill O'Dwyer
Public bug reported:

My password contains % and #, and it works perfectly well everywhere else,
except for when I run the command gksu nautilus
I tried altering the keystrokes in accordance with where everything would be on
a US keyboard, but still no joy. Every time it just says that the password was
incorrect.

I'm using Ubuntu 13.04 beta

Re: [Bug 903422] Re: Ubuntu does not work with Samsung Galaxy phones ( Unable to open raw device 0)

2013-01-17 Thread Bill Strosberg
Works fine without noticeable issues with Galaxy SIII. Will test with a
couple of my Android development tablets (Galaxy Tab, Lepan, etc.) and
report back.

Great work getting this one wrestled down and fixed. Be nice to have
the Ubuntu maintainers push this out to the rest of the world, as 90% of
the people using Ubuntu never put enough effort in to find out how to
fix things.

[Bug 885989] Re: white screen on second monitor when using two xsessions

2013-01-09 Thread Bill Turner, wb4alm
I agree with Paul, I do not understand why this still has not been
fixed.

Multiple screen support worked in Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10, and does not now work
in Ubuntu 11.xx or Ubuntu 12.xx

(I am currently on Ubuntu 12.10, would have prefered to stay on 12.04 LTS, but
other issues with 12.04.1 forced me to upgrade to 12.10)

Since I am accustomed to being able to run separate X screens, (one
screen was a single 1024x768, and the other screen was a triple
1440x900) running on a dual head display card) --- being restricted to
two SINGLE monitors running in twinview has severely affected my
productivity.

While I am a software and systems developer, I do not program in C,
so I am not comfortable or knowlegable in how to patch files and
recompile them under Linux --- and cannot afford to lose my system again
for weeks on end like what happened with the upgrade to 12.04.1.
