Re: [Bug 220226] Re: Screen briefly appears after suspend despite lock

2009-10-04 Thread DaveAbrahams
I don't know. Switched to mac in part because of this dynamic: I go to
the trouble to report a bug; it gets confirmed, but nobody addresses
it so months or years later I am asked if it's present in some newer
version (or even a prerelease!) and the bug is marked incomplete.
Unless I'm willing to keep on top of the status of all the problems I
report in some bleeding-edge version, the bug gets no further
attention and lives on forever.

You tell me. It's not a symptom but a complaint about the
documentation. Do the docs for g-p-m now give a precise definition of
"idle?"

[Bug 220657] Re: reduce backlight brightness / dim display when idle

2009-02-05 Thread DaveAbrahams
Yes, it's still an issue.

The first piece of work to be done on the bug is to fix the
documentation:

* fill in the missing details about the intended behavior of this interface.
* explain what "dimming" really means
* Fix the screenshots

Once that's done, maybe we have a hope of seeing whether the
functionality conforms to the specification.

I think the duplicate status /may/ be wrong. That other bug has been

Although its status is currently "new," there's no explanation why. It
is not entirely clear that it's the same bug and it's especially not

[Bug 310833] [NEW] gnome-power-manager interface confusing (and undocumented)

2008-12-23 Thread DaveAbrahams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

I know there are at least several levels of display sleep (available
through xset) and the interface doesn't tell me which one(s) I'm going
to get. Is this the full power saving I really want, or some
intermediate state, or what? Also, the "Set display brightness to:"
sliders have an unclear effect. Just when does that brightness setting
take place? Is it part of g-p-m's notion of "display sleep?" What does
"Dim display when idle" do exactly? How long does the computer have to
be idle before dimming begins? Is the display supposed to undim when I
start using the computer again?

The answers to at least some of these questions should be self-evident
from looking at the UI, but they are not.

No, not necessarily. I want PM to start by defining what it means by
"sleep!" All of the labels in the UI and text in the documentation is
vague at best about what the thing is actually supposed to be doing.

My feature request is specifically that PM offer the ability to have the
monitor power down after a certain period of inactivity. Ideally it
would be possible to have the screensaver run for some period, for
entertainment purposes, but then shut off and power down the monitor
after a bit. LCD monitors come back almost instantly, so it isn't

Sorry, I can't see how that's relevant. Besides GPM does let me do both

No, I'm not saying they're unclear; I'm saying they're **useless** and
**incorrect**. I don't mean to be strident, but please re-read my
message again. Seriously, they show pictures of UI elements that don't
exist in reality, and most of the little text that is there has the
semantic value equivalent of adding the comment: "increment i" to a a
line of 'C' that reads "++i", which is to say no value at all.

> I would re submit this with a detailed description of what you would
> like to see and attach this bug to Ubuntu-docs package.

This is really disappointing. I understand that in the open source
world we all have to contribute (and I do), but here you are asking a
user for more than a complete suggestion or even a bugfix. You are
essentially asking me to do the entire documentation job, including
taking screenshots, myself. Even that wouldn't be so unreasonable, but I
have just told you that the documentation doesn't make it clear what
this interface does! So you want me to read the source code, figure out
what it does, divine the original intention of the authors with respect
to the functionality, and document that? I'm sorry, no. That is the
maintainers' responsibility.

[Bug 308815] [NEW] Display sleep settings are bogus

2008-12-16 Thread DaveAbrahams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Note: this bug also affects gnome-screensaver-preferences

Problem: none of the built-in GUI controls allow a user to turn off monitors to
save power after a certain amount of idle time.
Ancillary problem: the interface is confusing and effectively undocumented.

This is primarily a gnome-power-manager problem, but the story starts
with gnome-screensaver-preferences. There's a screensaver called "blank
screen" there. If I select and activate that screensaver, after the
time elapses, one of my two monitors begins a gradual dimming
progression. The other one stays on full blast. When the dimming
finally finishes, the monitor that was getting dimmer immediately comes
back to full brightness. So, although arguably, it should be, that is
clearly not a way to save power.

gnome-screensaver-preferences has a "Power Management" button that leads
to gnome-power-manager. Obviously *that* is the way to turn off
monitors and save power, right? Wrong; the "put display to sleep"
controls have no effect at all. The display never goes to sleep. In
fact, most of the problems described in
http://www.shallowsky.com/linux/x-screen-blanking.html (written for
Gutsy!) seem to persist to this day, although "xset dpms force off" does
work for me.

Coming back around to gnome-screensaver-preferences, at the end of
http://www.shallowsky.com/linux/x-screen-blanking.html, they explain why
perhaps all such power management *should* really be handled through a
screensaver and not through g-p-m.

On to the confusing and undocumented interface: First, I know there are
at least several levels of display sleep (available through xset) and
the interface doesn't tell me which one(s) I'm going to get. Is this
the full power saving I really want, or some intermediate state, or
what? Also, the "Set display brightness to:" sliders have an unclear
effect. Just when does that brightness setting take place? Is it part
of g-p-m's notion of "display sleep?" What does "Dim display when idle"
do exactly? How long does the computer have to be idle before dimming
begins? Is the display supposed to undim when I start using the
computer again? The "Gnome Power Manager Manual" that you reach through
the "Help" button is totally useless; all it shows are pictures of the
UI with no explanation. In fact, the pictures don't even match the
actual UI (e.g. they contain a "Computer Speed Policy" menu that doesn't
appear in the actual g-p-m UI). I know I reported some of these doc
issues against a previous Ubuntu release; it's very frustrating to see
that things have, if anything, gotten worse.

I think the problems are way deeper than lack of intuitiveness. Most or all of
the problems described in
http://www.shallowsky.com/linux/x-screen-blanking.html seem to still be present

Fundamentally, if there's a bug, it's that the g-p-m "put display to sleep"
controls give the impression that they can be used to save power, but they just
don't do anything. I'm filing a new bug on that issue and will reference it in

[Bug 220383] Re: contents of /etc/acpi/suspend.d ignored

2008-05-13 Thread DaveAbrahams
It's just broken. /etc/default/acpi-support, if it has any effect at
all, can't have all the effects it purports to. For example,
DOUBLE_CONSOLE_SWITCH is activated by one of the /etc/acpi/resume.d
scripts. Really, I appreciate all the work that's done gratis to make
Ubuntu great, but I think this is a serious problem. It's bad enough to
break backward compatibility without providing a transition path, but to
leave the old stuff lying around and yet non-operational seems
irresponsible. People will think existing instructions and their
dapper/edgy/feisty/gutsy tweaks work, but they don't.

[Bug 224237] [NEW] magically accumulating batteries

2008-04-29 Thread DaveAbrahams

I have only one battery in my ThinkPad T60p, but as you can see from the
attached screenshot, the number reported by g-p-m's applet keeps
growing!

[Bug 93281] Re: "Suspend failed" message gives false advice

2008-04-27 Thread DaveAbrahams
The bug is a bad error message; it's still in Hardy. It's surprising
that the response to a documentation bug report with contains a
suggested fix is "is this still an issue for you in the latest release?"
It would have been easy to check the source, as Matthew Paul Thomas did
in this ticket.

I don't mean to be rude, but just fix the error message, please.

2008-04-22 Thread DaveAbrahams
I take my second comment back; /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/* are not

1. I stand by my initial statement that /etc/acpi/suspend.d/* are

2. the usual tricks one uses to run X applications as the X user

[Bug 220657] [NEW] reduce backlight brightness / dim display when idle

2008-04-22 Thread DaveAbrahams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

These options are unexplained in documentation and it's not even clear
that they work as intended. If you choose "help" from the g-p-m menu,
you'll see screenshots that don't show these options in the "On Batter
Power" tab. It's unclear what the difference is between reducing the
backlight brightness and dimming the display, and when I make the
transition from AC to battery the display is dimmed once. I never see
any idle dimming. There's no description of how long I have to leave
the computer alone before it is considered "idle". When I click "reduce
backlight brightness" there is no perceivable effect.

I'm fairly certain there's a functionality bug here, but it's hard to
tell because there's certainly a documentation bug. Any behavior at all
short of a crash could be considered legitimate when the features aren't
documented!

I'm using Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 with all the latest updates.

If more info is needed, please ask.

[Bug 220232] [NEW] fgrlx+compiz+FireGL v5200/v5250 => 100% cpu after resume

2008-04-21 Thread DaveAbrahams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

The combination of certain ATI chipsets plus compiz yields 100% cpu in
Xorg after resume on Hardy. See
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/197209 for some details. Filed
here against g-p-m because someone in that thread considered the 100%

[Bug 220226] [NEW] Screen briefly appears after suspend despite lock

2008-04-21 Thread DaveAbrahams
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

When I suspend my Dell Inspiron 9300 using the ATI Mobility Radeon x300
with fglrx, and then resume it, before the password dialog appears, I
can briefly see the screen exactly as it was before I initiated the
suspend. Given that screen lock is intended to protect the machine's
owner from unauthorized access to information, it seems like this is a
security vulnerability.

[Bug 43363] Re: network: should list NFS shares too

2008-03-13 Thread DaveAbrahams
Quoting from the thread referenced above at
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=421182 :

Files, Folders and Documents
Working with files
6.11. Navigating Remote Servers
6.11.2 To access network places

Quote:
If your system is configured to access places on a network, you can use the
file manager to access the
network places.

To access network places, open the file manager and choose Places →
Network Servers. A window opens that displays the network places that
you can access. Double-click on the network that you want to access.

To access UNIX shares, double-click on the Unix Network (NFS) object. A
list of the UNIX shares available to you is displayed in the file
manager window.

To access Windows shares, double-click on the Windows Network (SMB) object. A
list of the Windows shares available to you is displayed in the file manager

[Bug 43363] Re: network: should list NFS shares too

2008-03-12 Thread DaveAbrahams
In my opinion there's no way this should be marked invalid. As
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=421182 describes, the
documentation clearly states that you can browse NFS shares through the
GUI. If you don't want to implement that right now, that's fine, but
then this should be considered a valid documentation bug.
