[Bug 678201] [NEW] nautlius lockup with jpg-named svgs referring to svgs
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus To reproduce: 1. Create a directory /home/ceb/Desktop/iwj 2. Put the files from the attached tarball into it 3. Open the directory in Nautilus 4. Double-click on outline3.jpg Observed behaviour: nautilus locks up; this window and all other file manager windows become unresponsive. Recovery is possible by running "killall nautilus" in a terminal window. Expected behaviour: the file is opened with image viewer. Note that outline[23].jpg are actually svgs. I don't know whether that is related to the problem. Bugs 305546 and 409409 seem to be related to this one. I doubt that nautilus itself is actually at fault. It plays the audio almost perfectly but it has slight difficulty because it is spending a lot of the machine's power on the pretty swirling things it wants to use to fill in the otherwise-black video window. The swirls also quickly become jerky and obviously it is having trouble These kind of effects should not be enabled if the machine does not have the power to display them properly. After the install (whole disk, LVM, crypto) is completed I found that: When I ask it to open an application, while it's thinking about it, the mouse pointer jitters. This happens only if I move the mouse while the machine is thinking about the new application. It is as if the mouse, as I move it, sporadically and very temporarily leaps back to the location it had a few instants previously. The effect seems to happen whenever I put the machine under a bit of strain by asking it to do something and then expect to use the mouse while it's thinking. [Bug 151006] resizing "collection" window icon growth strangeness
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: rhythmbox To reproduce: 1. Install gutsy 20071009 i386 d-i (in Dutch with UK keyboard, but I will translate menu entries) 2. Applications / Audio and video / Rhythmbox 3. Resize the window horizontally to take up a bit more of the screen, but leave some space below it. 4. Grab the divider (left-click and drag) between the "Collection" etc. navigation area at the left and the main playlist area at the right and drag it to the right. 5. Notice that the picture of a CD at the bottom of the window grows. It will grow to a stupendous size. When it gets too large to fit the whole application window grows vertically to allow it to be accomodated. 6. After this it is tedious to put things back to normal because the bottom edge of the Rhythmbox window is off the bottom of the screen. IMO the size of this graphic should be limited, and in any case it should never be allowed to determine the size of the application's main window. If there isn't vertical room for it it should be shrunk, truncated, or omitted. ** Affects: rhythmbox (Ubuntu) Importance: Low Assignee: Ubuntu Desktop Bugs (desktop-bugs) Status: Triaged -- resizing "collection" window icon growth strangeness https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/151006 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 134293] open with rhythmbox is confusing
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: rhythmbox I installed gutsy i386 d-i 20070823 for testing. After some other tests, I navigated with nautilus to Examples and tried to play "ubuntu Sax.ogg". Other methods not working, I tried right-click and selected ``Openen met "Rhythmbox muziekspeler"'' (``Open with "Rhythmbox music player"''). This produces a music player window which doesn't seem to have the file in question anywhere obvious. Pressing "play" has no useful effect. If Rhythmbox is capable of just playing files from the filesystem then when you use "open with" to do so it should work. On the other hand if it insists on pratting about with a library and other confusingness, it ought not to be offered in "open with". ** Affects: rhythmbox (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- open with rhythmbox is confusing https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/134293 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for rhythmbox in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Even logging out on the client and C-A-Backspace-killing the X server, and logging in again, produced a session where [Door icon] / Logout would hang. I was able to rescue my account by deleting all of my dotfiles and removing and recreating ~/Desktop. After that, the system worked normally for me again. [Bug 99038] Re: Redraw trouble
I have reproduced this with a feisty install made from the i386 d-i rc cd 20070415 on my main testbed system. If there's any other information you'd like please let me know. The client is feisty's gnome-terminal as above, with ssh to chiark.greenend.org.uk (a very very old Debian install currently running sarge) with inside that a copy of ircII. NB that this is definitely not, or at least not solely, a termcap problem. Observe in Tom's screenshot that the display is not a sane representation of any character grid. Also, when other windows are moved over the faulty gnome-terminal, and then away, the display refresh thereby caused fixes the corruption. ** Changed in: vte (Ubuntu) Status: Unconfirmed => Confirmed -- Redraw trouble https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/99038 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 105563] usb stick not mounted after hibernate
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: hal Using a hard disk install made from the i386 livecd 20070411: I inserted a USB stick containing a few jpgs. This worked fine and produced an appropriate nautilus window. I left this window open and did some other unrelated tests. After I'd finished the other tests I asked the machine to hibernate (with the dialogue from the top-right corner power icon) - still with the nautilus window open and the usb stick inserted. When the machine had hibernated, I restarted it (with the usb stick still inserted). [Bug 105560] confusing window placement eg for "Help"
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus During tests of an install made from the i386 20070411 livecd: I had oo.o open visiting a text document. This occupied approximately the centre third (by area) of my 1280x1024 display. I selected "Help / OpenOffice.org Help" from the Writer menu. Yelp started as expected. However, Yelp's window was exactly the same size, shape and location as OpenOffice.org's. This made it look very much like the help was a function of oo.o; a user might try to get back to their program by selecting "Back" (which won't work) and might be scared to click "close" in the window frame thinking that this was their document. Nautilus's window placement algorithm ought to do better in this case. If any of the oo.o window had been left showing then the confusion would not arise. ** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- confusing window placement eg for "Help" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/105560 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for nautilus in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 105510] hardware database notification has poor ui
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: notification-daemon When I boot the livecd (20070411 i386), I get a notification bubble at the right hand side, coming out of the lightbulb, which says "information about newly installed packages is available" and suggests that I click on the icon. When I click on the icon, I get a window in the middle of the screen with the legend at the top "Update information", containing text headed "Ubuntu Hardware Database" with some extensive discussion and a button labelled "Run this action now". This is all really very poor useability: * The notification bubble is wrong in itself because I have not installed any packages. What is the computer talking about ? It doesn't make any sense. This text is also wrong because the thing that it's trying to tell me is nothing to do with "packages". (It is true that the notification was caused internally by a package, but since the whole operatng system consists of packages this is meaningless.) The text in the notification bubble should be reworded. * It is not entirely clear which icon is meant. I had to peer at the screen slightly to see which icon the bubble was coming out of. (I have good eyesight but was sitting well away from the display and had to lean across slightly; someone with less good eyesight might have to peer intently or just be confused.) An additional cue should be provided (eg, text saying to click on the lightbulb icon, or an edge to the bubble which contrasts better with the desktop and top panel backgrounds). * The window that appears when I click on the icon has no window title in the titlebar. Instead the title "Update information" is inside the window. * The phrase "Update information" is confusing. Does it mean that I should be updating some information ? (I happen to know that it means that there is some information by from with or pertaining to an update but as previously discussed this is both irrelevant to the user and false.) * The button "Run this action now" should be labelled with a specific action. "Send hardware information" for example. * The two buttons "Run this action now" and "Close" are opposites and should be uniformly placed rather than one "inside" the other. They are the two alternative ways to dismiss the window. * The actual running text in the dialogue box is weirdly worded and should be reworded by a native English speaker with a strong political bent. ** Affects: notification-daemon (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed ** Affects: notification-daemon (Ubuntu Feisty) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- hardware database notification has poor ui https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/105510 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for notification-daemon in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Possibiltiies which occur to me include: * Store the thumbnails in a tmpfs. If we had encrypted swap (which we really ought to have anyway) then that would pretty much solve the privacy problem with not too much loss of performance. * Store the thumbnails in the same directory as the images themselves (and automatically prune old thumbnails). This has much better privacy properties but it may not be trivial to do on non-sane filesystems. Another problem is that removeable flash media (often used for image storage) tend to be rather slow and also wear out faster if you make `unnecessary' writes. * Encrypt each thumbnail with a key derived from the full file contents. This would need some careful design (of both crypto and surrounding machinery). Public bug reported: If on a new Ubuntu install I have a generic Ubuntu application open (eog is my most recent test case) and request Get Help Online, I get (subject to other bugs): 1. A new browser window containing a blank content area, underneath 2. A popup dialogue warning me that I have requested an encrypted page (!) 3. When I dismiss that dialogue, I get a rather useless "help and support options" page which promised that "soon" this page will contain support options. This assertion does not seem to have proven true. This is wrong because: 1. Requesting an encrypted page should not generate a warning (this is a firefox bug) 2. The page should not be encrypted anyway (this makes it less likely to work, slower, etc. etc.) (this is IMO a launchpad bug) 3. The prominence of the "Get Help Online" menu option suggests that something useful will happen when it's requested. This option should be disabled via some central switch somewhere until that is true. When offered the choice whether to "import" the photos, declined saying "ignore". 4. Browsed the contents of the memory card using the Nautilus file manager 5. Observed the image thumbnail which was visible in Nautilus 6. Opened the image in eog 7. Closed eog and the relevant nautilus windows 8. Selected "unmount volume" 9. Rebooted with the "Restart" option from the top-right-hand Quit button 10. While the computer was rebooting, removed the flash card 11. Observed that when the computer was rebooted and I had logged in, .thumbnails/normal/.png was a thumbnail of my image. Note that the computer here has silently made a record of what was on the flash card. Knowledgeable users can easily find this information and this poses a hazard to naive users of digital cameras. As discussed on IRC with seb128: I will change the firefox postinst to delete /usr/lib/firefox/components/compreg.dat (grumbling to stderr if it finds it). I don't think this will solve the problem - the file is being created by some other package's maintainer scripts, and that other package is probably a mozilla embedder, so it's quite likely that compreg.dat is created after firefox is upgraded. However, it may help in some cases and it will definitely make it easier to fix the problem when you don't know what it is - just reinstalling firefox will fix it. We will take a more serious approach to finding this problem in edgy+1, since it is evidently not just an issue with breezy/dapper. ** Changed in: firefox (Ubuntu) Target: None => ubuntu-6.10 ** Changed in: firefox (Ubuntu) Status: Needs Info => Confirmed -- firefox 1.4.99 upgrade still have compreg.dat, creates issue https://launchpad.net/bugs/30791 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 57205] MimeType values in .desktop files are not regexps
Public bug reported: DesktopEntry.py says: def getMimeType(self): return self.get('MimeType', list=True, type="regex") However, the MimeType field is not a regexp according to eg http://standards.freedesktop.org/desktop-entry-spec/0.9.5/ar01s07.html Callers will have to have been expecting to treat the result like a compiled re (eg, by calling .match). However, they are also entitled to look inside and see re.pattern and some callers (eg, gnome-app-install) know that there is this lack of quoting bug in pygtk So there is no good answer to this. Perhaps it would be best to invent a getMimeTypeStringList and deprecate the old method. There are some cryptic comments in DesktopEntry.py relating to deprecation of MimeType. To reproduce at least one of the symptoms: gnome-app-install --mime-type=text/vndXwapYwml and observe that an XML editor is offered when in fact no application should be found. Note that the fix should arrange that gnome-app-install and then typing text/vnd.wap.wml into the search box should still find the XML editor. ** Affects: pygtk (Ubuntu) Importance: Untriaged Status: Unconfirmed -- MimeType values in .desktop files are not regexps https://launchpad.net/bugs/57205 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
