[Bug 1967037] [NEW] gnome-calculator crash during session login (misclassified?)

2022-03-29 Thread Jerry Quinn
Public bug reported:

Hi maintainers,

It is likely this report is misclassified, but I haven't been able to
trace it back to the real source.

I'm having trouble tracing what is going on here, other than there
appears to be a segfault related to gnome-calculator.

The following appears relevant:
/usr/share/gnome-shell/search-providers/org.gnome.Calculator-search-provider.ini

[Bug 1956977] [NEW] ubuntu dock causes gnome-shell keysym warnings

2022-01-10 Thread Jerry Quinn
Public bug reported:

Hi devs,
I was disabling gnome-shell extensions to try to narrow down a different
problem and discovered this one. The log snippet below appears from time to
time in my logs, but I've never known where it comes from.

I had disabled Ubuntu Dock and most other extensions. I didn't like it
off and turned it back on while following the log and saw another
instance of this. I verified that on my system, activating Dock causes
gnome-shell to print these warnings:

Jan 10 11:13:43 cerberus gnome-shell[2987]: Window manager warning: Overwriting
existing binding of keysym 31 with keysym 31 (keycode a).
Jan 10 11:13:43 cerberus gnome-shell[2987]: Window manager warning: Overwriting
existing binding of keysym 32 with keysym 32 (keycode b).
Jan 10 11:13:43 cerberus gnome-shell[2987]: Window manager warning: Overwriting
existing binding of keysym 33 with keysym 33 (keycode c).
Jan 10 11:13:43 cerberus gnome-shell[2987]: Window manager warning: Overwriting
existing binding of keysym 34 with keysym 34 (keycode d).
Jan 10 11:13:43 cerberus gnome-shell[2987]: Window manager warning: Overwriting
existing binding of keysym 35 with keysym 35 (keycode e).
Jan 10 11:13:43 cerberus gnome-shell[2987]: Window manager warning: Overwriting
existing binding of keysym 38 with keysym 38 (keycode 11).
Jan 10 11:13:43 cerberus gnome-shell[2987]: Window manager warning: Overwriting
existing binding of keysym 39 with keysym 39 (keycode 12).
Jan 10 11:13:43 cerberus gnome-shell[2987]: Window manager warning: Overwriting
existing binding of keysym 36 with keysym 36 (keycode f).
Jan 10 11:13:43 cerberus gnome-shell[2987]: Window manager warning: Overwriting
existing binding of keysym 37 with keysym 37 (keycode 10).

It may be a gnome-shell bug, but this seems like the starting place to
report.

[Bug 1956714] [NEW] gui took long time to return from blank screen

2022-01-06 Thread Jerry Quinn
Public bug reported:

I ignored my system for a while, long enough for the screensaver to
blank the screen. When I tried to get it to awake ( I don't need to log
back in), it seemed to be semihung, showing pretty black screen, but a
mouse cursor visible. It did not respond to hitting keys. I tried
switching back and forth between VT1 and VT2 to get it to come back to
life. Eventually it came back on its own, but it took too long.

Here's a chunk of log from the time this happened. There are on the
order of 2000 of the "maximum number of pending replies" messages that
you see at the end of this log snippet.

[Bug 1935901] Re: Braswell video locks up under gnome-shell

2021-07-16 Thread Jerry Quinn
Hi, there's a crash report mentioned on this page:

https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/241a8d330b8560e5d29b49b2d8df1a9340834364d1e9930a70caae16e29bf446d33032781384b132361e219d11002feddb39eb224ef4a8725b7f4651d988de57

but I don't have permission to follow the link to the actual crash
report.

I originally tried using this box with X11, but I could lock up the
screen regularly. So I tried running under wayland, which seems to be
more stable for this machine. The above crash report is from kodi-
wayland. When I look at what's running, I see Xwayland, which I assume
is wayland running with the x layer on top?

When I log in after a restart (too many of them), I have gnome on
wayland chosen.

Neither step 1 nor step 2 gave me anything unfortunately. I've
commented out the the problem types field, so perhaps I'll get more
useful data eventually. This is a rare occurrence.

[Bug 1747891] Re: gsd-color[1032]: failed to set screen _ICC_PROFILE

2021-06-18 Thread Jerry Quinn
The last comment of this bug report appears to describe what's
happening:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1641541

There are 2 Xorg processes running for some reason. One I'm logged
into, and the other is on another VT. The one I'm logged into has my
user id. The other one has uid gdm.

The Xorg with uid gdm has a child gsd-color process with the pid that
matches the errant log message.

There is also a gsd-color process with my uid that is a child of systemd
--user. I assume this happens when I logged in.

So this seems to be a bad byproduct of there being 2 Xorgs and gdms
running. Why does this happen anyway?

[Bug 1913662] [NEW] gnome-shell dock dvd icons remain after hard eject

Public bug reported:

I put in a video DVD and use it. After finishing, I eject by pressing
the physical drive button. The DVD icon in the gnome-shell dock
remains. I cannot then make the icon go away by right-clicking and
using the eject menu entry.

If I instead rightclick the DVD icon to eject while the disc is still in
the drive, the icon disappears as expected.

I've tried reinserting the DVD and then using the icon menu eject
option, but that doesn't remove the icon either.

So far, restarting the whole gui is the only way to clean up these
disconnected icons that I've found.

[Bug 1909407] [NEW] Mistake in Alt-Tab operation

2020-12-27 Thread Jerry Quinn
Public bug reported:

I've uncovered what I think is a bug in the way that gnome-shell
implements Alt-Tab support. First, my understanding is that the current
version of Alt-Tab is only supposed to select between windows in the
current virtual desktop.

I accidentally uncovered this as follows. I moved a Firefox window (I
have many open) from virtual desktop 2 to virtual desktop 1 using
C-S-A-Up. Then, when I use Alt-Tab, I see 3 firefox windows as part of
the 7 choices displayed. If I click on one of the other 2 firefox
windows, it takes me down to virtual desktop 2.

The window list for Alt-Tab in virtual desktop 2 doesn't include the
firefox window in virtual desktop 1, so immediately doing Alt-Tab after
the mistake doesn't reverse things.

[Bug 1881669] Re: Object .Gjs_AppIndicatorIconActor__1 (0x5582a2e9b240), has been already finalized. Impossible to set any property to it

2020-06-03 Thread Jerry Quinn
Hi Sebastien. It seems to be reproducible, but I don't know how to do
it. I see several events in my log today. One clue I see is that there
is a gnome-software message as well as the gnome-shell traces. I then
ran gnome-software. I see that it last checked at 6:16. And in the
log, there's one of these traces at 6:16.

Unfortunately, starting gnome-software and asking it to refresh didn't
create another stack trace.

It seems the pomodoro extension package is either out of date or too new
for the version of gnome-shell in Ubuntu 18.04.

[Bug 1881330] [NEW] gnome-terminal fails to start

2020-05-29 Thread Jerry Quinn
Public bug reported:

My system has something strange going on. I'm unable to start gnome-
terminal. In journalctl, I see the following cryptic message:

May 29 13:08:38 cerberus org.gnome.Shell.desktop[3960]: # Error
constructing proxy for org.gnome.Terminal:/org/gnome/Terminal/Factory0:
Could not connect: Connection refused

If I then try to start it from an existing terminal, I get:

jlquinn@cerberus:~/work/lt-language-pairs$ gnome-terminal
# Error constructing proxy for :1.89:/org/gnome/Terminal/Factory0: Could not
connect: Connection refused
# Failed to use specified server: Could not connect: Connection refused
# Falling back to default server.
# Error constructing proxy for org.gnome.Terminal:/org/gnome/Terminal/Factory0:
Could not connect: Connection refused

This is a somewhat important issue because it will force me to reboot my
machine (or at least GUI) due to the inability to create new terminals.

[Bug 1778596] [NEW] no way to specify DNS search domain for static address

2018-06-25 Thread Jerry Quinn
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 18.04 x86_64
I don't know if this is an issue in earlier versions or not.

In the old days when you hand edited /etc/resolv.conf, it was trivial to set a
domain search list.
It seems that the gnome-control-center dialog provides no way to set a search
list through the GUI.

It's possible to do so with hand editing or using nm-connection-editor
and restarting the network connection, but the obvious GUI way doesn't
work.

This is pretty bad. I see 8-10 messages per second in /var/log/syslog.
That makes it difficult to see anything else, potentially causing a

[Bug 1029965] [NEW] Add chat client selection

2012-07-27 Thread Jerry Quinn
Public bug reported:

This is almost but not quite an enhancement request.

I'm tripping over bugs in Empathy that I don't encounter with Pidgin.
I'd like Pidgin to be the default chat client, at least until I can get
those bugs resolved. Currently control panel doesn't offer a way to
make that switch.

I'm connecting to an IMAP server I control with SSL encryption and

[Bug 369498] Re: 32bits gtk and glib modules not found in ia32-libs

2011-11-09 Thread Jerry Lu
It is a similar issue with BUG#619293.

After upgraded ia32-libs from 2.7ubuntu26.1 with Ubuntu 10.04.02 to
2.7ubuntu26.2 from lucid-proposed.
/usr/lib32/libgvfscommon.so.0 is back.
But looks like libgio-2.0.so.0.2400.1 looks for modules in /usr/lib/gio/modules
instead of /usr/lib32/gio/modules.
The error messages 'wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64' is still there.

Thanks,
Jerry

Re: [Bug 804946] Re: gnome-settings-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV in g_variant_unref()

2011-09-14 Thread Jerry
I haven't seen it in a while,
but it was really bad to my CPU,
potentially overheating, and making
using the machine a royal pain (ITA)
and not killable as off some gdm or other
process, so if it returns,
I'll scream bloody murder again ;-/
but until then all is right, relatively
right in the world... ;-/

[Bug 630383] Re: Gnome-terminal paste keyboard shortcut does not work - menu not shown

2011-01-19 Thread Jerry Ablan
Just my $0.02 on this.

When I first start terminal, Shift-Ctrl-C/V do not work, Shift-Insert
does. If I open up keyboard shortcuts and close the dialog (WITHOUT
CHANGING ANYTHING), the shortcuts begin to work.

It's like the initial loading of shortcuts is goofed or skipped until
you go into the keyboard shortcuts dialog.

Thanks!

[Bug 680496] [NEW] opening a folder on the Desktop...

2010-11-23 Thread Jerry Kaukko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Computer just booted up and I was looking for some files on my computers
Desktop in some folders. No programs started up, except for the
default/system ones. I did open the folders with double left click on
mouse. The folder did not open up, but got this apport bug reporting
auto started. But then I'm not 100% sure that trying to open a folder
was the last thing before the bug occurred. But it sure was on the
Desktop and with and involved only left mouse clicks. With no folders or
windows open as I remember it.

[Bug 256478] Re: Support contact grouping (metacontacts)

2010-04-30 Thread Jerry
What Tom and Phil said...
A little more than a year ago Ubuntu made the bold choice of replacing Pidgin,
which I'll concede, is a stagnant and no-longer innovating project, but that is
nevertheless pretty much "up there" feature AND stability-wise (except for
video and some other "extras" that it's been clear all along that will probably
never get added) with Empathy, which is a cool new (well not so much anymore)
project with an interesting completely modular design and a much greater room
for improvement in the grand scheme of the always-online desktop, in the hopes
that doing so would inject empathy with the neccesary developers and innovating
drive required to make it a top-of-the-line IM solution perfectly suited for
Ubuntu. Now, one year later, Ubuntu has done a GREAT job in the workflow of the
DE in general but has done almost nothing for Empathy (except for the webcam
thing which doesn't really work that well either). Today, empathy feels almost
as primitive, aphla-y, unstable and generally unusable as it did a year ago.
Simple things like this bug's metacontacts, the control over chat logs or even
the keyboard shortcut for switching between tabs (Ctrl-tab) are sorely missing.
And the responses we get from gnome developers range from a simple "no, and
we'll never add that kind of control" (in the case of the keyboard shortcut, to
an elusive "it's planned for Gnome 3" which is (IMHO) inacceptable not only for
the fact that Gnome 3 is in all probability more than a year away (and even
more so before it can be considered "production stable"), but also because it
denotes the unflexible and disregarding nature of the people in charge of this
project.
I just think the folks at Ubuntu should have given that decision a little more
thought, specially given the controversy and uproar that it caused when it was
proposed.
And I wish someone could hack-in this functionality, because small and
insignificant as it may be, makes a day-and-night difference for people with >3
IM accounts.

[Bug 492651] Re: e-mail accounts not displayed on left -- evolution

2009-12-05 Thread jerry
Received Your e-mail-- trying to reply-- selected send/receive-- no
responce, mail not sent-- display shows sending but will not complete.
copy of e-mail body below, don't know how to include screen shot here.
So now another problem-- send not working.

Your request: I am new to Ubuntu-- setup as dual boot- winxp pro sp3
Ubuntu 9.10 on Intel pent4 2.6 and 2.5gb ram 3hd partitioned as: drv1
c:main D:software M:UBUNTU drv2 g:misc j:misc2 drv3 k:work-area.
  The attachment has 4 areas for reference: (*A), (*B), (*C), (*D).
This morning found and setup my hotmail account. When I opened
Evolution the 2nd time my accounts showed IN:(*D) for a time left click
on the mail icon at (*C) showed: Evolution mail Jerry-hot (default)
Delia-rr Jerry-rr . It changed back to just Evolution after I
referenced Delia-rr mail received.

Internal:
(*A) Using win live mail this area list all e-mail accounts with in box
sent etc. Does Evolution do the same?
(*B) Should the accounts show here all the time?
(*C) accounts setup for mail
(*D) Evolution icon box display on left click--Should the accounts show
here all the time?
**Evolution is now grouping all accounts under 1 Inbox. How to access
each account alone.
---
New Question: When booting-- select windows or UBUNTU -- next screen
now has 14 15 and 16 versions to select from. I am afraid to touch that
screen, because: I had Major problems with Grub and Grub2-- I have
reinstalled Ubuntu 6 times and do not want to do it again. How to
safely remove ref 14 and later other versions as the system is updated?
Is there a utility for Ubuntu 9.10 to do that?

Learning curve is at this time a major function, getting better. Very
impressed with your system. I will be changing my laptop to Ubuntu only
in a few days. This desktop will remain as dual boot for some time.
Must learn and verify use for video audio etc. Have 2 1tb external
drives for backup.
Thank You for the quick responce. I hope this answeres Your questions
for now. Will learn procedures to follow in time-- too much to take in
for now.

end of message -- maybe I found how to attach screen shot.

[Bug 306310] Re: Resume (from memory) goes back to sleep automatically

2009-12-02 Thread Jerry Quinn
I see this behavior on my Asus 1000HA with Karmic installed and
2.6.31-15. I get it perhaps one in three wakeups from sleep. It gets
as far as showing me an X screen then goes back to sleep. The second
wakeup then works as expected.

[Bug 491477] [NEW] display brightens unexpectedly on input running with battery

2009-12-02 Thread Jerry Quinn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

While on battery power, I'm observing that screen brightness misbehaves.
The machine is an ASUS 1000HA.

I manually push the brightness down all the way using Fn-F5. I am
reading a document and periodically scrolling or paging using either
keys or touchpad scroll feature. Sometimes when I provide an input (it
doesn't matter whether it's keyboard or touchpad) the brightness will go
up to full and I have to manually force the brightness all the way down
again.

If I've told the system I want the display fully dimmed, it should never
exceed that setting even when it sees I'm no longer idle.

I am using the default settings for the power manager.

[Bug 413975] [NEW] [time-admin] Karmic 2.27.2 timezone map is distorted

2009-08-15 Thread Jerry Chong
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-tools

Fresh upgrade of Karmic, displaying the world map when selecting a
timezone in time-admin shows a distorted image. Half of the map is
rendered in black, and the other half is rendered with color corruption.
(Screenshot attached)

Console output shows:

[Bug 355970] Re: jaunty nautilus Segmentation fault (core dumped)

2009-08-07 Thread Jerry Snitselaar
For future reference in order to get core dumps for applications to save
you probably need to modify your ulimit settings. Do a 'ulimit -a' and
most likely core file size is set to 0. You can set it to take a core
dump by specifying a maximum size for the dump, or setting it to
unlimited with 'ulimit -c #' or 'ulimit -c unlimited'.
