[Bug 221112] Re: Can't use space bar in search bar when using french alternative keyboard

2010-04-10 Thread Jim Braux-Zin
Come on, this is a *huge* usability issue affecting almost all French
users and which can be fixed by changing a single default option. I
can't see how anything could be more suitable for a paper cut!

[Bug 478178] Re: Empathy is almost impossible to set as a startup application

2010-03-25 Thread Jim Braux-Zin
I think there is an additional consitency problem with Lucid. For the
user point of view there should be no difference in behaviour between
the Gwibber+gwibber-service (which starts automatically) combination and
Empathy+telepathy. I mean that for a user both apps will display
notification in the background, both apps are manageable through the
MeMenu and the Indicator applet, they should have the same startup
behaviour.

[Bug 478178] Re: Empathy is almost impossible to set as a startup application

2010-03-25 Thread Jim Braux-Zin
I have just thought of a simple solution that could make the problem of
not automatically launching Empathy less bad, based on my own behaviour
and expectations.

I suggest that MeMenu could launch Empathy if the user click on Online
or Away, or any state other than Offline. This way, on standard
startup the MeMenu would show that the user is offline (because Empathy
has not been launched) and if he wants to go online he just has to click
on Online.

What do you think? It would be an Ubuntu only change which won't annoy
Gnome or Empathy. There is still the issue of choosing which IM client
to launch if Pidgin is installed for example.

[Bug 221112] Re: Can't use space bar in search bar when using french alternative keyboard

2010-03-23 Thread Jim Braux-Zin
Yes, impossible to look for marina and the diamonds for example,
either in the search bar or in the new Ubuntu Music Store. I can
understand that the problem can be hard to fix though it is only one
radiobox to check by default in the layout options (see answer 41 by
Christophe Mehay)... But really no one can say that not being able to
write spaces in a search box is a huge usabilty issue. Just imagine what
a (French) newcomer to Ubuntu would think!

And by the way I don't know what those unbreakable spaces are for, I
have never noticed them so I don't think anyone would miss them.

Another simple fix is to use Banshee. I ran into this issue on my Lucid
netbook when I wanted to check the new Music Store and to see how
Rhythmbox had evolved, I am more than disappointed and it is not even
Rhythmbox fault, what a shame.

Have you tried the latest Chrome version ? Since I upgraded Chrome, I still
experienced the issue with the Flash configuration dialog but that's all.
All embedded players have been ok.

This obviously isn't specific to Ubuntu or Firefox. There's a lot lot
lot more to it. I looked over many work-arounds and I came to the
conclusion that what I came up with wasn't a work-around but rather the
best way to manually install these packages (java/flash).

It's off topic for here but perhaps this will help some of you. DO NOT
post this worked or didn't work for me or I will remove the post and
ban your IP from my server. This is informational ONLY.

Re: [Bug 437429] Re: No GUI to configure/disable login sound

2009-11-10 Thread Jim Braux-Zin
I think we should focus here on the lack of GUI for disabling the GDM sound
(system ready). The Gnome login sound is more easily disabled even if it
would be worth opening a bug about the problem with Empathy's notifications
etc.

2009/11/10 lightrush lightr...@gmail.com

 @Przemyslaw
You have a point but not exactly. Notice that I mentioned disabling other
sounds than System Ready. Both solutions affect the whole system. These
 fixes:

 sudo -u gdm dbus-launch gconftool-2 --set
 /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/settings-manager-plugins/sound/active --type
 bool false
 or:
 sudo -u gdm dbus-launch gconftool-2 --set
 /desktop/gnome/sound/event_sounds --type bool false

turn off all sound notifications for GDM which is OK because we don't
run under GDM, but as I mentioned above, if we want to disable the GNOME
Login sound (not System Ready) and we apply the same fix for the running
user then all sound notifications are turned off including Empathy's
since they are integrated with GNOME's.

Whereas renaming the files we do not want to play eradicates ONLY that
sound notification wherever it is used. Indeed all applications that use
this particular notification will not play it anymore. Fortunately the
sound files seem well separated by notification so that problem does not
 appear.

Based on the aforementioned premises I advise people to simply rename
the sounds which they do not want to hear and that will leave the other
 notifications on.

2009-11-03 Thread Jim Braux-Zin
I can confirm this issue on my up to date 9.10. It seems to me that it
would be better not to ship this feature if it is broken. I am not
expecting the default video player to allow me to search and play videos
on Youtube and I don't think a lot of people would miss this feature. On
the other hand, seeing this feature in Totem makes you willing to try
and then makes you frustrated and upset.

[Bug 448051] [NEW] The trash is not emptied anymore in Karmic when ejecting removable devices

2009-10-10 Thread Jim Braux-Zin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-volume-manager

In Jaunty when I unmounted a usb drive through Gnome, a dialog popped up
asking me if I would like to empty the trash of this device.

In Karmic, I don't see this dialog anymore, and as a result I ended up
with no more free space on my key while it appeared empty. I think it

[Bug 447206] [NEW] In Karmic there is no easy way to disable the drums on gdm startup

2009-10-09 Thread Jim Braux-Zin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Like most nomad users of laptops, I often end up switching my computer
on in public places. I don't want unexpected sound to be heard. All
sounds in the Gnome desktop are easily deactivated, thanks to the
Sounds configuration item.

However, to disable the drums at GDM startup, you had to go to the
Login screen configuration item on Jaunty (which wasn't that easy to
find for new users), and it is much worse but in Karmic: gdmsetup had
been stripped down (which is a good thing) and doesn't show the sound
option anymore.

I would vote for simply disabling that sound by default, I can't see any
need for it.

[Bug 198857] Re: gnome-vfs network servers are not migrated to gvfs on upgrade

2008-04-13 Thread Jim Braux-Zin
I think there is a problem with how nautilus handles those gvfs
bookmarks :

1) Open a gedit window, and navigate through remote ftps with the
sidepanel : you can open and save all files as if they were on a local
drive, no mount icon appears on the desktop.

2) Open the same ftp with nautilus : it does create a mount icon on
the desktop.

That's weird and inconsistent but the real problem is :

3) Go back to the gedit window : you can't access the files on the
mounted server anymore until you unmount the server.

As a side-effect : double-clicking on a remote file in nautilus opens
gedit but gedit can't access the file...

[Bug 117896] Re: Loses e-mails when moving accross IMAP folders

2008-04-06 Thread Jim Braux-Zin
I am experiencing this bug. It is a critical one to me too, because it
can lead to the loss of many e-mails, and I have actually lost some
before noticing there were still available when checking show deleted
messages.

I tell you how I can reproduce it on my machine :

I have a professional pop account, an imap account on Free.fr and I
access my gmail account through imap.

I want to switch to gmail so I copied all my message from the local
folders to gmail. It worked almost perfectly (except some subfolders
thad failed to be created but I think it is gmail related).

Then I tried to copy my messages from the imap account to gmail : no
mail were transfered. I then tried to move manually some mails from the
imap Inbox to gmail : the messages simply disappeared and I had to check
show deleted messages to recover them.

Please at least prevent users to do dangerous operations, mails are very
important data.

I use an up to date Hardy 64bits.

I attach a log obtained by opening evolution with CAMEL_DEBUG=all
evolution evo.log, trying to move one message from the imap account
to gmail and closing evolution. I have not been able to see anything
suspicious but maybe you will.

Update : I have just tried all possible transfers with two messages
(text I sent to myself and everything worked fine. I tried with another
mail that wasn't from me and transfers from local to gmail and from imap
to gmail failed. It seems to affect messages randomly, but an affected
message would fail with a 100% probability.

It seems that mails with images are more likely to fail...

I hope I can help, thank you.

Jim.

PS The battery status is still fine though :-)

[Bug 197412] [NEW] Battery state reported by g-p-m is wrong, acpi -V gives correct results

2008-03-01 Thread Jim Braux-Zin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Hi,

I am using Hardy on a Lenovo 3000 N200 laptop.

'acpi -V' returns :

Battery 1: discharging, 55%, remaining
No support for device type: thermal
  AC Adapter 1: off-line

and gnome-power-manager reports a wrong state as you can see in the
screenshot (it is in French but you can see g-p-m shows 95%).

[Bug 69795] Re: Copying from a POP account to an IMAP one lose the message

2007-08-11 Thread Jim Braux-Zin
For me on Feisty it's still an issue, I often can't move a mail from a
local folder to an imap one, the mail simply disappear. I have just
tried with two mails, one was transfered and the other disappeared...
Tell me if you want me to do more testing, I'll try with Gusty asap.

[Bug 69795] Re: Copying from a POP account to an IMAP one lose the message

2007-01-30 Thread Jim Braux-Zin
I use edgy. I have just checked again and the problem is still around.
All mails moved from the local inbox (one by one) to the imap inbox just
disappeared. However, moving mail from imap to local works just fine.

I think it's not exactly the same problem as #64317.

Thank you for tackling this issue, tell me if you need more information.

Jim.

[Bug 69169] Totem won't display dvd menus

2006-10-29 Thread Jim Braux-Zin
Public bug reported:

Since I upgraded from dapper to edgy, totem won't display the dvd menus,
it plays it from beginning to end, without asking me anything. I tried
with 3 dvds and it worked with dapper.

So I'll use xine.

Totem still needs a lot of work as the plugin is far from being perfect
too and I have to use mplayer plugin, but it is another problem.

Thank you
Jim.

[Bug 62192] Re: evolution ships with spam filtering completely mangled

2006-10-07 Thread Jim Braux-Zin
I can confirm this bug. I had to disable the spamassassin plugin and
install bogofilter to make the junk filtering functionnal.

These actions are not logical for a new user and no message tell him an
error occured!

I can't understand how this problem isn't solved yet, as there have been
problems with junk filtering for a few versions now!

[Bug 62163] Re: Evolution doesn't open keyring when launched by a keybinding

2006-09-30 Thread Jim Braux-Zin
I have the problem when evolution is launched by Firefox when I click on
a mailto: link too. It opens the message window fine but it asks me
again for my pop and imap passwords.

The worst is that it then continue to periodically pop the password
entry, even with evolution closed. I have to launch it again through the
menu tu get rid of that.

Very annoying problem actually.

[Bug 62163] Evolution doesn't open keyring when launched by a keybinding

2006-09-24 Thread Jim Braux-Zin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Hello, I am using edgy since yesterday and I found a very annoying bug
for me:

Evolution now uses gnome-keyring to store the passwords which isn't a
bad thing for me as it works very well... if I launch evolution either
by the launcher in the menu or by the command 'evolution' on the command
line, or even by the Alt-F2 dialog.

However, if I launch evolution by using the keybinding set in gnome, it
keeps asking me the passwords for my two mail accounts and can't
remember it.

I hope you can solve this problem.

Jim.
