I have switched to mate which uses lightdm i believe. Regardless, I have no
issues on mate 20.04. I am sure there are others with a lenovo m93p tiny
with the same cpu to test this out.

[Bug 1804923] Re: App freezes on Wifi page

2018-12-16 Thread Malcolm Lalkaka
Thanks for looking into this and sorry for the late reply. It looks like
you already found an existing fix for this, but if you still need me to
provide a backtrace, please let me know and I'll try to get that for you
sooner this time.

You mentioned that this was fixed in 18.10, but after installing all
available updates from Ubuntu Software, it doesn't look like I have the
fix. Running `gnome-control-center --version` returns `gnome-control-
center 3.30.2`. Is that the version that should have the fix?

Also for the future, is there a way that I can tell if a particular
upstream merge request has made it into an Ubuntu package?

[Bug 1804923] [NEW] App freezes on Wifi page

2018-11-24 Thread Malcolm Lalkaka
Public bug reported:

The gnome-control-center app intermittently freezes when I'm on the WiFi
page.

Repro Steps:
1. Start gnome-control-center.
2. Go to the WiFi page (if not already on it).
3. Click or scroll around on the page.

Expected Result:
Clicking and scrolling works normally, and is responsive.

Actual Result:
The app freezes and clicking and scrolling stops working intermittently.
Perhaps it is happening when trying to refresh the WiFi networks list?

[Bug 1283003] Re: [Bluetooth + 14.04] Bluetooth headsets are not working after last couple of updates

2015-10-13 Thread Malcolm Brown
I have two notebook computers - a Toshiba and a Fujitsu both of which
are very old and are both dual boot computers with Windows 7 and Ubuntu
14.04 LTE 32 bit. Both computers and both operating systems work fine
with Bluetooth linking to a Bose mini soundlink speaker for playing
music. I use a USB bluetooth dongle for the link and all works well.

However, with a much newer laptop, a Toshiba Satellite Pro C50-A-1K9
running the 64 bit version of Ubuntu 14.04 LTE I cannot get bluetooth to
work despite using the same dongle and the same speaker. The first time
it finds the device, attempts to pair, but asks that a particular 4
digit code be entered from the device. This is of course impossible as
the Bose mini soundlink speaker does not have a keypad! Further attempts
to search for bluetooth devices after this first time find nothing. If I
then go back to the old notepad computers they also cannot find the
device at all with either Windows or Ubuntu 14.04 32 bit. I strongly
suspect that the 64 bit version of Ubuntu 14.04 LTE has sent a code to
the speaker which prevents it linking via bluetooth thereafter.

If anyone else has the Bose mini soundlink speaker and needs to overcome
this problem, then

Perform a factory reset on the speaker by first turning it on then
holding down the bluetooth button for about ten seconds when the speaker
beeps and will now work again with the old computers and windows 7 or
Ubuntu 14.04 LTE 32 bit.

Hope a skilled programmer finds the bug!

[Bug 1449001] [NEW] systemd-resolved: please do not use Google public DNS by default

2015-04-27 Thread Malcolm Scott
Public bug reported:

systemd-resolved will fall back to Google public DNS (8.8.8.8, etc.) in
the absence of other configured DNS servers.

systemd-resolved is not enabled by default in Ubuntu 15.04, but it is
installed by default and will behave in this way if enabled by the user.

$ cat /etc/systemd/resolved.conf
(...)
# Entries in this file show the compile time defaults.
(...)
#FallbackDNS=8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4 2001:4860:4860:: 2001:4860:4860::8844

This raises privacy concerns since in the event of accidental
misconfiguration DNS queries will be sent unencrypted across the
internet, and potentially also security concerns given systemd-resolved
does not perform DNSSEC validation and is not particularly well hardened
against malicious responses e.g. from a MITM
(http://www.openwall.com/lists/oss-security/2014/11/12/5).

I believe that it would be better to fail safe if no DNS server is
configured -- i.e. have DNS lookups fail; it's better that the user is
aware of their misconfiguration, rather than silently sending their
queries to Google. The user can intentionally opt to use Google public
DNS if they wish.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Remove existing DNS configuration (from /etc/network/interfaces,
/etc/resolv.conf, /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/*)
2. Reboot, or otherwise clear relevant state
3. sudo service systemd-resolved start
4. Note that Google's servers are listed in /run/systemd/resolve/resolv.conf
5. If systemd-resolved is enabled in /etc/nsswitch.conf (it isn't by default),
observe that DNS lookups probably still work, and queries are being sent to one
of Google's servers

Possible workaround/bugfix: ship a resolved.conf which clears the FallbackDNS
parameter.

This issue has been discussed in the Debian BTS
(https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=761658). My interpretation
of the Debian package maintainer's position is that a user concerned with the
privacy implications shouldn't let systemd get into a state where it uses the
fallback DNS servers (quoting Marco d'Itri: Short summary: have a resolv.conf
file or use DHCP). I would argue that it's safest not to have fallback DNS
servers configured at all by default.

[Bug 10905] Re: Keyboard shortcuts, window management - Can't use any global keyboard shortcuts or hotkeys when applet/menu is open

2013-11-29 Thread Malcolm Ke
I've read the code in unity/services/panel-service.c
about PanelService: close a menu and re-send the keyevent when handling a
combination Or when we try to open HUD/Dash. Also, close the active
menu if a new application is opened and focused. (LP: #10905,
#1234457, #1197071),

but it still does not resolve the problem about PrintScreen key to
snapshot context menu.

The root reason is at the XGrabKeyboard in popup_grab_on_window() of
gtk/gtkmenu.c.

Guys, don't bother yourself any more, as you know linux means freedom, we could
get rid of XGrabKeyboard by ourselves:

[Bug 1246996] [NEW] New messages: alert, but not shown in message window, when logging disabled

2013-11-01 Thread Jeremy Malcolm
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to Ubuntu 13.10 recently, the behaviour of Empathy has
changed. Before, when I received an alert about a new message and

[Bug 742931] Re: Universal Access Preferences icon in GDM (Natty) is not appropriate

2011-04-05 Thread Jeremy Malcolm
#741385 doesn't cover this. That relates to a bug in ubuntu-mono which
has been fixed, and an issue with libappindicator which can't possibly
affect gdm. I upgraded to natty from maverick only after the fix to
ubuntu-mono had already been released, so I never had the problem with
broken icons in the notification area, but I do have the same problem
with the gdm icon. Thus, I've reopened the bug.

If it doesn't, then this is likely to be a consequence of

But note that one of the responses to that bug report says However, I

evidenced from the server logs. This is my experience too.

[Bug 726376] [NEW] Cannot create a WebDAV address book

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I have tried to add a WebDAV address book. The URL I specify is that of
a WebDAV directory that is either empty, or else contains one or more
vcard files - it makes no difference. In either case I get a message
Loading Addressbook summary in the status bar, but no progress. If I
try to add a new address to the new address book, I get Error adding

[Bug 719750] [NEW] imapx shows old mails

2011-02-15 Thread Jeremy Malcolm
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I have a shell script which automatically deletes read bulk email from
my mbox-format mailbox periodically, to avoid it filling up, like this:

grepmail -q -v -j r bulkmail bulkmail.new

(This is something that Thunderbird can do automatically, but Evolution
can't, hence my use of the shell script.)

However whilst Evolution shows the correct list of messages in my bulk
folder, the content of the messages that it displays when you click on a
message in that list is wrong. It is showing old emails that have long
since been deleted. I am using imapx protocol.

I understand that the suggested fix for this bug may be don't do that,
but it would also affect those who use a command line mail reader like
mutt to access their mailboxes when they are away from Evolution (as I
also do).

Here is some debugging stuff that I get after clicking a message, though
it doesn't look very useful:

[Bug 592494] [NEW] Nautilus folder list keeps changing

2010-06-10 Thread Malcolm
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Upon upgrading to 10.04 LTS, Nautilus started a new behavior:

When launched to select a file for attachment to an e-mail, at least two
folders, usually Public and Templates, but sometimes other folders,
alternate position in the list window. At the same time, the mouse
cannot select a file. Repeated attempts sometimes succeeds in selecting
a file, but when the selection is not successful, the window moves, in
sequence, to one of the other sub-folders in the list window.

Sometimes dismissing this window then relaunching Nautilus helps, other
times Nautilus has frozen.

Other file managers, such as GNOME Commander, do not display this
alternating position problem.

 Hi Malcolm,

What is the exact command you are typing?

Desktop is located on your home folder, so in order to access it you first
have to cd to your home. You can do that by just typing cd.
Then, the Desktop folder has a capital D. And folder names are case
sensitive, so you should type: cd Desktop. Because of the bash error you
added I think you typed desktop with lower case d.

 From my terminal:
 elo...@tangamandapio-laptop:/tmp$ cd
 elo...@tangamandapio-laptop:~$ cd Desktop/
 elo...@tangamandapio-laptop:~/Desktop$

Appart from that, you say that you can't cd to any directory. Have you tried
 other directories? like:
 $ cd /tmp

Not sure if this is the same bug or not but same error message.

/tmp became full.

Next time started up got the error.

Ran /usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 from a terminal. Error
message said could not delete file null and a subsequent line that there
was a problem creating a file in /tmp.

sudo chmod a+rwx /tmp

On restart everything (well most things at any rate) were working again.

A few other things tried from the suggestions above without any apparent
effect.

[Bug 222322] Re: IDE addressing screwed in Hardy

2008-04-26 Thread Don Malcolm
This problem appears to be a kernel issue. When I select kernel
2.6.22-14-generic from the grub menu during boot up, the IDE addressing
behaves normally, and I can access all my hard drives. When I select
kernel 2.6.24-16-generic the IDE addressing is screwed, and I can only
access some of my hard drives.

Note also that at no time was there a sdc or sdd. When running the
2.6.24-16-generic kernel, there is at most just sda and sdb. I have
three hard drives, and with the 2.6.22-14-generic kernel there is hda
hdb and hdc.

[Bug 222322] [NEW] IDE addressing screwed in Hardy

2008-04-25 Thread Don Malcolm
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: file-roller

The addressing of IDE devices is screwed. Rather than address as hda hdb
hdc hdd they are being addressed in Hardy as sda sdb. This works if you
only have one IDE drive on hda. It gets misinterpreted as sda, but is
functional.

The problem becomes clearly apparent when you start putting hard drives
on the secondary IDE controller. For example when you have one drive as
master on hda and another as master on the secondary controller on hdc.
Only hda is picked up and converted to sda. Unfortunately hdc is not
visible. Doing 'fdisk -l' only reports on drives on the primary
controller.

Furthermore, in other configurations, I have had only drives on the
secondary controller being picked up, with drives on the primary
controller invisible.

My hardware is under two years old.

Gutsy works fine. Gutsy correctly addresses my IDE devices.

I have for much of yesterday and today been attempting to install Hardy.
But without success. I tried a fresh install of Dapper, and upgrade to
Hardy, but that failed with unresolvable dependencies, that did not
resolve when instructions to -f install were followed.

So I did a fresh install of Gutsy and upgrade to Hardy. This correctly
addressed my IDE devices in Gutsy, but were screwed after the upgrade
(otherwise successful) to Hardy.

Being totally disillusioned with Hardy, I installed Fedora Core 8 (just
released). Interestingly, the same screwup in IDE addressing occurred
there also. So this leads me to believe the source of this show stopper
bug, is somewhere upstream.

I am forced to abandon Hardy, and will make do with Gutsy, until a
resolution to this bug is made available.

Maybe related to this. On another machine that has no IDE devices
connected, the grub bootloader in Hardy failed, and gave the option of
LILO during the install. It now is fully functional using the LILO
bootloader.

[Bug 117943] Re: gnome-session should depend on dbus-x11

2008-03-21 Thread Malcolm Scott
I too see this bug, on upgrading to hardy on my rather minimal (non-
GNOME) system on which I still run gnome-settings-daemon in order that
my settings will be applied to GTK apps.

[Bug 127530] Re: anti spam system doesn't work after an upgrade to gutsy

2007-10-12 Thread Malcolm Yates
Hi. I think this may be related too : after upgrading yesterday to
Kubuntu 7.10 my mail bogofilter decided to put all of my mail ( from all
of my ids ) except for two items in to my local spam folder.

Disabling bogofilter within kmail alows all mail through.

if this so, this may well be a bogofilter config / implementation
problem, rather than a specific mail client problem.

[Bug 62430] Re: rhythmbox doesn't do anything with .pls given on the command line

2007-05-18 Thread Malcolm Parsons
By the way, I did change it just like that, and it does not work, I
don't know why. Can someone help on that?

Did you run update-mime?

/usr/lib/mime/packages/* are used for creating /etc/mailcap.

I don't know if GNOME/KDE apps make use of /etc/mailcap or have their
own MIME database.

[Bug 67919] Re: Xinerama problem with log out and unlock dialogues

2007-03-08 Thread Malcolm Parsons
Run gksu, enter password, press ok, watch screen.

The gksu dialog is displayed ok, and the desktop is ok when gksu has finished,
but briefly during the unfade you can see that the second head was unfaded
first.

It's a very minor problem.

[Bug 62430] Re: FireFox associates .pls files with RhythmBox

2006-11-30 Thread Malcolm Parsons
I'm using Edgy on AMD64.

Example: http://www.irlp.net/listen_live.html links to
http://live.irlp.net:8000/listen.pls

Running rhythmbox http://live.irlp.net:8000/listen.pls; launches
rhythmbox, but does not play the playlist or add a new internet radio
station.

Downloading the playlist, then running rhythmbox listen.pls launches
rhythmbox, but does not play the playlist or add a new internet radio
station.

In rhythmbox you can add a new internet radio station and paste a URL
into the dialog, but neither of the above commands is a shortcut to do
this.

[Bug 62430] Re: FireFox associates .pls files with RhythmBox

2006-11-29 Thread Malcolm Parsons
The /usr/lib/mime/packages/rhythmbox file is part of the Ubuntu patch, so this
is not an upstream bug.
It is a very simple bug, only one line in that file needs to be removed.
No specification needed.
No reporting upstream is needed for this incorrect file association with
rhythmbox.

It would be nice if Rhythmbox did load pls files from the command line.
That should be reported upstream.

[Bug 67698] After dist-upgrade, default session changed

Public bug reported:

[Bug 67698] Re: After dist-upgrade, default session changed

2006-10-24 Thread Malcolm Parsons
gnome-session removes alternatives on upgrade.

gnome-session.prerm:
if [ $1 = remove ] || [ $1 = upgrade ]; then
  update-alternatives --remove x-session-manager /usr/bin/gnome-session
  update-alternatives --remove desktop-splash \
/usr/share/pixmaps/splash/gnome-splash.png
  update-alternatives --remove desktop-splash \
/usr/share/pixmaps/splash/gnome-debian-splash.png
fi
...

Other packages don't:
bash.prerm:
if [ $1 != upgrade ]; then
update-alternatives --remove builtins.7.gz \
...

Is it OK for me to add tasks to this bug for the other gnome packages
which do this?

[Bug 67406] Mistake in gcalctool doc

2006-10-21 Thread Malcolm Parsons
Public bug reported:

The gcalctool doc says:

To enter a number in exponential format, use the guidelines in the following
table:
Number | Enter | Number Displayed
12 | 12 Exp 8 = | 12
-12 | 12 Exp 8 = +/- | -12
0.0012 | 12 Exp 8 +/- | 1.2e-7
-0.0012 | 12 Exp 8 +/- +/- | -1.2e-7

The instructions given in the last row do not work. 12 Exp 8 +/- = +/-
would work, but I think it makes more sense to enter 12 +/- Exp 8 +/-.

[Bug 67408] Incorrectly rounded pi constant

gcalctool thinks pi = 3.141592653

The value in the source is longer than displayed in the GUI:
./gcalctool/get.c:init_constant(3, 3.1415926535); /* pi */
