[Bug 395299] Re: gdm 2.26 has no graphical configuration tool

2011-07-30 Thread Mark W
Don't bother.. Ubuntu's primary desktop teams current focus apparently
does not include users smarter than a catfish. If you have an IQ of
higher than 5, this desktop is not designed for you. (It's not just
Ubuntu at fault here, Gnome team has had a role in this dumbing down
behaviour too, even prior to 3.0 Shell)

Sebastian Bacher: Nothing to do specifically with this bug per se, but
must you ALWAYS be a total arrogant douche-bag towards users who have
genuine concerns and problems? Lighten up and learn to relate to users!
I've been watching your responses over the past few years, and I
seriously am beginning to suspect you are on Microsoft's payroll, on a
hell-bent mission to destroy Linux.

Me? Oh yeah, I can certainly be a douche too sometimes.. But I'm not one
with any authority or influence to screw Ubuntu up.

I seriously hope Mr Bacher isn't also on Canonical's payroll.. If so..
no wonder things have gotten so crap.

[Bug 785479] [NEW] gtkcalendar emitting incorrect day_selected signal

2011-05-19 Thread Mark W
Public bug reported:

When clicking (or selecting via keyboard) on the days surrounding a
month in the gtk calendar widget, the widget emits two day_selected
events.

The first, with an incorrect date, is emitted by calendar_set_month_prev
next functions.. the second emitted correctly from
calendar_select_and_focus_day.

When calendar_set_month_prev next is called by the
calendar_main_button_press and gtk_calendar_key_press, this first signal
needs to be blocked. (calendar_set_month_prev next are also called,
but correctly from the month back and forward buttons)

When changing from a month with more days (with one of those days
selected) to a following month with less days, the first signal emitted
in this case contains an invalid date.

You can verify this behaviour in the gtk calendar sample. For example
click may 31st, then click on June 1st in the surrounding days.

I submitted a patch upstream (for the svn version) on this issue. A fix along
these lines could be used in gtk+2.0

[Bug 390816] Re: external monitor output is switched off when closing the laptop-lid when gnome-power-manager is set to blank screen on closing

2010-05-11 Thread Mark W
The gconf thing, whilst very hacky, did the trick for me. seems I'm having to
use it a lot lately :(
I now have a Do Nothing in the menu. Yay! Why wasn't it the default?

@Nicolo, the closed screen should still blank, the hardware switch is
(usually? :) wired to disable at least the backlight (which is the
screen's main power drain). In some notebooks you can engage your lid-
close switch without actually closing the screen and see what happens.
But I suppose a per monitor software solution would be the best
solution.. Klunky to implement. Perhaps a ignore non-software power
saving events for this monitor under Monitors?

Making gnome easier to use for newbies shouldn't come at the expense of
flexibility for power users.. A little Borg mentality is slipping
though. :(

We could possibly compile a list of all these little gconf gems for
power users and fixes for the other little regressions that have
popped up for the sake of newbie proofing, and maybe put them in a big
script with a check-box during installation that says If I wanted to be
told what I'm allowed to do with my computer, I'd be using
Microsoft/Apple/Sony/Nintendo/Oracle software!

[Insert 'gconf + Ubuntu/Gnome's users==idiots Policy should be buried
in the same grave as Micro$oft' rant here]

[Bug 492759] Re: Empty card reader slots still show icons in Computer:///

2009-12-07 Thread Mark W
Thats OK, I'll chase upstream.. Just wanted to put a feeler out on this
one to see what others thought about it.

I agree the empty cdrom icon is kind of useful, because you can
(usually) eject/open the drive tray/etc.. (that's actually missing in
karmic at the moment, but that's another issue :)

A card reader really doesn't have anything to offer like this, other than the
comfort that the device is actually present..
the SD/XD/MMC port on my Toshiba notebook doesn't show up unless a card is
inserted, it's only really the old clunky cardreaders..

Trying to locate an actual device with real media amongst all those
empty icons is still quite a pain in the backside.

Perhaps we could make the unmounted media icons more transparent/lightly
coloured to make the others stand out more?

[Bug 492759] [NEW] Empty card reader slots still show icons in Computer:///

2009-12-04 Thread Mark W
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

I guess this is technically a gnome upstream issue, but it's been
plaguing ubuntu for a while, and as I couldn't find any open bugs, I
opened this one as a reminder.

Using Karmic, gvfs1.4.1-0ubuntu1, my generic 4x USB Card Reader shows
up icons without media inserted.

..$ gvfs-ls computer:///
CD\DVD Drive.drive
Generic- Compact Flash.drive
Generic- MS\MS-Pro.drive
Generic- SD\MMC.drive
Generic- SM\xD-Picture.drive
root.link

The icons are changing correctly when cards are inserted, and they are
also unmounting correctly.

However it would be nice if there was a simple hack to hide the icons
when they are empty, as it's kinda klunky and makes using nautilus
Computer:/// a chore to use.. especially when I have other USB media
mounted.

(I usually go straight for a link to /media now, but that can get messy
too)

[Bug 395299] Re: gdm 2.26 has no graphical configuration tool

2009-11-03 Thread Mark W
Who thinks up this crazy ideas? Pushing unfinished crap on users is the
stupid.

Ok, gdm needs to advance, but what was wrong with the usual migrationary
process of calling this new package gdm2 and installing that by default
to encourage migration, but keeping the old (working!) gdm1 in the
repositories for those who can't stand to lose the other features? This
has worked for Grub, and tons of other packages..

I'm slowly getting turned from ubuntu (which I've been both using and
advocating for years). With each release comes stupid regressions that
are wrought with politics and madness.

Please, consult ( listen) the USERS, not just the DEVELOPERS when
making major changes like this.. A little democracy wouldn't hurt here
and there..

[Bug 395299] Re: gdm 2.26 has no graphical configuration tool

2009-11-03 Thread Mark W
I (really, honestly!) mean no disrespect, but dev's please take a step back and
re-focus - don't take this stuff too personally.. I am a developer too, and I
work on free software. I've dealt with my fair share of frustrated (and
somewhat ungrateful) users.
It just appears that the Canonical desktop team doesn't fully appreciate how
much trouble regressions like these are causing users.

Well, the new gdm is plainly not quite ready for production use. Despite
how awesome it is, and how long it's been percolating, shouldn't it
still be in a PPA, not in a much-hyped mainstream release.

Ubuntu users are being used a little too much as guinea-pigs lately.
This isn't necessarily wrong, but a technology preview warning would
be nice, as opposed to the over-hyped countdown to these lesser sub
releases, compelling distro-junkies (like me:) to upgrade. It would of
course be nicer if LTS declarations of stable came around a little more
often (they sort of get outdated real fast), and it was well advertised
that all the 6 monthly's were technically beta release's (which they
kinda are).

Anyway, has anyone tried gdm-2.20 legacy? I'm assuming thats the
previous-previous generation?
I haven't yet been game to install it, as I've spent too many frustrating hours
dealing with lots of other karmic upgrade issues.
If it works, it would still be necessary to backport the Login screen component.

[Bug 395299] Re: gdm 2.26 has no graphical configuration tool

2009-11-03 Thread Mark W
Sebastian, please lighten up. I'm sorry to have to say this, but you
have created more negativity than others regarding this issue by pushing
down legitimate complaints.

* Rushing this version of GDM was a bad idea. *

GDM is an important package: It's (usually) the first user interactive
component a Ubuntu user is greeted with after BIOS/Grub. Take a look at
LinuxMint 7. They nailed it, the boot to login process is beautiful all
the way. New users can't wait to see what's next.. Even though it's
basically just Ubuntu with a (very) pretty desktop theme.

Anyway, the obvious lack of configurability with GDM noted here is just
one problem...

1. XDMCP - Some of us actually use thin-clients.
2. Security: Let's face it, users are more likely to stuff it up when
configuring manually.
3. The default is just plain ugly and should never have been approved. Sorry,
but black on brown sucks.
4. Being slowed down and forced to click on a name in an ugly userlist is
counter-intuative to useability.

During the upgrade process, Insufficient migrationary stuff was done
with the config files.. It should have been automatic at least regarding
the settings that do have a counterpart in the new configuration.

Okay, individual bugs could be created for each of these issues and
perhaps more constructively dealt with, but the real problem here
appears to be a little inflexibility of the human kind..

[Bug 47295] Corrupted dialogue buttons

2006-05-29 Thread Mark W. Tomlinson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libgtk2.0-0

(NOTE: I'm assuming libgtk2.0-0 is providing the button widgets.)

After installing the Dapper RC (Alternate) on my laptop (Sony VAIO PCG-
GRZ610), I opened update-manager in response to the updates available
balloon. I immediately noticed that the Help and Close buttons were
corrupted by a series of vertical lines of dots (I'm going to upload a
screenshot). As soon as I moved the pointer over the buttons (just
hover, no click), the corruption disappeared.

This behavior occurs in just about any dialogue that offers action
buttons to a greater or lesser degree. I just brought up About GNOME
and the Close button has a horizontal series of dots across the
bottom, which go away as soon as I point to it.

I'm running the out-of-the-box xorg configuration, which selected the
ati display driver. Please note that I do not see this behavior on my
desktop (nvidia-glx).

As stated earlier, I will upload the screenshot from the initial
observation. Please let me know what additional information might be
helpful.

** Affects: gtk+2.0 (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

** Attachment added: Screenshot - Software Updates

[Bug 44339] Re: Regression in usplash artwork

Revert! Revert!

Sorry, but this latest usplash just looks bad. Even on my desktop's

Keep trying new stuff, but at least make it something readable!

[Bug 29050] Re: cupsys does not automatically detect parallel printer

2006-05-10 Thread Mark W. Tomlinson
Vincent - loading ppdev makes my LaserJet visible as well. It now magically
appears when add printer is run. Hmm - I wonder if cupsys used to more closely
monitor specific signals from the parallel port?

Oh, well - as you say, it's a workaround, not a fix. However, it may provide
important information for the upstream folks (I see Martin has already passed
it on to 'em).

Thanks, Vincent!

[Bug 29050] Re: cupsys does not automatically detect parallel printer

2006-05-10 Thread Mark W. Tomlinson
Martin - here's some dmesg output, with comments:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ dmesg | grep lp0 ;Before loading ppdev;

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo modprobe ppdev

[4294843.725000] lp0: ECP mode

Also, before ppdev, my printer port shows as LPT #1; after, it shows as
hp:/par/HP_LaserJet_6P?device=/dev/parport0 (HP HP_LaserJet_6P).

If that's any help...

To experiment, I added ppdev to my /etc/modules file. Now when I boot the
systems sees my printer straightaway.

Is there a problem with leaving /etc/modules that way temporarily? I'm not
seeing any adverse behavior...yet.

[Bug 29050] Re: cupsys does not automatically detect parallel printer

2006-04-26 Thread Mark W. Tomlinson
Martin - my system supports 4 parallel port modes: output only, bi-directional,
EPP and ECP. None of the settings cause any change in the behavior of cupsys
(no printer found). I added comments (;) to my terminal output:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ dmesg|grep lp0 ;Output only mode
[4294688.737000] lp0: using parport0 (interrupt-driven).
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ dmesg|grep lp0 ;Bi-directional mode

[4294688.682000] lp0: using parport0 (interrupt-driven).
[4294764.613000] lp0: ECP mode
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

Also, my BIOS allows 3 separate parallel port states: disabled, enabled (select
I/O, IRQ DMA) and auto. Again, choosing between enabled and auto made no
difference.

[Bug 29050] Re: cupsys does not automatically detect parallel printer

2006-04-03 Thread Mark W. Tomlinson
Martin - that's correct. Quickest way to clarify would be to check the
AddPrinter dialogue screenshots I previously attached, but:

In Breezy, when I selected Add a printer, my LaserJet-6p was automatically
identified under Use a detected printer. In Dapper, the same action yields
no printer detected - I have to manually select the port (LPT #1). Then, the
driver selection proceeds the same as under Breezy.

One other note - gnome-cups-manager is VERY slow. I just opened it and
selected Properties for my default printer and it took c. 30 seconds to bring
up the properties dialogue. I'd thought it sluggish before but this is a new
level of slow. Don't know if it's related or not...

[Bug 29050] cupsys cannot access printer/scanner device

2006-03-24 Thread Mark W. Tomlinson
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/29050

Comment:
I see that the status on this bug has been changed to fix released. The
update to cupsys may have fixed the multifunction, USB-connected device issue,
but the problem still remains that my parallel-connected printer, which was
recognized IDed by Breezy, doesn't seem to exist for Dapper.

This is not a showstopper (I can make my printer work). But I think
expecting Dapper to at least work as well as Breezy is not unreasonable.

[Bug 28799] Weather applet can't be added to panel.

2006-01-21 Thread Mark W. Tomlinson
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/28799

Comment:
Okay, I ran /usr/lib/gnome-applets/gweather-applet-2 from a terminal
(both normal and sudo), tried to add it to the panel and got The
Application gweather-applet-2 has quit unexpectedly. It then went
into the same error/reload cycle I described originally.

Sorry, I don't know what run it gdb means - if there are directions
somewhere, I'll be glad to try it.

[Bug 29050] 6.04 (Dapper) doesn't recognize working printer

2006-01-19 Thread Mark W. Tomlinson
Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/29050

Affects: gnome-cups-manager (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
NOTE: I'm guessing as to the faulty package!

Bring up SystemAdministrationPrintingNew Printer, Local Printer is
already selected but Use a detected printer is greyed out with No
printers detected in the selection box. Use another printer by
specifying a port is selected but the drop-down box contains hp
no_device_found. I can manually configure the printer (LPT #1, HPLIP,
HP LaserJet 6p driver) but this setup was recognized by 5.10 (Breezy)
straightaway.

It's an HP LaserJet 6p connected to the only parallel port on my Intel
D865GLC motherboard. Dapper is fully upgraded as of c. 1 hour ago.
