[Bug 1111429] Re: Evince does not display some fonts: Error: could not create type1 face some font thing failed - okular, epdfview and zathura also affected by this issue.

2014-05-17 Thread Michael Mess
After upgrade to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS:

Testing the file DOSB_Pruefungswegweiser_Komplett_web_11_12.pdf with
various pdf viewers again after upgrading to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.

 * evince: OK
 * okular: OK
 * epdfview: OK
 * xpdf: OK
 * zathura: OK

Thus this bug seem to be fixed with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.

[Bug 1307140] Re: Obex file transfer via bluetooth hangs

2014-04-13 Thread Michael Mess
Attached screenshot of file copy process.

The File operations window will be redrawn when necessary, but it's
content does not change after the file transfer got frozen, even the
remaining time will not be updated

I would expect that the word stalled is displayed, as long as the
transfer does not proceed.

Also I would expect that the file transport recovers from beeing
stalled.

[Bug 1307140] Re: Obex file transfer via bluetooth hangs

2014-04-13 Thread Michael Mess
The hang condition, could that be something like a deadlock via the bluetooth
communication that can be broken only by terminating the bluetooth connection?
Maybe the computer is waiting for something (new data?) without timeout, but
the counter party still wants previous data to be acknowledged before sending
new data but the computer cannot do this while waiting for new data?
As I didn't have a look at the code, this is all speculation.

2013-11-03 Thread Michael Mess
According to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LTS Ubuntu 12.04 should receive bug
fixes until 2017.

Thus there should be an update to a newer version of this package which
hopefully doesn't have this bug.

[Bug 1201489] [NEW] gnome-terminal hangs after executing tail -f for some time with plenty of output

2013-07-15 Thread Michael Mess
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1) Open gnome-terminal with bash shell.

2) type tail -f someLogFile

3) Let it run with plenty of output for a long time.

Result:

Tail output will suddenly stop.

Stracing the bash process shows:
mm@musca:~ $ sudo strace -p 31412
[sudo] password for mm:
Process 31412 attached - interrupt to quit
wait4(-1,

Stracing the tail process shows:
sudo strace -p 17298
[sudo] password for mm:
Process 17298 attached - interrupt to quit
write(1, ull;null;null;null;0;null;eurex;..., 4515^C unfinished ...
Process 17298 detached

It seems that the processes are somehow deadlocked.
After killing the tail process, the tail died, but the gnome-terminal stayed
unusable.

mm@musca:~ $ sudo strace -p 31412
[sudo] password for mm:
Process 31412 attached - interrupt to quit
wait4(-1, [{WIFSIGNALED(s)  WTERMSIG(s) == SIGTERM}], WSTOPPED|WCONTINUED,
NULL) = 17298
rt_sigprocmask(SIG_BLOCK, [CHLD TSTP TTIN TTOU], [CHLD], 8) = 0

ioctl(255, TIOCGWINSZ, {ws_row=63, ws_col=211, ws_xpixel=0, ws_ypixel=0}) = 0
write(2, Terminated\n, 11

Choosing Terminal-Reset from gnome-terminal menu did not help.

Choosing Terminal-Reset And Clear from gnome-terminal menu made the
window usable again..

Probably there is a problem with a buffer overflow, etc.
I am using a scrollback of 100 lines.
The output should have been sufficient to fill this buffer.

 * xpdf uses libpoppler19 0.18.4-1ubuntu3.1, but not libcairo.
 * evince uses
   - libpoppler-glib8 0.18.4-1ubuntu3
   - libpoppler19 0.18.4-1ubuntu3
   - libcairo-gobject2 1.10.2-6.1ubuntu3
   - libcairo2 1.10.2-6.1ubuntu3

Maybe this is libpoppler19 0.18.4-1ubuntu3.1 related.

[Bug 1184328] Re: xpdf crashes with SIGSEGV in GlobalParams::findFontFile()

2013-05-26 Thread Michael Mess
The crash could be probably caused by two bugs:
 - One bug might be an issue with type1 fonts like in Bug 429 occuring in
the poppler library.
 - Another bug is that the issue above is not handled well and lets xpdf crash.

Please correct me, if I am wrong.

xpdf seems to crash also for other files which are displayed correctly
with evince, epdfview, okular and zathura (Bug 429).

This means that the xpdf crash seems to have a different cause than the
issues in Bug 429.

[Bug 1111429] [NEW] Evince does not display some fonts: Error: could not create type1 face some font thing failed

2013-01-31 Thread Michael Mess
Public bug reported:

Some documents are displayed incompletely by evince.

Some text is missing, but this text can be marked and appears like it would be
spaces only, but copy and paste works well and the correct text appears when

The program epdfview is also affected and the document looks similar
(There are some coloring differences), thus it seems to be a problem of
a commonly used library.

[Bug 1094086] [NEW] Bluetooth: Computer running Ubuntu 12.04 with visible-switch turned on not visible for other bluetooth devices

2012-12-27 Thread Michael Mess
Public bug reported:

While connecting to other bluetooth devices works, it is not possible to
access the computer running Ubuntu 12.04 via bluetooth from other
devices, because it is not visible in the network.

Visible from the bluetooth settings menu is turned on, thus the computer
should be visible for other devices when searching for devices.
Other devices can be paired with the computer when the initiative comes from
the computer (The computer can see other devices which are visible).

Expected behaviour would be that the computer is visible for other
devices when the Visible-Switch is turned on.

[Bug 1094090] [NEW] nautilus crashes with SIGSEGV when pasting folders with files into an open bluetooth-browse-files window

2012-12-27 Thread Michael Mess
Public bug reported:

This error seems not always reproducable, but here are steps to
reproduce:

1) Select a local folder with files to copy in nautilus.
2) Copy the folder
3) Open a new window via Bluetooth-Device-Browse Files...
4) Choose the folder where to copy the files to on the bluetooth device (mobile
phone).
5) RightClick in it and select Paste... (If Paste is disabled there, choose
Paste from the edit menu bar entry.)

nautilus crashes and the crash-report-dialog appears.

[Bug 258083] Re: F-Spot - Error connecting to camera. Could not lock the device

2012-04-06 Thread Michael Mess
I have the same issue with a KODAK EASYSHARE MINI Camera M200 camera
on ubuntu 10.0.4 LTS (Lucid Lynx).

Accessing with nautilus sometimes works, but then copying all photos to hard
disk will result in a hang after some files have been copied slowly with some
bursts where speed is high, later showing an error that the copy failed.
Then the camera needs to be disconnected and reconnected first, before it can
be accessed again.

Why the connection is so unreliable?

When the camera is mounted, df doesn't show the mounted directory.
Is it not possible to access it like a USB hard drive and then use shell
commands to copy/move files?

[Bug 258083] Re: F-Spot - Error connecting to camera. Could not lock the device

2012-04-06 Thread Michael Mess
I think that the issue is caused by a deadlock somewhere in the driver
for communicating with the camera and not caused by the application
(FSpot, Nautilus) using the connection to the camera.

If I connect the camera, I get asked if I want to start FSpot.

When I ignore the dialog or click Cancel and just access with
nautilus, the issue arises after copying some files. Even the preview
won't show all pictures, but it is then still possible to start copying
files and some of them are successfully copied before the copy hangs and
times out.

Re: [Bug 197589] Re: Numeric keypad no longer works after upgrade

2009-01-18 Thread Michael Mess
Hi

If the number keys move the mouse arrow, then try Shift-NumLock to
switch to the normal behaviour (entering numbers with NumLock on or
cursor keys with NumLock off).

I hope, this helps,

Michael

[Bug 197589] Re: Numeric keypad no longer works after upgrade

2008-11-16 Thread Michael Mess
Hi,

I had the problem with the Keypad-mouse-control enabled today, too,
after my children were playing with the keyboard when the screensaver
was on (password locked).

Now I know, there is SHIFT-NUMLOCK key combination to toggle the state of the
feature.
The feature can be toggled on/off using this key combination, even when the
session is locked.
On relogin, the original state is not restored, so the feature was still
enabled when I relogged in
and this was letting me wonder how my children were able to get my keyboard
settings broken
without access to system configuration tools, as the setting was persistent,
even restarting X11
or a reboot didn't help...

So I think it is a bug, when the settings can be changed in a persistent
way even on a password locked screen, because it enables an unauthorized
user to change your keyboard settings.

I can confirm this bug.
The tooltip appears often, but not always.
Sometimes the tooltip will be shown just as a white empty box of the same size.
Hardware: Mainboard Asus P5K with Core2Quad, Nvidia Geforce with envy driver.
Hibernate and resume works well despite of the error message.
