[Bug 685215] Re: users-admin hangs immediately when run as root
Sorry, I should have made clear I was speaking from an upstream (GNOME) point of view. I've not said Ubuntu wouldn't fix the problem (even if I know they won't). Ubuntu ships a version of users-admin that's more than a year old, so even if I fixed things upstream you wouldn't notice. My advice (to Ubuntu) is that they move to the new GNOME control center users applet. As for the specific problem of running as root, AFAIK any newly installed system comes with a non-root admin account. And something I *did* fix in users-admin when it was still developed is that it will not allow you to remove the last admin account. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-system-tools in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/685215 Title: users-admin hangs immediately when run as root To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-system-tools/+bug/685215/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 137527] Re: Unhelpful response when inserting encrypted DVD in default installation
Matthew: the automated codec installation already exists in Totem actually. Just try to open a AAC file, and it will prompt you to install the codec. The Fluendo DVD plugin should just be registered with the correct information (to say: hey, I read encrypted DVDs), and Totem should query for such plugins. This is probably not done ATM upstream because only Ubuntu sells the Fluendo plugin by default, but would likely be easy to do. AFAIK, Totem is already smart enough to start playing right after the codec has been installed. [Bug 137527] Re: Unhelpful response when inserting encrypted DVD in default installation
OK, the problem is, Fluendo doesn't sell a codec, but a full-fledged DVD player that competes with Totem. So we can't install the required codecs transparently. Something to check, though, is whether installing their DVD player is enough to allow GStreamer apps like Totem to read encrypted DVDs too. I suppose it's the case. This would mean the Fluendo DVD player package could be technically advertised as a plugin, which would allow it to be installed from Totem. The control center User accounts applets is the successor, but it doesn't show groups to the user. Ideally, choosing whether users are Admins or Normal should be enough for everything. If people need to user groups, they must be able to use the command line, because only these operations require it anyway (and are only hacks). users-admin still lives and can be used by admins that would need to set user groups, but it's not really good for that since e.g. it doesn't handle LDAP nor mass configuration. [Bug 221363] Re: Policy Kit Unlock Buttons Greyed Out when using NX / VNC / LTSP
Derek: The criteria is that you hit this bug on a certain package. ;-) I think most packages should be fixed, even if a small minority should keep using allow_active: it can only be useful when e.g. managing hardware, sound, mounted devices, etc. In these cases, only the current user should be allowed to run the action. But in most cases, it's too much of a restriction, and if you feel the need for the change, it's probably that it should happen. One way to find these packages is to run grep -R allow_anyno /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/ and then check each file and try to guess whether the use of allow_active only is legetimate or not. Then, file a bug uptsream and open a bug watch here. Ben: One reason why GDM devs haven't replied can be that upstream's 3.0 uses GSettings for gdmsetup, and doesn't suffer from the bug. Ubuntu would need to check that. Other maintainers might be more responsive. If you fear that people will make the same mistake in the future, then you can write a simple patch the the Polkit tutorial. [Bug 789333] Re: users-admin crashed with SIGABRT in g_option_context_parse()
users-admin isn't part of the stock GNOME3 experience, but it should work if you still need it rather than the new users control panel. The crash here comes from a bad packaging/build that mixes GTK2 and GTK3 symbols: #2 0x7f87f66eca22 in g_logv (log_domain=0x7f87f95c779b Gtk, log_level=value optimized out, format=0x7f87f9659d88 GTK+ 2.x symbols detected. [Bug 643153] Re: users-admin hangs when run as root
The fact that you can log in as root doesn't mean you should. GDM doesn't show the root user, and the root account is disabled by default on Ubuntu, so you must have found this idea by yourself. AFAIK, recovery mode only starts a console, so, yes, you should either fix things from the console, or run a graphical session as a normal user. If you're able to run a session as root, you may as well run it as a normal user with admin rights. There's no reason to run a X session as root as it is dangerous and doesn't make anything possible that you can't do as normal session after authentication via PolicyKit. [Bug 766040] Re: gnome-system-tools version 2.32.0-0ubuntu7 failed to build on amd64
Well, it's just that the bug description says Failed to build, so that's what I was looking for in the build log. So it's actually just a warning. This kind of report always useful, but I'm not aware of any crash on 64-bit systems, and this package hasn't changed since Maverick (that code even hasn't been touched for ages). So it's indeed just a prototype issue. As the gnome-system-tools are deprecated I don't plan to fix this warning upstream. So I'm not sure it makes sense for Ubuntu to fix that before Natty is out. Indeed the wording could be improved, but I don't think I'll make another upstream release of the gnome-system-tools now that they are deprecated. But I've opened a bug[1 ] against gnome-control-center, which replaces users-admin in GNOME 3 and uses the same string. If so, I need details, merely reopening is pointless. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-system-tools in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/661272 Title: changing user password causes hang in users-admin -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 740312] Re: Ignores presses of Add and Advanced Settings
It should be started when you log in, most likely you disabled it from System-Preferences-Startup applications. Closing because it's not a bug, the PolicyKit authentication agent should never be disabled. We could show an error message, but it's not going to happen in users-admin. ** Changed in: gnome-system-tools (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-system-tools in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/740312 Title: Ignores presses of Add and Advanced Settings -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 742598] Re: users-admin - newly added user is disabled when using the generated password option
Yes, this has been fixed upstream since version 2.91.1. Commit is adbfff7, which could quite easily be backported (a few lines have been touched). ** Changed in: gnome-system-tools (Ubuntu) Status: New = Triaged ** Also affects: gst Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: gnome-system-tools (Ubuntu) Status: Triaged = Fix Released ** Changed in: gnome-system-tools (Ubuntu) Status: Fix Released = Triaged ** Changed in: gst Status: New = Fix Released -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-system-tools in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/742598 Title: users-admin - newly added user is disabled when using the generated password option -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 740312] Re: Ignores presses of Add and Advanced Settings
I suspect you don't have a PolicyKit authentication agent running. What's the output of: ps ax|grep polkit And does running /usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication- agent-1 solve the problem? The fact that nor error is reported is another issue, but I don't think it will be fixed because users-admin is going to be replaced soon. ** Changed in: gnome-system-tools (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete ** Changed in: gnome-system-tools (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Medium -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-system-tools in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/740312 Title: Ignores presses of Add and Advanced Settings -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
