[Bug 1882781] Re: Gnome 3.36.2 leaking in 20.04
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1856838 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1856838 I haven't been running any of the weather widgets for a while now and I had to do another reset of gnome just to get window animation speeds back to normal. This issue is definitely present on a vanilla configuration. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-shell in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1882781 Title: Gnome 3.36.2 leaking in 20.04 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1882781/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 1882781] [NEW] Gnome 3.36.2 leaking in 20.04
Public bug reported: I've noticed lately that the performance of the UI in Gnome 3.36.2 seems to decay with uptime. The most obvious manifestation is that over time, window animations have a delay and feel "sticky". Applications themselves seem unaffected. When I tell gnome to switch workspaces, there's about a half second to full second delay before the animation happens. This also applies to things like pressing the meta key to show all my windows or pressing alt-tab. Each one appears to share the same delay. I'm running a fairly unremarkable desktop setup using vanilla gnome on Ubuntu 20.04. My research on this issue seems to indicate that there were memory leak issues in 18.xx versions of the OS, but that those were supposedly fixed. The only thing I can conclude at this point is that a new issue has emerged, there was a regression, or the original fix didn't work. The animation delay is sapping productivity to the point that I eventually have to reboot my system. The gnome-shell process definitely leaks over time as it starts around ~300mb and if left for a day will sit at ~600mb or more. --- Regarding my overall hardware and nominal state of my system, I'm experiencing this issue even as I'm creating this question. I'm running the stock/vanilla gnome desktop, not the ubuntu customized one. My system has 32gb of RAM, only 6gb of which are in use currently. My CPU usage fluctuates across 12 vcores up to 20% max. I have an RTX 2060 for my GPU. At least as best as I can tell, I see no issue with the amount of resources gnome-shell is getting right now. --- There also appear to be other accounts of this same issue building up since the release of 20.04. It's clear that this is a widespread issue: https://www.reddit.com/r/gnome/comments/fxffcd/gnome_shell_336_in_ubuntu_2004_still_leaks/ I would treat this with some urgency as for regular users this bug renders the OS completely unusable. [Bug 1174101] [NEW] Only way to bookmark is through hotkeys.
Public bug reported: The only way I can add a bookmark currently is through a totally un- hinted and undocumented hotkey (ctrl-d). This should show up in the menus somewhere or at least be achievable by dragging a folder to the sidebar. I also think it would be *less* confusing if the bookmark list was blended under the Places heading. Otherwise I have to scroll past Devices just to see folders I've personally configured to be promptly available. This would stop the feature from contradicting a good UX because obviously the user would want the deliberately-made bookmark to be more readily available than other items. [Bug 885804] Re: Always on Visible Workspace lost intermittently...
English is my first language and I've done my best to re-read the problem description here. I think it is comprehensive enough to reproduce the issue. In point form: o Have an open Empathy chat window. o Tell the window to remain visible on all workspaces. o Double click the Empathy contact list to begin a new conversation with a *different* contact. o Switch workspaces. The window should stay on all workspaces, but in my case is *losing* its sticky-state. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to empathy in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/885804 Title: Always on Visible Workspace lost intermittently... [Bug 923124] Re: Control-C copy shortcut doesn't work in Empathy Windows
Brian, of course and I'm sorry I had to take the approach that I did. Although I think you can obviously see from how this bug was traiged that no sensible process was implemented in the first place. The only thing I changed the status for was to ensure that it didn't get terminated through routine dismissals. I only worry now how many other bugs out there have been handled in such a fashion and how this may be affecting Ubuntu's overall quality. [Bug 885804] [NEW] Always on Visible Workspace lost intermittently...
Public bug reported: It looks like when I tell an Empathy window to stay visible on all workspaces, the instruction is sometimes lost. My best guess would be whenever a new tab is added. [Bug 783269] [NEW] No option to launch multiple home folder instances on Unity bar
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus While the Unity bar is meant to hold running applications that double as launchers, the extended menu functionality to create new instances isn't in place. [Bug 555986] [NEW] Display resolution options too low.
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-control-center Every system that I'm running has the list of available resolutions capped at a ridiculously small and outdated maximum. On my laptop with intel video, it's 800x600, yet when the same 19 CRT is hooked up to one of my desktops with a vanta in it, the maximum is 1024x768. Both of these maximum options are obviously wrong as I have operated this monitor with both of these machines (and others) at significantly higher desktop resolutions. I hope this bug gets some attention as I feel it is somewhat severe and will result in a lot of bad impressions about Ubuntu considering this hasn't been a problem in the past. (I also wish we'd stop breaking things that have been working for ages with each release) ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04 Package: gnome-control-center 1:2.30.0-0ubuntu3 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.32-19.28-generic-pae 2.6.32.10+drm33.1 Uname: Linux 2.6.32-19-generic-pae i686 Architecture: i386 Date: Mon Apr 5 15:11:02 2010 ExecutablePath: /usr/bin/gnome-display-properties InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx - Beta i386 (20100318) ProcEnviron: LANG=en_CA.utf8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: gnome-control-center XsessionErrors: (polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1:1115): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_once_init_leave: assertion `initialization_value != 0' failed (gnome-display-properties:1257): Gtk-WARNING **: Ignoring the separator setting (gnome-display-properties:1257): Gtk-WARNING **: No object called: (gnome-display-properties:1523): Gtk-WARNING **: Ignoring the separator setting (gnome-display-properties:1523): Gtk-WARNING **: No object called: ** Affects: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: apport-bug i386 lucid -- Display resolution options too low. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/555986 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

This bug is also currently affecting 10.04 Lucid Lynx. I've seen numerous accounts of this issue all over the Ubuntu forums and here in launchpad. [Bug 461325] [NEW] Switching between visual effect settings wipes out custom compiz config...
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-control-center The default (and only) UI to control desktop effects mistakenly wipes out compiz profiles that have been customized. Because the only way to manipulate the on/off state is through the appearance tool, the tool should simply turn compiz on or off. Detail levels should be chosen based on a three choice radio group: o Simple o Fancy o Previous/Custom Then turning compiz on and off would be further clarified. Right now the dialog is forcing not just the state of compiz, but also the configuration, which is misleading. Also, when I open up alsamixer, if I press the volume up key, it peggs the LFE and PCM volumes to the top before gradually increasing the master channel...
