[Bug 1882781] Re: Gnome 3.36.2 leaking in 20.04

2020-06-17 Thread Omega
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1856838 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1856838

I haven't been running any of the weather widgets for a while now and I
had to do another reset of gnome just to get window animation speeds
back to normal.

This issue is definitely present on a vanilla configuration.

[Bug 1882781] [NEW] Gnome 3.36.2 leaking in 20.04

2020-06-09 Thread Omega
Public bug reported:

I've noticed lately that the performance of the UI in Gnome 3.36.2 seems
to decay with uptime.

The most obvious manifestation is that over time, window animations have
a delay and feel "sticky". Applications themselves seem unaffected. When
I tell gnome to switch workspaces, there's about a half second to full
second delay before the animation happens. This also applies to things
like pressing the meta key to show all my windows or pressing alt-tab.
Each one appears to share the same delay.

I'm running a fairly unremarkable desktop setup using vanilla gnome on
Ubuntu 20.04.

My research on this issue seems to indicate that there were memory leak
issues in 18.xx versions of the OS, but that those were supposedly
fixed. The only thing I can conclude at this point is that a new issue
has emerged, there was a regression, or the original fix didn't work.

The animation delay is sapping productivity to the point that I
eventually have to reboot my system. The gnome-shell process definitely
leaks over time as it starts around ~300mb and if left for a day will
sit at ~600mb or more.

---

Regarding my overall hardware and nominal state of my system, I'm
experiencing this issue even as I'm creating this question. I'm running
the stock/vanilla gnome desktop, not the ubuntu customized one.

My system has 32gb of RAM, only 6gb of which are in use currently. My
CPU usage fluctuates across 12 vcores up to 20% max. I have an RTX 2060
for my GPU.

At least as best as I can tell, I see no issue with the amount of
resources gnome-shell is getting right now. 

---

There also appear to be other accounts of this same issue building up
since the release of 20.04. It's clear that this is a widespread issue:
https://www.reddit.com/r/gnome/comments/fxffcd/gnome_shell_336_in_ubuntu_2004_still_leaks/

I would treat this with some urgency as for regular users this bug
renders the OS completely unusable.

[Bug 1174101] [NEW] Only way to bookmark is through hotkeys.

2013-04-28 Thread Omega
Public bug reported:

The only way I can add a bookmark currently is through a totally un-
hinted and undocumented hotkey (ctrl-d).

This should show up in the menus somewhere or at least be achievable by
dragging a folder to the sidebar.

I also think it would be *less* confusing if the bookmark list was
blended under the Places heading. Otherwise I have to scroll past
Devices just to see folders I've personally configured to be promptly
available. This would stop the feature from contradicting a good UX
because obviously the user would want the deliberately-made bookmark to
be more readily available than other items.

[Bug 1165761] [NEW] Gnome settings keeps resetting my key bindings

2013-04-07 Thread Omega
Public bug reported:

I configure my number pad for desktop switching navigation, but gnome
settings keeps resetting this every time I log in.

I have no idea why it keeps doing this, but all I do is reconfigure the
settings each time I log in. Would be nice if this was retained
permanently instead of being constantly reset without my consent.

[Bug 1091486] [NEW] No UI feedback when ripping discs

2012-12-17 Thread Omega
Public bug reported:

There is little to no UI feedback as to whether a rip is actually in

[Bug 885804] Re: Always on Visible Workspace lost intermittently...

Doubtful. You may want to assign it to the Unity Empathy teams in
general to investigate as it happens with the 2D compositer.

This information should be readily available in my system profile report
that's submitted with this bug.

[Bug 923124] Re: Control-C copy shortcut doesn't work in Empathy Windows

2012-02-10 Thread Omega
Apologies to Mark for including you. I just don't see any other way to
bring this up.

The way this bug has been triaged just seems to guarantee lots of
deflected issues. Naturally it's fine if the issue has already been
corrected. But most users aren't going to know/bother to get the latest
release of Empathy unless it involves a distro upgrade.

[Bug 885804] Re: Always on Visible Workspace lost intermittently...

2012-02-10 Thread Omega
English is my first language and I've done my best to re-read the
problem description here. I think it is comprehensive enough to
reproduce the issue.

In point form:

o Have an open Empathy chat window.
o Tell the window to remain visible on all workspaces.
o Double click the Empathy contact list to begin a new conversation with a
*different* contact.
o Switch workspaces.

The window should stay on all workspaces, but in my case is *losing* its
sticky-state.

[Bug 923124] Re: Control-C copy shortcut doesn't work in Empathy Windows

2012-02-10 Thread Omega
Brian, of course and I'm sorry I had to take the approach that I did.
Although I think you can obviously see from how this bug was traiged
that no sensible process was implemented in the first place. The only
thing I changed the status for was to ensure that it didn't get
terminated through routine dismissals.

I only worry now how many other bugs out there have been handled in such
a fashion and how this may be affecting Ubuntu's overall quality. All
the tiny workflows and use cases that actually end up defining many
peoples' frustrations and first impressions of Ubuntu are probably lost
like this!

[Bug 923126] [NEW] Favourited IRC chats should go in contact list.

2012-01-28 Thread Omega
Public bug reported:

IRC chats that I favourite in Empathy should be added to the contact
list so that I don't have to go muddling through the top bar menus to
find them. This would also help me manage them because it'll give me
somewhere to do context operations on them without having to use the
manage-favourites dialog.

[Bug 885804] [NEW] Always on Visible Workspace lost intermittently...

2011-11-03 Thread Omega
Public bug reported:

It looks like when I tell an Empathy window to stay visible on all
workspaces, the instruction is sometimes lost. My best guess would be
whenever a new tab is added.

It would be nice if this setting would stop being forgotten every time I
add a chat as it's forcing me to re-pin the window each time. Also what
would be nice would be if pinned windows retained their pinning
preference after being closed for when they next open.

Part bug, part feature. But definitely a bug.

[Bug 783269] [NEW] No option to launch multiple home folder instances on Unity bar

2011-05-15 Thread Omega
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

While the Unity bar is meant to hold running applications that double as
launchers, the extended menu functionality to create new instances isn't
in place. When I want to start cruising around my filesystem with
Nautilus, I usually just start with the home folder and go from there in
a new window.

Of course, when I already have a window open, all the Unity launcher
does is bring it to the foreground.

What I'd like to see is a default action that's performed when a Unity
menu item is double clicked and for Nautilus to support this with a
open a new window action.

This is both a Unity and Nautilus issue. On one end, Unity doesn't have
a double-click action that can be assigned defaults. And on the other,
Nautilus doesn't even have a right-click menu option to create a new
window in the Unity menu bar.

[Bug 555986] [NEW] Display resolution options too low.

2010-04-05 Thread Omega
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

Every system that I'm running has the list of available resolutions
capped at a ridiculously small and outdated maximum.

On my laptop with intel video, it's 800x600, yet when the same 19 CRT
is hooked up to one of my desktops with a vanta in it, the maximum is
1024x768.

Both of these maximum options are obviously wrong as I have operated
this monitor with both of these machines (and others) at significantly
higher desktop resolutions.

I hope this bug gets some attention as I feel it is somewhat severe and
will result in a lot of bad impressions about Ubuntu considering this
hasn't been a problem in the past.

(I also wish we'd stop breaking things that have been working for ages
with each release)

[Bug 457775] Re: Volume control is considerably less useful than Jaunty

2010-04-05 Thread Omega
This bug is also currently affecting 10.04 Lucid Lynx.
I've seen numerous accounts of this issue all over the Ubuntu forums and here
in launchpad.

In my case, it appears to be due to my mixer having an LFE in the wrong
order.

Is there no way we can have Ubuntu autodetect this and set the correct
flag?

[Bug 551836] [NEW] volume control either too loud or silent

2010-03-30 Thread Omega
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-media

I'm running on an Inspiron 9400 laptop.

In both Ubuntu 10.04beta and 9.10, when I attempt to shift my volume,

Public bug reported:

I run my system at either 1920x1200 or 1920x1080 and none of my

[Bug 461325] [NEW] Switching between visual effect settings wipes out custom compiz config...

2009-10-26 Thread Omega
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

The default (and only) UI to control desktop effects mistakenly wipes
out compiz profiles that have been customized.

Because the only way to manipulate the on/off state is through the
appearance tool, the tool should simply turn compiz on or off.

Detail levels should be chosen based on a three choice radio group:

o Simple
o Fancy
o Previous/Custom

Then turning compiz on and off would be further clarified. Right now
the dialog is forcing not just the state of compiz, but also the
configuration, which is misleading.

[Bug 248791] Re: Advanced Desktop Effects Settings (compiz) settings lost when change to metacity then back to compiz

2009-10-26 Thread Omega
This is not an invalid bug, we need a way to switch compiz on and off
when running 3D full screen applications, otherwise performance is
severely hindered.

Having to reset all our desktop settings each time this UI is touched
makese no sense considering it's the only default provided. People will
more often than not assume the behaviour is intentional and be
frustrated.

[Bug 457775] Re: Volume control is considerably less useful than Jaunty

2009-10-25 Thread Omega
Also, when I open up alsamixer, if I press the volume up key, it peggs
the LFE and PCM volumes to the top before gradually increasing the
master channel...

This probably isn't the best way of aggregating the three controls
together and is more than likely what is causing my sound to cut out
before my UI slider is all the way to zero...

Is it possible that the fact I had my volume hotkeys bound to both the

Where would I go to clear this?

[Bug 457775] [NEW] Volume control is considerably less useful than Jaunty

2009-10-21 Thread Omega
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-media

When I try to adjust volume in gnome, it mutes when I'm still a ~6th
from the lowest setting.

I've also lost multiple mixer tracks and a substantial degree of fine-
grained control over my system's volume. This results in most
applications being either too loud or too quiet.

I'm sadly disappointed by the volume control in karmic and I worry this
could be a big issue for Karmic if it isn't addressed soon!
