[Bug 1292041] Re: Lockscreen doesn't turn off the screen

2014-03-31 Thread Pausanias
Is there a workaround?

Better question: is there any hope of GNOME developers *not* breaking
critical functionality from release to release? After 12 years with
Ubuntu, I can come up with a huge list of extremely frustrating and
sometimes downright dangerous regressions, almost all of them in GNOME,
and almost all of them affecting a feature that was working perfectly
well in a previous release.

[Bug 994395] Re: cannot do a VNC connection over an ssh tunnel in precise

I found that manually establishing a ssh tunnel via terminal and then
logging in to localhost DOES work so, this is definitely a problem with
vinagre.

Yet another example of the frequent regressions that happen in GNOME
packages.

[Bug 558674] Re: Open file dialog malfunctions in lucid

2011-10-27 Thread Pausanias
Walter, I just read that document. I need to be a computer scientist
just to decipher that thing. I am not a community member, coder, or
someone with the time to follow all that procedure.

Look, I'm just a poor LTS user. I bought into the whole promise of
Ubuntu that while LTS is supposed to lack new features, it would fix
critical bugs. This is a critical bug with LTS. It's been fixed
upstream. It causes the file open dialog to behave in an erratic and
potentially harmful way. And no one is willing to bring it back to LTS?

If there isn't a regular Ubuntu dev, whether paid or volunteer, who
recognizes how important this bug is, then I give up on Ubuntu. Even
worse, if you do recognize how important this bug is to fix, but lack
the willingness to put your expertise into use for 2 minutes to follow
that procedure of which you just spoke, then I give up on Ubuntu even
worse. This isn't a case of an unknown random bug which can't be
reproduced, it is the case of a bug which has been recognized by
upstream and for which there is a specific patch.

[Bug 558674] Re: Open file dialog malfunctions in lucid

2011-06-11 Thread Pausanias
You have got to be kidding me. What is the point of LTS then? I cannot
simply update my machine. I am running LTS in a production
environment. I am supposed to be relying on the vaunted rock-solid
stability of LTS. Lucid has several years to go in its life span.

It speaks volumes about Ubuntu's commitment to LTS that you would even
post that. If Canonical does not have the resources to support LTS
properly---especially for a bug where something as basic as the file
open dialog is malfunctioning in an insidious and potentially harmful
way---then do not support it at all. Do not make the claim of LTS.

[Bug 558674] Re: Open file dialog malfunctions in lucid

2011-06-10 Thread Pausanias
Shame on you, Ubuntu, for leaving this bug unfixed nine months after it
was (supposedly) fixed upstream. Is this supposed to be a rock-solid LTS
operating system, where something as critical as the file open dialog
doesn't even work properly? Leaving the importance low when there is
the possibility of uploading the wrong file to a work-critical website?
Are you kidding me?

Shame on you. Shame on you. The thing that really puzzles me is that
there must be so many Canonical workers/Ubuntu volunteers packaging
upstream fixes... I mean I must have installed at least 1000 updates to
packages from upstream since October 10th. But a bug fixed upstream that
affects one of the most basic, fundamental UI functions... low priority.
Low priority!

I've been with you guys since the days of Warty. What has happened to
you?

[Bug 626142] [NEW] evince will not launch external programs in presentation mode

2010-08-29 Thread Pausanias
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

PROBLEM: when viewing a PDF file with associated external content, such
as a movie, evince will launch the external helper application when in
normal or full screen mode, but will not do so in presentation mode.
When in normal or full screen mode, the mouse pointer changes from an
arrow to a finger, and the tooltip launch .. will appear. When in
presentation mode, the mouse pointer never changes shape, and clicking
on the embedded link merely causes the presentation to advance to the
next page.

EXPECTED BEHAVIOR: evince should launch the external application in
presentation mode, the same way it does in the normal and full screen
modes.

TO REPRODUCE: Download attachment. Unpack in separate folder. Open
test.pdf with evince. Clicking on the image on page 2 will launch the
movie storm.mov in normal and full screen modes. It will fail to do so
in presentation mode.

[Bug 614507] [NEW] In muti-user environment, USB media mounted to random user

2010-08-06 Thread Pausanias
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

Problem:

When multiple users are logged in, and the console user plugs in an
external USB drive, GNOME randomly selects a user to automount the drive
on, instead of the console user. In multi-partition drives, different
partitions are mounted to different users. The console user receives a
dialog box with error in the style of /dev/sdf3 is busy whenever a
partition is mounted to a non-console user.

[Bug 462419] [NEW] evince apparmor profile prevents movies from opening

2009-10-27 Thread Pausanias
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

Trying to open a movie with vlc or totem from within evince. I get the
error: Failed to execute child process vlc (Permission denied). The
same with totem.

I have been looking at all the apparmor prevents bugs that have been
reported of late. DVI printing, chromium, etc... the package
maintainers' strategy has been to add an exceptions to the apparmor

[Bug 217339] [NEW] Regression: searching body of large mailboxes excruciatingly slow since 2.22.1

2008-04-14 Thread Pausanias
Public bug reported:

Since the update to 2.22.1, searching the body of all mailboxes for a
string of text has been abysmally slow on my evolution mail. I have ~ 1
GB of mail scatter over a few folders, with many PDF attachments.

Prior to the upgrade, searching for text used to be instantaneous.

After the upgrade, evolution takes up ~10 seconds while displaying
Generating message list... on the status bar. Incidentally, following
the display of matching search results, trackerd proceeds to eat up CPU
for another 10 seconds or so.

Searches by subject or sender are still instantaneous.

Hypothesis: could this be due to evolution trying to search within
attachments?

[Bug 113086] Re: Enabling Desktop Effects, some part of firefox, thunderbird and evolution windows are black for few seconds when I deminimize them.

2008-04-10 Thread Pausanias
Well, I'm fairly sure that this is not purely a GTK issue. I've tested
many other GTK apps with complicated multi-panel windows (rhythmbox,
pidgin), and they don't have this issue. As far as I can tell, this is
only a problem with Evolution and Mozilla.

The David Reveman post linked to above suggests that it might be
incorrect implementation of a sync protocol in these applications. But
it also says that no GTK apps should have this problem, so I'm not sure
what the issue is.

I'll leave it to someone more experienced than myself to open a bug
upstream with the evolution developers.

[Bug 214723] [NEW] Evolution word wrap width is hardcoded

2008-04-09 Thread Pausanias
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Problem: Very simply, when composing a message in normal mode, it is
impossible to change the word wrap width. It is hardcoded to 72
characters. See

http://www.go-
evolution.org/FAQ#Why_cannot_I_reset_word_wrap_setting_for_outgoing_mails_at_72_characters.3F

Why it matters: Many older mail readers truncate message lines at
widths less than 72 characters, and this results in many misplaced
newlines within quoted text during an email discussion thread, making

Solution: The use should be free to select a different word wrap width.
This is a request to add an option to change it. The simplest way would
be to allow the window to be resized to the desired wrap width.

[Bug 113086] Re: Enabling Desktop Effects, some part of firefox, thunderbird and evolution windows are black for few seconds when I deminimize them.

2008-04-08 Thread Pausanias
I'd like to add my voice to those confirming this bug for evolution and
firefox. Latest hardy install, everything updated. I'm experiencing
exactly what's described in the original bug report.

Is there a workaround?

2008-04-08 Thread Pausanias
I'd like to add that I'm experiencing this with an NVIDIA card (Quadro
FX Go1400) and with *metacity composite*, not compiz. So the bug seems
to span both ATI and NVIDIA cards as well as metacity and compiz. This
would appear to support the idea that it's a bug in the applications
themselves.

get the buggy behavior.

[Bug 210080] [NEW] Regression: evince requires two keystrokes to advance beamer slides in presentation mode

2008-03-31 Thread Pausanias
Public bug reported:

In Gutsy, files produced with the latex-beamer package used to work fine
in presentation mode. In a fully updated hardy installation, the files
require two keystrokes to advance each slide, not the one keystroke
that's normal.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Download attached test.pdf
2) Open this using the evince from Gutsy. Only one page down/down arrow/space
is required to advance to the next slide, regardless of presentation mode.
3) Open the same file using the evince from Hardy. In normal mode, the behavior
is as above.
4) However, in presentation mode, two keypresses are required to advance each
slide in hardy's evince.

I've checked with other non-beamer pdf files and the hardy evince displays them
correctly.

[Bug 210081] [NEW] REgression: evince will not launch external applications

2008-03-31 Thread Pausanias
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

In gutsy, evince used to be able to launch external helper applications.
In a fully updated hardy, it doesn't seem to do this, at least with the
attached example.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Download test.tar.gz attachment, unpack in a directory, cd to it.
2) Load test.pdf in gutsy's evince. A movie player will launch if you
click on the image on the last page, assuming your system can
 play MOV files.
3) Load test.pdf in hardy's evince. Even though the tooltip says that
evince intends to launch the movie player, it doesn't. However,
the movie can be played just fine using a properly configure totem.

[Bug 208404] [NEW] Keyboard repeat rate not synchronized with gconf value at login

2008-03-28 Thread Pausanias
Public bug reported:

Fully updated Hardy. When I set the keyboard repeat rate using either
gnome-keyboard-properties or gconf-editor, the new repeat rate is
recognized by the system. Upon reboot or logout/login, the actual
keyboard rate reverts to the default keyboard repeat rate, despite the
fact that gconf-editor shows the correct value. Editing the value in
gconf-editor and pressing return with no change makes the new keyboard
repeat rate active. The same is true in gnome-keyboard-properties.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Start with default keyboard repeat rate.
2) Change the repeat rate to something high, like 200, in gconf-editor.
The gconf key is /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/rate
3) In all apps, keyboard repeats incredibly fast when a key is held down
4) Logout and log back in.
5) Keyboard rate has noticeably reverted to original slower rate in all apps.
6) Open gconf-editor. The keyboard rate is still 200.
7) Edit the rate, by double-clicking, but leave it at 200. Hit return.
8) Keyboard is back to the fast repeat rate in all apps.

[Bug 199942] Re: Error messages when starting gdmsetup

2008-03-22 Thread Pausanias
I too have problems running gdmsetup. When I run it, there is constant
disk activity, but no gdmsetup shows up. Killing gdmsetup does not seem
to stop the disk activity. Only rebooting does.

The hard disk activity sounds so intense that I didn't dare wait 5
minutes or whatever for gdmsetup to show up.

In my case, running gdmsetup from the terminal does not produce *any*
error messages.

[Bug 153706] Any user can reboot or shutdown computer when screen is locked

2007-10-17 Thread Pausanias
Public bug reported:

If the screen is locked, and user switching is enabled, any malicious
person can reboot or shutdown the computer by selecting switch users
from the screensaver dialog, and then rebooting the computer. This can
use potential loss of data for the user who locked the screen.

Steps to reproduce:

1) Enable user switching (key /apps/gnome-screensaver/user_switch_enabled
2) Lock the screen (and walk away)
3) (Malicious user) press any key and select Switch User
4) Select Restart from the menu at the bottom
5) Lose all unsaved work

Expected behavior:

1) gdm should ask for an administrator password or some such thing
before rebooting/shutting down active logged in accounts.

[Bug 153706] Re: Any user can reboot or shutdown computer when screen is locked

2007-10-17 Thread Pausanias
For most computers, this is not such a big issue because a malicious
user can just turn off the machine anyway. However, this IS an issue for
e.g. kiosks where the user has no access to the physical machine. True,
user switching ought to be disabled by kiosk machines, but it is turned
out by default in Ubuntu and so Ubuntu kiosks without this feature will
be vulnerable to disruption.

[Bug 84876] Re: Gnome settings manager error to start desktop

2007-04-26 Thread Pausanias
I seem to be having a similar problem on an updated install of Feisty,
except that my GNOME is never slow to load---it loads with about the
same speed as in Edgy.

Here is what happens. If I login normally after booting, all is fine.
But say I boot up the computer and leave gdm running for a while. If I
do so, there is like a 20% chance that I when I do login, I will get
this error (there was an error starting the gnome settings daemon).
GNOME comes up at a lower screen resolution, and the Ubuntu theme is
gone (it uses the default GNOME theme).

Killing X with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace and re-loggin in fixes the problem.

I have also had this same error message come up when I've booted the
live CD. But only the first time! All the other times the live CD has
booted fine.

It seems strange that this problem should be non-reproducible with a
live CD.

[Bug 42712] Re: gdmsetup segfaults

2006-05-16 Thread Pausanias
I can confirm that the segfault was due to the absence of /etc/gdm/gdm
.conf-custom after playing around with xgl/compiz. The instructions on
the forums say that one should delete this file to disable xgl/compiz.
It appears as mentioned above that removing this file causes gdmsetup to
segfault. The solution is to restore the default /etc/gdm/gdm.conf-
custom and reboot (or restart gdm).

[Bug 29960] Incorrect behavior when logging out of GNOME via keyboard shortcut

2006-01-28 Thread Pausanias
Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/29960

Affects: gnome-desktop (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
When logging out of GNOME using the Log out keyboard short cut, I find
that the save session warning dialog comes up regardless of the save
current session setting.

To reproduce:
1) Under System-Preferences-Keyboard Shortcuts, Assign a key to the Log
out keyboard shortcut.
2) Be sure that the Automatically save changes to session box is unchecked
under System-Preferences-Sessions
3) Open some unsupported applications, such as firefox and emacs.
4) Log out using the keyboard shortcut. You will be warned that firefox and
emacs do not support session saving. This is the bug---you should not be asked
anything about session saving at all because you have save changes to session
turned off.

Logging out using the GNOME menu from the panel does not produce the
spurious warning---only logging out via the keyboard shortcut causes the
behavior.
