[Bug 1292041] Re: Lockscreen doesn't turn off the screen
Is there a workaround? Better question: is there any hope of GNOME developers *not* breaking critical functionality from release to release? After 12 years with Ubuntu, I can come up with a huge list of extremely frustrating and sometimes downright dangerous regressions, almost all of them in GNOME, and almost all of them affecting a feature that was working perfectly well in a previous release. /rant -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-screensaver in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1292041 Title: Lockscreen doesn't turn off the screen To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/oem-priority/+bug/1292041/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 558674] Re: Open file dialog malfunctions in lucid
Walter, I just read that document. I need to be a computer scientist just to decipher that thing. I am not a community member, coder, or someone with the time to follow all that procedure. Look, I'm just a poor LTS user. I bought into the whole promise of Ubuntu that while LTS is supposed to lack new features, it would fix critical bugs. This is a critical bug with LTS. It's been fixed upstream. It causes the file open dialog to behave in an erratic and potentially harmful way. And no one is willing to bring it back to LTS? If there isn't a regular Ubuntu dev, whether paid or volunteer, who recognizes how important this bug is, then I give up on Ubuntu. Even worse, if you do recognize how important this bug is to fix, but lack the willingness to put your expertise into use for 2 minutes to follow that procedure of which you just spoke, then I give up on Ubuntu even worse. This isn't a case of an unknown random bug which can't be reproduced, it is the case of a bug which has been recognized by upstream and for which there is a specific patch. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gtk+2.0 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/558674 Title: Open file dialog malfunctions in lucid To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gtk/+bug/558674/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 558674] Re: Open file dialog malfunctions in lucid
You have got to be kidding me. What is the point of LTS then? I cannot simply update my machine. I am running LTS in a production environment. I am supposed to be relying on the vaunted rock-solid stability of LTS. Lucid has several years to go in its life span. It speaks volumes about Ubuntu's commitment to LTS that you would even post that. If Canonical does not have the resources to support LTS properly---especially for a bug where something as basic as the file open dialog is malfunctioning in an insidious and potentially harmful way---then do not support it at all. Do not make the claim of LTS.

Shame on you, Ubuntu, for leaving this bug unfixed nine months after it was (supposedly) fixed upstream. Is this supposed to be a rock-solid LTS operating system, where something as critical as the file open dialog doesn't even work properly? Leaving the importance low when there is the possibility of uploading the wrong file to a work-critical website? Are you kidding me? Shame on you. Shame on you. The thing that really puzzles me is that there must be so many Canonical workers/Ubuntu volunteers packaging upstream fixes... I mean I must have installed at least 1000 updates to packages from upstream since October 10th. But a bug fixed upstream that affects one of the most basic, fundamental UI functions... low priority. Well, I'm fairly sure that this is not purely a GTK issue. I've tested many other GTK apps with complicated multi-panel windows (rhythmbox, pidgin), and they don't have this issue. [Bug 191901] Re: Evolution always start in offline mode
I am experiencing the same thing on a fully upgraded hardy beta. Specifically, this happens following resume from suspend. NM connects to the network following resume, and in gutsy and previous versions, evolution would switch to online mode and then check email. In hardy beta, evolution never returns to work online mode. ** Changed in: evolution (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid = Confirmed -- Evolution always start in offline mode https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/191901 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 208404] [NEW] Keyboard repeat rate not synchronized with gconf value at login
Public bug reported: Fully updated Hardy. When I set the keyboard repeat rate using either gnome-keyboard-properties or gconf-editor, the new repeat rate is recognized by the system. Upon reboot or logout/login, the actual keyboard rate reverts to the default keyboard repeat rate, despite the fact that gconf-editor shows the correct value. Editing the value in gconf-editor and pressing return with no change makes the new keyboard repeat rate active. The same is true in gnome-keyboard-properties. Steps to reproduce: 1) Start with default keyboard repeat rate. 2) Change the repeat rate to something high, like 200, in gconf-editor. The gconf key is /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/rate 3) In all apps, keyboard repeats incredibly fast when a key is held down 4) Logout and log back in. 5) Keyboard rate has noticeably reverted to original slower rate in all apps. 6) Open gconf-editor. The keyboard rate is still 200. 7) Edit the rate, by double-clicking, but leave it at 200. Hit return. 8) Keyboard is back to the fast repeat rate in all apps. ** Affects: gconf (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Keyboard repeat rate not synchronized with gconf value at login https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/208404 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gconf in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 199942] Re: Error messages when starting gdmsetup
I too have problems running gdmsetup. When I run it, there is constant disk activity, but no gdmsetup shows up. Killing gdmsetup does not seem to stop the disk activity. Only rebooting does. The hard disk activity sounds so intense that I didn't dare wait 5 minutes or whatever for gdmsetup to show up. [Bug 153706] Any user can reboot or shutdown computer when screen is locked
Public bug reported: If the screen is locked, and user switching is enabled, any malicious person can reboot or shutdown the computer by selecting switch users from the screensaver dialog, and then rebooting the computer. This can use potential loss of data for the user who locked the screen. Steps to reproduce: 1) Enable user switching (key /apps/gnome-screensaver/user_switch_enabled 2) Lock the screen (and walk away) 3) (Malicious user) press any key and select Switch User 4) Select Restart from the menu at the bottom 5) Lose all unsaved work Expected behavior: 1) gdm should ask for an administrator password or some such thing before rebooting/shutting down active logged in accounts. ** Affects: gdm (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Visibility changed to: Public -- Any user can reboot or shutdown computer when screen is locked https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/153706 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for gdm in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 153706] Re: Any user can reboot or shutdown computer when screen is locked
For most computers, this is not such a big issue because a malicious user can just turn off the machine anyway. However, this IS an issue for e.g. kiosks where the user has no access to the physical machine. True, user switching ought to be disabled by kiosk machines, but it is turned out by default in Ubuntu and so Ubuntu kiosks without this feature will be vulnerable to disruption. -- Any user can reboot or shutdown computer when screen is locked https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/153706 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug contact for gdm in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 84876] Re: Gnome settings manager error to start desktop
I seem to be having a similar problem on an updated install of Feisty, except that my GNOME is never slow to load---it loads with about the same speed as in Edgy. Here is what happens. If I login normally after booting, all is fine. But say I boot up the computer and leave gdm running for a while. If I do so, there is like a 20% chance that I when I do login, I will get this error (there was an error starting the gnome settings daemon). GNOME comes up at a lower screen resolution, and the Ubuntu theme is gone (it uses the default GNOME theme). Killing X with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace and re-loggin in fixes the problem. I have also had this same error message come up when I've booted the live CD. But only the first time! All the other times the live CD has booted fine. It seems strange that this problem should be non-reproducible with a live CD. -- Gnome settings manager error to start desktop https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/84876 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 42712] Re: gdmsetup segfaults
I can confirm that the segfault was due to the absence of /etc/gdm/gdm .conf-custom after playing around with xgl/compiz. The instructions on the forums say that one should delete this file to disable xgl/compiz. It appears as mentioned above that removing this file causes gdmsetup to segfault. The solution is to restore the default /etc/gdm/gdm.conf- custom and reboot (or restart gdm). -- gdmsetup segfaults https://launchpad.net/bugs/42712 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

I can confirm that gdm-setup is not working, though not exactly in the same manner as described here. Basically, when I run gdmsetup from the gnome menu, the window comes up for half a second and then vanishes. When I run sudo /usr/sbin/gdmsetup from an xterm, I get a segfault. [Bug 29960] Incorrect behavior when logging out of GNOME via keyboard shortcut
Public bug reported: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/29960 Affects: gnome-desktop (Ubuntu) Severity: Normal Priority: (none set) Status: Unconfirmed Description: When logging out of GNOME using the Log out keyboard short cut, I find that the save session warning dialog comes up regardless of the save current session setting. To reproduce: 1) Under System-Preferences-Keyboard Shortcuts, Assign a key to the Log out keyboard shortcut. 2) Be sure that the Automatically save changes to session box is unchecked under System-Preferences-Sessions 3) Open some unsupported applications, such as firefox and emacs. 4) Log out using the keyboard shortcut. You will be warned that firefox and emacs do not support session saving. This is the bug---you should not be asked anything about session saving at all because you have save changes to session turned off. Logging out using the GNOME menu from the panel does not produce the spurious warning---only logging out via the keyboard shortcut causes the behavior. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
