[Bug 303094] Re: Ctrl-A very slow in Intrepid compared to Hardy
Apologies for ignoring this for two months. The problem is still there a little but I have changed the way Maildrop deals with spam so I no longer get hundreds of new emails in a folder. I am therefore no longer getting the pain I had when I made the bug report. Given my failure to respond on inability to test things properly it seems fair to let this one lie -- though I think there is still a problem since Ctrl-A does have a noticeable delay. It is nothing I can quantify though now. -- Ctrl-A very slow in Intrepid compared to Hardy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/303094 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 328575] Re: Cannot start gnome-terminal because of gconf error
Having just upgraded to Jaunty from Intrepid, I have arrived at this "cannot do 'gksu gnome-terminal'" bug. How did this happen? What change was made Intrepid -> Jaunty that broke this oft used (even if some people consider it the wrong thing to do) feature? I really am not looking for workarounds, I am looking for this not to have been broken in the first place. This problem has clearly been known about since the beginning of this year and still Jaunty was released with the bug for us unsuspecting people to get hit by. This really does need to be considered as a security bug and fixed asap: the whole point of using this idiom is that it requires the password and it gives a new type of terminal so that it can be coloured differently from other terminals to show it is a dangerous terminal. -- Cannot start gnome-terminal because of gconf error https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/328575 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Sebastien, your comment seems to imply that Launchpad bug reports are a waste of time. Is this really what you meant? I had been under the impression that Launchpad was intended to be a gateway/portal for bug reporting. I just upgraded Hardy -> Intrepid and came across this problem that every letter is deemed to be a misspelled word. It is very, very annoying. [Bug 303094] Re: Ctrl-A very slow in Intrepid compared to Hardy
Thanks for the quick response, it's much appreciated. I am using IMAP to a Courier SSL server on Ubuntu (Intrepid). The delay in the Ctrl-A action seems independent of client device filestore, I get it using my laptop with the .evolution directory on a local disc or with my workstation with the .evolution directory on an NFS mounted filestore over a 100Gb Ethernet link. I am not sure what other detail will be useful / helpful, let me know what else would help and I will provide if I can. If there is a PPA I can add to my sources.list files to get release candidates I am happy to try that, but I am afraid I am not going to be able to get any more cutting edge than that. -- Ctrl-A very slow in Intrepid compared to Hardy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/303094 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Public bug reported: The Ctrl-A action to select all the emails in a folder was relatively slow in Hardy (Evolution 2.22.1) but has become 5 or 6 time slower -- and so irritatingly much slower -- in Intrepid (Evolution 2.24.1). ** Affects: evolution (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Ctrl-A very slow in Intrepid compared to Hardy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/303094 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to evolution in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 303094] Re: Ctrl-A very slow in Intrepid compared to Hardy
I decided to wait. Evolution 2.24.2 came out for me today and I upgraded everywhere. Anecdotally I think I can say that the delay between typing Ctrl-A and the messages in the folder being highlighted is less than it was, but there is still a noticeable delay. The delay though is fairly clearly dependent on the number of messages in the folder. It remains the case that if you type Ctrl-A, Ctrl-D, Ctrl-E a lot as I do, it is incredibly easy to hit the Ctrl-D before the Ctrl-A has caused all the items in the folder to be highlighted, which then leads to the Ctrl-D and Ctrl-E being lost. It seems that there is (actually always has been) a loss of typed input when an action is being undertaken. -- Ctrl-A very slow in Intrepid compared to Hardy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/303094 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Actually it isn't usually that bad, in fact there is a wide variation in how long using Ctrl-A takes to select between 2 and 100 messages in a folder. I haven't done detailed timings but subjectively the fastest is about 0.5s and the slowest is about 2s. Thanks for the quick response, it's much appreciated. I am using IMAP to a Courier SSL server on Ubuntu (Intrepid). [Bug 131286] Re: Cannot play BBC Live TMS Scorecard
Unfortunately, a specific URL only exists whilst the game being reported is actually being played. So testing can only happen when a game is being reported. (The BBC pipe their radio commentary and an information display feed to a game specific URL.) Fortunately, the BBC are always reporting on some game, as long as one is being played somewhere, so it is a question of going to the main cricket page and then finding the currently in use URL. I haven't tried them with the GStreamer version to see if they exhibit the same problems, they appear to work fine under the Xine version, but the BBC do have various video/audio articles on the sport main page (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport). Again specific URLs change on a daily basis but there is always something there. I wonder if the following behaviour is part of the same or is a different bug: I put an audio CD in the drive, the desktop icon appears and SoundJuicer starts, reads the CD and allows me to play or rip. If I then terminate SoundJuicer and either double click the desktop icon or use shift+right click to get the menu and select Browse, SoundJuicer itself starts but it goes no further. In particular, it does not display the list of tracks. It is as though either something is locking the CD device on first action on insertion that is not released when the first SoundJuicer instance is terminated or subsequent instances of SoundJuicer are not being correctly connected to the CD device. -- Russel. ======== Dr Russel Winder+44 20 7585 2200 41 Buckmaster Road +44 7770 465 077 London SW11 1EN, UK [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- Cannot get browser on extended CD ROM https://launchpad.net/bugs/46168 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Having just upgraded to Jaunty from Intrepid, I have arrived at this "cannot do 'gksu gnome-terminal'" bug. How did this happen? What change was made Intrepid -> Jaunty that broke this oft used (even if some people consider it the wrong thing to do) feature? This problem has clearly been known about since the beginning of this year and still Jaunty was released with the bug for us unsuspecting people to get hit by. Thanks for the quick response, it's much appreciated. I am using IMAP to a Courier SSL server on Ubuntu (Intrepid).
[Bug 303094] [NEW] Ctrl-A very slow in Intrepid compared to Hardy

[Bug 303094] Re: Ctrl-A very slow in Intrepid compared to Hardy
Actually it isn't usually that bad, in fact there is a wide variation in how long using Ctrl-A takes to select between 2 and 100 messages in a folder. I haven't done detailed timings but subjectively the fastest is about 0.5s and the slowest is about 2s.
The BBC help page is currently: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/video_and_audio/help_guide/4304501.stm, but I guess this might change as well :-) -- Cannot play BBC Live TMS Scorecard https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/131286 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Done, result below. Just to add top the data, I see I forgot to say what was happening on the UI. Rhythmbox starts entirely as expected and loads all the artists/music files. The status bar right "doing something" indicator zaps left and right. Then it reaches the "done everything state". A very short time later it goes into "Loading..." state with the left- right movement indicator going, then back to "done everything". This moving between ready and loading continues until it crashes with the segfault. 501 balin:~ |> ls /usr/share/rhythmbox/art ./ about-logo.png rhythmbox-podcast.png rhythmbox-tray-icon.png ../ rhythmbox-no-star.png rhythmbox-set-star.png rhythmbox-unset-star.png 502 balin:~ |> strace -e open rhythmbox 2>&1 | grep png open("/usr/lib/libpng12.so.0", O_RDONLY) = 3 open("/usr/share/rhythmbox/art/rhythmbox-tray-icon.png", O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = 17 open("/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.4.0/loaders/libpixbufloader-png.so", O_RDONLY) = 18 open("/usr/share/rhythmbox/art/rhythmbox-set-star.png", O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = 17 open("/usr/share/rhythmbox/art/rhythmbox-unset-star.png", O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = 17 open("/usr/share/rhythmbox/art/rhythmbox-podcast.png", O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = 17 open("/usr/share/rhythmbox/art/rhythmbox-no-star.png", O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = 17 open("/usr/share/pixmaps/rhythmbox.png", O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = 17 open("/usr/share/pixmaps/lpi-help.png", O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = 23 open("/usr/share/pixmaps/lpi-translate.png", O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = 23 503 balin:~ -- rhythmbox crashes when loading my Music Library https://launchpad.net/bugs/54841 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 54841] Re: rhythmbox crashes when loading my Music Library
Done, result below. Just to add top the data, I see I forgot to say what was happening on the UI. Rhythmbox starts entirely as expected and loads all the artists/music files. The status bar right "doing something" indicator zaps left and right. Then it reaches the "done everything state". A very short time later it goes into "Loading..." state with the left- right movement indicator going, then back to "done everything". This moving between ready and loading continues until it crashes with the segfault. 501 balin:~ |> ls /usr/share/rhythmbox/art ./ about-logo.png rhythmbox-podcast.png rhythmbox-tray-icon.png ../ rhythmbox-no-star.png rhythmbox-set-star.png rhythmbox-unset-star.png 502 balin:~ |> strace -e open rhythmbox 2>&1 | grep png open("/usr/lib/libpng12.so.0", O_RDONLY) = 3 open("/usr/share/rhythmbox/art/rhythmbox-tray-icon.png", O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = 17 open("/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.4.0/loaders/libpixbufloader-png.so", O_RDONLY) = 18 open("/usr/share/rhythmbox/art/rhythmbox-set-star.png", O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = 17 open("/usr/share/rhythmbox/art/rhythmbox-unset-star.png", O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = 17 open("/usr/share/rhythmbox/art/rhythmbox-podcast.png", O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = 17 open("/usr/share/rhythmbox/art/rhythmbox-no-star.png", O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = 17 open("/usr/share/pixmaps/rhythmbox.png", O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = 17 open("/usr/share/pixmaps/lpi-help.png", O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = 23 open("/usr/share/pixmaps/lpi-translate.png", O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = 23 503 balin:~ -- rhythmbox crashes when loading my Music Library https://launchpad.net/bugs/54841 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 156232] Re: -c option in manual but not recognized since updated Feisty -> Gutsy
Just to confirm that Hardy has a gimp with the -c option. (Everyone already knows this but it seems like a good way of saying we can close this bug.) [Bug 181893] Re: Adding a certificate exception for non-trusted HTTPS sites is difficult
I have just had an issue with a broken SSL certificate that I needed to accept as a one-off and found Epiphany to be significantly inferior to Galeon in the way the browser interacts with the user. Can I propose that following the Galeon way of doing things would improve Epiphany -- i.e. put up a small dialog asking the user for permission to connect anyway even though the certificate is formally not acceptable, or not. I am using Hardy and hence Epiphany version 2.22.2-0ubuntu0.8.04.2 -- Adding a certificate exception for non-trusted HTTPS sites is difficult https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/181893 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 131286] Cannot play BBC Live TMS Scorecard
Public bug reported: The BBC provide a live cricket commentary and scoreboard.
[Bug 288930] Re: Intrepid - Evolution does not spell check or is not enabled by default
I just upgraded Hardy -> Intrepid and came across this problem that every letter is deemed to be a misspelled word. It is very, very annoying. Very few Ubuntu users will see this as a quirk, they will see it as a disaster. Can I suggest this should be seen as a critical blocking bug to be fixed asap. (Along with the disaster that is the neverending update of the cache files -- in the end I had to stop Evolution and delete the entire IMAP cache and start again.. This Evolution upgrade is a bit of a disaster.) -- Intrepid - Evolution does not spell check or is not enabled by default https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/288930 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
