[Bug 162000] Re: Cannot use Ctrl-Tab as keyboard shortcut in gnome-terminal

2016-04-27 Thread Simon Law
As a hack, you can still specify "Tab" and
"Tab" as keybindings, directly using dconf-editor or
gsettings.

For instance, gnome-terminal:

$ gsettings set \
  org.gnome.Terminal.Legacy.Keybindings:/org/gnome/terminal/legacy/keybindings/
\
  next-tab 'Tab'
$ gsettings set \
  org.gnome.Terminal.Legacy.Keybindings:/org/gnome/terminal/legacy/keybindings/
\
  prev-tab 'Tab'

[Bug 112350] Re: Evince gets stuck when trying to open PDF file

2007-08-10 Thread Simon Law
This bug occurs when the X server gets confused about display
dimensions.

Some video drivers, like fglrx, will mess up. xdpyinfo gives the
following output on my system.

screen #0:
  dimensions:1400x1050 pixels (0x0 millimeters)
  resolution:-2147483648x-2147483648 dots per inch

Evince asks GdkPixBuf to create a negative sized pixbuf, which is
impossible.

The workaround is to manually specify the DisplaySize in
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.

[Bug 81608] Please use DejaVu Sans Condensed as the default font

2007-01-26 Thread Simon Law
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: human-gtk-theme

This is a wishlist bug that I discussed with Ken Wiimer.

We now ship DejaVu Sans in Feisty, which contains Condensed and
Condensed Bold flavours. These are great screen fonts that are quite
legible and can be used for user-interface elements like window titles,
menus, and tooltips. They're clean, since they are based on Bitstream
Vera Sans, but also thin so that more information fits in the available
space.

I recommend against using them as the document fonts, since their
hinting is not up to par with Bitstream Vera Sans, so they look a bit
blurry. But for everything else, they're excellent.

In summary, please use DejaVu Sans Condensed as the default user-
interface font for Ubuntu and Kubuntu.

[Bug 81608] Re: Please use DejaVu Sans Condensed as the default font

2007-01-26 Thread Simon Law
We may want to test DejaVu Sans Condensed with people with that don't
use the Latin-Greek-Cyrillic character sets. DejaVu Sans is sometimes
poor for those characters. We may need a special DejaVu LGC Sans
Condensed, so that fontconfig falls back on another font.

[Bug 81608] Re: Please use DejaVu Sans Condensed as the default font

2007-01-26 Thread Simon Law
This is the proposed type scheme for Feisty. We'll use Bitstream Vera
Sans for document text and DejaVu Sans Condensed for the desktop theme.

There is some concern that DejaVu is not good for character sets outside
the Latin-Greek-Cyrillic languages, so if that's the case, we can cut
out non-LGC characters and rely on fontconfig to pick the right glyph to
display. Fedora ships with DejaVu LGC, which seems to be the correct
decision.

[Bug 2066] Re: Unable to load any usable fontset

2007-01-16 Thread Simon Law
Nope, I lied. Here are reproduction steps for Ubuntu Edgy:

1. Install tetex-bin.
2. Log out.
3. At the login screen, go to Options Select Session... Then, select the
Failsafe Terminal session and login.
4. Run `xdvi` and click Cancel
5. Note down xdvi's output
6. Run `dbus-launch` and export the environment variables it spews out.
7. Run `gnome-settings-daemon `
8. Run `xdvi` and click Cancel
9. Note down xdvi's output.

Expected result:
xdvi runs quietly both times.

Actual result:
The second time xdvi is run, in step 9, it reports the following error:

Warning: Missing charsets in String to FontSet conversion
Warning: Unable to load any usable fontset

Workaround:
After gnome-settings-daemon starts up, run `xset fp rehash` to
recompute the font paths.

[Bug 67917] Re: Bug #61835 it's happening again, no grid-lines

2006-11-29 Thread Simon Law
Using the attached test case (fixed up so it compiles without warnings),
I was able to reproduce the bug inside the
gtk+2.0-2.10.6/upstream/tarballs/gtk+-2.10.6/tests source tree.

The package in edgy-proposed fixes this bug without causing regressions.

Approved to go into edgy-updates today.

[Bug 65797] Re: (Edgy) 'Fit window to movie' doesn't work at all

2006-11-29 Thread Simon Law
I just tested totem-xine as well, which is in Edgy Universe.

It breaks not as badly, in that the Glade file merely enforces a minimum
size of 420x315. The patched version in edgy-proposed makes totem-xine
perform properly.

This is the first Works for me, following the
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU/Processes/SRU procedure.

[Bug 67860] Re: [Edgy] Some strings can't be translated

2006-11-29 Thread Simon Law
Tested that it was indeed broken in Edgy by hacking the /usr/share
/locale-langpack/es/LC_MESSAGES/libgnomeprintui-2.2.mo file with
translations for _even pages and _odd pages.

The package in edgy-proposed fixes this bug, without introducing
regressions.

I was unable to test whether Rosetta will pick up these things from
edgy-proposed. Would this be a blocker for a stable release update? Is
there any point in this patch if new translations cannot take advantage
of this?

[Bug 70090] Re: gnome-panel-screenshot print button

2006-11-03 Thread Simon Law
Thanks for your report. Your idea might get more attention and have
the possibility of being implemented if you would submit a
specification for this.

You should first check whether it already exists at the Ubuntu specs
page (https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+specs) in Launchpad. If
that is the case, feel free to contact the drafter of that spec about
your comments/suggestions. Otherwise you can start writing a spec
following the steps described in

[Bug 66262] Re: Human login screen doesn't specify a font size for the input field

2006-10-16 Thread Simon Law
Sorry, didn't see that fix for bug 36251.

I want to assert that the resolution for that bug is flawed. The
canonical font for Human seems to be Bitstream Vera Sans and not
Sans.

Also, the input box is too small for Bitstream Vera Sans 12. If we
want to use a 12-point font face, then you'll have to make the input box
larger. Otherwise, drop it to a 10-point face.

Thanks!

** Summary changed:

- Human login screen doesn't specify a font size for the input field
+ Human login screen specifies the wrong font face for the input field

** Description changed:

- The Human login screen just relies on the default font size for the
- input field. Since the dimensions of that field are constrained, it may
- appear to be too small to contain the text.

[Bug 62347] Re: limitations of abiword's zoom can make it impossible to zoom to near actual size

2006-09-25 Thread Simon Law
Hi Robert,

Do you mean the Abiword at actual size doesn't show the same size as
if you put a page up to your monitor?

Due to the various difficulties with measuring actual size of pixels, I
doubt you'll be able to convince the Abiword developers to make this
work well. However, http://bugzilla.abisource.com/show_bug.cgi?id=3547
seems to address your problem.

[Bug 62401] Re: [Edgy] Rhythmbox en-gb translation has many issues

2006-09-25 Thread Simon Law
The title of the application was chosen so that people don't have to
guess which menu item plays their music, so I doubt this would change.

But correcting the manual would be wonderful!

This is something that the original authors would probably appreciate.
Please feel free to contact them at
http://www.gnome.org/projects/rhythmbox/feedback.html where they'll
direct you how to best submit your revised version.

Thanks!

[Bug 61929] Re: gnome-screensaver fading to black screen rather than saver

2006-09-22 Thread Simon Law
Hello,

Which version of Ubuntu are you running?

As well, what happens when you run a screensaver from the command prompt
with your nVidia drivers? Does /usr/lib/xscreensaver/gears display
anything but a blank screen?

Please attach the contents of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and
/var/log/Xorg.0.log file to this bug report.

[Bug 57872] Re: regression: pressing power button no longer brings up logout dialog

2006-08-31 Thread Simon Law
Hi there,

Could you please run the following commands to help us figure out why
your power button is ignored?

  $ gnome-session-remove gnome-power-manager
  $ gnome-power-manager --no-daemon --verbose 21 | tee /tmp/g-p-m.log

Then, hit the power button a few times.

Next, please run:
  $ gconftool -R /apps/gnome-power-manager 21 | tee /tmp/gconf.log

You should attach these /tmp/g-p-m.log and /tmp/gconf.log to this bug
report. Thanks!

[Bug 57405] Re: Edgy won't mount blank CDs or DVDs

2006-08-25 Thread Simon Law
Ah, OK.

Are you able to read pressed CDs and DVDs using your CD burner?

When you run /usr/lib/nautilus-cd-burner/list_cddrives, what output do
you get?

Please run:
  $ lshal 21 | tee /tmp/lshal.log
and attach /tmp/lshal.log to this bug report.

Finally, please run:
  $ gnome-session-remove gnome-volume-manager
  $ gnome-volume-manager -n 21 | tee /tmp/g-v-m.log
Then, insert a blank CD to see what g-v-m thinks about it. You can
hit Control-C to stop g-v-m and attack /tmp/g-v-m.log to this bug
as well.

Thanks.
