[Bug 1935777] [NEW] Power Saving settings have incomprehensible meanings/labels for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

2021-07-11 Thread Stuart Langridge
Public bug reported:

In the Power Saving section of the Power tab of the Settings app, there
are two switches, one labelled "Wi-Fi" with subheading "Wi-Fi can be
turned off to save power" and the other labelled "Bluetooth" with
subheading "Bluetooth can be turned off to save power". On my machine,
the "Wi-Fi" switch is off and the "Bluetooth" switch is on. (Screenshot
attached.)

I do not know what these switches mean, and I do not know what will
change if I change their settings.

Does this mean

* yes Ubuntu is permitted to switch off your wifi to save power but it's not
permitted to switch off your Bluetooth, or
* it is permitted to switch off your Bluetooth but not permitted to switch off
your wifi, or
* your bluetooth is already switched off to save power but wifi is always on,
or
* wifi is already switched off to save power but bluetooth is always on, or
* something else entirely?

I am utterly confused.

[Bug 1873403] Re: [nvidia] Screen turns off when trying to set some fractional scaling values

2020-07-23 Thread Stuart Still
I've tried this from pop!_os 20.04, nVidia 2060 super GTX, 4k monitor.

Starting off in 100% scaling, I select 125% scaling. Before enabling
proposed, this resulted in the screen switching off.

Since enabling proposed and installing the updated packages, this now
doesn't switch the screen off, but the behaviour is still not correct. I
believe I'm now experiencing
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mutter/+bug/1875285 and
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mutter/+bug/1825593 (the
latter of which is marked as fixed).

[Bug 1879318] Re: Removing gnome software snap plugin breaks gnome software storefront on Xubuntu 20.04

2020-05-20 Thread Stuart
Of course it does, that's why I removed it. All recommended applications
shown on the gnome storefront are snaps, all of them, see for yourself.
Also when you search it always shows snaps first instead of repo apps.
So the workaround is not a solution.

This is not the same bug. Please compare screenshots, bug report 1873060
has a big empty space between apps and categories. I don't even have
apps showing in the front page at all.

[Bug 1760849] Re: Unable to login unless primary display available, not mirrored

2018-04-03 Thread Stuart Bishop
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1723025 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1723025

I don't think this is a dupe of Bug #1723025, which is discussing
behavior when a screen is disabled such as a laptop being closed while
an external monitor is connected. In my case, the laptop screen is not
disabled (the laptop is not designed to operate with the lid closed).
The laptop screen simply cannot be seen when using the external monitor
and keyboard due to its physical positioning.

Ideally, for this bug to be fixed the screens would be mirrored and the
login screen displayed on all screens. Fallback would be to implement
previous release behavior, where the login controls followed the mouse
pointer and would appear on whatever screen the mouse pointer is moved
to.

[Bug 1760849] [NEW] Unable to login unless primary display avaiable, not mirrored

2018-04-03 Thread Stuart Bishop
Public bug reported:

The Ubuntu login screen is tiled on all displays, not mirrored, making
it nearly impossible to login when using an external monitor if the
laptop screen is not visible.

There appears to be no available control to alter the display settings
of the login screen. Prior to bionic, the controls followed the mouse
onto different displays so you could login by giving the mouse a swipe
to the right to get the controls to appear.

2018-03-26 Thread Stuart

@Daniel - thanks, again. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling both
gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock and gnome-shell-extension-dashtodock.
Neither fixed it.

But rather, now, when I lock the screen, the screen turns black and
turns off and re-awakens on keyboard/mouse movement.

[Bug 1758917] [NEW] Can see and interact with dock on lock screen

2018-03-26 Thread Stuart
Public bug reported:

When I lock my screen, or the session becomes locked due to inactivity,
I can see and interact with the dock on the lock screen.

I am able to launch applications, though I cannot see the applications
or interact with them until I log in. But upon logging in, those
applications are open.

I am using the dash-to-dock extension.

Thanks

[Bug 1758706] [NEW] Session logs out after screen turns off

2018-03-25 Thread Stuart
Public bug reported:

This is the same bug as #1721428

:/var/crash$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 17.10
Release:17.10

I am using a NUC7i7BNH connected via HDMI. The screen turns off after 5
minutes of inactivity and automatic screen lock is also turned on to
lock the screen after screen turns off.

When I resume activity, I am presented with the logon screen, which
after entering my password, reloads another logon screen. When I then
enter my password the second time, I am logged in, but it is a new
session.

[Bug 1697920] [NEW] Gnome Software front end showed spinner on all actions; had to kill service process to fix

2017-06-14 Thread Stuart Langridge
Public bug reported:

When opening Gnome Software, the front screen worked fine for me
(showing the featured app, editor's picks and so on) but taking any
action (clicking a different tab, or clicking an application, or doing a
search) showed an empty window with a spinner. There was a long-running
"/usr/bin/gnome-software --gapplication-service" process running;
killing that process and then starting Gnome Software made everything
work again (and updated the featured app to be the current one).

[Bug 1660855] [NEW] Can't start gnome-software to show a particular snap package

2017-01-31 Thread Stuart Langridge
Public bug reported:

I'd like to be able to launch gnome-software showing the details page
for a particular snap. I can do this for packages from the Ubuntu
archive (gnome-software --details-pkg=inkscape works fine, for example),
and gnome-software _supports_ snaps: if I search for ohmygiraffe in
gnome-software it finds that snap package no problem. But "gnome-
software --details-pkg=ohmygiraffe" does not work, and there seems to be
no equivalent option for snaps. I can pass --search=ohmygiraffe but that
shows search results with one matching result, not the actual install
screen for the snap.

[Bug 1626494] [NEW] Some app screenshots wrongly stretched in Ubuntu version of Gnome Software

2016-09-22 Thread Stuart Langridge
Public bug reported:

Looking at Thunar in Gnome Software, the Ubuntu version of GS stretches
the screenshot, making it look ugly. Upstream apparently doesn't do this
and uses grey letterboxing. (See attached screenshots.)

[Bug 1581782] [NEW] Printed filed are incomplete (missing all text, some images) in evince but not flpsed

2016-05-14 Thread Stuart Langridge
Public bug reported:

When I try to print PDFs from evince, the resulting printed page
contains only the first header image (if any) of the PDF and none of the
other images or text.

Additional information:

1. printing text from other non-PDF applications, such as LibreOffice Writer,
works fine
2. printing the same PDF from flpsed works fine
3. printing the same PDF from xournal shows the same problem

This suggests that the issue is not specific to evince but is something
lower-level, but I don't know which lower-level component would be the
problem.

Since printing works fine from some places I don't believe this is a
printer problem, but if it helps my printer is a networked Kyocera Mita
FS-1010. I have tried using both the "Kyocera FS-1020
Foomatic/Postscript [en]" driver and the "recommended" "Kyocera Mita
FS-1010 [en]" driver and the same problem is evident.

[Bug 1492783] [NEW] GPS does not work on my Bq E5

2015-09-06 Thread Stuart Langridge
Public bug reported:

I have a Bq E5 (not an E4.5) and the GPS does not seem to work. The
SensorsStatus app shows GPS as returning no results for location (every
reading ("Latitude", "Longitude", etc) is shown as a dash, except
"Method" which is "Satellite" and "Speed" which is "nan") . I have
attached various logfiles in the hope that they will help. I have tried
turning off location detection and GPS and turning them back on again,
to no avail. I have also tried turning off wifi, to no avail.

[Bug 1457438] [NEW] files not shown when known to exist

2015-05-21 Thread Stuart Gillies
Public bug reported:

When using dia I saved some .png images, as I had done before with the
same names. Going to nautilus in order to select those images, I find
that they are not listed, yet the dia save dialogue does show them.
Reloading did not find them. See attached screenshot, which shows both
the nautilus window after a reload and the dia dialogue.

Later, opening a new nautilus window did find the files.

So, why did they not show when I first looked? I have observed this
problem before but did not keep records. This time I thought it
worthwhile.

Files are:
timetrial_duties2.png
regatta_duties2.png

I'm using a fully up-to-date 14.04 on an AMD 64 motherboard and Dia-
gnome 0.97.2

[Bug 1283003] Re: [Bluetooth + 14.04] Bluetooth headsets are not working after last couple of updates

2014-06-09 Thread Stuart Gillies
Well I now have BT working in A2DP mode. Hopefully it will stay working.
There was never any problem pairing or connecting, just no sound would
come out and the sound settings screen did not offer any choices.

So, once paired and "pulseaudio -k" issued (but I don't know if that is
needed or not):

In the Sound Settings window, the headset is visible but does not offer
any options to choose a profile.

In bluetooth settings, pairing is shown but not profiles

However, found by accident, right-clicking on the entry in the Blueman
screen offers the option to select an audio profile. This was set to
'none' by default (why I cannot imagine). Setting it to High Fidelity
fixed the problem immediately.

Why have default settings that cannot produce the output that every user
is going to need? Weird. And why have both sound settings and
bluetooth settings screens, and yet the crucial function is on a blueman
screen that does not come up when looking at the settings? Bluetooth
settings and blueman should be merged.

There still remains the problem that the sound settings screen does not
allow the profile to be selected, though it did in 12.04.

The other problem of course is that there are no definitive and reliable
user functional instructions for this (or indeed most of Ubuntu) and
major searching of individual users problems and attempted fixes is
needed to find clues. 14.04 is an LTS release and all this stuff should
'just work'. Using Ubuntu is more like a research project than using a
working system.

I appreciate that lots of people give up their effort to develop Ubuntu
and other distros, and that is appreciated. But things that work (as all
this did in 12.04) should not be tinkered with until they then fail.

Now I feel better.

Bluetooth working well for a headset on 12.04, not working on 14.04,
either as new install or as upgrade. It pairs normally, but on one
machine (new install) does not appear in sound settings, on the other it
appears but in neither case does it switch sound from speakers to the

[Bug 1238410] Re: Inconsistent cursor visibility with cursor plugin enabled

2013-11-18 Thread Stuart Bishop
Per duped Bug #1237218, the manifestation I see of this is that very
occasionally I log in (not having touched the mouse at all so I'm unsure
if it is working on the greeter screen), and I find that there is no
mouse visible in Unity. It is still active, as I can use the invisible
mouse pointer to click on things. Using keyboard navigation to log out
and then logging in again, the problem is probably gone and the mouse
pointer visible again.

[Bug 1099972] Re: Bluetooth devices are not able to control and display playing music from apps and web apps consistently

2013-10-30 Thread Stuart Langridge
This isn't just about the media keys. Remote Bluetooth devices, such as
car stereos, can also display the name, duration, and current position
of a song that's playing. The media keys don't know that, and shouldn't.
Possibly this could be implemented by both indicator-sound and gnome-
settings-daemon working in concert; the reason I suggested that it
should be implemented *by* indicator sound is that indicator-sound
already knows what's playing and what's next, and it knows how to
control the currently playing media player, all via MPRIS. Therefore,
implementing this all in indicator-sound would mean that only one thing
on the device needs to know how to implement the complicated Bluetooth
APIs, and any Ubuntu app which correctly integrates with the Sound Menu
will also work perfectly with Bluetooth devices without having to do
*anything* else, even handling media keys. A music application should
not hav to itself contain a bunch of bluetooth code for sending song
metadata, I think.

Even if the media keys stuff does get handled by gnome-settings-daemon,
the Sound Menu should be involved in order to send the metadata of the
currently playing song to a remote bluetooth device, so I'm re-adding
indicator-sound to this.

** Package changed: gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu) => indicator-sound
(Ubuntu)

[Bug 1018718] Re: columns width redrawn by multiple events

2013-07-23 Thread Stuart Gillies
This is a real nusiance on my 12.10 64 bit plain vanilla instalation.
It seems to set the filename column to accommodate the longest name
(undesirable) and then the columns leap about when you click out of the
window, or back in. It may be of 'low' importance according to the
techies but it is a major cosmetic snafu when compared with other
systems where the user experience matters.

I'm using Adwaita.

Why not simply leave the column widths the way the user sets them?

[Bug 1053217] Re: gdm leaking filehandles, causing "too many open files"

2013-07-23 Thread Stuart Longland
Hi,

Is there any possibility of this patch being reviewed and included in
the Ubuntu 10.04 series? We just had the customer at this site ring up
complaining that they couldn't log in today. Turns out something
reverted our patched gdm package back to the original Ubuntu one.

Think: big industrial system, and when this problem occurs we have to
boot everyone off to restart gdm. It was good until the old package got
instated then the service restarted, causing the old problem to occur
once more. This is our problem, but you could help us a little if you
put out an updated gdm binary.

Or, as a work around: maybe tell us a way we can stop the update manager
from messing with the one we have now.

The original patch is linked in the original post, my revised patch is
supplied, and I've given detail on how to reproduce the problem and how
to check if the problem is fixed. Is there anything else I need to
supply in order to get this bug resolved?

[Bug 1190237] [NEW] Nautilus "Search when typing" box persists

2013-06-12 Thread Stuart Harrell
Public bug reported:

By default, Nautilus will perform a search/select files in the folder as
users type into the window. This takes input through a text box that
appears below the bottom-right of Nautilus.

If I enter some text into the box, and then click off of Nautilus into
(say) Firefox, then the box will still appear over my Firefox window.

[Bug 94014] Re: In list view, the columns' size is not remembered

2012-12-28 Thread Stuart Gillies
The problem now seems to be that the name column is set to the width of
the longest file name. If you have a rogue filename then the column can
be off the screen and very hard to correct. When corrected the new
column width does not stick so next time you open the same directory you
have to do it all again. It just needs to remember the last width used
for the directory or set a maximum initial width that is less than the
width of the screen.

[Bug 1086208] [NEW] Shake password window immediately, not after a few seconds

2012-12-03 Thread Stuart Langridge
Public bug reported:

The password dialog to sign back in when the screen is locked shakes if
an incorrect password is entered, and this is a good idea. However, I
think it would be improved if it shook immediately when an incorrect
password is entered. I understand that delaying for a few seconds is a
good idea (it prevents password-guess bombardment) but currently if I
enter my password and get it wrong, I see the password dialog freeze for
a few seconds and *then* shake. So, after about 500ms, I *know* that
it's going to shake, but it doesn't happen; I have to wait. I think the
experience would be improved if the shake happened immediately, even if
I am prevented from trying again for a few seconds.

[Bug 1012277] Re: Closing laptop lid should not blank external monitor

2012-10-08 Thread Stuart Cianos
Unfortunately, on a Dell Lattitude E6420 the behavior is not resolved;
booting while docked results in an inability to bring display up on
any/all monitors (including laptop internal display). Booting with
laptop lid open results in docked monitors displaying correctly. After
booting, closing laptop lid results in DPMI turning on for all monitors
(including docked).

[Bug 1055766] Re: grep -R doesn't automatically search amazon

2012-09-27 Thread Stuart Prescott
It would be shortsighted to do this only for grep.

A better approach would be to set PROMPT_COMMAND for the shell in
/etc/bash.bashrc to an appropriate shell function. The last command
executed is available as `history 1` in that handler:

--- bash.bashrc.orig2012-09-27 16:52:30.452001532 +0100
+++ bash.bashrc 2012-09-27 16:54:24.312515801 +0100
@@ -53,3 +53,6 @@
fi
}
 fi
+
+PROMPT_COMMAND='/usr/lib/ubuntu-amazon/prompthandler "$(history 1)"'
+

The handler can then work out what sort of output the user really wanted
to see in their shell based on the command given and also the arguments.
Commands like "nslookup", "dig" and "hosts" could offer registration
deals from GoDaddy. Commands like "passwd" could offer to sell the user
books on managing security policies. Commands like "vlc", "mplayer"
could could sell videos and music.

Communicating the command and arguments to an external server would
presumably be necessary, but I can't imagine anyone objecting to that.

[Bug 1053217] Re: gdm leaking filehandles, causing "too many open files"

2012-09-19 Thread Stuart Longland
Okay, I can confirm this would appear to fix the problem.

Test procedure:

1. Log in remotely to the affected machine using ssh, run the following
command:

   $ sudo watch ls -l /proc/$( pidof gdm-binary )/fd

2. Start a remote X session with that host (through Xnest, plain X,
whatever)... observe that new files are opened.

3. Close the X session, observe that the files are not removed from the
list. In my case, this looked like this:

Vanilla Ubuntu gdm build.

[Bug 1053217] [NEW] gdm leaking filehandles, causing "too many open files"

2012-09-19 Thread Stuart Longland
Public bug reported:

At a client's site (a large mining company here in Queensland) we have a
Ubuntu 10.04 virtual machine running MacroView SCADA in a dr:bd high
availability cluster. Workstations connect to the server via XDMCP for
control of the local plant.

In the past they ran two discrete Ubuntu servers, which used to run
reliably for months at a time. Since the switch to the high
availability cluster, they now find gdm will refuse to accept new logins
after about 6 weeks of operation until the gdm service is restarted.
The restart of gdm has the effect of booting off everyone currently
logged in -- so for a few seconds, everyone loses control of the
processing plant while people re-connect, every 6 weeks.

The logs show the following:
Sep 20 08:23:38 cgmv1 gdm-binary[31050]: CRITICAL: could not add display to
access file: Too many open files
Sep 20 08:23:38 cgmv1 gdm-binary[31050]: WARNING: Unable to set up access
control for display 1691
Sep 20 08:23:38 cgmv1 gdm-binary[31050]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted
0.010690 seconds

Doing a search, it would appear this is a file-handle leaking bug
reported to Red Hat back in February 2010:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=562143

Comment #2 of that bug has a patch that allegedly fixes the problem. I
have hand-applied the patch against the latest stable source package of
gdm (2.30.2.is.2.30.0), which I have attached here and am in the process
of testing.

[Bug 969314] [NEW] logs out instead of shutting down

2012-03-30 Thread Stuart Bleeden
Public bug reported:

I discovered that mysteriously when shutting down or restarting through
Unity in Oneiric 11.10 with the 3.0.0-17 kernel in the 64-bit version on
my computer resulted in a simple log-out. I could not shut down from the
log in screen. Shutting down via the terminal was just fine until i
turned it on, in which Unity was broken. The effects and controls were
messed up. I was able to fix it by logging out and logging in using the
lxde environment aand reinstalling unity via synaptics. Has anybody else
been able to reproduce this and figure out what causes unity to corrupt?

[Bug 651764] Re: gwibber.log attached by apport contains private information

2012-02-27 Thread Stuart Bishop
I'm not affected now because gwibber is not crashing now. I have no idea
if gwibber.log is still being attached to public bug reports when
gwibber crashes.

The private information I refer to in the bug description are account
names. These are still being logged to gwibber.log, which seems fine.
However account names are not suitable for attaching to public bug
reports, at least without asking.

[Bug 885146] [NEW] Archive Manager fails to handle password-protected ZIP files

2011-11-02 Thread Stuart Shelton
Public bug reported:

Upon trying to open a password-protect ZIP file in Archive Manager/file-roller,
I'm correctly prompted for a password. However, on pressing enter/clicking
"OK", I then get an error dialog stating:

An error occurred while extracting files.
> Command Line Output
error: must give decryption password with -P option

... on trying again without quitting file-roller, I'm not prompted for a
password - it simply shows the same dialog. If I deliberately enter the
*wrong* password, then the "Password required" dialog immediately re-
opens - so it's not a mis-typed password issue.

Other files succeed, though. Two thoughts about the password for the
problematic file:

* It started with a hypen;
* It contained a "<" character.

... so is this a case of insufficient quoting/guarding?

[Bug 676828] Re: Contacts does not show up in empathy contact list

2011-10-19 Thread Stuart Rossiter
Just an update re #25 and #32. The Telepathy PPA updates appear to be
causing some strangeness for me (some GoogleTalk contacts were always
shown as offline when they were online) so, since this is now fixed for
the base LTS version, I suggest people revert back to this.

I used ubuntu-tweak to make this painless (as per
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/29584/safely-remove-ppas-and-roll-back-
to-stable-versions-in-ubuntu). Otherwise, you need to find the full set
of packages installed from the PPA, check the versions in official repos
and do manual re-installs to these specific versions (a PITA).

2011-10-17 Thread Stuart Rossiter
Just to note that upgrading to the latest Lucid telepathy PPA fixes this
(see this Ubuntu forums thread:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1594248). So this suggests
that, if it is the GTalk protocol change in comment #24, the telepathy
guys have already fixed it.

Other workaround is obviously to switch to Pidgin.

[Bug 856218] [NEW] Overflowing the input window in IRC causes the window to lock

2011-09-22 Thread Stuart Metcalfe
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 758374 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/758374

Public bug reported:

If I have my IRC window full-screen and type more text than fits in a
single row of the text input field, the window locks and I need to close
all tabs in that window then re-open them to be able to continue
chatting. Interestingly:

 * closing each tab doesn't update the UI so it looks like all tabs are still
open until I close the last, then the window disappears. The window title is,
however, updated with the new tab's title.
 * if I press enter after the long string has caused the window to freeze, the
string is sent to the channel but I don't see it and it doesn't appear in my
chat logs.

FWIW, Pidgin handles this overflow nicely by increasing the vertical
size of the input field, allowing multi-line entry.

[Bug 799601] [NEW] Can't see that a long-running large-data file copy is progressing

2011-06-19 Thread Stuart Langridge
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

If copying a large amount of data on a relatively slow network
connection, it's impossible to see whether the copy is actually working
or has frozen. For example, showing "17.2GB of 30GB copied (220k/sec),
estimated time remaining 18 hours". If that copy process freezes, or the
network drops out, it's almost impossible to tell that it's done so; the
17.2GB will eventually change to 17.3GB, but you have to watch the thing
for 5-10 minutes to see that change. The progress bar will not move for
the same amount of time, and that's even harder to detect a change in
anyway. The average transfer speed also doesn't help; if you've had a
long sustained transfer at 220k/sec (12 hours, say, so far) and the
current speed is actually 6k/sec, the average won't change fast enough
to be detected.

Note: this is not a call for some sort of "fake progress indicator",
like a spinner, unless that spinner actually stops spinning if progress
stops. I had to resort to dropping to the terminal and "ls -lR"ing the
copying files to see if the size of one of them was incrementing (which
is very hard, because you don't know which one is currently being copied
and it may be in a heavily nested subfolder).

One obvious but user-hostile fix would be to show an actual byte count
for amount copied (18253611008 bytes of 30GB copied) because you can see
that changing. Another might be to change the "average speed counter" to
much much more heavily weight recent changes to the speed, but it
wouldn't be visible that that was actually the case and so would only
help people who knew that nautilus did this. A third way might be to
have a "details" expander which shows the name and byte count of the
current file being copied (at which point this becomes fix 1, show the
byte count, but hidden behind an expander).

** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu)

[Bug 673591] Re: All IMAP Folders keep disappearing, reappear after opening "Subscriptions"

2011-03-04 Thread Stuart Cianos
Looks like some script kiddies ran a brute force attack on the pop3 and
got lucky, which also got them smtp from what I can see in my logs...
Didn't use any vulns and SELinux is enabled on those servers, so looks
like my morning tomorrow will involve denyhosts monitoring my auh
logs... for mail instead of just ssh.

[Bug 721585] [NEW] "Free space" figure in CD burner is misleading: looks like there is not enough space on CD

2011-02-18 Thread Stuart Langridge
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus-cd-burner

When burning an ISO file to a disc (for example, an Ubuntu ISO, as
recommended on
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto#Ubuntu), the "Write to
Disc" window says "Select a disc to write to", and shows (with a blank
CD) "Blank CD-R Disc: 4.4MB of free space". (See screenshot.) It is not
clear that that 4.4MB is what will remain *after* the chosen ISO has
been built: that is, that the CD size is actually 4.4MB *bigger* than
the ISO. I thought that I had a broken CD which I'd previously burned as
a coaster and so only had 4.4MB of space in total on it, and spent time
going through my blank CDs to try and find one with enough "free space"
to actually burn the ISO I want.

Suggested fixes:
1. Say "Blank CD-R Disc: 702MB of free space"
2. Say "Blank CD-R Disc: 4.4MB more free space than needed"
3. Say "Blank CD-R Disc: enough space available"
4. Something else.
