[Bug 1698351] Re: Search in Nautilus Files does not allow sorting of results
Has this been fixed in the latest ubuntu 22.04 lts? If it has been fixed I cant find confirmation of it, the search for answers has been frustrating. Thanks to rickywales who mentioned "nemo" in his post on 2018-06-24, which I've installed and seem to have the search sort function I deserve, NAY, we all deserve! I try to resist posting anything on these sort of sites, so apologies for any issues I cause by doing so. [Bug 1395301] [NEW] Inconsistent terminology for Bluetooth pairing
Public bug reported: The Personal File Sharing Preferences window has two sections relating to Bluetooth, and those use different terminology (and user interface features) to describe Bluetooth pairing, both from one another and from the main Bluetooth settings. Under Share Files over Bluetooth, the requirement for pairing is controlled by a tickbox labelled Require remote devices to bond with this computer, while under Receive Files over Bluetooth, it's controlled by a pop-up menu labelled Accept files: with options Always and Only for set up devices. As far as I can tell from the docuementation (which disagrees slightly about how the user interface should look), these controls have equivalent effects and control whether files can be respectively browsed or sent by unpaired devices. Meanwhile, the Bluetooth indicator menu uses the phrase Set-up [sic] New Device, the Bluetooth pane of System Settings describes certain devices as Paired, and the Ubuntu Desktop Guide explains how to Connect your computer to a Bluetooth device but helpfully explains that This is also called pairing the Bluetooth devices. Personally, I think that both of these settings should be tickboxes, and their labels should both be phrased in terms of paired deviced, since that's standard Bluetooth terminology. For consistency with the Ubuntu Desktop Guide, perhaps connected would be better (but I think it's less obvious what it means). PS: I've just found the Control sharing over Bluetooth page of the Ubuntu Desktop Guide, which adds to the fun by introducing trusted devices, which are apparently yet another way of talking about paired devices. [Bug 1228765] Re: [FFe] Implement DisplayConfig dbus interface and transition to gnome-desktop 3.10
Hey all, I'm not sure if I should be posting to this bug or some other tracking type bug, or even as a github issue at https://github.com/darkxst/displayconfig so here goes...correct me if I'm wrong. I've been trying to get gnome-3.10 on Trusty using Jackson's packages for unity-settings-daemon and unity-control-center along with Tim's displayconfig pulled from his github repo. Everything is almost there except for the following issues: 1. Clicking 'Apply' in unity-control-center's 'Screen Display' dialog after making a change does not present the confirmation dialog messagebox that states Do you want to keep these display settings? with the option to 'Revert', 'Confirm' or 'Cancel'. As a consequence the timer for this messagebox silently ticks down in the background and the changed settings automatically revert to the previous setting. Some source digging reveals this messagebox is part of gnome-shell in js/ui/windowManager.js :( 2. In some rare instances, constantly clicking the 'Apply' button does actually get the setting to finally stick without it timing out, but the setting is not saved between desktop sessions. Let me know if I can do anything more to test, or even if this approach is still being developed as it's been a month since there was any action on this. [Bug 40872] Re: Desktop icons are allowed to overlap
Folks, here is my dos centavos, dva kopekie, two cents, or whatever. . . . Note: Distro used is Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. 1. Allowing physical icons to overlap is just plain messy and un- professional. Most of the places I have worked for had a bug-rating from 1-4, 1 being hotter-than-hell and 4 being yea, alright already! However, they also had another bug level - 5 - which was reserved for bugs that - though maybe not hyper-critical - needed to be addressed ASAP because they made the company, or product, look silly, stupid, or maintained by the gorillas at the City Zoo. Things like misspelling the company's name, placing the Corporate Logo as a mirror-image, or on it's side. Or a ridiculously obvious GUI/usability issue that looks like the developer hadn't had his morning coffee yet. 2. My suggestions: (a) Create a default size, especially width, (X by Y), that icons must stay within. If an icon represents something that can have a preview, it should be scaled to fit the default icon space. If it's considered worth it, an icon with a preview can explode the preview to a larger, more easily seen size, upon mouse-over. Of course, the preview would be like a tool-tip/text box that can cover a portion of the desktop while the mouse is within it. (b) Allow a non-selected icon to show, at most, two lines of it's title with an ellipsis if it was truncated. (c) Force the icon label to fit in a space only slightly larger than the icon size itself (i.e. if the icon matrix is X by Y, than the icon label would have to fit within a X+2 width space, wrapping as necessary, and truncated to two lines if not selected. (d) Make the icon spacing a ***user-configurable setting*** (=== Hint! Hint!) as it is in Windows. (e) Create, adopt, and maintain some kind of User Interface and Usability standard that - once adopted - would become mandatory by consensus - in pretty much the same way that various distributions have rules for how bugs are created and reported, code modules interact, etc. etc. etc. These rules are necessary so that everyone is on the same page of the play-book. Can you imagine what it would be like if every software company out there could just arbitrarily decide how a CD/DVD should be formatted - or if an application developer just decided to write whatever the heck he wanted, willy-nilly all over the hard-drive platters - without regard to what someone else may have done before? This wouldn't be bazaar, it would be - literally - bizarre! Along with totally un-workable. Even in a bazaar, booths are laid out in an orderly way, each booth getting only so much space, so that all the vendors are easily accessible to the customers, without stepping on each-other's toes. (f) Find out whomever coded the desktop so that different icons could totally overlap and hide each other - hang 'em by their feet, and beat them senseless with a short bat. Hmmm. . . . You know? THAT might just be the User usability feedback method we've been looking for! Finally, developers would take us seriously. . . . (just kidding, but sometimes I am SO tempted.) Re: Copying Windows (slightly off topic) It appears that there is a small, but vocal, group that believes that Ubuntu/Debian/Fedora/SuSE/etc. should be as un-like Windows as possible - and they seem to want to be as much like the Mac as they can without being sued. And that's their right. However. I'd also like to see a desktop design started that would try to create the same look-and-feel as Windows - short of being sued - because (IMHO) that would greatly help the cross-over user become more relaxed with Linux. And I'd gladly join whatever maintainer group was created to develop this. What say ye? [Bug 734552] Re: Memory leak in Nautilus?
Ref: question #148866 in Launchpad. I have taken the (admittedly great) liberty of inviting the Kernel team to weigh-in on this since I am beginning to suspect that this may actually be a kernel issue. Summary: When moving huge files - hundred+gig to terabyte sized file groups - eventually all available RAM and then all available swap is consumed. Running huge file/multi-file copies or moves either from Nautilus (drag- and-drop) or from within a terminal window causes large amounts of memory to be consumed that is not released when the copy is done. Subsequent file copies/moves simply add to the memory consumed. Multiple, simultaneous huge file/group copies simply pour gasoline [petrol] on a raging fire. This has been a problem for me since at least Feb. 22 - 2010 - probably before - and has cost me massive crashes on my file server on multiple occasions. To duplicate this, you will need massive amounts of storage - in the multiple T range - and it will be necessary to create folders full of multi-gig files in the 200G to fractional-T size to move around. (e.g. If I have two 2T drives, one that has abut 1.5+ T of data on it, and the other empty, and I run a cp -a -v /mnt/huge_drive/* /mnt/huge_drive_2 - and watch the memory allocation either in SysMon, or via top, you will see memory climb steadily (top shows increasing amounts of buffer used). If you are really sadistic, you can repeat the command again once it finishes. My box has 4 gig RAM, and almost 2 gig swap, and doing this a few times rapidly runs all available memory and swap - and then some! - right down the tubes. Please review question #148866 in launchpad: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+question/148866 for additional, possibly relevant, info on this issue. . -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/734552 Title: Memory leak in Nautilus/Kernel? -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 736669] Re: Dictionary app takes user to French from Rhamnus catharticus link
Actually, it now appears that many entries in the Dictionary app are messed up, containing parts of entries that belong under other words, sometimes in multiple pieces, interspersed with part of the entry that was requested (is it all there? how can we tell?). Sole has part of the entry for Sol. French has part of the entry for Sole. Rhamnus catharticus has part of the entry for French. Sol has a lot about the letter G (actually, these are related). Red has a lot about Wine (actually, these are related). Ditto White. Many words I look up have some error or such weirdness in them, and many seem correct and complete. [Bug 734552] [NEW] Memory leak in Nautilus?
Public bug reported: Yesterday when moving relatively huge amounts of data between hard drives on my system (using the GUI - drag-and-drop) I discovered that after some time I had consumed all available memory and all available swap. System: Athlon 64 X2 processor on ASUS A8R32-MVP Deluxe MoBo. 4 gig RAM 1.64 gigs Swap Ubuntu 10.04 (64 bit) Desktop edition. System configuration: 40 gig IDE mounted as root ( / ) 4x 1T SATA mounted as md0 - RAID 5 on /mnt/Storage3/Public 1x 2T eSATA mouonted on /mnt/Storage3/Public2 1x 2T eSATA mounted on /mnt/Backup 1x 2T eSATA mounted on /mnt/Backup2 Sustem is being used as a NAS file server running Samba, Apache, and SWAT System is fully up-to-date according to Update Manager, with all updates to whatever it wanted to update, kernel, firefox, and a whole laundry- list of other things. . . . Running gadgets: 1. HW-monitor running libsensors (monitoring CPU temp, both core temps, CPU and chassis fan speeds, and four voltages - vCore, 3.3v supply, 5v supply and 12v supply) 2. Weather gadget. Desktop configuration: Running the Clear (?) Desktop theme (the Windows looking desktop) I have not tried this using any other desktop configuration. Possibly relevant? During a moment of absolutely culpable stupidity, I inadvertantly deleted all the non-dot folders and files from my home directory. Not knowing any clever way to rebuild my home directory, I rebooted into the 10.04 live CD (64 bit), and copied the Ubuntu users home directory (the non-dot folders) back to my home directory, changed permissions and owner to match my user, and rebooted. Prior to this copy, I verified that none of the hidden (dot) files or folders had ben touched. I do not believe that this would have any bearing on this, but I mention it just in case. Scenerio: My 4T RAID-5 file store was becoming fuller than I could back-up so I decided to re-distribute the files by moving certain directories to Public2 (an additional drive I just added) and replacing them (on Public) with symlinks. The magnitude of the move was in the order of almost two teryabytes of data, (appx. 1.5-or-so T), to distribute the data more evenly between the two drives. About half the data was moved using cp on the command line. Parts of the data that had non-standard filenames (containing spaces, etc.) caused difficulties moving it with cp, so I used the file browser as root (gksu nautilus. . .) because some of the directories had varying permissions set. The porocess was as follows: 1. Drag directory from source to destination. 2. Wait for the copy to successfully finish. 3. Delete the original direcotry. 4. Create a symlink (drag with ctl-shift) from the new location back to the original location. This was done because only the Public directory is shared via Samba, and I wanted to keep it that way. In some cases, I moved multiple directories at the same time - some being very small (in the megabytes range) and some were relatively large (in the multiples of gigabytes range) This went on for several hours. Eventually my system virtually ground to a halt. Attempting to launch any new GUI based process failed with unable to fork - could not allocate memory (or something like that). I eventually got top running in a terminal, and discovered that all available RAM and all available swap had been consumed. I was eventually able to get the computer to shutdown, pause to catch it's breath, and restart. Performing some directory copies after the re-boot, with system monitor running on the desktop, disclosed the following: 1. Under normal operating condiditons, the system is using appx. 450 (plus or minus) megs of RAM and zero swap. 2. Copying of any amount of data using the command-line within a terminal does not affect the system memory used. There are variations in memory used - but the magnitudes are less than about 50 or so megs - it never gets as high as 500 megs used. Once the process is finished, the memory used returns to very nearly the base value - eventually dropping back to it after a moment or two. (Update: This actually depends on the amount of data being moved, and the amount of terminal activity - I have subsequently seeen it rise into the 600+megs region, but it always recovers.) 3. If I copy data using the GUI and drag and drop between different file-manager windows - the used memory rises to about 570 (plus or minus) megs used, and when the process finishes, it releases only about 20 or 30 megs - if that much. Additional directory moves cause the memory usage to continue to climb by about 100 megs per copy. Note that the majority of the copies were multi-gigabyte copies that could take from 10 minutes to an hour to complete. Rebooting the machine always restores memory - as we would expect. Top shows Nautilus consuming increasing amounts of memory every copy. I looked all over the web checking for a solution, and I even tried the apt-get remove appmenu-gtk fix -

[Bug 673322] [NEW] unplug event unnoticed while suspended
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager If I suspend my laptop (i.e. close lid), unplug it, and then open it back up again, the gnome-power-manager fails to notice that it's now unplugged. [Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment
@Mark Shuttleworth Would data collected in Windows be considered useful? Since we're using this to make a UI design change the current UI shouldn't affect it right? What matters, presumably is how we interact with documents that will look mostly the same on any operating system. I will try to collect data in Windows 7, since that is what I use day-to-day. I expect to see my mouse mostly resting on the right since English language text is usually left-aligned, so leaving the mouse on the left would obscure it. I don't have a TV though so there will be occasions where my mouse rests at a random position on the screen because I'm watching a video. My point is that everyone uses their computer for different tasks, so without defining a framework (i.e. asking where does the mouse rest while writing an email, what about when chatting, now when writing a letter...) the amount of variables involved in what individual people use their computer for will seriously wreck any chance of receiving meaningful data. -- [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to metacity in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment
@Mark Shuttleworth As promised, here's an 1.5 hour mousetrack from earlier today. I figure any longer amount of time and the data is pointless because of the sheer number of different styles of task being performed. The lines obviously show mouse movement, the circles are the mouse not moving, bigger is longer time. It is mostly me checking email, reading blogs and reading the paper. ** Attachment added: 1.5 hour mousetrack http://launchpadlibrarian.net/42203817/IOGraphica%20-%201.5%20hours%20%28from%2019-06%20to%2020-40%29.png -- [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to metacity in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

This is not a duplicate of that bug, I have no issue with where the controls are by default but setting window controls to the left on many themes in the community-themes package, causes the buttons to display incorrectly. [Bug 279569] Re: Screennresolution applet no longer asks for confirmation of new resolution settings
Luke, I hate to break the bad news to you - but (at least in Intrepid), that's NOT true. I set my screen resolution/refresh rate to something higher than my monitor could display - and I got a blank screen. I had to actually *KILL POWER* to get the beast to reboot, and when I booted into recovery mode and chose xfix - it did me absolutely 100% of zero good at all. When the system came up - still no (usable) display. The ONLY thing that worked for me was to edit the kernel= line and add -- bestResolution to the end of the line. That restored me to a bogus - but viewable - resolution. I was then able to open the screen rez applet (which would ONLY allow me to choose the abysmal resolution I had), saved, and rebooted. I then had the same abysmal resolution and refresh rate, which I could then change (and save) into something more reasonable. I don't know what xfix is *supposed* to do, but it darn sure didn't fix MY x. . . . . What say ye? [Bug 322092] [NEW] Gnome's Screen Resolution should not list un-usable resolutions
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-control-center Issue: If a particular monitor - with particular specifications and limitations - is plugged into a Windows system, attempting to change the monitor resolution is accompanied by a check-box that says Hide resolutions this monitor cannot display. This has the valuable characteristic of only showing the user VALID choices. Ubuntu (8.10, as amended) does not do this. It lists every possible resolution under the sun (or so it seems), including ones that would render the display unusable - or possibly even damaging to the hardware. A user migrating from Windows to Ubuntu - trying to set his screen resolution or such like - is used to seeing a subset of values that represent VALID values - and when he sees things like 12,000 x 10,500 :-P he's likely to say Oooh! Neeto!! I wonder what THAT will be like - and (like me) go ahead and choose it, which renders his system unusable. Suggestion: Can we implement a way whereby Gnome, X, the screen resolution applet, or whatever, can read the plug-and-play characteristics of the monitor in use, and adjust the display resolution list accordingly. Can we implement a way whereby Gnome (et.al.) can auto-detect if the current screen resolution is not consistent with the currently plugged in monitor? (i.e. If a user normally uses his computer on a 1200 x 1000 monitor, but unplugs that monitor and defaults back to a monitor which maxes out at 1024 x 768, that the system will auto-adjust to accommodate the new display? [Bug 320651] [NEW] file browser window title bar becomes blank, and controls dissapear
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome Issue: When I open a file browser window - pointing to virtually anywhere - clicking elsewhere, (i.e. a child window, inside the current window, the menu panel bar, etc.), the title bar sometimes turns white (as if the window had lost focus), and the controls within the title bar are either poorly drawn or disappear entirely. Note to Developers: This particular machine (a laptop running an AMD Athlon X2-64 (dual core) ), experiences this problem in both 32 and 64 bit modes, and this problem persisted after being updated from the raw state at initial install to the current updated state as of Jan 23, 2009. Additional note: This might be related to something system specific on this machine, as I have installed the 32 bit version of Ubuntu on several other machines here - and I do not recall seeing this problem on the others. Update: This issue is not confined to file manager windows - the title bar on Firefox exhibits this same action while I am typing this - and it can be made to flip states by simply mousing over the control button area on the top right. I attempted to grab a screen-shot using Applications -- Accessories -- Take Screen Shot but taking the screen shot causes the title bar to become normal again. Expected Results: 1. The item selected displays it's contents in the main window area. 2. Since the focus of the window has not changed, the appearance of the title bar does not change. 3. All controls within the title bar remain visible and clearly drawn. Actual Results: 1. The item selected displays in the main window as expected. 2. When switching from one drive to the next (in the side pane), the window appears to loose and gain focus. 3. After two or three of these odd flips in focus, the controls on the title bar - and even the outline of the title bar itself - become indistinct and poorly drawn, if not invisible. 4. The controls still work because if you place your mouse pointer over the place where a control should be, depending on the individual condition of the window at that moment in time, either the control and menu-bar re-appear in color, or even if it does not visibly appear, the correct control action takes place if it is selected. [Bug 320651] Re: Title bar becomes blank with visual effects turned on.
I suspect that this is the correct package, based on the log report containing libgnome-window-settings1 1:2.24.0.1-0ubuntu7.1 which I believe to be relevant to this bug. [Bug 197673] Re: gnome-display-properties should revert change automatically if not acknowledged
Unfortunately, in Ubuntu 8.10 this is still WY broken. (Ref: bug 316961) Doing the same thing - trying out resolutions on a ViewSonic A75F monitor, not only did I totally hoze my session - I hozed it in classic style. It took me several hours of hacking around with a recovery terminal before I - by the Grace of God Almighty - finally got my session un- hozed. The only way I could see a non-technical user doing this would be to do a *TOTAL* nuke and re-install. IMHO, a rather drastic workaround, 'eh? {:-p I am adding the requested behavior changes to this comment - some are relatively easy (changes to the default Gnome setup), others are more complex (the actual revert logic). - - - - - - BEGIN INSERTED TEXT - - - - - - Requested changes: 1. Implement the display time-out feature as noted above. 2. Add an item to the recovery menu that allows the user to reset the display parameters to a sane value, (say 800x600, 60hz). 3. (Optional) Add, as one of the boot choices, an option that boots normally except it changes the screen resolution to something sane. [Bug 279569] Re: Screennresolution applet no longer asks for confirmation of new resolution settings
Ref: Bug 316961 (duplicate of this) I experienced the exact same issue, and (not finding THIS bug), wrote it up yet again. Essentially my steps to reproduce involved selecting an invalid display resolution and accepting it. The result (as of 8.10) is a functionally bricked box. Even though I am not a raw newbie, I researched and jumped through hoops for several hours before I returned my system to a usable state. I eventually got it back by passing -- bestResolution as a kernel parameter through GRUB. (the recovery menu was ZERO help to me) and even with that, it originally got stuck in the unusable resolution first - then when I tried to kill via CTL-ALT-DEL, it then (eventually) reverted to a 800x600 - 60hz resolution that I could save and then reboot into to put it back the way it was before. And yes, I agree, a bug like this that has the potential for bricking (rendering un-usable), a customer's system without a clear path to recovery should be ranked as something higher than a snooze-fest. :-) (I'd be tempted to call it release-critical) I made some recommendations within my own bug report which I will transcribe here for everyone's benefit: Suggested changes to solve the bug's problem: 1. Resolve the lack of confirmation issue noted above. 2. Provide a specific entry in the recovery menu that will reset the display resolution to something sane. 3. Provide a specific entry within the default entries created within GRUB that allows a reboot into a sane resolution. (Note that simply passing -- bestResolution may not be the best answer.) I realize that this is three things - but to ensure the best possible user experience, I believe that all three of these things should be completed under the scope of this bug. What say ye?
