[Bug 500417] Re: nautilus doesn't honor gnome theme

2010-05-03 Thread itsjustarumour
@Pedro - OK, perhaps this is a bug with gnome-settings-daemon, rather
than Nautilus. I didn't mean to appear rude, but I am not a developer,
so I'd don't know which it is (I'm just trying to be helpful, and to
report bugs and get issues fixed). If this is a bug in gnome-settings-
daemon, then I feel the bug should be passed on to somebody who deals
with gnome-settings-daemon, rather than just being marked as invalid.

@everybody - I'm still getting this bug on Lucid 10.04 final. It has
happened with my own icon and GTK2.0 themes, and also with the default
Lucid themes.

@Willjcroz - yup, thats exactly what happens to me...

@Ihotari - thanks for suggesting that workaround - I'll give it a try.

@Pedro - just one last thing - I think there is a duplicate bug of this
one - see bug 516384 - there is some discussion on that bug thread,
which is marked as being a Nautilus bug - that is why I was thinking
this bug should be marked as a Nautilus bug as well - perhaps both bugs
should be marked as a gnome-settings-bug - what do you (and the other

[Bug 508632] Re: [FFe] Toggle button for Nautilus location field gone

2010-04-30 Thread itsjustarumour
I also miss this functionality, as in my day-to-day work, I am very
frequently copying file paths from Nautilus and pasting them into a
terminal.

This change just causes me aggravation, and has severely slowed down my
workflow. At times, I have now found myself using Dolphin because its
quicker and easier to use to perform the regular tasks I need to
perform.

If the change was considered necessary, then there should have been an
option in Nautilus Properties to switch the button back on if that is
what a user wants. Linux and FOSS is meant to be about choice and
freedom, after all.

Telling users to use Ctrl+L is not a valid response to this problem.
That is not a solution, it is a workaround for power users. No
regular users know about this shortcut. In fact, most experienced users
won't know about this shortcut. I certainly didn't.

Keyboard shortcuts are there to provide power users who can remember
shortcuts with a way to perform regular tasks quicker. They should
NEVER be a complete replacement for GUI-based functionality. This
breaks one of the biggest, most basic rules of GUI design.

Status in “gnome-panel” package in Ubuntu: Fix Released

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: gnome-panel

 What happens:

When I start my Karmic 9.10 machine and the desktop loads, gnome-panel fails
to start. I can start it by running gnome-panel in terminal. As a
workaround, I have to add gnome-panel to the list of Startup
 applications.

I have corresponded with several people on the Ubuntu forums who have had
this same problem, although it seems - surprisingly - that nobody has
reported this as a bug yet (apologies if I'm duplicating an
already-reporting bug here, but I had a search and couldn't find one).

I don't get this problem after a fresh install - only after I have installed
my normal set of programs from the Ubuntu repos and then added my own icon
and GTK 2.0 themes. However - I have got the same problem on every single
install of Karmic 9.10 that I have done (approx 10 installs, between 3
machines) - so it is reproducible every time.

Also, at approximately the same time that Karmic was released, Ubuntu
automatic updates broke gnome-panel on my Jaunty 9.04 install, producing
 exactly the same problem.

 What should happen:

gnome-panel should start when the desktop is loaded, without manual
 intervention from the user.

 Technical details:

Distro Version - Ubuntu Karmic 9.10, 32-bit, default fresh install with
 latest updates

[Bug 527231] [NEW] gnome-settings-daemon crashes on startup

2010-02-24 Thread itsjustarumour
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

What happens:

In approximately 1 in 3 reboots, gnome-settings-daemon fails to start.
This means that Ubuntu loads with the GNOME icon theme and the GNOME GTK
2.0 theme, rather than the default Ubuntu icon theme and GTK 2.0 theme.

I have been running a Lucid 10.04 test install, and updating it daily
(currently at Alpha 2). Everything has been working fine since 10.04
Alpha 1 was first released.

TI first saw this bug after the updates to Lucid 10.04 Alpha 2 on 22nd
February 2010.

I have previously had exactly this same problem on all 3 of my Karmic 9.10
machines - see bug reports here for example:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/500417
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/516384

Is this reproducible:
No - its random - but it happens every day.

What should happen:
gnome-settings-daemon should not fail to start on system startup. Correct
Ubuntu icon theme and GTK 2.0 theme should load.

2010-02-24 Thread itsjustarumour
@Draycen - I've been scratching my head trying to work out the cause of
this bug.

Do you have an ideas about what might be corrupted, to cause this
problem? Is there a particular config file in ~/home that I can try
recreating to see if I can fix it? Or is there a particular
process/daemon that needs to start, to make the gnome-panel load? Or
anything else I can look at to perhaps get some clues? (feel free to go
all technical on me at this point, if it helps!)

When I first got this bug I did try numerous fixes on the Ubuntu forums,
but nothing worked...

@Draycen - dpkg --get-selections | grep -v deinstall  ubuntu-files
gives me the following list that I've added as an attachment - does this
give you what you need?

For info, since setting up these machines and getting this bug, I have
added some extra software packages from 3rd-party repos and PPAs -
including Lotus Symphony 3.0 Beta, and GIMP 2.7.1 (unstable). So if you
do some testing and try to set up a machine to reproduce this bug, there
is no need to install these packages as I know they are not the cause of
the problem.

[Bug 518873] Re: gnome-panel fails to start when desktop loads

2010-02-16 Thread itsjustarumour
@Draycen.  Hello again.

No joy with Jaunty 9.10 I'm afraid, I was hoping I might have time to do
a fresh install at the weekend and install all the packages again, but
unfortunately I didn't have time.

However, the good news is I haven't managed to reproduce the bug on my
Lucid 10.04 Alpha 2 install. I have installed almost everything on
Lucid that I had on Jaunty, and gnome-panel always starts OK. The only
thing I haven't tested yet is google-desktop-linux.

@mikef187 and trev - I'm not sure if what you guys are seeing is the
same bug as me. With this bug, gnome-panel fails to start at all, and
so I have no panels at either the top or the bottom of the screen. With
what you are describing, the panels load but they are blank (no icons or
applets etc) - please could you confirm, or perhaps enclose a
screenshot? Many thanks.

[Bug 518873] Re: gnome-panel fails to start when desktop loads

2010-02-16 Thread itsjustarumour
@Draycen - I've just finished my testing with Lucid 10.04 - I've
installed all the packages that I had on Karmic 9.10 - including google-
desktop-linux. I have done lots of experimenting, and tried very hard to
break Lucid - but so far I can't replicate this bug.

So - I consider my final verdict to be: This bug appears to be fixed in
Lucid 10.04 Alpha 2.

2010-02-14 Thread itsjustarumour
Still getting problems with this.

I'm also getting similar problems in the Lucid 10.04 alpha 2, which is
worrying.

What happens:

For example, take a look at this latest screenshot.
I have 5 random icons on my Desktop. I right-mouse-click and select Clean Up
By Name - so that the 5 icons are lined up correctly and tidily.
I then create a new .txt file and save it to my Desktop.
As you can see from the screenshot, the icon for the new .txt file doesn't
appear below the other icons - instead it appears on top of the 4th icon down.

What should happen:

The new icon should appear below the other icons.

[Bug 516384] Re: desktop theme inside nautilus is corrupted

2010-02-10 Thread itsjustarumour
Hello Pedro, thanks for taking a look at this bug.

The only way is to reproduce this bug is to keep rebooting the machine
until it happens - which is every 3rd or 4th reboot.

I checked, and when I get this problem gnome-settings-daemon is not
running.

If I run gnome-settings-daemon in terminal, I get:

i...@coolermaster:~$ gnome-settings-daemon

(gnome-settings-daemon:14305): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_propagate_error:
assertion `src != NULL' failed

(gnome-settings-daemon:14305): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_propagate_error: assertion

i...@coolermaster:~$ Unable to find a synaptics device.
Gtk-Message: Failed to load module pk-gtk-module: libpk-gtk-module.so: cannot
open shared object file: No such file or directory
i...@coolermaster:~$

This then starts gnome-settings-daemon, but takes me to the stage I
outlined in post #4. The Nautilus File Manager window and the icons on
the desktop still have the old GNOME theme, although everything else has
my own personal icon theme (NuoveXT 1.7) and GTK 2.0 theme (Brushed)

2010-02-10 Thread itsjustarumour
Hello Draycen, no problem! I can provide you with a list of installed
packages if you think it would help - although they aren't all from the
Ubuntu repos - as part of my standard Ubuntu setup I do install quite a
few packages from 3rd-party repo's like Medibuntu, GetDeb etc - although
only stable packages, nothing alpha from PPA's or anything like that
as these are production machines for me to get work done on. I also
uninstall a handful of packages, although I can't see how that would
affect this bug. Anyway, just let me know.

In the meantime, I've almost finished installing all the same packages
(or their Lucid equivalents) on my 10.04 alpha2 install, and not been
able to reproduce the bug - so perhaps its fixed in Lucid, or is an
upstream GNOME problem (I did have a quick search on GNOME Bugzilla but
couldn't find a match).

Anyway, I'll do a bit more experimenting and get back to you in a few
days with any updates!

In my case, this always happens when surfing the web with Firefox -

occasions, once I was simply reading online and on the other occasion it
happened when I started typing an address into the URL bar. And thats
all I can really say I'm afraid. If you can suggest any other log files

know as I'd be happy to help!

[Bug 516384] Re: desktop theme inside nautilus is corrupted

2010-02-08 Thread itsjustarumour
I can confirm this bug in Karmic (worked fine in Jaunty with same icon
set and GTK 2.0 theme)

What happens:

I get this problem in approximately 25% of cases. When I power on my
machine and the Desktop loads, it loads the GNOME icon set and GNOME GTK
2.0 theme, instead of my own choice of icon and GTK 2.0 theme.

If I open gnome-appearance-properties, my correct choices are selected.
If I then double-click on the correct theme in gnome-appearance-
properties, the correct icon set and GTK theme are then loaded - but to
everything EXCEPT Nautillus - the Desktop still has the GNOME icons, and
Nautilus itself still has the GNOME GTK 2.0 theme.

I've had this same problem on all 3 of my machines that run Karmic (2
desktops and a laptop), so if it is due to corruption then its
corruption that is reproducible on every machine I use.

One thing that might be important is that my icon theme is very large
(around 29,000 icons, about 300MB in size) - could this be the cause of
the problem?

Technical Details:

Distro Version - Ubuntu Karmic 9.10, 32-bit, default fresh install with latest
updates
Desktop Environment - GNOME 2.28.1 (Ubuntu 2009-11-03)
Kernel - Linux 2.6.31-19-generic
System - Athlon 64 3400 2.2GHz processor, NVidia 6800LE graphics, 1.5MB RAM

[Bug 518873] [NEW] gnome-panel fails to start when desktop loads

2010-02-08 Thread itsjustarumour
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

What happens:

When I start my Karmic 9.10 machine and the desktop loads, gnome-panel
fails to start. I can start it by running gnome-panel in terminal.
As a workaround, I have to add gnome-panel to the list of Startup
applications.

I have corresponded with several people on the Ubuntu forums who have
had this same problem, although it seems - surprisingly - that nobody
has reported this as a bug yet (apologies if I'm duplicating an already-
reporting bug here, but I had a search and couldn't find one).

I don't get this problem after a fresh install - only after I have
installed my normal set of programs from the Ubuntu repos and then added
my own icon and GTK 2.0 themes. However - I have got the same problem
on every single install of Karmic 9.10 that I have done (approx 10
installs, between 3 machines) - so it is reproducible every time.

Also, at approximately the same time that Karmic was released, Ubuntu
automatic updates broke gnome-panel on my Jaunty 9.04 install, producing
exactly the same problem.

What should happen:

gnome-panel should start when the desktop is loaded, without manual
intervention from the user.

[Bug 518873] Re: gnome-panel fails to start when desktop loads

2010-02-08 Thread itsjustarumour
Hello Draycen, thanks for taking a look at this bug.

I'm still trying to work out if its installation of a particular
software package that causes this bug. I think it must be, as I have
exactly the same set of programs installed on each Karmic machine I use.
However, so far I have been unable to narrow it down. Originally I
thought it might be caused by Ubuntu-Tweak, but then the problem
appeared again on a machine without Ubuntu-Tweak installed. So unless I
do another fresh install and install packages one at a time and reboot
to test after each one - which takes about 4 1/2 hours on my slow-ish
ADSL connection (I live a long way from the telephone exchange), then I
don't know what else to suggest. Hopefully someone else who gets this
problem might be able to add information to this log. In the meantime,
I am running a 10.04 alpha2 test install and installing a couple of
packages at a time, to see if I can replicate this bug on Lucid - but so
far its working OK.

Best Regards

2010-02-08 Thread itsjustarumour
OK, woke up this morning, switched on my PC, and the problem is back.
So this time I have some screenshots. :)

This first screenshot shows what I get when the desktop loads. Note that
it is displaying the default GNOME icon theme and the default GNOME GTK
2.0 theme on the desktop and toolbars, and also on any applications that
I open up.

Also note the AWN taskbar at the bottom - this also displays with the
wrong icon set, and some of the icons haven't loaded at all.

[Bug 516384] Re: desktop theme inside nautilus is corrupted

2010-02-08 Thread itsjustarumour
Finally, here is a third screenshot, which shows what happens when I
start my PC and the desktop loads correctly, with my correct icon and
GTK 2.0 themes (just so you can compare).

If I then open up gnome-appearance-properties, my correct settings for
my icon theme and GTK theme are displayed. If I then hit the Close
button on this window, this second screenshot shows what happens - the
correct icon theme and correct GTK 2.0 are applied on any applications I
have open, and on the AWN toolbar - but not on the Nautilus File
Browser window, and the desktop icons also stay as default GNOME
icons.?field.comment=If I then open up gnome-appearance-properties, my

[Bug 244093] Re: Checking security repository in Updates adds deb line to Third-Party Software

2008-07-08 Thread itsjustarumour
I can confirm this bug on Hardy 8.04.1 32-bit since recent updates.

All three of my Ubuntu installs are demonstrating the same problem - I
go to SystemAdministrationSoftware SourcesUpdates tab, and I am
unable to check the tick-box for Important security updates (hardy-
security).
