[Bug 258081] Re: Can't add new wallpapers using gnome interface and Images (like jpeg) are not detected as it.
That did it. Thanks! Any idea what might have put the entries there in the first place? I see that the directory has *not* been automatically been recreated, so there must have been something I did which caused it to be created ... Other than 'update-mime-database' that is, since I did not run that until after the problem occurred (at the suggestion of another source). And is that "database" deprecated in favor of another store for that information? Obviously, the associations must be stored somewhere ... I could research this myself, but since you seem to understand the situation, I thought you'd know off the top of your head. ;) -- Can't add new wallpapers using gnome interface and Images (like jpeg) are not detected as it. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/258081 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 258081] Re: Can't add new wallpapers using gnome interface and Images (like jpeg) are not detected as it.
Yes, I do. Quite a few. All of them with a header that says "DO NOT EDIT". They were generated by update-mime-database. Of course, I only tried that once the failure had already occurred, so unless you have something specific in there to look for ... -- Can't add new wallpapers using gnome interface and Images (like jpeg) are not detected as it. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/258081 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 258081] Re: Can't add new wallpapers using gnome interface and Images (like jpeg) are not detected as it.
I'm not that much of a "guinea pig" as I first professed to be :) ... just got all my systems up to LTS release of Hardy. Don't really want to load a new version of the OS to test for this. If I get time (which looks none too likely right now), I can load a VM image of Jaunty and try. But as I said before, I have no idea what I did to start this. It just refused to allow new images one day. I suspect some incompatibility of a file format somewhere, maybe .gconf/desktop/gnome/background/%gconf.xml itself (written to by something newer or older than what is now trying to read/modify it). Maybe I installed a desktop "fix" ... just not sure. I will make some more detailed comparisons between the login which is still working and the one which isn't. Maybe if I can reproduce it by manhandling a certain file, that will trim down the suspect list a bit. But if it was a bug introduced by changing a file format between sub- releases ... well, it matters less and less as time goes by. [Bug 258081] Re: Can't add new wallpapers using gnome interface and Images (like jpeg) are not detected as it.
Hmmm I can: (1) change the desktop background, to a brand new file, manually by editing .gconf/desktop/gnome/background/%gconf.xml (2) change the background to a new file in another login using gnome-appearance-properties. I can't see any difference in the file permissions between the two login's .gconf directories or any (pertinent) paths beneath it. So, there is some other difference ... [Bug 258081] Re: Can't add new wallpapers using gnome interface and Images (like jpeg) are not detected as it.
One added note on this: I said "I can't change backgrounds". That is not true. I cannot *add* backgrounds. I can choose any of the 21 files it currently acknowledges, but I can not add files, either manually or through gnome-appearance-properties. [Bug 258081] Re: Can't add new wallpapers using gnome interface and Images (like jpeg) are not detected as it.
Can I pick this up where "jdamian.b" left off? I have *exactly* the same symptoms (and apt-cache output) .xsession-errors reports nothing while browsing for background files (if that's what you meant). However, I do get one error (and only one, from nautilus) when using the standard browser interface. ** (nautilus:8269): WARNING **: Unable to add monitor: Not supported Any ideas where to go from here? As far as reproducing the problem ... I have no idea what I did to "start" it. I only discovered that I could not change backgrounds, no matter what I do (copied files into /usr/share/backgrounds, change permission&owner, etc.). I'm reduced to attempting to change the background definition XML file to see if I can get it change that way (not complete as of writing). Symptoms are that: (1) only 22 of 41 files in my /usr/share/backgrounds directory even show up in the standard change dialog. (2) I browse to any directory I like, and no files show up as "images". (3) Only by selecting "All files" can I see anything in the background location browser (then I do see everything!) (4) Selecting any file does nothing, as far as I can tell. It doesn't add. It doesn't become my background. Signed, "A willing guinea pig" (aka Ken) Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and all updates as of 11/17/2008 (2.6.24-21-generic) P.S.
