[Bug 1167209] [NEW] `apport-bug $PPID` takes much longer than `apport-bug gnome-terminal`

2013-04-10 Thread l0b0
Public bug reported:

How to reproduce:
1. Open a GNOME Terminal
2. Either
2a. Run
apport-bug $PPID
or
2b. Run
apport-bug --window &
and click Close, then click on any GNOME Terminal window.

At this point, the "Collecting problem information" process indicator
runs for over 11 minutes before producing a report summary (checked with
`time`). `apport-bug gnome-terminal`, on the other hand, completed in
less than 15 seconds.

[Bug 1099436] [NEW] Opening the Find dialog sometimes clears the primary buffer

2013-01-14 Thread l0b0
Public bug reported:

How to reproduce:
1. Focus a GNOME Terminal window
2. Open the Find dialog
3. Search for a string
4. Close the Find dialog
5. Select some text in the terminal
6. Open the Find dialog again

At this point, there are two possible behaviors:
* If the Find dialog contained some text when it was closed, the selection in
the terminal window will be cleared, the text in the Find dialog will be
selected, and the primary buffer will be emptied.
* If the Find dialog was empty when it was closed, the selection and primary
buffer will be left as they were.

Maybe there's a good reason for this behavior, but I would expect the selection
and primary buffer to always be left as they were, because of two use cases:
* Select some text that you want to search, bring up the search interface,
click Backspace or Delete to clear the Find dialog, and middle-click to fill in
the selected text.
* Select some text, bring up the search interface, then start searching from
the start/end of the selection (whichever gives the biggest search space when
the direction is taken into account).

Alternatively, the selection could replace the text in the search
interface when bringing it up.

[Bug 1099424] [NEW] Find only shows first match per line

2013-01-14 Thread l0b0
Public bug reported:

How to reproduce:
1. Run `echo hello world` (without the backticks)
2. Press Ctrl-Shift-F
3. Press E
4. Click Find repeatedly

When going back through the history, this only shows the first match on
each line. That is, "h*e*llo world", then "*e*cho hello world", then
whatever is above that line in the history.

Expected behavior: Show every match (possibly non-overlapping) on each
line. . That is, "h*e*llo world", then "echo h*e*llo world", then
"*e*cho hello world", then whatever is above that line in the history.
This is very useful when searching through for example the enormous
output of a build program, or when looking for duplicate occurrences of
strings. Since the opposite use case is probably also common, it would
be nice if this were an option.

[Bug 1035843] Re: Trash doesn't work on NFS mounted partitions

2012-09-22 Thread l0b0
The user does not have access to write to the root of the partition, but
it does have read access to the root (obviously) and write access to
$HOME/.local/share/Trash and
$HOME/.local/share/Trash/info/[filename]<.number>.trashinfo, as
mentioned. But why should this matter? A normal user doesn't need access
to the root directory of the local root partition to use trash properly.

[Bug 1035843] [NEW] Trash doesn't work on NFS mounted partitions

2012-08-12 Thread l0b0
Public bug reported:

As reported elsewhere :

The /home/users directory on my host is an NFS mount connected to a
server which is not in my control. When deleting files in $HOME
(/home/users/foo) with Nautilus I get the following message:

Cannot move file to trash, do you want to delete immediately?

The file "..." cannot be moved to the trash.

Is there some way to enable trash for this mount point? I have write
access to the partition, but even after creating the expected
/home/users/.Trash-$(id -u) and setting the sticky bit, Nautilus still
fails to use the trash.

When reading this question and the Trash Specification
 I found that
$HOME/.local/share/Trash is the standard location (unless $XDG_DATA_HOME
is set), and it looks like Nautilus is only half-aware of this: It does
indeed write a
$HOME/.local/share/Trash/info/[filename]<.number>.trashinfo every time I
try to delete a file, but the files are all empty and I still keep
getting the error message.

[Bug 1001399] [NEW] Nautilus + Ctrl-Alt-F1 -> Desktop hang

2012-05-18 Thread l0b0
Public bug reported:

To reproduce (done it five times now):
1. Start the computer.
2. Select Ubuntu 2D on the login screen.
3. Log in.
4. Start Nautilus.
5. Press Ctrl-Alt-F1

What happens: The screen hangs - Nothing updates anymore. I can still
use Alt-SysRq-REISUB, but that's all.

What should happen: No hangs, please :)

To ensure that the problem is really Nautilus, I tried to start all the
programs which were running the last time it hung, one at a time,
leaving the others on in the background, and switching to VT1 and back.
It worked fine with no applications, GNOME Terminal, and Firefox, but
crashed when I also opened Nautilus.

[Bug 888578] [NEW] No keyboard/mouse input on Mac Mini 4,1

2011-11-10 Thread l0b0
Public bug reported:

[From Ask Ubuntu ]

The USB keyboard and mouse worked fine during installation, and works
fine until and including the Grub menu, but in the login screen (or
recovery menu) it doesn't work at all. I've followed recent instructions

for installing 11.04, and I'm booting with one of these Grub settings
(normal and recovery boot, respectively):

linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.38-12-generic root=/dev/sda2 ro nomodeset xforcevesa
quiet splash vt.handoff=7
linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.38-12-generic root=/dev/sda2 ro nomodeset xforcevesa
single

Tried to install without a separate /var partition to see if that works.
Looks like others
have fixed the ureadahead issue this way, but it made no difference.

[Bug 880279] [NEW] SSH key passphrase prompt blocks compiz

2011-10-23 Thread l0b0
Public bug reported:

I'm not really sure where to file this or what to say, but it should be easily
reproducible (it's happened twice the last few days):
1) Log in.
2) Start `git pull` or some other process which will prompt the user for the
SSH key passphrase.
3) Lock the screen with Ctrl-Alt-L.
4) Leave the screen to turn off.
5) Type in the login password to dismiss the screensaver.

At this point, I would expect to see the desktop, but instead I see a black
screen. I tried a couple things in a virtual terminal to get it back:
$ killall gnome-screensaver # I thought this was blocking
$ killall firefox # The Flash plugin has been acting up more than usual.
$ killall compiz

The last command finally resulted in seeing a desktop again. The *only*
running thing was a pop-up window asking for the password for the SSH
key, because of a `git pull` command running in a GNOME Terminal.

[Bug 131885] Re: Backlight no longer under my control on battery

2011-02-07 Thread l0b0
This has been reproducible on both my EEE PC 900 and 1005 all the way until
10.10. To recap, with the default screen settings, I get the following behavior:
1. Adjust the backlight to the lowest setting.
2. Read on the screen for a bit (maybe a minute) without moving the pointer or
typing.
3. Notice a small increase in lighting level without any user input.
4. At this point, upon moving the pointer or typing the backlight goes back to
100%.

Points 3 and 4 should not happen. If GNOME is set to reduce the
backlight when idle, it should obviously not *increase* it. Also, the
backlight should always return to the last manual setting when not idle.

Yes, after setting LC_ALL and the Terminal encoding it sorta works - For
example, Norwegian "ø" is displayed as \303, and if I try to type "å" on

late anyway; my other machines don't have this problem, and I won't be

2010-08-04 Thread l0b0
Also, contrary to http://eyegene.ophthy.med.umich.edu/unicode/, none of the LC_
variables are changed after setting the language:
$ export LANG=en_US.UTF-8
$ locale
LANG=en_US.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE="C"
LC_NUMERIC="C"
LC_TIME="C"
LC_COLLATE="C"
LC_MONETARY="C"
LC_MESSAGES="C"
LC_PAPER="C"
LC_NAME="C"
LC_ADDRESS="C"
LC_TELEPHONE="C"
LC_MEASUREMENT="C"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="C"
LC_ALL=C

I get the same result on virtual terminal 1.

$ cat /var/lib/locales/supported.d/local
en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8

$ cat /etc/default/locale
LANG="en_US.UTF-8"

Should /etc/default/locale contain "LC_ALL=en_US.utf8" as mentioned in
bug #179150 comment #19?

Running through
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -plow console-setup
with the default settings didn't change anything.

I have not yet tried to reinstall anything; that hopefully won't be
necessary.

PS: I also tried logging out and restarting several times between
miscellaneous steps above.

[Bug 612553] [NEW] Unicode input mangled

2010-08-02 Thread l0b0
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

Recently, Unicode support seems to have been mangled in gnome-terminal.
The default encoding was set to "Unicode (UTF-8)" before, but now it is
set to this weird "ANSIX3.4-1968 (Current locale)". If I manually change
it to Unicode, cat and grep will *display* Unicode, but I can't input
for example "é" with my keyboard layout (USA Dvorak International). The
Terminal window just blinks. Copying and pasting text with the mouse or
keyboard produces weird results - For example, pasting "Díaz" results in
just "Dz" in the shell, and "Bâtiment" results in "Btiment". Shell
applications are also having trouble parsing Unicode - `gnokii
--writephonebook --overwrite --memory-type ME --vcard < ~/contacts.vcf`
results in wrong characters written to the phone.

I can't remove ANSIX3.4-1968 in the "Add or Remove Terminal Encodings"
interface.

I am able to input and copy Unicode characters in other GNOME and non-
GNOME applications, such as the keyboard preferences "Type to test
settings" field, Firefox, and jEdit.

$ export | grep -i lang
declare -x GDM_LANG="en_US.UTF-8"
declare -x LANG="en_US.UTF-8"

How can I set the correct default encoding for GNOME Terminal?

[Bug 596567] [NEW] Doesn't cache keys after `ssh -X`

2010-06-20 Thread l0b0
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: seahorse

I've got identical id_rsa and id_rsa.pub files on two computers (both
were restarted after installing the certificate). When trying to do
something that requires the key on the machine I'm sitting at, I get a
pop-up which asks for the password and caches the key afterwards. Then I
try to do the same on the other machine, after `ssh -X`, but it keeps
asking for the passphrase, and there's no pop-up. Example session:

laptop:~/foo$ git pull
[window pops up, I fill in the passphrase and click OK]
[git pull output]
laptop:~/foo$ cd ~/bar
laptop:~/bar$ git pull
[git pull output]
laptop:~/foo$ ssh -X desktop
desktop:~$ cd foo
desktop:~/foo$ git pull
Enter passphrase for key '/home/jdoe/.ssh/id_rsa':
desktop:~/foo$ cd ~/bar
desktop:~/bar$ git pull
Enter passphrase for key '/home/jdoe/.ssh/id_rsa':

The first time I do `git pull` on desktop, it should pop up a dialog to
request the passphrase, and when I do the last `git pull` it shouldn't
ask for the passphrase at all.

[Bug 562133] Re: Selection buffer cleared when editing file name

2010-04-14 Thread l0b0
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 465284 ***

I'm fairly sure the duplicate status is wrong. This bug deals with
simply selecting the text (without pressing any keyboard shortcuts).
Could be the same /cause/, of course, but the symptoms are different.

[Bug 562133] [NEW] Selection buffer cleared when editing file name

2010-04-13 Thread l0b0
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Pressing F2 when a single file is focused results in the selection
buffer being cleared, and not filled with the selected file name as
expected. If the selection is changed, the selection buffer still stays
empty. This makes it necessary to use Ctrl-C to copy and paste file
names from Nautilus to other applications.

I don't know where this (possibly related) bug belongs: When hovering over

[Bug 435928] Re: Password works in virtual terminal but not in Gnome screensaver

I checked for this solution around the web, and it looks like the

$ ls -la /sbin/unix_chkpwd

$ stat -c %a /sbin/unix_chkpwd

still this bug is not completely reproducible.

[Bug 435928] Re: Password works in virtual terminal but not in Gnome screensaver

2009-11-23 Thread l0b0
A workaround is to kill gnome-screensaver, but it's not restarted
automatically, so screen locking (Ctrl+Alt+L) doesn't work anymore.

Is there some trick to see which password is actually sent to the
underlying code? I suspect the problem can be with some sort of garbling
because of the keyboard layout (USA Dvorak International), or somehow an
empty password being sent.

[Bug 485740] [NEW] "Log out" shortcut should focus the logout window

2009-11-20 Thread l0b0
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

The "Log out" keyboard shortcut is assigned to Ctrl+Alt+Del. When I
press this combination, the "Shut Down the Computer" opens, but is not
focused*. It should be focused, so it can be navigated with a keyboard
without using Alt+Tab or the mouse first.

* If you press Ctrl+Alt+Delete, focus the "Shut Down the Computer"

application in the meantime, it will be focused.

[Bug 485734] [NEW] Activating "Log out" keyboard shortcut doesn't list "Log out" as an option

2009-11-20 Thread l0b0
Public bug reported:

In keyboard shortcuts, "Log out" is assigned to Ctrl+Alt+Delete. When I press
this combination, I get the choices "Shut Down", "Restart", "Suspend" and
"Hibernate" - "Log out" is not listed, as it should be.

PS: This is probably assigned to the wrong package - I couldn't find the

was obviously relevant.

[Bug 435928] [NEW] Password works in virtual terminal but not in Gnome screensaver

2009-09-24 Thread l0b0
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

I've got an EEE PC running Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04:
$ uname -a
Linux hostname 2.6.28-15-generic #49-Ubuntu SMP tue Aug 18 18:40:08 UTC 2009
i686 GNU/Linux
$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 9.04
Release: 9.04
$ apt-cache policy gnome-screensaver
[...]
Installed: 2.24.0-0ubuntu6

After leaving it for a long time (probably 24+ hours) locked (using
Ctrl-Alt-L), I'm unable to login with my regular password in Gnome. I've
verified that I'm using the right input mode (US Dvorak) by clicking
"Leave Message" and typing the password there. I've also changed the
input mode to my second option, Norwegian, and typed the password (it's
all a-zA-Z0-9 characters). I also verified that I'm able to log in in
the first virtual terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F1) with the same password.

This problem has not occurred before.

I'll postpone rebooting in case you know anything else I could try to
fix this.

[Bug 93847] Re: Excessive CPU usage by Gnome System Monitor

2007-10-31 Thread l0b0
Using 6-17% on my Core 2 Duo, which is quite extreme. Even Windows'
equivalent uses max. 1-3% or so.

[Bug 158949] Windows and panel objects are not moved the same way

2007-10-30 Thread l0b0
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Background: I've got a 1-line, 4-column panel setup, running compiz, on
Gutsy.

How to reproduce:
- Open a new window.
- Move the window so that part of it is outside the right edge of the desktop.
- right-click the window handle or panel object (still in workspace 1), and
click "Move to Workspace Right".

Now, the window is moved one workspace right, but the panel object (that
is, the thing at the bottom of the screen) is moved /two/ panels to the
right.

I'll test this without compiz later.

[Bug 156195] No color prompt in color capable terminal

2007-10-23 Thread l0b0
Public bug reported:

The default .bashrc doesn't enable the color prompt, even though `ls
--color=yes` shows colors. The following code is in the default .bashrc:
case "$TERM" in
xterm-color)
PS1='${debian_chroot:+($debian_chroot)}\[\033[01;[EMAIL
PROTECTED]:\[\033[01;34m\]\w\[\033[00m\]\$ '
;;
*)
PS1='${debian_chroot:+($debian_chroot)[EMAIL PROTECTED]:\w\$ '
;;
esac

I propose to change this to the following:
if [ $COLORTERM -o "$TERM" == 'xterm-color' ]; then
PS1='${debian_chroot:+($debian_chroot)}\[\033[01;[EMAIL
PROTECTED]:\[\033[01;34m\]\w\[\033[00m\]\$ '
else
PS1='${debian_chroot:+($debian_chroot)[EMAIL PROTECTED]:\w\$ '
fi

[Bug 152936] Re: Menu item for Evolution stays after uninstall

2007-10-16 Thread l0b0
Basilio: I tried again today, and uninstalled evolution-common without
any dependency warnings. Must've done something wrong.

Sebastien: Could you please include the ID / link to the other bug? I
couldn't find a bug like this when submitting.
