[Bug 1767542] Re: Turning off WiFi enables Airplane mode

2022-02-23 Thread Nico Stöckigt
This bug has quite a big impact but seems to be easy to fix. By this
means 4 years is a looong time. 20.04 LTS, 21.04, 21.10 still have this
issue - will 22.04 too?

Seriously, when will this be fixed?

Issue persists on 20.04 on the same Lenovo L480/490/14 Series.
Turning Wifi off still turns airplane mode on.

[Bug 1850001] Re: nautilus hangs on file delete

2020-02-16 Thread Nico Rikken
I too have this issue. I just upgraded from 18.04 LTS to 19.10 and
Nautilus starts fine, finishes the check, but I cannot initiate any file
commands like copy, move or delete. Nautilus doesn't respond and GNOME
serves the pop-up to kill Nautilus. Pressing the 'waiting' option
repeatedly doesn't solve it.

Running it from the commandline, I see some widget errors when trying to
execute a command:

$ nautilus

It seems this bug has been reported upstream too, but is ignored as the
version is too old https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/issues/1218

I cannot find an easy answer in the logs that points to a specific problem.

I can successfully do the file operations from the command line using
mv, cp and rm, so it is no permission issue.

I'm now in the process of installing Nautilus from Flathub gnome-
nightly, hopefully that will give me back a working system. Because even
though I did a nice upgrade using `sudo do-release-upgrade` it feels
like I have a broken system now.

Is there a way I can get more debugging from Nautilus?

[Bug 1822754] Re: Chrome and other programs not resizing on HiDPI and Non-Hidpi setup

2019-04-05 Thread Nico Jakob
** Description changed:

To try the new support for EGLStreams and Wayland I have directly tried some
programs to see how this performs. Unfortunately there are multiple problems:
Chrome does not use GPU hardware acceleration anymore (I get huge CPU spikes
while scrolling on normal pages).
- Also the automatic resizing when a program is moved from one display to
another only works with system applications such as settings, terminal etc. The
programs then are still scaled 2x on the Non-HIDPI screen.
+ Also the automatic resizing when a program is moved from one display to
another only works with system applications such as settings, terminal etc. The
other programs are scaled 2x on the Non-HIDPI screen.
I am running the latest NVIDIA Drivers with 418.56.
Is there a fix for this behaviour?

2019-04-05 Thread Nico Jakob
Ok thank you and sorry for the late reply I caught a cold over the last
days:

This is after installing the mutter builds:
➜ dpkg -l | grep 'mutter'
ii gir1.2-mutter-4:amd64 3.32.0-1
amd64GObject introspection data for Mutter
ii libmutter-4-0:amd643.32.0-1
amd64window manager library from the Mutter window manager
ii libmutter-4-0-dbgsym:amd64 3.32.0-1
amd64debug symbols for libmutter-4-0
ii libmutter-4-dev:amd64 3.32.0-1
amd64Development files for the Mutter window manager
ii mutter 3.32.0-1
amd64lightweight GTK+ window manager
ii mutter-common 3.32.0-1
all shared files for the Mutter window manager
ii mutter-dbgsym 3.32.0-1
amd64debug symbols for mutter

Unfortunately Chrome,Firefox and other programs seem to run only
software accelerated and do not adjust their scaling for example if
moved from screen A (HiDPI) to screen B (low-DPI).

[Bug 1649728] [NEW] package udev 204-5ubuntu20.20 failed to install/upgrade: pre-dependency problem - not installing udev

2016-12-13 Thread Nico van der Horn
Public bug reported:

Upgrading Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS using do-release-upgrade.
Normal update/upgrade without problems/stable within release 12, including
reboot.

During the upgrade I noticed "xenial" in the path-names, assuming the
target would be 16.04 LTS.

But after 15min I noticed the following:

-
Errors were encountered while processing:
 /var/cache/apt/archives/lvm2_2.02.133-1ubuntu10_amd64.deb
 /var/cache/apt/archives/udev_229-4ubuntu12_amd64.deb
Error in function:

Original exception was:
SystemError: E:Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
-

Given the URL in the text, I landed here.

At the next choice, I selected to continue, effectively ignoring more
problems with udev ?

I tried to recover by "apt-get -f install", later "apt full-upgrade" and it
looked ok.
Unfortunately after reboot the server responded only to ping, as far as I could
see nothing else.

I am working remotely with the server of my client, they start working
at 08:00 CET.

Going for a short sleep now, as I'm afraid having to travel to the
client and continue on-site.

If you can provide me with hits, I would apreciate that a lot.

Thanks in advance,

2015-07-23 Thread Nico
I have just installed 15.04 and experienced the same issue that Ilan
reported. Upon reading this thread, I upgraded Nautilus to the proposed
version (1:3.14.2-0ubuntu9.1), and can confirm that the problem is gone.

So far, no other problems detected.

Thanks for the support.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1243806 ***

Same problem here on fresh install of Ubuntu 14.04 x64.
How can problems like this happen? There have been thousands of table-like
browsers with multiple columns for decades. Why the need for changing
everything in every new release??? Functionality changes, location of buttons,
or options appear and disappear like random in each release! It's so annoying!!!

[Bug 1258966] [NEW] Inconsistent behavior when quitting rhythmbox

2013-12-08 Thread Nico T
Public bug reported:

For a user there are three ways I know for quitting an application :
- File->quit
- Alt+F4
- Click on the cross of the window
- Right click on the icon in the dash and select quit

According to these 4 methods there are two cases to consider : either a
music is played or not.

While not playing : the application is always unloaded from the memory
whichever the way used (that is good)

While playing : only the quit option in the file menu really unload the
application. The three others options rather hide the main windows (background
play) so that :
- it is impossible to remove the application from the memory without opening a
new window;
- it is difficult to predict what will be the behavior of closing the window or
using the dash quit option.

[Bug 1254376] [NEW] Brightness settings changes have no effect.

2013-11-23 Thread Nico T
Public bug reported:

On my laptop (acer aspire one V5-131) which uses Ubuntu 13.04, the
change of the brightness settings have no effect on the brightness in
the settings application.

When I press the shortcut for changing the brightness (Fn+Left &
Fn+Right), the notification of the new brightness level is correctly
displayed but again it has no effect on the brightness of the screen
(and it neither update the level in the settings application).

Please, see in the attached file (Brightness.txt) what I do for
changing the brightness on my computer from the console.

I don't know anything about the settings software stack but since it
works from the console I don't think it is a driver problem but rather a
software problem somewhere or maybe a missing symlink. Though the
keyboard shortcut are not working properly, the problem could also be
below gnome-control-center.

Please contact me for any question or if I can be of any help for the
correction.

[Bug 1248888] Re: Folder creation naming is canceled when name contains underscore with french bepo keyboard layout

2013-11-07 Thread Nico T
I think this key is not binded to anything but just to make sure I
launched the keyboard tool.

It seems binded to nothing but in english layout, pressing the key open
the «command menu» (such as the left alt key does). But in bépo layout,
it does nothing.

So, in the tab «shortcut» I tryed to temporary set the AltGr key to some
unused shortcut functionality :

- When the qwerty layout is selected the key is recognize as a "Alt R" key;
- When the bépo layout is selected the key is recognize as a "Level 3 shift"
key.

Please see the uploaded screenshot

I don't know what is this kind of key "Level 3 shift".

Bépo layout is the equivalent of the dvorak layout (but applied to french).
On a bépo keyboard layout, this AltGr key is useful for dealing with foreign
language and input char like ñ ã ú ś ¿ ¡ ù ï © ß ...

Remark, whenever I try to bind this "Level 3 shift" to a shortcut, the
shortcut never works when the key is pressed.

[Bug 1248888] [NEW] Folder creation naming is canceled when name contains underscore with french bepo keyboard layout

2013-11-07 Thread Nico T
Public bug reported:

Step to reproduce :
- select the french bepo keyboard in the list of layouts
- open nautilus and create a folder
- when it asks a name for the folder, try to give a name containing an
underscore (AltGr+space on the bépo layout)
- as soon as you press the AltGr key the focus is lost and the name of the
folder stays «Untitled Folder»

Remarks :
- I am using a qwerty keyboard with the french bépo layout
- There is no problem for entering underscore when I am renaming the previously
created «Untitled Folder»

[Bug 1075923] Re: nautilus hangs copying large directories from a samba share

2012-12-24 Thread Nico Timeo
It also affects me.
When I try to copy files from QNAP NAS share, samba randomly hangs without any
notice.
Using a clean install of Ubuntu 12.10 (32 bit).
This problem was not present in Ubuntu 12.04.

[Bug 780117] Re: Brasero finishes without error but unusable media [on-the-fly mode] (Ubuntu 11.04 ->12.04)

2012-11-20 Thread Nico Zanferrari
Hello, I confirm that the patch works fine on Precise. So,

+1 for going to release on Precise

Technical details: a 32 bit Precise fresh live usb was confirmed to have
the bug with the default Brasero 3.4.1-0ubuntu1 and a DVD RW. After
enabling the proposed repository and the update to 3.4.1-0ubuntu1.1, the
problem is solved (even without a reboot, on the same DVD, after
blanking it with the dvd+rw-format commands).

Many thanks to all,
Nico

[Bug 780117] Re: Brasero finishes without error but unusable media [on-the-fly mode] (Ubuntu 11.04 ->12.04)

2012-10-26 Thread Nico Zanferrari
I do confirm that this proposed patch resolves this nasty bug on
quantal. So, from my point of view, this is a big THANK YOU to all the
upstream developers and the smart Ubuntu guys!!!

Some notes (I always use a fresh standard live 32 bit USB key with the
same DVD-RW):

- the patch is still not "proposed" on 11.10 and 12.04 (see
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/brasero/), so I cannot rightly test it
there
- the "unreadable coasters" produced from other Ubuntu versions are seen as
blank disk from standard brasero 12.10, and can be easily blanked with it. This
is different from old versions of brasero that does not recognise it at all as
a DVD medium.
- the bug (don't ask me why) is quite different on 12.10. Here sometimes you
can have a readable DVD, but never on the first recording! It seems that it's
somehow and sometimes able to record a second recording session on what it
thinks it's a blank disk.

+1 for going to stable on quantal!

[Bug 780117] Re: Brasero finishes without error but unusable media [on-the-fly mode] (Ubuntu 11.04 ->12.04)

2012-05-05 Thread Nico Zanferrari
Hi Ayan, thank you for the support and dedication - I really appreciate
it. I've made a couple of tests, on a fresh 12.04 standard 64 bit
installation.

- a default data burnt DVD is still unreadable. As already pointed out, it is
not even anymore possible to change (nor see) the on-the-fly option
- after applying your PPA, there is no problem at all

So, from my point of view, go on urgently with the patch!

Note: for testing, use a DVD-RW. And resurrect it with:

sudo dvd+rw-format -force /dev/cdrw
sudo dvd+rw-format -lead-out /dev/cdrw

Thank you again,
Nico

YES, I do confirm both solutions:

- the bring-again-to-life commands for RW disks of Tom Jaeger (thjaeger)
on

- the libisofs low priority fix of Cyrus Lien (cyruslien)

I've tested both on an fresh USB Live of Ubuntu 11.10.

Do you think this should be applied as a fix?

Hi Ayan,

thank you for your support!

I've written to you in order to let you know of other tests I've done
following some hints from Luis Medinas . I'm
writing the results down here - I hope they're useful.

Best regards, and let me know if I can help you somehow,
Nico

**

On my updated Ubuntu 11.10 32 bit:

1) In dconf-editor I've changed:

apps - brasero -plugin

growisofs priority to 50 (before it was 0)
wodim priority to -50 (before it was 0)

-->> same problem of unreadable DVD without any error from the program.

2) setting

growisofs priority to -50
wodim priority to 50

gives a visual error around 60% of the process : stderr: wodim: Cannot
fixate disk.

> Even with growisofs there's some setup that might solve your problem...
> check on dconf-editor -> org -> gnome ->brasero -> config -> dao_flag
>
> also you have other options here that might help you solve the problem
>

3) I've tried to set all the flags there:

dao-flag + immed-flag + raw-flag

-->> same problem of unreadable DVD without any error from the program.

> I suggest you to try cdrecord not wodim (cdrkit) which comes installed
> by default on Ubuntu.

4) This is not so clear to me... I had a look in the Software Center
but I cannot find anything ready to install.
Googling around I've found that in a PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ferramroberto/cdrtools
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install cdrecord cdda2wav mkisofs
+ reboot

The installed cdrecord is now 3.0.0. I cannot find any cdrecord entry
in dconf-editor.
I tried with the normal settings, but:

-->> same problem of unreadable DVD without any error from the program.

[Bug 409409] Re: nautilus hangs on preview of SVG with embedded TIF

2010-06-11 Thread nico
I can confirm this bug is also present on Fedora FC12, kernel
2.6.32.12-115.fc12.i686.PAE , libtiff-3.9.2-3, librsvg2-2.26.0-3

PS: The workaround is just silly, I do want file previews, but I also want to
be able to navigate folders with .svg files in them.
Unless there is some way to specifically avoid preview of svg files, that is

[Bug 450546] Re: usb flash drive fails to automount

2009-11-11 Thread Nico Isenbeck
Hi Martin,

You'll find the output of the above mentioned command attached.

Maybe you need some more information about my drives?
sda1: ext3 /
sda5: encrypted swap
sdb1: external usb hard disk (truecrypt device/volume) for backups. Without
beeing mounted with truecrypt there are no filesystem or partitions visible.
Could this be a problem?
sdc1: usb flash drive with automount problems

I also recognized that the truecrypt usb drive starts up sometimes
without accessing it. With Ubuntu 8.10 the drive sleeped the whole day
and only waked up when my backup cronjob started. Is it possible that
devkit tries to mount this usb drive without success because there seems
to be no filesystem on it? After i typed in your last command the drive
also started up.

[Bug 450546] Re: usb flash drive fails to mount

2009-11-10 Thread Nico Isenbeck
I did the following:

n...@nico-pc ~ % gvfs-mount -oi
Monitoring events. Press Ctrl+C to quit.

-> plug in the usb flash drive, plug out

^C
130 n...@nico-pc ~ % sudo gvfs-mount -oi
Monitoring events. Press Ctrl+C to quit.

-> plug in the usb flash drive, plug out

^C
130 n...@nico-pc ~ % sudo stop hal
hal stop/waiting
130 n...@nico-pc ~ % sudo gvfs-mount -oi
Monitoring events. Press Ctrl+C to quit.

-> plug in the usb flash drive, plug out
^C

As you can see, there was absolutely no output and the device was not mounted!
After that i tried to mount it manually with "devkit-disks --mount /dev/sdc1"
and the output was:

Monitoring events. Press Ctrl+C to quit.
Mount added: 'USB Disk'
  Mount(0): USB Disk -> file:///media/USB%20Disk
Type: GUnixMount
themed icons: [drive-harddisk] [drive]
can_unmount=1
can_eject=0
is_shadowed=0

^C

After mounting it manually the flash drive was mounted automatically on
next connect with the same output of "gvfs-mount -oi"

I attached the output of dmesg while connecting the flash drive, lspci
and lsusb.

[Bug 278261] Re: two xscreens -> gnome panel crashes

2009-01-28 Thread Nico-S
Hi,

I resolved the problem on my computer. It was an interaction with
metacity, linked to the /apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager key.
If it is true then some visuals effects are done without compiz, but it
has to be set to false to remove my problems.

The question is : where is the bug ? In Metacity/compiz or in other used
libs ?

Thanks to all,
Nicolas.

Hi,

First of all, thanks to all ubunutu developers and debuggers for their
wonderfull work.

I have the same problem, and I will try to give some other information.
First, notice that I don't use Compiz. Next, on my laptop, this problem
can, sometimes, be by-passed. It is sometimes sufficient to launch an
application from the first desktop, to enable to launch another app from
the second one. After what there is no more freeze of the gnome-panel,
but the CPU is still used with 100% by gnome-panel (more precisely, each
core is used with 100% by each of the two gnome panels).

I will try to install the debug tools described previously.

Thanks,
Nicolas.

Thanks

[Bug 285323] Re: Losing keyboard and mouse control when changing screen brightness with fn + arrow under intrepid

2008-11-24 Thread Nico
With 2.6.27-10 from -proposed the keyboard control for backlight works
with 7 levels of dimming up and down.

However, the brightness OSD is still not showing when using the keyboard
shortcut. It is only showing briefly when I plug-unplug the power cord
and g-p-m updates the brightness level automatically.

In fact -10 did not bring visible improvements, or regression, for me
compared to -8.

ah, I have to correct a comment that will arrive here later (sent by

It happens to the last message message deleted, yes, but only when it
was the last message present in the directory,

Sorry about that, I went too quickly...

[Bug 230998] Re: evolution leaves deleted messages strike through

2008-05-30 Thread Nico
I second the bug.

In a folder's messages list, delete 1 or more messages, the last one is
shown as marked deleted (strikethrough) but does not disappear from the
view.

Going to another folder and coming back makes the view proper.

I'm using a Dovecot IMAP server over SSL.

Hardy with security, updates and backports, up-to-date.

This behaviour started with the latest package coming from -updates.

2007-09-14 Thread Nico
OK, my mistake.

It is not a control center issue, you are right. Google became my
friend, but after I jumped the gun, sorry about that.

The knob is not really part of the keyboard, it is another event device.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=203770

I guess that it will be difficult to expect a trivial fix.

[Bug 138834] Bluetooth (OBEX Push) should remove devices not in range

2007-09-11 Thread Nico Laum
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus-sendto

The list of devices (Send to) for Bluetooth (OBEX Push) does not show
the current status of devices in range but old devices too. This is very
annoying if there are two devices with the same name and different BT
Addresses because you don't know which one to choose (only the name is
displayed and even if bt address would be displayed, nobody would know
which one is the right).

This list should be updated with a bluetooth inquiry and only show bt
devices which are available...
