[Bug 2061115] [NEW] Missing Ubuntu logo when logging into Noble 12th April Build

2024-04-12 Thread Oliver Smith
Public bug reported:

When booting Ubuntu the logo is present in both Mantic and Noble on the
login screen, however when you click the account to open the password
entry form the logo disappears on Noble.

2023-03-16 Thread Oliver Smith
Public bug reported:

When switching between like and dark modes, the dock icons glitch their
positioning every 4th or so time dark/light is switched. See the video
attached for repeated toggles - 75% behaves as expected, 25% the glitch
appears. This does not happen in current releases of Ubuntu Desktop.

[Bug 2003844] [NEW] Screensharing from my browser (Firefox snap) freezes the display requiring a hard reboot

2023-01-25 Thread Oliver Smith
Public bug reported:

In the firefox snap (although I'm not convinced it is specific to the
firefox snap) when in a google meets session, I choose to share either
my screen or a specific browser tab.

In ~40% of instances this results in a complete visual freeze of my
system with no interactivity.

Audio / Microphone / Webcam /keyboard are still functional during this
time. But I need to hard restart to be able to interact with my system
again.

This happens more often the longer my system has been running and is
pretty much guaranteed to happen once a day if I am presenting multiple
times.

For reference I have two monitors: A UHD Monitor 1440p (60HZ) and a high
refresh (144HZ) 1080p Monitor, both have scaling set to 100%. It does
not seem to matter which screen I'm presenting to the other.

I have attached the journalctl of my previous boot.

[Bug 1975383] [NEW] Please enable vmci support

2022-05-21 Thread Oliver Kurth
Public bug reported:

zmq supports vsock for communication between virtual machines and hosts.
For example, to listen on a vsock port you can specify vmci://*: for
the socket. This feature is enabled with the option '--with-vmci' for

[Bug 1969959] Re: [nouveau][amdgpu] Weird colors after startup (Ubuntu 22.04)

2022-04-28 Thread Oliver Tacke
Hi all!

I've installed Ubuntu 22.04 for real and using the proprietary driver in
fact solves the screen issue.

However, in my opinion, someone who wants to try Ubuntu from a live
stick should not need to worry about such things (e. g. also try using
safe graphics mode). That person is likely to not know much about Ubuntu
or maybe even about Linux. If the very first impression is such a
problem, then I'd probably look for a different distribution quickly or
stick with whatever OS I was using.

@Daniel

I'll gladly do that, but I won't get my hands on that computer before
Thursday and I'd need to either figure out how to create a persistent

[Bug 1947627] [NEW] Sound > Output Device selection reverts to default after resuming from sleepng from

2021-10-18 Thread Oliver Smith
Public bug reported:

My Dell XPS 13 is connected to a Lenovo Thinkpad docking station.

By default the audio output is selected as the audio out from the
docking station.

I manually select the output device to be the XPS speakers.

After going into standby/suspend mode the audio output reverts to the
docking station audio out.

Expected behaviour: The selected audio output device settings would be
persistent across standby/suspend.

Potentially this may be expected to be persistent across power off/on or
disconnect/reconnect as other settings (eg number of displays, order and
orientation) are maintained.

[Bug 1771880] Re: Seahorse unable to import pkcs12 certificates

2020-04-05 Thread Oliver
The keys I was trying to import into Seahorse were located in an
encrypted container (mounted, obviously). As I cannot influence (or
haven't learned how to influence) the standard file modes when mounting
said container, they all had 0700 as file mode, including the .pub files
I had generated based on that AskUbuntu answer.

Once I copied them over to ~/.ssh they popped up immediately in
Seahorse. So it's definitely not the file format that is/was the issue
here.

Either it's the file mode, a certain expectation of what it ought to be
or it's the fact that the keys I was trying to import weren't in ~/.ssh;
or something else altogether?! ...

[Bug 1771880] Re: Seahorse unable to import pkcs12 certificates

2020-04-05 Thread Oliver
Fascinating, I am seeing this exact same issue with SSH keys. When using
ssh-add these keys will load into the agent without a problem, but I
cannot import them into Seahorse. The files have been generated with
OpenSSH, but their file names aren't following the standard id_
and id_.pub pattern ...

I also followed the advice from that AskUbuntu answer to generate
accompanying .pub files, but that didn't work either.

Seahorse also outright refused to import the id_ed25519, whereas the
id_rsa worked previously. This seems at least inconsistent.

Package versions:

gnome-keyring 3.28.0.2-1ubuntu1.18.04.1
seahorse 3.20.0-5

[Bug 1827428] Re: Mouse cursor left frozen copy of itself

2020-02-03 Thread Oliver
I'm also having this issue on 19.04. Only happens when i'm using 2
screens. the cursor is a duplicate of the real one, ie it hanges to the
text select cursor shape when i'm highlighting text, and it changes to
the hand-pointer when hovering over a hyperlink.

the duplicate goes away if i disconnect and reconnect one monitor.

I should note I have updated my graphics drivers using this ppa:
ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers - before i did this, there was an unusable
stuttering mess of many cursors, again, only present when using 2
displays.

the requirement for policykit (and dropping of gksu/gksudo) came with
the switch to gnome upstream, its a hard requirement for the desktop
nowadays.

while the default here might be wrong (and should be reviewed by someone

added a gnome-software task and will close the snapd one ...

[Bug 1824699] Re: gnome-calendar pango critical

2019-04-18 Thread Oliver Ritter
I tried to add my hometown Dorsten to weather inside calendar again.
When i enter Dorsten (this is in germany), the search does not find or offer my
city. When i press enter, this setting is set. I checked in dconf editor,
there was the default value

org.gnome.calendar weather-settings (true, false, '', nothing)

And now there is the value

org.gnome.calendar weather-settings (true, false, 'Dorsten', nothing)

So calendar weather accepted my town Dorsten and now crashes after that.

When i enter for example Berlin, the search offers this city and
calendar is fine. The problem is when cities are entered, that are not
found in search

[Bug 1824699] Re: gnome-calendar pango critical

2019-04-16 Thread Oliver Ritter
I found a solution:
i startet dconf editor and resetted everything in
org/gnome/calendar/weather-settings.

Now calendar is starting again. There was something with this weather
plugin.

[Bug 1799913] Re: Unhandled lockdown error (-2) - iphone ios 12

2019-02-26 Thread Oliver Kamer
I have the same issue, but I just double checked, it works on my
machine with bionic, the problem only arises on my cosmic machine.

iPad version: 12.1.4
works with 18.04.01 LTS
doesn't work on 18.10

If anyone has any ideas for me to try, please let me know, I'm happy to
try.

[Bug 1713313] Re: Unable to launch pkexec'ed applications on Wayland session

2018-08-09 Thread Oliver Grawert
> Now that Ubuntu has given up on Wayland by default

Ubuntu has not given up on Wayland by default but delayed it by one more
LTS (particulary because of bugs like this one).

Wayland by default is still the plan for the next LTS (and the interim
releases between 18.04 and 20.04). The incentive for transitioning the
apps has not dropped but it was clear that it could not be finished by
18.04.

[Bug 1758109] [NEW] Gnome-Shell Memory Leak

2018-03-22 Thread Oliver L.
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I searched the bugs but couldn't find anything referring to a memory
leak so I figured I open a new one and you just reassign it.

I’m referring to this article here: https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2018/03
/gnome-shell-has-a-memory-leak-and-it-might-not-be-fixed-for-
ubuntu-18-04-lts

And the question I asked yesterday here:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/667051

So, the main problem is that the gnome-shell has this memory leak and
together with Hyper-V dynamic memory it can eat up all the host’s (!)
memory.

I have seen this happen in 17.04 and 17.10. Both x64.

Let me know if you need anything and I will take care of it.

KR,

G.

please note that this rule will also likely be used inside the initrd to
set up the console for encyption key input and there will be no systemd
around ... you probably want to rather handle it conditionally so it is
still available when creating an initrd ...

[Bug 1021375] Re: Nautilus says the USB stick is read only when it is not

2017-03-07 Thread Oliver Gad Larsen
I had the exact same problem as described but I am using Arch Linux. I made a
simple uninstall with pacman -Rcsn. I know this isn't the same command for
ubuntu but just use apt-get autoremove and make sure to add the option that
also removes all configuration files. Some times some files are still there. In
my case it was in my home folder under .config/nautilus and .local/nautilus
both for my user and root. To be sure you have deleted everything I suggest
using the command:
"find|grep nautilus" under both root and your home to make sure all files are
deleted. After that I installed nautilus again. Maybe make a full restart
before but I didn't have to. I use Gnome 3 on Arch Linux so hope this maybe
apply to you as my discovery makes me think that it might be a fault with
configuration files.

[Bug 1662281] Re: Firefox shows post-crash page after reboot or logoff

2017-02-16 Thread Oliver-henshaw
This is probably due to gnome-session (mis-)behaviour:

My test client gets a "Die" message from the xsm server and within a few
tens of milliseconds receives an ICE io error (as the server has quit or
broken the connection). According to
https://www.x.org/releases/X11R7.7/doc/libSM/SMlib.html#Sending_a_Die_Message
the server should wait for clients to close the connection.

[Bug 1622880] Re: nautilus crashes on Ubuntu 16.10

2016-10-11 Thread Oliver Smith
This happened for me after an update from Ubuntu Gnome 16.04.

I fixed it by:

* Purging nautilus with apt-get
* Removing ~/.config/nautilus

I suspect the last step may fix it alone but I've not been able to
recreate the initial issue to verify.

[Bug 1081019] Re: Benchmark for disks always fails on 32 bit systems

2016-07-18 Thread Oliver Joos
I confirm that this bug is fixed in newer releases.
I tested gnome-disk-utility 3.18.3.1 on a Linux Mint MATE 18.0 32bit! and the
benchmark works now.

I checked the 32bit iso image on a 32-bit hardware and on a 64-bit
hardware: this bug is fixed on both. (although the latter is not a
recommended setup)

[Bug 1593604] [NEW] gvfs should ignore snap package mounts

2016-06-17 Thread Oliver Grawert
Public bug reported:

when removing a snap package gvfs shows a device in the unity panel for
a split second while the squashfs is unmounted during package removal.

ideally gvfs should ignore all snap package operations since the package
mounts should never be used directly by users.

running in one terminal:
sudo snap remove

while in another terminal gvfs-mount --monitor is running i get the
following output:

ogra@styx:~$ gvfs-mount --monitor
Monitoring events. Press Ctrl+C to quit.

Volume added: 'Datenträger 66 MB'
Volume changed: 'Datenträger'

hmm, this bug seems ot have been dragged away from the actual topic by

[Bug 1547033] [NEW] please allow /etc/mtab to be a pre-existing link on readonly filesystems

2016-02-18 Thread Oliver Grawert
Public bug reported:

booting a snappy system which comes with a readonly file system that
carries /etc/mtab as pre-created link in the readonly area of the fs
(pointing to /proc/mounts), we always get an error message on boot when
systemd-tmpfiles tries to re-create the mtab link.

systemd-tmpfiles should instead check if /etc/mtab is already there, is
a link and points to the desired target. in this case it should just
skip the creation attempt gracefully without error.

[Bug 1426307] Re: location is inaccurate

2015-09-29 Thread Oliver Grawert
@lucio i only was commenting on the screenshot, the only way to end up
without the "HERE" option there is if you flashed a community image
instead of the stable or rc-proposed one. this UI option is tied
directly to the existence of the HERE AGPS backend existing on disk, if
this is not there you are likely only using plain GPS for location
detection. (note that the HERE app is completely separate from this
issue)

[Bug 1426307] Re: location is inaccurate

2015-09-28 Thread Oliver Grawert
@lucio, are you sure you are using the official stable (or rc-proposed)
channel for your device ? note that the dialog (and the HERE backend) is
only available in the right channels (i.e. the ones that get shipped on
the devices with a paid license), it is not in the community builds
(i.e. the /ubuntu channels)

i see the option on both, MX4 and Aquaris 4.5 on rc-proposed

[Bug 1447110] [NEW] location service fills disk with logs, needs to ship logrotate config

2015-04-22 Thread Oliver Grawert
Public bug reported:

phablet@ubuntu-phablet:~$ ls -l /var/log/ubuntu-location-service/|wc -l
664
phablet@ubuntu-phablet:~$ sudo du -hcs /var/log/ubuntu-location-service/
22M /var/log/ubuntu-location-service/

seems location service never cleans up its logs, while they are small, the
sheer amount over time occupies a lot of diskspace ...
ubuntu-location-service needs to ship a config in /etc/logrotate.d to make
sure the log subdir gets regulary flushed.

[Bug 502642] Re: .ts files always get recognized as application/x-linguist and never as video/mp2t (mpeg transport stream)

2014-12-10 Thread Oliver Joos
I reported this bug and it was fixed in March 2010. If you see new problems
then please feel free to open a new bug report! Describe the exact situation:
does it fail with local ts-files? or only on network shares (samba)? Are the
files encrypted or playable with your videoplayer? Do you use Nautilus or
another file browser? Add version numbers of everything, ect...
And leave a comment here with a link to your new bug report to help affected
people follow you.

To solve it yourself try my final patch from comment #20.

I just checked my Linux Mint 17.1 which is based on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS:
its file browser Nemo (= Nautilus clone) does recognize my ts-files
correctly as MPEG-2 transport stream, locally and remote through NFS.
I have no samba network shares. My ts-files were recorded by my settop-
box and are not encrypted.

[Bug 1389021] [NEW] Does not detect hotplugged storage device (exfat)

2014-11-03 Thread Oliver S.

Disk /dev/sdb: 232.9 GiB, 250059350016 bytes, 488397168 sectors
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

/dev/sdb1 63 488392064 488392002 232.9G 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT

exfatfsck /dev/sdb1 finds no error

mount -t exfat works, it's just auto-mounting that doesn't.
'-t' is required though, not sure if that's normal:
mount: /dev/sdb1: more filesystems detected. This should not happen,
use -t type to explicitly specify the filesystem type or
use wipefs(8) to clean up the device.

[Bug 1387747] [NEW] No longer asks for passphrase, no access to private key

2014-10-30 Thread Oliver Klee
Public bug reported:

I'm using Thunderbird with Enigmail on Trusty in KDE. I've set
/usr/bin/gpg (i.e., GPG 1, not GPG 2) as GPG path in Enigmail. My GPG
key is stored on a YubiKey Neo.

This has worked fine until yesterday. Yesterday, after the following
update:

gnome-keyring:amd64 3.10.1-1ubuntu4 - 3.10.1-1ubuntu4.1

… Thunderbird/Enigmail no longer asks me for me passphrase when I open
an encrypted e-mail or when I try to sign an e-mail. Instead, I directly
see the error message no private key available.

A downgrade to 3.10.1-1ubuntu4 and a reboot solves the problem. Updating
again to 3.10.1-1ubuntu4.1 makes the problem appear again.

There also have been a kernel update and an update of libykpers. Those
do nott seem to have caused the problem: Downgrading them (or booting
the older kernel) does not solve the problem. Only the downgrade of
gnome-keyring solves it.

[Bug 1081019] Re: Benchmark for Harddisk fail

2014-07-22 Thread Oliver Joos
I also have this problem with 3.10.0-1ubuntu3 in Ubuntu 14.04 / Mint 17.

Like Darek in comment #17 I have an amd64 PC (AMD Athlon 64 X2) but use
a i386 kernel and libs.

If I benchmark a small partition at the beginning of a disk or SSD then
the read/write tests end succesfully, and the error occurs as soon as
the access time benchmark starts. Looks like it fails with big sector
numbers (2³²) with 32bit libs on a 64bit CPU.

[Bug 1165590] Re: Unable to adjust backlight brightness after upgrade to raring - Asus UX32VD

2014-05-25 Thread oliver
Been using 14.04 for a few days, maybe 2 weeks now, and initially it
worked fine.

After suspending for a day today however (no updates installed) gsd-
backlight-helper now targets acpi_video0 instead of intel_backlight
which results in not functinoal backlight. /usr/bin/intel_backlight
works as before, but I'd expect that gsd-backlight-helper would use some
smarts to pick a backlight or atleast allow it to be configurable?

Long story short, gsd-backlight-helper seems to not consistently pick the
correct backlight.
Or
acpi_video0 isn't linked to intel_backlight?

This on a macbook pro 13 retina (11,1)

[Bug 1320896] [NEW] cann't unlock screensaver

2014-05-19 Thread Oliver
Public bug reported:

When I lock the screen (strg-alt-l) or the sreensaver locked the screen
atomatically, I can't unlock the the screen by typing in the correct password.
The Screensaver reports 'password not correct'.
I can only lock in to the existing session by chosing 'change user' and doing
the lock in from there.
I'm using ubuntu 12.04 LTS.
The File shadow has the permissions witch are mentioned in BUG #34775. But the
file is not in /etc/shadow, that does not exist. It is directly in /etc.

[Bug 1299784] Re: Alt+F2 run dialog not available any more

2014-04-01 Thread Oliver Gerlich
Tried unity-control-center, gnome-control-center and gnome-control-
center.real. The last one doesn't even show a Keyboard item; the other
ones have the Keyboard item but in Keyboard - Shortcuts - System there
is no item for configuring the Run Dialog shortcut.

Btw. I noticed that /usr/bin/gnome-control-center checks the
$XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP env var; but interestingly it's always set to
Unity, no matter whether I start Gnome Flashback (Metacity), Gnome
Flashback (Compiz) or Unity. Is that intended?

[Bug 877214] Re: metacity doesn't detect hung apps like compiz does

2014-03-30 Thread Oliver Gerlich
Still occurs in Ubuntu 14.04 beta (with gnome-session-flashback, when
starting Metacity-based session).

Would it be possible to apply the metacity patch from the linked Gnome
bug report (https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=687938)?

[Bug 1299784] [NEW] Alt+F2 run dialog not available any more

2014-03-30 Thread Oliver Gerlich
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 14.04 beta with Gnome Flashback session with Metacity, the
Alt+F2 keyboard shortcut doesn't work anymore. Previously it could be
used to open a small Run dialog.

Also, in Ubuntu 12.04 this could be configured in System Settings -
Keyboard - Shortcuts - System - Den Befehl ausführen-Dialog
anzeigen (German for show the Execute Command dialog). This is no
longer possible; the System category doesn't show any such item any more
in 14.04.

I would expect that ideally the Alt-F2 shortcut works out of the box
when starting the Gnome Flashback (Metacity) session, or that it at
least can be enabled/configured manually.

This is with Ubuntu 14.04 beta (x86_64), in Virtualbox, with gnome-panel
1:3.8.0-1ubuntu10.

[Bug 1299836] [NEW] Alt+mouse move doesn't drag window any more

2014-03-30 Thread Oliver Gerlich
Public bug reported:

Under Ubuntu 14.04 beta, in Gnome Flashback Session with Metacity, the
Alt hotkey doesn't work anymore for moving windows. In Ubuntu 12.04
pressing Alt key and clicking into a window could be used to move the
window; this doesn't work anymore.

The shortcut key can be changed away from Alt to Super (Windows) key,
eg. using gnome-tweak-tool (Window - Window Action Key). Interestingly,
when configuring Super key, it actually works when pressing the Super
key; but when configuring the Alt key it doesn't work.

The key can also be changed directly in dconf-editor, under
org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences.mouse-button-modifier. This allows to
set other keys than Alt and Super; and eg. configuring Ctrl actually
makes the Control key usable as Window Action Key; but again when
configuring Alt the Alt key cannot be used for window movement.

This also affects the other actions available via the window action key
(window resizing, and opening window context menu).

This is with Ubuntu 14.04 beta (x86_64), in Virtualbox, with metacity
1:2.34.13-0ubuntu4.

[Bug 1299784] Re: Alt+F2 run dialog not available any more

2014-03-30 Thread Oliver Gerlich
Found the dconf setting which makes this available again
(org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings.panel-run-dialog). For some reason it
was set to ['disabled'] on my test system - no idea why. Setting it back
to its default value makes Alt+F2 show the Run dialog again.

So this bug report is now merely about making this available by default,
or making it configurable in GUI. Also, might be useful as reference for
others having the same problem :-)
