[Bug 690285] Re: Multiple brasero instances=stuck cdrom

2010-12-15 Thread tsg1zzn
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

When burning a CD using Brasero and trying to start another instance of
Brasero (to do cover design), both instances die (no brasero is running
  any more).

The result of this is that I am left with a half-written CD in the
drive, and it CANNOT BE EJECTED. I cannot kill brasero because it is not
running. The CD cannot be unmounted, because it is not mounted in the
first place. It cannot be ejected by pressing the button on my computer.
It cannot be ejected by right-clicking on the device in nautilus and
selecting eject. It cannot be ejected by opening a terminal and typing
eject -r. Even after running echo 0 /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/lock as
root it CANNOT BE EJECTED. Even after logging out and logging in again,
  it STILL CANNOT BE EJECTED.

Further more, when selecting system - shut down... and then RESTART
(last resort), the computer WOULD NOT RESTART. Instead I get logged out
to GDM. Selecting restart in GDM worked, but but this entire process
left me as an unhappy user.

The unability to eject CDs from Linux was a MAJOR NUISANCE TEN YEARS
AGO. It must be fixed soon.

(eject -r said eject: unable to eject, last error: Input/output error)

[Bug 690650] [NEW] Evince does not remember settings

2010-12-15 Thread tsg1zzn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

Evince does not remember my settings. There are two issues here:

1. My settings should be saved automatically. Currently I have to select
Edit - Save current settings as default to save my settings. This is
ridiculous. When I select a particular setting, DO NOT SET IT BACK. When
I setup a program a particular way, I do that because I WANT IT THAT
WAY.

2. Even when selecting save current settings as default the settings are NOT
SAVED. Specifically:
- Window state (maximized/restored) is not saved (it always jumps back to
restored).
- Zoom level is not saved (it always jumps back to fit page width)
- Toolvar visibility not saved
- And so on...

[Bug 690287] [NEW] Brasero cover cannot be saved

2010-12-14 Thread tsg1zzn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

When designing a cover in Brasero, it cannot be saved. Since there was
no option to save I assumed that the cover was persistent, but when I
hit close to rearrange some of the audio tracks, my cover was gone!

Furthermore, there is only ONE sensible time one designs a cover, and
that is when you wait while the CD is being burned. The cover editor is
inaccessible at this time! Now you have to design and print the cover
first, then start the CD and finally sit around twirling thumbs while
the CD is burning. There's just no sense to that.

[Bug 124315] Re: Remember+restore window position of applications if WM_WINDOW_ROLE set

2010-12-10 Thread tsg1zzn
That's not a reason to make this bug invalid then, is it?
Not really (and it wasn't me who did that). It's a good solution that we force
every application to set WM_WINDOW_ROLE properly and handle the saving and
restoring of position in the window manager.

Btw. there needs to be a maximum number of window types remembered (like
500) or the database would grow forever due to applications that set
WM_WINDOW_ROLE to include random numbers (I'm looking at you, gnome-
terminal) and similar unexpected things.

[Bug 124315] Re: remember window position of applications

2010-12-09 Thread tsg1zzn
Denny de la Haye, you seriously need to understand the technical details better
before you can know whether it can be done or not.
The code in coment #14 requires that the application set WM_WINDOW_ROLE
properly. If all applications did that, implementing this feature would be
trivial.

The problem is that many (most) applications don't do this. In fact when
quick testing a few applications I could not find ANY that did this.
Which brings us back to what I said: This REQUIRES some application
level support.

This doesn't mean this bug is invalid as such, because the window
manager could provide one part of it. But it will not work without some
application support.

[Bug 629613] Re: Noise while seeking

2010-12-08 Thread tsg1zzn
I have this problem also. It seems there are two separate problems:

1. There is a ckrtsch noise when seeking. This problem is in gstreamer.

2. Totem seeks immediately while you drag the slider instead of playing
normally until you drop the slider, and then seek once. This problem is
in Totem. Of course, the consequences of this misbehavior are magnified
due to problem 1.

[Bug 124315] Re: remember window position of applications

2010-12-06 Thread tsg1zzn
This is not the job of the window because it can't possible done
correctly in the window manager. It's that simple. I'd love to have this
working correctly in the window manager, but it's logically impossible
without application support. Because the window manager doesn't have any
way to know that a particular window is the same as another.

Devils Pie doesn't work correctly. It uses the names of the windows and
the name of the program. Both of these will inevitably fail, as the
window title may change according to the document open, the current
folder, the current language, and many other factors. Devils Pie has a
sophisticated rule system to get around this, however these rules have
to be created by a human who knows what he wants. They can't be
generated programatically and still do the right thing every time.

It is my opinion that the 100% proper way to handle this would be that
the applications could specify a unique id for every window or window
class. Then the window manager could remember the positions correctly.

Maybe X atoms could be used for communicating this ID to the window
manager. If the window manager doesn't support this convention, no harm,
if an application doesn't support this convention, no harm. But the
unfortunate point is, that it still requires application support.

Because currently, applications don't specify anything that would allow
the window manager to properly know that some windows are the same
despite a different window title (and that some windows are not the
same despite similar window title). And since it can't possible be
done correctly in the window manager we have to do it in the
applications.

[Bug 124315] Re: remember window position of applications

2010-12-03 Thread tsg1zzn
This is not the job of the window manager, it must be fixed in the
applications themselves.

It is also my opinion that saving of windows position and state
(maximized/restored) should be detailed in the gnome HIG. This way
developers will be more obliged to fix it. Because currently reporting
this to devs it will get a low priority, even wishlist. Which in my
opinion is ridiculous, as this is a very important and basic feature.

How would you like it if your computer was randomly hidden somewhere in
your apartment every day when you woke up? You'd be furious after a week
or two. This needs to get into the HIG!

[Bug 672572] [NEW] png in trash opens in firefox

[Bug 672572] Re: png in trash opens in firefox

2010-11-08 Thread tsg1zzn
Would you do me a favor and please read what I wrote before replying?

Please check that default program that opens .png files is Image Viewer
command line being eog and not firefox.
I don't want to open the image in eye of gnome! I want to open it in gpicview.
Yes, Image Viewer (command line gpicview) is set as the default action,
that's what I write in the FIRST SENTENCE of the bug report.

About selecting nautilus, I shouldn't be asked this in the first place.

Opening png files works fine everywhere but in the trash bin. The exact
same file in my home folder opens in gpicview, I move it to trash, and
nautilus tries to open it in firefox instead.

[Bug 666683] [NEW] Fit window to movie disabled for non-obvious reason

2010-10-26 Thread tsg1zzn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

When the Totem window is maximized the menu items Resize 1:2, Resize
1:1 and Resize 2:1 are grey out. It's not obvious to the average user

[Bug 666746] [NEW] Screen locked after hibernate

2010-10-26 Thread tsg1zzn
Public bug reported:

When I boot up normally I get logged in without any password. But, if I
resume from hibernation, the screen is locked and I need to enter the
password.

I hope you understand that this is annoying, and that it is not much of a
security feature since no password is asked if I start normally.

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

The settings for desktop background colour (this includes the setting
solid/vgradient/hgradient and the actual colour values) keep resetting
themselves.

How to reproduce:
1. Set a vertical gradient from yellow to red
2. Select any background that has a different aspect ratio than the screen
3. Verify that the setting is now solid _purple_ (!)
4. Set the style to zoom and verify that your desktop image is now has

[Bug 665197] [NEW] Resize when a video is opened doesn't work

2010-10-22 Thread tsg1zzn
Public bug reported:

Re: [Bug 237436] Re: Totem: turning off visualization, turns it on

2010-05-06 Thread tsg1zzn
Fix confirmed.

(Although enabling visualizations when the file is near the end makes Totem
hang and not respond...)

[Bug 237436] Re: Totem: turning off visualization, turns it on

2009-10-12 Thread tsg1zzn
People keep closing this bug because it is invalid or there is not
enough information. This is simply not true, and I consider it rude. All
the information that needed to investigate the bug is there. If a
different version of totem has the same problem in some other version of
Ubuntu, it's your problem not mine. I reported against 8.04 with precise
instructions on how to reproduce the bug. I don't want to pestered on
how it is in a dozen other versions.

Either use the LiveCD or a fresh install of Ubuntu. If you don't do that
and can't reproduce it, it's your own fault.

To reproduce this open a audio file with totem, and while it's playing
go in the settings and uncheck show visualization. Then notice that the
visualization still shows.

This is present in all versions of Ubuntu, Ubuntu 9.4 as well (vmware
driver). I don't know what more information I can supply apart from a
screencast.

[Bug 237436] Re: Totem: turning off visualization, turns it on

2008-10-04 Thread tsg1zzn
This is still a problem with Intrepid. Basically, at first it seems
impossible to turn off visualizations, no matter what I do to the
checkbox, the visualization is going and going. But when the song plays
to the end, then the situation is reversed, and I can't turn
visualization on and just get a black window.

[Bug 237436] Re: Totem: turning off visualization, turns it on

2008-06-11 Thread tsg1zzn
I took another look at it.
Whether I get the totem logo, a black window (this happens most often) or a
visualization (rare) seems to be random and depends very little on the actual
state of the checkbox. Changing the checkbox results in an update of the state
after several seconds, or when the song repeats. It should of course change
immediately.

I have now also reproduced this with a new user (still using the
LiveCD).

I disabled PulseAudio in favour of ALSA.

Re: [Bug 237436] Re: Totem: turning off visualization, turns it on

2008-06-05 Thread tsg1zzn
But I just said I'm using the LiveCD. How would creating a new user
help? I can only assume that you tested it on your installed system.
Try testing it with the LiveCD.

2008/6/4 Pedro Villavicencio [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
Thanks for your report, that's not reproducible here, unchecking the
option works fine i mean i only get the totem logo on the player, may
you try the same with another new user created on your system? thanks.

[Bug 237436] [NEW] Totem: turning off visualization, turns it on

2008-06-04 Thread tsg1zzn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Environment: Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron LiveCD

I wanted to play ubuntu Sax.ogg, so I double clicked on it. It opened in
Totem.

Bug 1: The screen flickered black once.

I thought I could prevent the flickering by turning off the
visualizations.

Bug 2: There was actually no visualtization even though Show visual
effects when an audio file is played was checked. This was probably
because no visualization effect was selected.

But I didn't want any visualization, so I UNckecked the box, and clicked
Close. I repeat: I unchecked the box.

Bug 3: Unchecking the box turned visualtizations ON.

By checking the box, then unchecking it yet again I was able to turn
visualizations off for now.
