[Bug 124315] Re: Remember+restore window position of applications if WM_WINDOW_ROLE set
That's not a reason to make this bug invalid then, is it? Not really (and it wasn't me who did that). It's a good solution that we force every application to set WM_WINDOW_ROLE properly and handle the saving and restoring of position in the window manager. Btw. there needs to be a maximum number of window types remembered (like 500) or the database would grow forever due to applications that set WM_WINDOW_ROLE to include random numbers (I'm looking at you, gnome- terminal) and similar unexpected things. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to metacity in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/124315 Title: Remember+restore window position of applications if WM_WINDOW_ROLE set -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 124315] Re: remember window position of applications
Denny de la Haye, you seriously need to understand the technical details better before you can know whether it can be done or not. The code in coment #14 requires that the application set WM_WINDOW_ROLE properly. If all applications did that, implementing this feature would be trivial. The problem is that many (most) applications don't do this. In fact when quick testing a few applications I could not find ANY that did this. Which brings us back to what I said: This REQUIRES some application level support. This doesn't mean this bug is invalid as such, because the window manager could provide one part of it. [Bug 124315] Re: remember window position of applications
This is not the job of the window because it can't possible done correctly in the window manager. It's that simple. I'd love to have this working correctly in the window manager, but it's logically impossible without application support. Because the window manager doesn't have any way to know that a particular window is the same as another. Devils Pie doesn't work correctly. It uses the names of the windows and the name of the program. Both of these will inevitably fail, as the window title may change according to the document open, the current folder, the current language, and many other factors. Devils Pie has a sophisticated rule system to get around this, however these rules have to be created by a human who knows what he wants. They can't be generated programatically and still do the right thing every time. It is my opinion that the 100% proper way to handle this would be that the applications could specify a unique id for every window or window class. Then the window manager could remember the positions correctly. Maybe X atoms could be used for communicating this ID to the window manager. If the window manager doesn't support this convention, no harm, if an application doesn't support this convention, no harm. But the unfortunate point is, that it still requires application support. Because currently, applications don't specify anything that would allow the window manager to properly know that some windows are the same despite a different window title (and that some windows are not the same despite similar window title). And since it can't possible be done correctly in the window manager we have to do it in the applications. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to metacity in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/124315 Title: remember window position of applications -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 124315] Re: remember window position of applications
This is not the job of the window manager, it must be fixed in the applications themselves. It is also my opinion that saving of windows position and state (maximized/restored) should be detailed in the gnome HIG. This way developers will be more obliged to fix it. Because currently reporting this to devs it will get a low priority, even wishlist. Which in my opinion is ridiculous, as this is a very important and basic feature. How would you like it if your computer was randomly hidden somewhere in your apartment every day when you woke up? You'd be furious after a week or two. This needs to get into the HIG!

[Bug 672572] Re: png in trash opens in firefox
Would you do me a favor and please read what I wrote before replying? Please check that default program that opens .png files is Image Viewer command line being eog and not firefox. I don't want to open the image in eye of gnome! I want to open it in gpicview. Yes, Image Viewer (command line gpicview) is set as the default action, that's what I write in the FIRST SENTENCE of the bug report. About selecting nautilus, I shouldn't be asked this in the first place. Opening png files works fine everywhere but in the trash bin. The exact same file in my home folder opens in gpicview, I move it to trash, and nautilus tries to open it in firefox instead. -- png in trash opens in firefox https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/672572 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 237436] Re: Totem: turning off visualization, turns it on
People keep closing this bug because it is invalid or there is not enough information. This is simply not true, and I consider it rude. All the information that needed to investigate the bug is there. If a different version of totem has the same problem in some other version of Ubuntu, it's your problem not mine. I reported against 8.04 with precise instructions on how to reproduce the bug. I don't want to pestered on how it is in a dozen other versions. Either use the LiveCD or a fresh install of Ubuntu. If you don't do that and can't reproduce it, it's your own fault. To reproduce this open a audio file with totem, and while it's playing go in the settings and uncheck show visualization. Then notice that the visualization still shows. This is present in all versions of Ubuntu, Ubuntu 9.4 as well (vmware driver). I don't know what more information I can supply apart from a screencast. ** Changed in: totem (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid = New -- Totem: turning off visualization, turns it on https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/237436 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 237436] Re: Totem: turning off visualization, turns it on
This is still a problem with Intrepid. Basically, at first it seems impossible to turn off visualizations, no matter what I do to the checkbox, the visualization is going and going. But when the song plays to the end, then the situation is reversed, and I can't turn visualization on and just get a black window. ** Changed in: totem (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid = New -- Totem: turning off visualization, turns it on https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/237436 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 237436] Re: Totem: turning off visualization, turns it on
I took another look at it. Whether I get the totem logo, a black window (this happens most often) or a visualization (rare) seems to be random and depends very little on the actual state of the checkbox. Changing the checkbox results in an update of the state after several seconds, or when the song repeats. It should of course change immediately. I have now also reproduced this with a new user (still using the LiveCD). I disabled PulseAudio in favour of ALSA. ** Changed in: totem (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = New -- Totem: turning off visualization, turns it on https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/237436 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
