[Bug 1810404] Re: printing options set in control center don't work

2019-01-10 Thread Sebastien Bacher
There is a bug report about 'printer can't be removed' upstream on
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-control-center/issues/187 , I'm
going to comment with some of the debug details you added maybe it can
help them to debug the issue

[Bug 1810404] Re: printing options set in control center don't work

2019-01-10 Thread Jonathan Kamens
Please see attached animated GIF. Open gnome-control-center, it says
printer is there, try to delete it, it says it was deleted but error in
terminal says it wasn't because it doesn't actually exist, close gnome-
control-center, re-open it, printer is back, close it again.

/var/log/cups/access_log says:

localhost - - [10/Jan/2019:09:02:42 -0500] "POST / HTTP/1.1" 200 343
Create-Printer-Subscriptions successful-ok

None of the other logs in /var/log/cups are modified.

The printer in question IS NOT LISTED IN /ETC/CUPS/PRINTERS.CONF. I
honestly have no idea where gnome-control-center is getting it from. I
had a theory that maybe a previous invocation of gnome-control-center
removed it from printers.conf but didn't tell CUPS to reload, so it was
in memory in cupsd but not on disk, but I tried restarting cupsd and the
problem persists. I literally have no idea where gnome-control-center is
getting that printer from.

Please don't ask me for any more information, I'm sick and tired of this
and I've already wasted too much time on it. All the issues I've
reported have been extremely easy for me to reproduce. If you are unable
to reproduce them, I have no idea why and have no time to help you
further. If you haven't even tried, then stop wasting my time.

Can you start gnome-control-center from a command line, add the printer
and see if any warning at all is displayed? Could you also add the logs
from /var/log/cups?

I checked. There is nothing relevant in journalctl.

Could you add your journalctl log anyway? It might have errors from the
new "page is blank" issue...

[Bug 1810404] Re: printing options set in control center don't work

2019-01-10 Thread Jonathan Kamens
When I reopened the settings window, the duplex setting had reverted to
single-sided.

I am currently unable to reproduce this issue, because now when I add
the network printer in question the printing options page is blank, so I
can't capture a journalctl of what happens when I try to change its
duplex option. Why is the printing options page blank? Another bug.

And then there's a third bug... After adding that new network printer I
removed it, and the UI said it was removed, but then when I closed and
reopened the printer settings page in control center, there it was, back
again.

Just in general, the printer settings page in control center has all
sort of wrong behaviors like this. I've observed stuff like this many
times in the past few years, too many to enumerate them all.

My guess is that there's a whole bunch of code in this app that should
be doing error checking but isn't.

You can leave this bug marked "Incomplete" and do nothing, or you can,
y'know, maybe actually have someone try to reproduce it or even maybe
look at the code and try to find the places where it's not doing the
error checking that it could be. Whatevs.

Thank you for your bug report. Does the setting stick if you re-open the
options page? Could you attach your journalctl log around the time of
the issue?
