There wasn't any activity noticeable in top and no updates from the journalctl command. I've attached a video demonstrating it is really just about the dialog displayed. My first thought is that gnome-shell might be blocked waiting to write log messages to disk, and indeed I do see a number of these in your log: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bugs?field.tag=logspam Can you open two Terminal windows and run 'top' in one, and 'journalctl -f /usr/bin/gnome-shell' in the other?
