[Bug 214507] Re: evolution doesn't close properly
The cause seems to be that is not possible to cancel a task (downloading emails...), even clicking on cancel... So when evolution tries to close, it waits until all the tasks are complete... which can be long if : - there is a bug in the program which make the task uncompletable - there is a connexion problem It would be find to add a way to "kill" the thread who connects (without waiting for socket timeout). ** Changed in: evolution (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid => New -- evolution doesn't close properly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/214507 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 214507] Re: evolution doesn't close properly
Ah well... @Adriaan: we actually want to kill evo, so that a backtrace would be generated. Unfortunately, apport does not kick in... 'evolution --force- shutdown' is almost the same as a 'kill' on evo and its components, this is why you get the warning when you restart. But it is still not a nice way of closing evo. @rom: OK. I really do not know why apport did not kick in. So we are now left with a much more intrusive approach: you will have to run Evo under GDB, perhaps some times, until we get enough data to pinpoint the issue. You will also have to install a series of debug symbols packages. Are you willing to do that? -- evolution doesn't close properly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/214507 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 214507] Re: evolution doesn't close properly
Sorry, I was unavailable for a while... It seems you need to enable apport: open a terminal, and 'sudo gedit /etc/default/apport'; change 'enabled' from zero to 1, and save. Then try again, with a SIGSEGV (kill -SEGV `pidof evolution` should do the trick). [Bug 214507] Re: evolution doesn't close properly
Hello ringostar, Unfortunately the backtrace is missing most of the symbols -- and, as such, it is unusable. Perhaps a better option would be to allow apport (the automagic bug filler) to deal with it. You should be able to force apport to kick in by sending a (for example) SIGSEGV to evolution: $ kill -11 `pidof evolution` This will send a SIGSEGV to evolution, which should kick apport. Apport will then propose to open a new bug on Lauchpad. Accept, and refer to this one (also, please state the SIGSEGV was just a way to get apport to fill in the bug). We then should have in launchpad a bug with nice backtraces. *Before* killing evolution, please also run strace on it: $ sudo strace -p `pidof evolution` -o evo-trace.log Let it run for a bit, then kill it & upload the resulting log file here.
