[Bug 242476] Re: Should be able to make link to files in directory without write permissions or in fat32 directory in home directory
@Sebastian Bacher: could you point to those other bugs please. Thanks. I'm reopening this because the greyed-out option makes it appear as if creating a symlink was not possible. My proposal for an alternate implementation would be to change it into "Make Link ..." with an ellipsis, and open a Save As ... dialog for the user to indicate where to place the symlink. (I cannot like or condone the WIndows way of doing this, which is to place it on the desktop when it cannot be created where you wanted it. In fact you probably pretty much never actually want a link in the directory where the target is, anyway.) -- Should be able to make link to files in directory without write permissions or in fat32 directory in home directory https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/242476 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

you can do a drag and drop using middle click to do that, closing this bug since there is already some others bugs about that not being easy enough ** Changed in: nautilus (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Invalid -- Should be able to make link to files in directory without write permissions or in fat32 directory in home directory https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/242476 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 242476] Re: Should be able to make link to files in directory without write permissions or in fat32 directory in home directory
What I mean is that in a terminal you could do something like: ln -s /var/www ~/Link_to_www What nautilus does is similar to: cd /var ln -s www Link_to_www You have write permissions to your own home directory so could make a link from there to somewhere else where you don't have write permissions or it is on a fat32 file system. Currently you can't do this with Nautilus because it has to make the link in the same directory where you are linking to. What I'm suggesting is that if you go to /var and select "Make Link" nautilus brings up the file chooser dialog so you can choose a directory to place the link in. -- Should be able to make link to files in directory without write permissions or in fat32 directory in home directory https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/242476 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

thanks for you report, may you elaborate a bit more your bug is somewhat confusing? how you are going to create a link if you don't have permissions to do so? ** Changed in: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Wishlist Assignee: (unassigned) => Ubuntu Desktop Bugs (desktop-bugs) Status: New => Incomplete -- Should be able to make link to files in directory without write permissions or in fat32 directory in home directory https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/242476 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
