Hmm, the layouts I added (I am using German and Bulgarian) do not appear in xorg.conf at all! Where could they reside? EDIT: If I add them manually it works!! I can't believe it! My other hotkeys work as well. I have the same problem here. This happens everytime if I use the autologin feature and does not happen if I log in manually. With the autologin the US (default) layout is assumed. I have exactly the same problem with a bulgarian layout. I've also had a weird problem with the keyboard (not exactly the same). I had us and es layouts activated (es by default). In hardy, everytime I rebooted my machine, the characters were weird: I thought it was something like greek, maybe it was just the third level modifier. The temporal solution was to get into SystemPreferencesKeyboard and change my keyboard from 'generic' to something else and then back to 'generic'. That solved it until the next reboot. Today I tried removing the .gconf/desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard folder, and now I just have the es layout, but no more weird problems when I reboot. I set up the Gnome keyboard applet with two layouts - United Kingdom
(GBr) and Malta (Mlt), with GBr as default.
Initially this works fine, but after I reboot, if I switch to the
Maltese keyboard layout via the applet, the keyboard generates all weird
characters.
I discovered that the characters being generated are as if the third
- level modifier is on - but I have no third level modifier key defined
- in the options. If I remove the Maltese layout and re-add it, it works
- ok again until the next reboot. Also, if I use the command setxkbmap
- mt it also works correctly... but then the keyboard applet freaks out
- and refuses to switch layouts after that.
