[Bug 316093] Re: gvfsd allocates huge amounts of memory while playing audio files

2009-01-12 Thread lbhudda
Thank you for picking up my bug report.
I understand your request, and have installed valgrind on my system.
However, since the program I suspect of leaking memory is gvfsd (I have
acutally managed to reclaim the memory by killing it; it restarts
automatically, and my swap is released. I will put this in my bug report
asap.), and it is started automatically by Ubuntu when it starts the graphical
environment, and it seems to be under the control of init, I'm at a loss as how
to make valgrind control it. Maybe you could be so good as to send me a link
for me to find out?

I have used System Monitor to kill the gvfsd process and that has
released the consumed swap, confirming my suspicions that gvfsd was
responsible for consuming the memory. Since gvfsd automatically gets
restarted, that kind of works for me, but I hope you agree it's not a
very good solution.

2009-01-12 Thread lbhudda
Searching for a way to replace the gvfsd I found the following bug (225615),
which gave me a bit of a deja-vu:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/225615. Am I mistaken or is gvfs very leaky?

Btw. I ___will___ try to produce a valgrind logfile, but I'm kind of
baffled by the behaviour of this relatively mature bit of code?

[Bug 316093] Re: gvfsd allocates huge amounts of memory while playing audio files

2009-01-22 Thread lbhudda
After trying for nearly two weeks, I have to face up to the fact that I'm not
able to reproduce the bug anymore.
I'm not sure if this is due to patches and / or product updates, but I have
been running my music program more or less constantly and I haven't had virtual
memory rising on me as I had before.

I would like to close with the fact that I found using valgrind
difficult in my situation (having to monitor gvfsd), as it is hooked up
to the system / X11 initialisation scripts and didn't respond well to
the wrapper script solution that was offered to me both by Sebastien and
by an article on this site.

I think you can get rid of this bug listing.

Thank you for all the help.

Rob Wiers

memory rising on me as I had before.

2009-01-12 Thread lbhudda
I have used System Monitor to kill the gvfsd process and that has
released the consumed swap, confirming my suspicions that gvfsd was
responsible for consuming the memory. Since gvfsd automatically gets
restarted, that kind of works for me, but I hope you agree it's not a
very good solution.

Re: [Bug 316093] Re: gvfsd allocates huge amounts of memory while playing audio files

2009-01-12 Thread lbhudda
I'm having problems getting the replaced gvfsd to start. I've created a
wrapper script, similar to the one described in the pages of the other
bug. When I try to start it, it works, but doesn't come back in the
System Monitor (process is not listed there, even though it exists; I
can find it with ps and top). After a reboot, the gvfsd doesn't start
automatically, and therefore the x-windows / gnome environment doesn't
start as wanted (no Desktop) there is a warning, but I forgot what it
is. Currently, I have put everything back (x-windows / gnome is working
fine), to make sure I am trying to monitor the right program. I think
this has to do with the fact that it's gvfsd, not gvfsd-, but
I'm not sure yet on how to resolve it. As I mentioned earlier, if I
shoot gvfsd, init (or something) restarts it automatically. However,
with the wrapper script, this doesn't happen (init isn't happy with the
new environment, and thinks gvfsd isn't started, or it actually doesn't
start).

Anyway, for now, the result is the same; I either don't get a working
gvfsd or I don't get a working x-windows / gnome environment.

Some suggestions would be appreciated.

Ok Sebastien,

I suggested closing it some time ago, as I couldn't reproduce the
problem.

Many thanks to all who invested their time in this issue!

2009-01-12 Thread lbhudda
Hello Sebastien,

Thank you for picking up my bug report.
I understand your request, and have installed valgrind on my system.
However, since the program I suspect of leaking memory is gvfsd (I have
acutally managed to reclaim the memory by killing it; it restarts
automatically, and my swap is released. I will put this in my bug report
asap.), and it is started automatically by Ubuntu when it starts the
graphical environment, and it seems to be under the control of init, I'm
at a loss as how to make valgrind control it. Maybe you could be so good
as to send me a link for me to find out?

Kind regards,
Rob Wiers
