This is still an issue in Karmic, as of today. It's definitely low priority, as I haven't researched it for over a year, but it is annoying. Unfortunately, it's not something that I can reproduce reliably. That's why it's so low priority ... because it only happens between 50 and 75 percent of the time. Further note: have only noticed it when I push the power button on my laptop. That is, the window usually pops up in response to me pushing the power button. Recently (I think about the same time I began noticing bug 364838) the "Exit" options window on this system) began opening BEHIND the active window, and other windows on the desktop no longer dim out as they had previously. I can click it on the task panel and bring the Exit window to the front, but this is new, different and seems clearly wrong. Exception: Exit window opens in front of an active Wine application window, but behind any other Linux window I tried (Nautilus, Firefox, Thunderbird and Mousepad.) It sure looks like something changed for the worse on this system recently. (8.04 AMD64, updates current as of 2009/04/20 20:00 GMT. Running plain Gnome GUI / desktop. Without compiz it doesn't happen. The window spawns in the foreground, though it sometimes doesn't get the focus. Blowing aways /apps/metacity , /apps/compiz , /apps/compizconfig at the same time seems to have solved it. (compiz must be reading some metacity settings?) Just kicked the /apps/comiz and /apps/compizconfig tree on a text console (while not logged in in X). This also happens for the "Log Out of the session" window btw. If you can't easily spot the problematic setting it's probably not worth investigation further and i will reset compiz to default... Thank you for your bug report. That doesn't sound like a panel bug - the window that appears is part of gnome-session. I can't recreate this either, so it might be something specific to your window manager settings.
