[Bug 32286] Gnome panel is gone - GConf problem?
Public bug report changed: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/32286 Task: ubuntu gnome-panel Status: Needs Info = Confirmed Comment: Even I am getting this problem today. I am on the latest Dapper. The panel works just fine for other users. The top panel with the menubar and applets seem to be hung as I don't see any of the applets and clicking on the menubar doesn't yield any results. $ ps ax | grep panel shows this -- 6094 ?Ssl0:01 gnome-panel --sm-client-id 11c0a8016400011426569630056860009 --screen 0 6098 ?S 0:02 /usr/lib/gnome-panel/wnck-applet --oaf-activate-iid=OAFIID:GNOME_Wncklet_Factory --oaf-ior-fd=43 6107 ?S 0:00 /usr/lib/gnome-panel/notification-area-applet --oaf-activate-iid=OAFIID:GNOME_NotificationAreaApplet_Factory --oaf-ior-fd=50 Looks like they are hung badly. I am also attaching my ~/.gconfd -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Public bug report changed: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/32286 Comment: What I mean is: 1. Log in in GDM with a user for the first time 2. Create 2 panels on top of screen 3. Log out so that GDM appears again 4. Now log in your Gnome session again 5. I doubt it's due to gconf. Do you have a custom ~/.gnome2/session? [Bug 32286] Gnome panel is gone - GConf problem?
Public bug report changed: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/32286 Comment: There where no users logged in - only on VT when I did the ps. Strange thing now is: If I start Gnome now as my test user everything starts without any problems. The 2 panels are now in the correct order on the top of the screen. I do not remember exactly if I killed the panel on VT when I did ps ax... But I don't think that this is the reason and I wonder why it works now!? But that mustn't happen that there is a panel error the first time after putting 2 panels on the top and logging out and in again. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 32286] Gnome panel is gone - GConf problem?
Public bug report changed: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/32286 Comment: I experience the same error. The problem here is that gnome-panel fails to stop when the user logs out. Perhaps a line was missed that kills it, or something, but that fact is that it keeps running even after the majority of the GNOME processes have stopped. I tried killing gnome-panel, and when it started again, most of the applets were unresponsive, and a couple of them, namely the ACPI battery monitoring applet (this is on a laptop) crashed or didn't start. I now have to reboot to check session changes or anything like that. This could be considered a serious problem. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 32286] Gnome panel is gone - GConf problem?
Public bug reported: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/32286 Affects: gconf2 (Ubuntu) Severity: Normal Priority: (none set) Status: Unconfirmed Description: Dapper Flight4: I have set up 2 panels one upon the other on top of the screen. One has my desktop and window switcher and the other has application menu, icons etc. After logging out and logging in again the panels are gone and there pops up an error message with sth. like: There is already running one panel... I can press only the OK button and will be left with a blank desktop without any panels. My guess is that it is GConf related cause there all settings are stored!? And this is not the first time that I have troubles with Gnome loading my settings. Seems GConf is VERY vulnerable to getting screwed up... I'd like to attach my zipped .gconf2 directory but I can't find an option here in Malone to attach sth. to a bug report... -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
