Doris, if you could, we would like to gather some more data. Can you please run the following command in the terminal twice (once before inserting a CD, and once after inserting a CD): gvfs-mount -li After running the command before and after inserting a CD, do the Select All, then Copy just like you did for the previous command. Then open Gedit and Paste the information and save the text file. You can then upload that file to this bug report. Note that it might be that nothing prints from those commands. Hi, I am trying to do this, but the more I read it the more sure I am that I have no idea what I am supposed to do. I am functionally semi- illiterate when it comes to most of the jargon. I only know the terms I've specifically been taught, and with no one really to ask anything of, that's a pretty low vocabulary. I'm not sure what you mean by terminal, exactly, or where to type it in ~ do you mean to type rhythmbox -d somewhere? Could you be really specific about where you mean for me to type it? The terminal is a program found in Accessories and lets you type in commands (much like computers back in the 80's and early 90's). This time, instead of the apport-collect ... command, you will type rhythmbox -d and then press enter. Rhythmbox will then start up. Do not close the terminal until after you finish with Rhythmbox. Hi, Yes, I think I can do that. But to clarify, when a CD is inserted, the Unknown which used to appear, before the upgrade ran, doesn't appear, and that seems to be the problem, in that when I clicked on it, before, the tracks showed up and then played just fine. Now nothing shows up and there's nothing to click on and so it's not usable. What would make it change from functional to dysfunctional is what baffles me. I'll take the screenshot, of Rhythmbox, when there's a CD inserted, and attach it to this email. Thank you for your efforts to solve this mystery. Ok, I understand now. When you insert an Audio CD with rhythmbox open, it should show a Devices section on the left with the CD, as show in my screenshot. I assume it is not doing this? Yes, thank you, I compared the two screenshots, and yes, absolutely, the item Devices has never appeared on the left-hand menu, when the CD is inserted; nothing at all happens. It baffles me, because the system or whatever does it, maybe the right word is driver (?) I don't really speak the language much yet, though I'm trying to learn, anyway the CD being inserted, now that I've installed Banshee, does show up as an item in the Banshee application, and everything now works, with Banshee, just as it used to work in Rhythmbox, before the upgrade. But it still doesn't phase Rhythmbox one iota. ;-) Why on earth that would happen is a mystery to me, which isn't saying much! I hope this is helpful, since if this is something others may have a problem with, it's worth figuring it out. No problem at all. That's provided us with enough information to know the rhythmbox simply isn't polling the drive (checking it), or doesn't see it for perhaps another reason. I was almost certain that it wasn't going to be that easy... Under System-Preferences, you can go to Preferred Applications and select Banshee for your Multiimedia choice. This may let it automatically detect that you have inserted a CD. Anyway, this does help us determine where the fault lies. What will happen next in this bug report is that you will see a series of conversations by various programmers. You can largely ignore this conversation, which will be a good thing because it will likely be filled with jargon.
