[Bug 540826] Re: Rename "Suspend" to "Sleep"

** Description changed: In the Power Menu, "Suspend" should be renamed to "Sleep" because sleep falls on a continuum with hibernation/"Hibernate", and "sleep" is a more intuitive term for new users (you can verify this by asking ten people who have not used Ubuntu what it means to "suspend" a computer, then ask another ten people who have not used Ubuntu what it means to "sleep" a computer). - Specifically in Power Management Preferences, both words "sleep" and "suspend" are used and mean the same thing. [Bug 540826] Re: Rename "Suspend" to "Sleep"
I remember working through this 4 years ago when I was focused more on the power management. The aim at the time the aim was just to get some better consistency; http://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-power-manager/tree/docs/sleep- names.html?id=313d76583201b308f173d0803e120eba68e0c9c0 that's the last commit that had the original in-source documentation about what to do, and which was removed in the next commit. At the time the aim was settling on Suspend/Resume and Hibernate/Resume. Hibernate is generally fine because in English people have often heard about fluffy polar bears in winter. Suspend was better-than-the-other- options. Perhaps the thing to do here would be to get some hard user testing, and if we have a verifiable outcome then to go about patching everything system-wide at an Upstream level? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/540826 Title: Rename "Suspend" to "Sleep" -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 540826] Re: Rename "Suspend" to "Sleep"
"Suspend" is technically more correct than "Sleep" and I'd prefer that. But the most important thing is that whatever name it is called, it is called with the same name everywhere. [Bug 540826] Re: Rename "Suspend" to "Sleep"
Dear Team, What's wrong with suspend ? I fail to understand the point here. >From google search: [Suspend mode powers down devices that are not needed in order to safe electricity, e.g. it may switch the monitor, sound card or modem off and turn them back on when you return from suspend mode.] To me, it word 'suspend' sounds more consistent with the intended function and with other linux distributions including the upstream ones mentioned above. Except as in comment #4 -- I agree; "sleep" is a preferable word, and is also the Apple usage for its notebooks. and if that is the case, to me that's a No-Go. [Bug 540826] Re: Rename "Suspend" to "Sleep"
The issue is what Ted described, launchpad doesn't handle documentation translations right now and ubuntu has no easy way to do changes in the documentation translation out of doing source upload for each translation changes, so it would be much easier to convince upstream of the interest of the change if we believe the new wording would be a win, we decided previous cycle it was not enough of a win to break documentation translations in all non english locales though -- Rename "Suspend" to "Sleep" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/540826 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-session in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

The translation issue comes from the problem that Ubuntu translators can't translate the documentation from upstreams. I've been working with the LP team to get a fix for this scheduled for development. While upstreaming these changes is always good, we need to ensure that we can make and properly translate them as well. -- Rename "Suspend" to "Sleep" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/540826 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-session in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
