[Bug 545231] [NEW] Evolution unresponsive on low bandwidth especially when I have attachments to download

2010-03-23 Thread Willy Ted Manga
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I use to work with less than 192 Kbs/s as download rate . When I retrieve a
mail with an attachment, my application become unresponsive while downloading
items.
I have two workaround:
1) I do not use the evolution window while the download is pending
2) I kill the Evolution's process, restart the app and skip as soon as possible
the mail which raise this status :)

Anyone has a better workaround ?

I can now scroll with the mouse and have the menu stay where it's put
(originally, I had the same symptoms that the original reporter
described regarding mouse movement), but the keyboard navigation bug is
still present.

[Bug 519935] Re: Confusing eject disc error message when burning dvd

Manually ejecting the disc finished the process correctly, so it's just
ejecting the tray automatically that's bugged. Should be an easy fix for
those who know how.

[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment

2010-03-23 Thread scholli
Well... never user a touchpad? Or a 5 years old mouse? Ask your elderly
about their gesture precision too...

Gesture precision has nothing to do with the left or right side

But it does! Cann't you see that?

I have to admit that this is probably a negative point from this change. The
rest of the contra-arguments don't have really sense...
But in other hand there are good points of this change. Mostly shorter
mouseways, all near in one range and a own face, for example.

Yann I am always honest with what I say. I always say what I feel and
see. Here I see a good change and it feels good. ,)

[Bug 540813] Re: wrong /usr/share/applications/desktop.$locale.cache files

2010-03-23 Thread Martin Pitt
 - the documentation for various packages doesn't tell about
 update-gnome-menus-cache.
 - update-gnome-menus-cache doesn't even have a man page

It's an internal implementation detail. I agree it shouldn't be in
/usr/bin, so we can use this bug to track moving it to /usr/share/.

 - For example, trying to add a new screensaver-type by hand does not
work when you put a .desktop file in /usr/share/applications
/screensavers/. In fact, *deleting* a .desktop file there does not
remove the screensaver from the screensaver settings menu!

This is not supported. Please use /usr/local/applications or
~/.local/applications for custom .desktop files. /usr is for distro
packages, /usr/local and /home for user customizations.

 - a cache file should not reside in /usr/share/applications/

Indeed it might be nicer in /var/cache; it makes the lookups less
efficient, but it should be bearable. This could become a separate
wishlist bug.

 - *if* you cache files, you should make sure the cached file will be
rebuilt.

That's already done via dpkg triggers.

** Summary changed:

- wrong /usr/share/applications/desktop.$locale.cache files
+ Do not put update-gnome-menus-cache into $PATH

not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to

2010-03-23 Thread chris109
Pako wrote 5 hours ago: #341
I'm sure it took you at least 15 minutes to write this comment, to change the
button layout will take you less than 15 seconds.

- And you have to change it every time it every time you set up a
computer.

- And you have to explain how to change it to every user who's is
switching from Windows to Ubuntu.

- And you will spend a lot more time to answer to new Ubuntu users,
asking in a forum how to change it.

There is no reason for this new default button arrangement. Doing things
different just to be different is stupid. (Sorry, for that.) Most people
look for the buttons on the top right corner of a window and it's always
a sign of good user interface design to match peoples expectations as
often as possible.

Personally I support every change, which has a reasonable background.
This change doesn't.

after having scrolled up manually, the conversation window in a chat fails

 conversations messages with the scrolling..
instead, the scrollbar keeps the conversation window focus on the messages

[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment

2010-03-23 Thread running_rabbit07
- And you have to explain how to change it to every user who's is
switching from Windows to Ubuntu.

That is assuming that people coming from Windows are not open minded to
change, which I find to be hard to believe, being the person has
actually opened up the to the opportunity for such a major change. When
I came to Linux, I was prepared and wanting something totally different
from Windows. I saw people posting bashing everything about Windows on
the forum. Now it is most of those same people who are now complaining
they want Ubuntu to look like Windows.

I gladly help others on the forums and I am actually planning to start
working on getting into the BT, so I can help people the best way
possible. I will gladly respond to the help threads and help people put
the buttons where ever they may want them.

I think Mark is going out on a limb here to bring a change that will
possibly make Ubuntu stand above many of the other distros that are
trying to get into people's desktops.

[Bug 539515] Re: Attempts to mount floppy despite no media present

2010-03-23 Thread Martin Pitt
I'm trying to understand the symptom here. So your computer does not
have a floppy drive, but you have a floppy icon? Did you click on it to
mount it, or does it try to mount automatically?

Can you please run apport-collect 539515? This will attach some
hardware information which will help me to figure out the problem.

Thanks!

[Bug 460328] Re: Wrong keyboard settings when console-settings has multiple layouts

2010-03-23 Thread Psy[H[]
Confirming: with empty gconf keys g-s-d now correctly takes settings from
console-setup.
When something is changed on user-level, only corresponding gconf key is being
set. Others remain empty and work correctly.

I've tested addition of custom options by adding compose key option, and
noticed that supposed garbage in options key may actually be some kind of
headers. Gconf list entry of compose option goes like that: Compose key
compose:menu. So it seems to be correct behavior, because these options can be
transferred correctly to console-setup by apply systemwide. The only question
is: why those redundant words are needed in gconf list anyway? But without them
things break.
Maybe it is better to leave it as it is. The only downside: it is hard to
manually type in gconf options list with all correct symbols in place. But I
doubt many people will ever need to do it.

One last thing: wouldn't it be better to set
/desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/general/defaultGroup to 0 by
default, instead of -1 ?
